On May 8, Councilwoman Jane Bonner (center) was at Heritage Park (“The Wedge”) in Mt. Sinai to meet with Jennifer Roth (left), Membership Secretary for the Mt. Sinai Civic Association and Robert Woods (right), Director of North Shore Youth Council.

They were there to unveil the new, recently installed playground equipment. The Heritage Park amenities include ball fields, multi-purpose field, playground, restrooms and walking trails. There are also electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot and a picnic area. 

Located at 633 Mount Sinai-Coram Road, Heritage Park is one of the premier recreation facilities in Brookhaven Town. It is open 7 days a week from sunrise to sunset. Parking is free. On May 8, Councilwoman Jane Bonner met with Ann Becker, former Mt. Sinai Civic Association president, to present her with the Town of Brookhaven Women’s Recognition Award for her “Outstanding Service in the Town of Brookhaven.”

Ms. Becker was unable to attend the March 21 event, so Councilwoman Bonner brought the award to her. The recipients of the 2024 Women’s Recognition Awards were honored at the 38th Annual Women& Recognition Night, held on March 21 at Brookhaven Town Hall. The event, which was open to the public, was sponsored by the Town’s Office of Women Services, Department of General Services.

Nominated by members of the community, the winners either live or work in the Town of Brookhaven and have demonstrated excellence in their endeavors in a variety of areas. Nominations were considered by members of Brookhaven’s Women’s Advisory Board and selected based on resumes and letters of recommendation.

Firehouse Restaurant and Bar celebrated their grand opening with a ribbon cutting on April 20. Photo from TOB

On Saturday, April 20, Brookhaven  Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico, community members and local firefighters were in Sound Beach to celebrate the the grand opening of the new Firehouse Restaurant and Bar with a ribbon cutting .

Formerly The Hartlin Inn, the restaurant, located at 30 New York Avenue, is a tribute to fallen New York City Firefighter Joey DiBernardo, who died in 2011 from injuries sustained during a 2005 fire in the Bronx.

Open noon to midnight daily, the menu at the Firehouse Restaurant and Bar includes soups and salads, starters, sandwiches, burgers, entrees, desserts and more. There is also a bar menu and happy hour menu and takeout is available.

On April 29, Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner (fourth from left) stopped by the Leisure Village
Senior Club in Ridge to thank the members for their generous donation of $5000 to Saint Jude Children’s
Research Hospital.

Over the last 3 years, the group has raised and donated $9000 to Saint Jude. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of their founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.

Councilwoman Bonner said, “The work that these volunteers do for the children at St. Jude is truly heroic. It’s a labor of love that pays back ten-fold when you see the smiles on the faces of the children and their parents when they leave the hospital.”

On April 24, Councilwoman Jane Bonner (center) was a guest speaker at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Eastern Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational Services (ESBOCES) Community Legislative Committee meeting. The Community Legislative Committee, which is open to the community, is generally comprised of ESBOCES students, staff, parents, and ESBOCES Board Members. The committee is for those who are interested in learning about the issues impacting school districts and BOCES and how to advocate for positive change.

Also pictured are (left) ESBOCES Chief Operating Officer, David Wicks and (right) ESBOCES Board Vice President, Bill Miller. Councilwoman Bonner said, “The training that the students receive from BOCES will give them a smoother path when they are seeking employment. Navigating the employment market can be a challenge, but the career training they get at BOCES will help to turn their dream job into a reality.”

On April 5, Town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner (center) celebrated the grand opening of Hairology, located in the Crossroads Plaza West, 53 Route 25A in Rocky Point. The new hair salon offers personal service in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Pictured with Councilwoman Bonner is Hairology owner Leah Barnetas (center right, holding scissor), with her friends, family and staff.  

“I am happy to welcome Leah Barnetas to Rocky Point and encourage everyone to stop in, say hello and see what services they offer and make an appointment. It’s a great addition to the community and I wish Leah the best of luck,” said Councilwoman Bonner.

 At the April 4 Brookhaven Town Board meeting, Councilwoman Jane Bonner presented a proclamation to Sarcoidosis of Long Island founder Frank Rivera declaring April as Sarcoidosis Month in the Town of Brookhaven.

Mr. Rivera is a Patients Rising Senate Member and Autoimmune Association volunteer, a Global Genes RARE Foundation Alliance Member and Advocate, an ambassador for The EveryLife Foundation and a Working Group Member.

The organization supports people afflicted with Sarcoidosis, a rare disease characterized by the formation of tiny clumps of inflammatory cells in one or more organs of the body. These clumps can interfere with an organ’s structure and function. Symptoms could include chest pain, seizures, meningitis, swelling of the joints, hearing loss and blurred vision. 

Mr. Rivera founded Sarcoidosis of Long Island in 2012 after being diagnosed with the disease in 2011. He has been a local, state, and federal advocate for Sarcoidosis and has spoken at two Congressional briefings. He is a former National Ambassador for the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research, a Global Genes RARE Foundation Alliance Member and Advocate, an ambassador for The EveryLife Foundation and a Working Group Member. On April 6, Town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner (6 th from left) attended the Rocky Point Historical Society’s 3 rd New York Regiment Encampment held at the Hallock Homestead Museum (c.1721).

The regiment spent the day encamped at the museum, firing volleys and marching to the Long Island Sound. Activities at the all-day event also included the dedication of the Joan Dochtermann Pollinator Garden, guided tours, and a mourning salute by the 3rd NY Regiment to the patriots buried at the Hallock Burying Ground on Hallock Lane.

The Hallock Homestead Museum is located at 172 Hallock Landing Road in Rocky Point. The Rocky Point Historical Society promotes and encourages historical research of the historic north shore community. For more information, go to www.HistoricalSociety.org RockyPointHistoricalSociety.org .

At the March 14 Brookhaven Town Board meeting, Councilwoman Jane Bonner honored the Rocky Point High School Varsity Cheerleading Team that placed first in Small Division II at the Universal Cheer Association National High School Cheerleading Championships. The championships were held from February 9-12 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.

For more than 40 years, the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship has been the culmination of the season for cheerleaders across the nation. It’s the most prestigious high school national championship in the country and the perfect opportunity for cheerleading teams to get together and celebrate each other.

Councilwoman Bonner said, “I am very proud to honor the Rocky Point High School Varsity Cheerleading Team. These outstanding young women worked very hard to be winners. Their coaches and parents should also be recognized for their support of the program year in and year out.”

On February 2, Town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner and Mt. Sinai Miller Place Chamber of Commerce President Holly Bottiglieri helped celebrate the grand opening of BODY20, the new boutique fitness studio located at 275 Route 25A, Suite 28, Route 25A in Miller Place, with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

BODY20 is a personalized, technology-based workout experience that creates up to 150 times more muscle contractions versus conventional training. Combined with their personalized workout experience, results are achieved in just 20 minutes that would require hours in a traditional gym. 

“I am happy to welcome Body20 to Miller Place and I encourage everyone to stop in meet the staff and see what they have to offer. It’s a great addition to the community and I wish them the best of luck,” said Councilwoman Bonner.
