Longwood Lions nip Ward Melville Patriots

The Ward Melville Patriots looked to make it two wins in a row of this early football season in front of their home crowd Friday night, after their impressive season opening, 34-12, road win over Sachem East a week earlier.

After falling behind by two scores, the Patriots clawed their way back in the opening minutes of the third quarter off a three-yard touchdown run by senior running back Nick Gaffneym who set up the play before courtesy of a 57-yard pass play to wide receiver Brody Morgan. The point after kick failed at the 9:05 mark as the Patriots trailed 13-6. Morgan answered next with another pass reception from quarterback Andrew Belli this time covering 29 yards for the score to trail by one. Again, Morgan finished what he started, kicking the extra point to tie the game a 13-13.

Longwood found the endzone to retake the lead with 1:52 left to go in the third and with the kick retook the lead, 20-13. Four minutes into the fourth quarter the Patriots defense stalled Longwood’s offensive drive, forcing them to kick a field goal to stretch their lead, 23-13.

Ward Melville answered with a Belli 15-yard pass play to Jackson Weber who found the endzone, and with Morgan’s foot, trailed 23-20. The Lions were able to fend off the Patriots late game surge to put the game away in the Sept. 16 Division I matchup.

The loss drops the Patriots to 1-1 and will look to resume their winning ways Sept. 24 with a road game against Commack. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Holding the horses: Mount Sinai Mustangs scoreless in season opener against Ward Melville

Coaches often say a team must “play up” to raise its game. That is just what the Mustangs of Mount Sinai did Monday, Aug. 29, visiting the powerhouse of League II, the Ward Melville Patriots, to open their 2022 season.

Ward Melville dominated the time of possession in the first half, scoring four unanswered goals against their League IV visitors. The Patriots added to their lead in the second half, tacking on two more for a 6-0 shutout.

The Patriots shared the wealth as Wilman Castellon, Aiden Burgueno and Owen Haviland each found the net, and teammates Ryan Flockhart, Ron Palillo and Dylan Fastenberg each scored a goal apiece.

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, Aug. 31, as the Mustangs go on the road again to face another non-league opponent, the Kings Park Kingsmen. The Patriots will also have their hands full in a road game against a perennially talented Brentwood team. Gametime is 4 p.m.

Ward Melville Patriots punch ticket to county finals

It was Ward Melville senior Courtney Quinn’s goal in the opening minutes of the second half that gave the Patriots their first lead of the game over William Floyd in the Suffolk class AA semi-finals at home May 21.

Kate Spinks’ shot split the pipes two minutes later for the insurance goal followed by Grace Balocca who stretched the net to put the Patriots out front, 8-5. Floyd threatened with 15 minutes left to trail by one before the Patriots slammed the door rattling off four goals to win it 12-7. Quinn had two goals and two assists, Grace Balocca found the back of the cage three times as did Kate Spinks and Ava Simonton had an assist and two goals in the win. Ava Carrillo had six saves in net.

Ward Melville, the No. 2, seed faced Northport, the No. 1 seed, for the Suffolk championship game Wednesday, May 25. Results were not available at press time.

Ward Melville Patriots plow past T-Birds

The Patriots of Ward Melville led Connetquot by four goals after the first half and then slammed the door in the second for a 13-7 victory April 30.

Midfielder Emma Retzlaff, a sophomore, led the way for the Patriots with one assist and four goals in the Division I matchup. Teammates Grace Balocca and Ava Simonton scored three goals each along with one assist, and Jillian Gironda had two goals and two assists. Senior Courtney Quinn had eight draw controls in the contest, and Ava Carrillo had six saves in net.

The win keeps the Patriots undefeated at 10-0 in league 12-0 overall with four games remaining before post season play begins.

Ward Melville Patriots host Brentwood in Childhood Cancer Awareness game

Seven-year-old Jase Rossi from Lake Ronkonkoma has been battling cancer for the last 813 days, according to Ward Melville head coach Joseph Burger, whose team hosted Brentwood in a Childhood Cancer Awareness softball game Saturday morning.

Jase along with his parents made their way to the field through an arch of balloons and a canopy of raised bats to take the field.

Over the last two plus years, Jase has had to endure countless blood platelet transfusions, weekly chemo and steroid treatments, multiple trips to the ER and extended hospital stays yet stood strong and threw out the first pitch to Ward Melville’s Maddie Kiely.

All the girls wore yellow jerseys commemorating the event that help raise over $3,795 in online donations the money will go to the Friends of Karen an organization that helps families with children stricken with life threatening illnesses.

A gift was presented to Jase a Nintendo switch video game console just before both teams took the field where the Patriots put on a perfect 12-0 shutout performance. Ward Melville sophomore Victoria Killigrew threw her first career no-hitter in the victory.

Commack edges Patriots

The Patriots of Ward Melville took a four-run lead in the early going of the third game of a three-game series against Commack at home Friday, April 8, but the Cougars rallied late in the game to edge ahead of the Patriots to win the League II matchup, 7-5.

Ward Melville went 1-2 in the series and retake the field with a road game against Walt Whitman for the first of the three-game series April 11. First pitch is 4:15 p.m.

It was a one-goal game most of the way when Ward Melville’s Grace Balocca’s stick stretched the net to edge ahead, 6-5, with just under four minutes left in regulation. William Floyd was unable to answer when Emilia Retzlaff scored the insurance goal for the Patriots at the 2:36 mark, and Grace Mulham split the pipes in the final minute for the 8-5 victory.

Retzlaff led the way for the Patriots with four goals. Balocca had two, and teammates Mulham and Ava Simonton both scored in the Division I road game April 4. Ava Carrillo had seven saves on the day.

The win lifts Ward Melville to 4-0 in league, 6-0 overall, to sit atop the Division I leaderboard.

The Patriots retake the field April 8 where they’ll host Half Hollow Hills. Game time is 4:15 p.m.

Ward Melville Patriots fall to Chaminade

Ward Melville had their hands full when Chaminade High School’s boys lacrosse came to visit, and the Patriots found themselves down 11 goals at the end of the third quarter.

The Patriots managed one more goal in the final period, falling 14-3 in the non-league match-up March 26.

The Patriots took to the field to begin league season play with a road game against Walt Whitman March 29.

As the regular season draws to a close, the Patriots of Ward Melville looked for a win against Walt Whitman to carry that moment into the playoffs. Carry it they did, winning 66-52 at home in the League II matchup Feb. 8.
Senior Frank Carroll topped the scoring charts for the Patriots netting seven field goals and three from the line for 17 points. Teammate Tommy Engel hit two triples, three from the floor and two from the free throw line scoring 14. KJ Anderson banked 12.
Ward Melville head coach Alex Piccirillo pulled his starters later in the game resulting in nine different players scoring. Ward Melville finishes up in League at 12-2, 17-3 overall, for second place behind Northport. Post season play begins Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Northport Tigers Nip Ward Melville Patriots

The Ward Melville Patriots boys basketball team hosted the Northport Tigers, the League II leader, Feb. 1 in a game that would need more than 32 minutes of regulation to decide.

After Ward Melville was held scoreless in the second quarter, the Patriots outscored the Tigers in the second half. Tommy Ribaudo’s foul shot tied the game 34 all with eight seconds left in regulation when time ran out forcing overtime.

Tied at 36-36 with 12 seconds left in the four-minute overtime period, Northport senior Owen Zimmerman nailed a triple to take a 39-36 lead for the final score. Senior forward Nick Watts led Northport in scoring with 11, followed by Brendon Carr’s 10 points, and J.J. Ahlstrand netted eight. Tommy Ribaudo topped the scoring chart for the Patriots with 11, and KJ Anderson banked 10.

Both teams have two games remaining before post season play begins Feb 15.
