SCPD announces increased alcohol enforcement for Labor Day weekend

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison have announced increased enforcement efforts to keep Suffolk County residents safe during Labor Day weekend.

The department will be utilizing Safe Driving Enforcement and Stop DWI grant funds to increase patrols, both on land and on the water, to target drivers operating a motor vehicle or vessel under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Officers will also be enforcing traffic laws through high-visibility patrols to help keep motorists safe and will target aggressive and distracted drivers.

Patrol officers will also perform directed patrols in areas of high foot-traffic, such as strip malls and shopping centers, to deter criminal activity and enhance public safety.

“We do not want a weekend of fun to turn into a tragic one,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “If you plan to drink during the upcoming holiday weekend, use common sense and plan a way home because if you get behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking, you will be caught and you will be held accountable.”

“The SCPD will be out in full force keeping our roadways and waterways safe during the busy holiday weekend. The department has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to driving under the influence and will be utilizing sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols to hold individuals accountable. It is important for members of the community to play their part in keeping Suffolk’s roadways and waterways a safe place for all. I encourage everyone who is celebrating this weekend to do so responsibly by planning ahead to use public transportation, identifying a designated driver or utilizing a taxi-cab or one of the many ride sharing options that are available to all.” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney K. Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the people who allegedly used stolen credit cards in stores in Commack and East Northport this month.

A Hispanic man told a woman there was a problem with her passenger side tire in the Lidl parking lot, located at 711 East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, on August 18 at approximately 11:15 a.m. Another suspect stole the victim’s wallet while she was distracted looking at her tire. Later that day a Hispanic man and Hispanic woman used the victim’s credit cards at The Home Depot stores in Commack and East Northport.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest. Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Fourth Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the woman who stole allegedly merchandise from an Islandia store this month.

A woman allegedly stole a television and other assorted merchandise from BJ’s Wholesale Club, located at 1000 Nichols Road, on August 18 at approximately 8:45 p.m. The items were valued at approximately $350.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Sixth Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the women who allegedly stole merchandise from an East Setauket store this month.

Two women allegedly stole merchandise from Walmart, located at 3990 Nesconset Highway on August 11. They fled in a blue 2020 or 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Suffolk PD 6th Precinct holds monthly community meeting

Suffolk County Police Department’s 6th Precinct held its monthly community meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the precinct’s headquarters in Selden, addressing a number of pressing public safety concerns.

The meeting was hosted by Deputy Inspector Eric D’Agostino, who discussed the crime statistics of the towns within the 6th Precinct during the month of July.

A total of 597 crimes were reported to the precinct in July, a 2.2% increase from the 584 crimes reported in July of 2021. The crimes included one homicide, three robberies, nine aggravated assaults, 10 grand larceny autos and 14 burglaries.

The community meeting also touched upon the alarming new crime trend of catalytic converter theft from cars, specifically Honda CRVs, Honda Accords and Ford trucks. These incidents have taken place in all Suffolk police precincts and have occurred at residential and commercial locations.

Additionally, single vehicles and large commercial fleets have both been targeted. These crimes currently include multiple persons of interest. [To read more about this crime phenomenon, see TBR News Media story, “Catalytic converter theft on the rise in Suffolk County,” Feb. 24 this year.]

In July, three robberies were reported to the 6th Precinct, two of which occurred in Miller Place, the other in Setauket. There were also two trigger pulls last month, but nobody was shot. This figure represents a drop from the five reported pulled triggers and six shot during July of last year.

The police department is also investigating a series of 15 burglaries at gas stations throughout the county. Most incidents captured a man in a Dodge Caravan pulling up to the establishments, and he was arrested.

D’Agostino also discussed the Multi-agency ATV Task Force. Last month, 11 ATVs were impounded, bringing the year-to-date total up to 39, and 15 ATV summonses were issued, bringing the annual-to-date total up to 56.

There were 30 drug overdoses in July, with only one fatality. Of the overdoses, 22 were by men, and eight by women. This was a slight decrease from last July, when there were 34 drug overdoses, with one fatality.

From June 30 to July 29, there were 10 vehicles stolen, five of which were recovered while the other five remain missing. D’Agostino reminded community members to never leave their key fobs in unlocked cars, along with anything that can be perceived to be valuable.

He suggested keeping cars in garages if possible, or parking them in well-lit areas to deter thieves from trying to steal the catalytic converters. In order to protect homes, he recommended putting out alarm signs, installing floodlights and making sure that all doors are locked.

gas station in Port Jefferson last month.

A man used a stolen credit card at Sunoco, located at 240 Terryville Road, on July 20. The credit card was stolen from a wallet in an unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway in Kings Park earlier that day. The suspect drove a white BMW with damage to the driver’s
side door.

Wanted for Miller Place robbery

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the men who robbed a man in Miller Place.

A Miller Place man arranged via social media to sell a 2022 Rolex Sky-Dweller watch to another individual in a parking lot on Route 25A on July 21 at approximately 11:45 p.m. When the victim arrived, he was approached by three men, one of whom displayed a gun, and was robbed of the watch, his cellphone and wallet.

The men, who were all described as Hispanic, fled in a white SUV, possibly a Mercedes Benz AMG GT with a rear spoiler. One of the men was described as approximately 30 years old, with a light complexion, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall with a thin build, short hair and was clean shaven. A second suspect had a dark complexion, was short with a thin build, groomed beard and braided hair. The third suspect was described as heavyset with a dark complexion, in his early 20s, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and clean shaven.

Northport man seriously injured in motor vehicle crash

Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a motorist in Fort Salonga yesterday.

Kenneth Gallagher was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck westbound on Fort Salonga Road when the vehicle collided head-on with a box truck that was traveling eastbound in front of 84 Fort Salonga Road, at approximately 4:40 p.m.

Gallagher, 24, of Northport, was transported by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition. The driver of the box truck, Dylan Bradshaw, 25, of Hauppauge, was transported to St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown for treatment of minor injuries.

The box truck was processed at the scene by the Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety Unit and the Dodge was impounded for a safety check. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.

PJS/Terryville civic tackles Brookhaven redistricting, Jefferson Plaza and public safety

Members of the Port Jefferson Station/Terryville Civic Association deliberated on a range of issues during their monthly meeting held on Tuesday, July 26 at the Comsewogue Public Library.

Redistricting

Headlining the meeting was Town of Brookhaven Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich (D-Stony Brook), who addressed the ongoing redistricting process for the Brookhaven Town Council, calling the current redistricting scheme a threat to his district.

“The intention of redistricting is to rebalance election districts — council districts, for example — based on population changes,” he said. “But in practice, what happens is that both political parties tend to take advantage of this to redraw districts that they believe will be more favorable to their own party.”

Kornreich, who represents Council District 1, will see significant changes to his district’s boundaries if the current plans are approved. The proposal for Council District 1 is to transfer roughly half of the Port Jefferson Station and Terryville community into Council District 2. In exchange, CD1 would receive roughly half of Mount Sinai.

“It is unclear to me what is going to be gained from this,” Kornreich said.

What will be lost is the continuity of planning and progress that he believes has characterized his tenure in the district. “All it does is split the hamlet. … It splits this hamlet that we have worked so hard to work on together.”

The consequence, Kornreich fears, is that public investment in the PJS/Terryville area will be diluted and redirected to areas with greater voting power. He urged community members to attend upcoming hearings of the Brookhaven Redistricting Committee.

“This is a time for community unity,” the councilmember said. “You understand what’s at stake. So get educated about it and speak up on behalf of your community.”

Ed Garboski, PJSTCA president, spoke of the ways in which the community has come together in the past to protect its interests. He considered the current redistricting controversy a cause for collective concern and action.

“We need to come together,” he said. “We have to have a voice, and it has to be a loud voice.”

Several members agreed to attend the Tuesday, Aug. 2 public meeting held at 6 p.m. at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai to resist the current redistricting plans.

Jefferson Plaza

Another order of business was discussion on the proposed redevelopment of Jefferson Plaza, an expected $100 million investment by the Hauppauge-based real estate group, Staller Associates.

Members considered preparing a statement relating to several inquiries regarding traffic, architectural design, community benefit initiatives and the preservation of the historic character of the area.

“I like the general approach of this concept,” said one civic association member. “I just don’t want to see a rush to judgment. I want to see us work together collectively to fine-tune it in the best possible way.”

Public safety

Two officers from the Suffolk County Police Department attended the meeting. Several of the members expressed their frustrations over frequent acts of “aggressive panhandling” throughout the area, requesting a greater police presence in the areas where the practice is most widespread.

One member raised the issue of speeding along Canal Road, which he said has been “constant on Canal ever since they fixed the road.”

Noise pollution generated by loud mufflers has also created a public disturbance. While there are laws regulating loud mufflers, the Suffolk police officers said that they are restrained in enforcing them due to provisions in the law that require a measurement of decibels.

The following incidents have been reported by Suffolk County Police:

Centereach

■ Rainbow Shops on Middle Country Road in Centereach reported a shoplifter on July 15. A woman allegedly hid five items of clothing and accessories in a black backpack and fled the store. The merchandise was valued at $128.

Commack

■ Walmart on Crooked Hill Road in Commack reported a shoplifter on July 14. A man allegedly stole assorted items of clothing valued at $73.

■ Scam alert! A woman loading items into her car in the Costco parking lot on Garet Place in Commack on July 14 reported that she was approached by two women asking for directions and later realized that her credit cards were missing from her pocketbook which had been placed on the driver’s side seat. Two similar situations were reported on July 16 in the same parking lot.

■ Ulta Beauty on Veterans Memorial Highway in Commack called the police on July 14 to report that a man and woman entered the store and allegedly stole assorted perfumes valued at $3472.

■ Walmart on Crooked Hill Road in Commack reported a petit larceny on July 15. Two women allegedly stole food, clothing and electronics worth $166.

East Northport

■ A petit larceny was reported at Stop & Shop on Fort Salonga Road in East Northport on July 17. A man and a woman allegedly filled up their shopping cart with assorted food items valued at $544 and walked out.

East Setauket

■ Dunkin’ Donuts on Nesconset Highway in East Setauket reported a burglary on July 16. An unknown man entered the establishment by breaking the drive-thru window and stole two cash registers.

Huntington Station

■ Bloomingdales on Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station called the police on July 14 to report that a man and a woman allegedly stole handbags valued at $10,110.

■ A 2011 blue Mercedes GLX SUV was stolen from a residence on Caldwell Street in Huntington Station on July 16. The vehicle was valued at $7,000.

■ Sunglass Hut at Macy’s on Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station reported that a man entered the store on July 14 and allegedly stole sunglasses valued at $1,837.

■ A 2012 blue Honda Civic was reported stolen from a residence on Maplewood Road in Huntington Station on July 15. The vehicle was valued at $5,000.

Lake Grove

■ Macy’s at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove reported a petit larceny on July 14. Two men allegedly stole miscellaneous Ralph Lauren clothing valued at $773.

■ Two women allegedly stole multiple pairs of ripped jeans from the American Eagle at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove on July 15. The merchandise was valued at $950.

Melville

■ Sephora on Walt Whitman Road in Melville reported a petit larceny on July 12. A person allegedly stole five assorted perfumes valued at approximately $700.

■ A burglary was reported at Evolve Smoke Shop on Walt Whitman Road in Melville on July 17. An unknown man entered the store by breaking the rear glass door and stole boxes of Kratom Shots energy drinks and assorted lighters valued over $7,000 and cash.

■ *Latest scam* A woman shopping at Costco on Broadhollow Road in Melville on July 16 reported that her pocketbook containing cash and credit cards was stolen from the driver’s seat of her car by an unknown man while she was distracted by two women asking for directions.

Miller Place

■ The Bigger Bagel on Route 25A in Miller Place was burglarized on July 16. Unknown suspects threw a brick through the front glass door to gain entry and stole a register containing cash.

Selden

■ CVS on Middle Country Road in Selden reported a shoplifter on July 13. A woman allegedly stole health and beauty products valued at approximately $500.
