Build a Boat Workshop

The Whaling Museum, 301 Main St., Cold Spring Harbor hosts a Build a Boat workshop on Dec. 28 and 30. Families can drop in any time from 1 to 3 p.m. to imagine, design and create unique wooden vessel models out of a variety of materials in this open-ended workshop. Go home with your creation! Winter Solstice Celebration

In celebration of the Winter Solstice, the educators at the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, 180 Little Neck Road, Centerport will offer three children’s workshops over winter break. On Dec. 27 children in grades K through 4 are invited to visit the decorated Vanderbilt Mansion and make a lantern to light as winter days turn cold and dark. On Dec. 28 children in grades K through 4 will explore the collections, learn how wildlife adapts to less sunlight, and make a miniature glow-in-the-dark diorama. On Dec. 29 preschoolers with a caregiver will visit the wildlife dioramas and make a twinkling snow globe. All workshops are offered from 10 a.m. to noon. Fee is $20 per child/ $18 for members. Holiday break at the hatchery

Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery, 1660 Route 25A, Cold Spring Harbor presents several programs during winter break. Cranberry-Orange-Walnut Bread

If you’re looking for last minute gifts or just something to have with a glass of wine or eggnog if the neighbors drop in, think about baking some tea loaves. They’re easy to make and don’t require the attention that cookies do. You just mix the batter and pop them in the oven for an hour or so while you wrap some gifts or write some Christmas cards. 

If you’re giving them as gifts, pick up some colorful cellophane and wrap them in that, then tie them up in some nice ribbon or raffia. If you’re keeping them to serve during the holidays, just wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and slice as needed. 

My all-time favorite for the holidays is Cranberry-Orange-Walnut Bread, but I also like one made with good strong Earl Grey Tea. Another one that everybody loves, that’s as pretty as it is delicious is Citrus-Turmeric Tea Bread. If there’s somebody special you’d really like to make happy, make all three.

Cranberry-Orange-Walnut Bread

YIELD: Makes one loaf

INGREDIENTS: 

Nonstick cooking spray

2 cups flour

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

2/3 cup orange juice

1 1/2 tablespoons finely grated orange zest

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 large egg, well beaten, melted

1 1/2 cups fresh cranberries, washed and coarsely chopped

2/3 cup chopped walnuts

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease a 9” x 5” loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray. In a medium-large bowl thoroughly combine the flour, sugar, salt and baking soda. Add the orange juice and zest, butter and egg and stir well; fold in the cranberries and nuts. Transfer to loaf pan and bake approximately one hour, until a cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Serve with wine, tea, eggnog, coffee or punch.

Earl Grey Tea Loaf

YIELD: Makes one loaf

INGREDIENTS: 

2 Earl Grey tea bags

1 1/4 cups boiling water

1 1/2 cups prunes, chopped

1/2 cup sultana raisins

2 large eggs

2/3 cup brown sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons orange zest

2 1/2 cups flour

2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a 9” x 5” loaf pan with parchment. In a small bowl, steep tea bags in boiling water for at least 10 minutes; discard tea bags and place prunes and raisins in tea;  steep another 10 minutes. In a large bowl  vigorously whisk eggs; add prunes and raisins. Lightly stir in the brown sugar and orange zest. 

In a medium bowl thoroughly combine flour, baking powder and salt, then fold into tea mixture; pour into prepared loaf pan and smooth with rubber spatula; bake approximately an hour, then cool on wire rack. Remove from pan and let cool another hour on wire rack. Serve with butter or cream cheese.

Citrus-Turmeric Tea Loaf

YIELD: Makes one loaf

INGREDIENTS: 

Nonstick cooking spray

1 1/2 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 teaspoon ground turmeric

2 tablespoons freshly grated lemon zest

1 cup + 2 tablespoons sugar

3/4 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt

2 large eggs

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 navel orange, sliced thin

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease a 9” x 5” loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray, then line it with parchment and leave a little overhang for lifting the loaf out of the pan. In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and turmeric. In a medium bowl thoroughly combine the lemon zest with the one cup sugar; whisk in sour cream, eggs and lemon juice; fold in melted butter; add wet mixture to dry mixture, stirring just until blended. 

Scrape mixture into prepared loaf pan and smooth top. Lay orange slices over top, sprinkle with remaining two tablespoons sugar and bake 50 to 60 minutes, until a cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Serve with lemon or orange sorbet.

For the first time in program history, the Stony Brook women’s basketball team (9-1) defeated a Power Five opponent at home.

The Seawolves knocked off Washington State (8-3), 69-62, on Sunday, Dec. 19 inside Island Federal Arena behind the trio of senior guard Earlette Scott, senior guard Annie Warren, and graduate forward India Pagan all scoring in double-digits. The victory is also Stony Brook’s first over a Pac-12 opponent.

Scott led the Seawolves in scoring with a team-high 20 points on an efficient 7-of-14 shooting from the floor. Warren finished with 14 points and did a bulk of her damage in the contest in the second half, as she totaled ten points over the final 20 minutes. Pagan added 12 points and graduate forward Leighah-Amori Wool pulled down 10 rebounds to aid Stony Brook to their ninth victory of the season.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Seawolves used an 8-0 scoring run in the third to take the lead at 42-37. Following that run, they never looked back as they did not trail for the remainder of the contest.

“Really proud of this team today, that’s a quality Washington State team who’s super physical. That’s a good team and a quality win for us. We have been balanced and people have been stepping up for us. … Nobody is doing one thing, everyone is contributing. If something’s not working for them they step up in other ways. I’m just really proud that we were able to finish strong through this break with a win,” said head coach Ashley Langford.

“It feels great. This is no surprise to me and the work I put in and the team. I’m really happy that we got the win and we can go into the Christmas break with some confidence,” said senior guard Earlette Scott.

Century-old estate trail reclaimed, enhanced

William K. Vanderbilt II built a hiking trail in the 1920s on his Eagle’s Nest waterfront estate in Centerport that became overgrown and disappeared into the forest. The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, located at Eagle’s Nest, has reclaimed the trail, and held a grand opening in November. Major project donors and museum trustees attended the event in the Rose Garden, which is also the trailhead.

Now called the Solar System Hiking Trail, the course includes a scale model of the Solar System, which complements STEM and astronomy-education programs offered by the Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium.

“This is a long-awaited day. We are grateful to Christine Berardi and the National Grid Foundation for 10 years of outstanding, unwavering support and to Vanderbilt trustee Laura Gerde and her husband, Eric Gerde. Their ongoing contributions to our STEM programming include the exhibits in the Planetarium lobby. Their steadfast support makes it possible for the Museum to expand its work as a leader in astronomy and science education,” said Elizabeth Wayland-Morgan, executive director of the Vanderbilt Museum.

Other project donors are Marilyn and Russell Albanese, BAE Systems, Farrell Fritz Attorneys, Northwell Health, People’s United Bank, and PFM Asset Management.

Wayland-Morgan said Dave Bush, the director of the Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium, “single-handedly created the Solar System trail — I don’t think there’s a program like this anywhere else.” She also thanked Jim Munson, the museum’s operations supervisor. “Jim noticed portions of the original trail and saw its potential. He said let’s do this.” 

Bush said that scale models of the solar system have been created before at museums, science centers, and universities. “But the Vanderbilt’s trail is likely the only one that traverses a one-mile hiking trail with hundreds of feet in elevation changes,” he said. “It is an opportunity for visitors to learn about the bodies in our solar system and its vast scale, and to see and experience parts of the museum property that have never been seen before by the public.”

The Grinch decided to make an early stop in Stony Brook village this year: Cracking the water main and flooding the basement of the Three Village Inn and Mirabelle Restaurant and Tavern, causing Santa’s Brunch to be canceled.

Despite the damage done, the Three Village Inn’s employees and contractors are performing a herculean effort, working around the clock to have the inn and restaurant back up and running for dinner on Thursday, Dec. 23.

The Three Village Inn and Mirabelle Restaurant and Tavern is located at 150 Main Street in Stony Brook village. Reservations can be made by calling 631-751-0555.

The Greek letter versions of the variants are beating up on Suffolk County, just as families prepare to gather during the holidays and New Year.

Suffolk County reported a 13.6% positive testing rate on Dec. 20, which is the highest rate in over a year, according to County Executive Steve Bellone (D).

“The omicron variant is, without question, powering a surge in cases here,” Bellone said on a conference call with reporters. “We are seeing that play out in long lines for testing as the holiday season continues and as Christmas and New Year’s approach.”

Indeed, Bellone announced that he is using his emergency powers to create three new testing sites on Long Island. The county will open a site at Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach on Dec. 27, in West Sayville on Dec. 27, and in the Sound Beach area on Jan. 4.

Bellone said he chose these sites near locations where the positivity rate is higher.

Bellone encourages residents to visit the county’s website, at suffolkcountyny.gov/covid19 to get details about signing up for tests at these new locations.

As for holiday preparations, Bellone and Dr. Gregson Pigott, commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, suggested residents could continue with their holiday gathering plans as long as they take adequate precautions.

“It’s important to be vaccinated with Pfizer or Moderna,” Pigott said. “It’s more important to get that third shot, that booster shot, that’ll give you the maximum protection.”

Infectious disease experts urged residents to remain vigilant about the virus during the current surge and as people prepare to visit families.

“I would suggest making sure that everyone test for COVID and receive a negative test result” before family gatherings, Sean Clouston, associate professor in the Department of Family, Population and Preventive Medicine, explained in an email. “This is especially true for those in which there are individuals who are either unvaccinated, or those where attendees either are vaccinated but aged 60 and older.” Hospitals in the area have seen a dramatic increase in emergency room visits from residents who contracted COVID.

“The number of COVID hospitalizations has tripled in the last three weeks,” Dr. Adrian Popp, chair of Infection Control at Huntington Hospital/Northwell Health, wrote in an email.

Popp explained that patients who have been vaccinated have a milder form of COVID, while unvaccinated patients have suffered more severe symptoms. About two thirds of hospitalized patients are unvaccinated at Huntington Hospital, while several patients are in the intensive care unit.

With the increase in omicron cases, Popp explained that “we are all concerned that we may be overwhelmed if too many sick patients will show up all at once in the emergency room.”

To be sure, even with the increase in hospitalizations from the fall, the number of people batting the disease in the hospital remains well below peak levels. As of a year ago, 526 people battled COVID in the hospital. This week, that number stood at 326.

“The numbers are increasing, but they are still less than they were,” Bellone said.

Dr. Sunil Dhuper, chief medical officer at Port Jefferson’s St. Charles Hospital, suggested a three-pronged approach to defending against the next phase in the spread of COVID.

Getting vaccines and boosters is the first and most important step. Treating vulnerable residents with monoclonal antibodies is the second, and testing and wearing masks is the third step.

GlaxoSmithKline’s monoclonal treatment, called sotrovimab, works the best against omicron, Dhuper said.

At this point, the supply of that treatment, however, is limited. Dhuper hopes to get the supply issue resolved this Monday.

Until that is resolved, however, only people who are unvaccinated and who are vaccinated and immunocompromised or over 65 are eligible for this treatment, which is what the National Institutes of Health and Department of Health have recommended, Dhuper said.

The shortage of monoclonal antibodies is “an issue that needs to be addressed at the state and federal levels,” Bellone said. “I’m encouraged by what we’ve seen happening there. It’s an issue that we’ve heard from hospitals. With this surge, we’re seeing all of the capacity tested once again.”

Indeed, hospitals remain prepared to increase their staffing levels, particularly in January when people return from traveling and visiting family members.

“Everybody is aware that we may call upon any employee at any time, even if they are on vacation if we begin to see that the system is getting overwhelmed,” Dhuper said.

The Gitto Group is one step closer to starting the construction on its latest project in Upper Port. 

Vice President Rob Gitto said that earlier this month the group received approval from the Village of Port Jefferson and the Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency to finally close on an economic development package that will assist as the developer constructs a mixed-use project on the corner of Main Street and North Country Road. Gitto said the complex will include 36 rental units and two retail spaces below. It is to be located where the PJ Lobster House originally stood, as well as a former florist shop.

“We’re excited to have another project in the village,” Gitto said. “It’s a very important corner and we’re looking forward to building a nice product.”

The Gitto Group has built another development uptown, The Hills at Port Jefferson Village, which has been at a steady full capacity since opening. These projects are part of the continuous plan to revitalize Upper Port.

According to the IDA, Port Development, an affiliate of The Gitto Group, plans to demolish the two buildings, 4,400 square feet and 1,800 square feet respectively, and replace them with a three-story building totaling 48,660 square feet, spending $15 million to replace the now-vacant buildings. 

The complex will have 32 one-bedroom apartments of approximately 750-850 square feet each and four two-bedroom units of about 1,200 square feet. 

Resident amenities will include a fitness room, lobby and lounge spaces, an indoor garage, and a private outdoor patio and lawn/garden area.  

The ground level of the proposed building, within walking distance of the LIRR’s Port Jefferson station, will include 1,800 square feet of commercial/retail space.

“There is currently a high demand for rental housing in the Town of Brookhaven and the Port Jefferson area and this project will add to the supply,” said Frederick C. Braun III, chairman of the Brookhaven IDA. “Also, this development will make a positive, long-term economic impact on the village and further the revitalization of Upper Port.”

The project is expected to generate 133 construction jobs and five full-time equivalent permanent jobs. Construction is expected to take 18 months.

Gitto added that people will begin to see more movement on the property now that approvals have been secured. 

“We are starting the preliminary work,” he said. “We’re getting ready for demolition but we won’t be able to start construction until March.”

Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit detectives are investigating a robbery that occurred at a Commack bank the afternoon of Dec. 12.

A man entered Chase bank, located at 39 Vanderbilt Parkway, at 12:59 p.m. and allegedly handed a teller a note demanding cash. The teller complied with the suspect’s demands and gave him cash from the drawer. The robber fled in an unknown direction.

The robber is described as an adult male, approximately 6 feet tall with a medium build. He was wearing a dark-colored jacket and hat and a blue face mask.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the robbery to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.

With 997 career varsity points and counting, Mount Sinai’s Drew Feinstein drained a triple from the corner for the juniors 1.000th career varsity-point in a home game against Hauppauge Dec. 18. 

Feinstein a varsity player since the 8th grade seemed unfazed by the accomplishment saying he did nothing different to prepare for the history making game. 

“Pretty much do what I do just play just gotta play hard,” said Feinstein, who led his team in scor-ing with 22 points. “I always show up in the second half.” 

Despite a 4th quarter surge, the Mustangs fell short 76-69 in the non-league matchup. 

Derrek Shechter hit a pair of treys, 5 from the free throw line and 3 from the floor for 17 points and Dominic Pennzello the freshman banked 10.

The Mustangs are back in action Dec. 21 with a road game against Miller Place where tip-off is 4:30 p.m.

It was the battle of the Bulls when Smithtown East traveled to Smithtown West High School where East faced an unrelenting defensive press by Smithtown West in a League III matchup Dec. 20. Smithtown West caused several turnovers that resulted in a 21-point lead at the half. West benched their starters and played the balance of their roster in the 62-36 victory to remain undefeated.  

Smithtown West senior forward Patrick Burke led his team in scoring with a free throw and eight field goals for 17 points. Teammate Tyler Anderson followed netting 14, and Lorenzo Rappa banked eight. 

Smithtown East sophomore Benjaman Haug hit a three-pointer five from the floor and six from the free throw line for 19 points.
