Throughout the month of July, Emma Clark Library, 120 Main St., Setauket will be collecting nonperishable food items to be donated to local food pantries and nonprofit organizations. 

Food pantries often see bare shelves during the summer and need help with restocking items for those who are food insecure. Library teen volunteers will be collecting contributions that the public donates to the Library and delivering the food to various food pantries throughout the community. 

Donation boxes will be located in the Library lobby to the left of the Circulation Desk, and all are welcome to donate during Library hours. Some suggestions for food items include cereal, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruits and vegetables, rice, beans, tuna fish, juice, gum, snacks (pretzels, granola bars, trail mix, cookies), pasta, and pasta sauce.

Theatre Three will host a food and personal care items drive in honor of Fr. Patrick Riegger for his 12 years of service and dedication to the community on Sunday, June 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Items will  be collected at the Infant Jesus Church food pantry, 110 Hawkins St. (off Myrtle Ave.) in Port Jefferson Village.

Donations needed include juice, boxed milk, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, flour, sugar, Maseca corn flour, cooking oil, coffee, pancake mix (complete), pancake syrup, canned fruit, healthy snacks as well as shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, toilet paper, baby shampoo, baby wash, baby wipes, diapers (size 4 & 6), baby powder, Desitin and lotion. Terryville Road Elementary School will once again host its Souper Bowl.

The student council has decorated boxes to represent the two teams headed to the Super Bowl. From Feb. 2 to Feb. 11, students will “root” for the LA Rams or Cincinnati Bengals by placing donated food items into that team’s box. 

Student council advisor Dana Urbinati and social worker Tiffany Liebling are thrilled about this initiative. 

“This game will only have winners!” said Liebling, who has started to collaborate with the American Legion Food bank. Together they will help families right here in our community. 

Principal Annemarie Sciove is excited to see the kids “compete” this way. 

“There are so many families who need help,” she said. “This project not only helps them, but it’s our core beliefs in action.”

GIVING BACK 

To celebrate the spirit of giving this holiday season, the students of St. James’ Harbor Country Day School’s Student Council conducted their annual food drive to benefit the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry. Over the course of two weeks, more than 500 pieces of nonperishable food items were collected. On Nov. 15, those donated items were then delivered to the Food Pantry by Student Council officers. 

As shared by Pat Westlake, the Director of the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry, “The Smithtown Food Pantry looks forward to welcoming the students from Harbor Country Day School – as their green bus pulls into our driveway we know it is filled with food that the students have collected. The smiling students have collected the food, sorted, and packed it. They now carry it into the pantry where it will be distributed to our neighbors who suer from food insecurity. The pantry relies solely on donations and Harbor Country Day School greatly helps us to fulll our mission of providing assistance to all who come to us. During October we estimate that we provided over 15,000 meals to our clients and we look forward to continuing our eorts as the holiday season approaches.”

The Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry has been serving Smithtown and the surrounding communities since it was founded in 1984. In 2021, the organization provided Thanksgiving dinner xings for close to 300 local families.

It’s the season of giving! Theatre Three and the Knights of Columbus Joan of Arc Council 1992 are teaming up this year to host a Thanksgiving Food Drive for the food pantry at Infant Jesus Church in Port Jefferson on Sunday, Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon.  

Please help those who are less fortunate enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with their loved ones. 

The pantry is in need of stuffing, gravy, yams, cranberry sauce, certificates for turkeys, pies, sugar, Maseca corn flour, cooking oil, peanut butter, ketchup, mayonnaise, coffee, hot chocolate, rice (1# and 2# bags/boxes) canned fruit and healthy snacks.

Baby items are needed including diapers size 6, baby shampoo, baby wipes, baby powder, Desitin and lotion. Toiletries are also in low supply including shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine pads and toilet paper. 

Donations of grocery gift cards and cash to purchase whatever else is needed will also be accepted. 

Volunteers will be set up in front of Infant Jesus Church, 110 Myrtle Ave., the convent building behind the church at 110 Hawkins Street, and Infant Jesus Chapel at St. Charles Hospital, 200 Belle Terre Road. For more information, call Brian at 631-938-6464.

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is hosting a summer drive to collect non-perishable items for school lunches, snacks and personal care products for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, located at St. Joseph’s Church, 59 Church Street, Kings Park.  The pantry is open on Monday and Thursday form 1pm until 4pm. To speak with someone at the pantry, please call 631-269-6635.

Specific items that they are seeking include snack size cookies, chips, pretzels, juice boxes, small bottled water, and salsa and chips. They also need such staples as small bottles of cooking oil, sugar, flour, mustard, mayonnaise, jarred sauce, breadcrumbs, Hamburger Helper, pickles, canned fruit, boxed milk, Pop Tarts and sandwich bags. Personal care items requested are shaving cream, razors, tissues, small hand sanitizers, and laundry detergent.

“During this difficult time, especially after the pandemic, it is important to help our fellow neighbors so donations of the aforementioned items may be dropped off at my office at 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1 A, Smithtown, from now until September 10, between the hours of  9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.
