According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. with 1 in 5 people being diagnosed with it in their lifetime. May is designated as National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month and with summer right around the corner, it’s important to know how to keep your family sun-safe during outdoor activities. This past Saturday, May 13, families across Long Island attended Block the Sun, Not the Fun hosted by Stony Brook Cancer Center at Smith Haven Mall.

The interactive, fun, and educational event featured family fun opportunities presented by Healthcare and Community Partners and Stony Brook’s Wolfie mascot aimed at promoting sun safety and teaching the community about preventing skin cancer. Before the mall event, Stony Brook Cancer Center and Stony Brook Dermatology Associates hosted free skin cancer screenings for nearly hundred individuals and Dr. Tara Huston, Director of the Melanoma Disease Management Team at Stony Brook Medicine, led an educational program for patients about melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Stony Brook Cancer Center and Stony Brook Dermatology Associates are hosting free skin cancer screenings, followed by its family-friendly event at Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove featuring activities like:

  • Interacting with Long Island Aquarium critters

  • Mascot appearances from Stony Brook’s Wolfie, Urban Air’s Urbie, Splish from Splish Splash, LI Aquarium’s Jimbo Jaws and Splashes of Hope’s Vincent Van Monkey

  • Magic tricks, a balloon artist, a caricaturist and face painting fun for the whole family

  • Striking a pose in a photo booth

  • Free giveaways and discount coupons from community partners

Stony Brook healthcare experts will be on hand to answer questions and provide resources pertaining to sun safety, including prevention and resources for skin cancer screening.

Flip Circus heads to the Smith Haven Mall on April 14
Featuring new acts in an intimate big top experience

The circus is coming to town! As part of its 2023 national tour, FL!P Circus will put down stakes at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove from April 14 to 24. The show will celebrate the great American circus tradition and highlight the enduring human spirit. 

Created by the Vazquez family, the big top experience that wowed audiences across the country when it debuted last year will feature fan favorites alongside an assemblage of brand new international acts that are sure to amaze and amuse.

On its debut tour, audiences and critics alike raved about this intimate new circus brand and its energetic show which takes place under a distinctive red and white, 800-seat, climate-controlled big top tent with no seat more than 50 feet from the ring. The front row is so close that those sitting there often find themselves being brought into the ring to be part of the fun!

There is nothing quite like live entertainment and Fl!p Circus celebrates the great American circus tradition that has brought families and friends together to celebrate life and create fun, lasting memories for over 200 years. Audiences are invited to leave their cares behind and enter a world where the laughs are plentiful and the wows only stop when the show ends. 

Ringmaster Arthur Figueroa serves as host of this new circus adventure which will feature audience favorites Stiv and Roni Bello, Italy’s “siblings of silliness”; a trapeze act by Carolina Vazquez; and the Duo Vanegas on the rotating Wheel of Steel.

The show will also introduce The Bello Sisters, who amazed audiences on America’s Got Talent with their incredible body-bending and handstand skills; the Super Tumblers acrobatic act; the Bingo Troupe featuring a high-energy display of dance, acrobatics and unicycle, and more. The entire production will move to the beat of the live FL!P Circus Band which provides the soundtrack to all the fun.

Suffolk County Police arrested a Smith Haven Mall security guard on March 9 for allegedly committing a sex act while on duty last year.

Jose Irizarry was working as a security officer in the Lake Grove mall on August 29, 2022, when he approached a 24-year-old woman who he suspected of shoplifting. Irizarry, under the guise of escorting the woman out of the mall brought her into an employees only corridor and then into a storage room, where he allegedly forced the victim to perform a sex act on him in exchange for her being allowed to leave the mall.

Fourth Squad detectives arrested Irizarry today at the Fourth Precinct at 4:34 p.m. Irizarry, 33, of Holbrook, was charged with Criminal Sex Act 1st Degree.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The Jazz Loft is taking it on the road on December 10 with a performance of holiday favorites at the Smith Haven Mall’s Center Court in Lake Grove from 2 to 4 p.m. Jazz Loft founder Tom Manuel, Steve Salerno and Dean Johnson will be providing some jazzy holiday classics for shoppers. The performance is part of the Jazz Loft outreach mission called the Dispatch Series, which brings music out into the community. The concert is FREE!

Bad Little Big Band’s Holiday Show

December 8 at 7 p.m.

The Jazz Loft presents the Bad Little Big Band’s Holiday Show, a 12-piece band, directed by composer, arranger and pianist Rich Iacona, featuring vocalist Madeline Kole.

 

 Ray Anderson’s Seasonal Solstice Party

December 9 at 7 p.m.

What better way to mark the longest hours of darkness and the rebirth of the sun, than to experience the powerful energy of Jazz with Ray Anderson’s Seasonal Solstice Party at The Jazz Loft, with Ray Anderson, trombone, vocals, sousaphone; Mark Helias on bass; Jeremy Carlstedt on drums and Steve Salerno on guitar.

Interplay Jazz Orchestra Family Show

December 10 at 1 p.m.

17-piece big band co-directed by Joe Devassy, trombone & Gary Henderson, trumpet is a Jazz Loft tradition. This is a wonderful concert to introduce live jazz to children and grandchildren. It’s a holiday family affair! $

 

Egg Nog Romp

December 10, 7 p.m.

It’s The Jazz Loft’s traditional Egg Nog Romp program featuring the Loft’s six-piece band led by Tom Manuel. This special Saturday show makes it the perfect break from the holiday rush. The Jazz Loft’s legendary homemade egg nog will be available, as well as the usual beverages..

Nutcracker Holiday Show

December 15, 16 & 17 at 7 p.m.

The Jazz Loft will be presenting the Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, one of the most often performed jazz versions of the holiday classic. The show will feature The Jazz Loft’s 17-piece Big Band, led by Tom Manuel, and Danny Bacher on vocals.

Jazz Nativity

December 18 at 6 p.m.

Candlelight jazz nativity service featuring the Biblical Christmas story with Jazz sextet and featuring Metropolitan Opera soprano opera Susanna Phillips. This performance will include an impressive lineup of jazz artists teamed up with guest narrators who will share the classic biblical Christmas story. Journey with the Three Wise Men as they travel to Bethlehem, join Mary and Joseph as they follow the Star and celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus.

Nicole Zuraitis’ Jazz Christmas Party

Grammy nominated vocalist Nicole Zuraitis appears backed by a big band ensemble to present classic holiday chestnuts.

On Friday, Nov. 25, at noon the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove will be converted into a winter wonderland, with a state-of-the-art Christmas village for shoppers to experience at Christmas House Long Island. A ten-room portion of the shopping center will be transformed by Hollywood and Broadway set designers, utilizing the latest lighting and digital technology to depict festive and contemporary holiday scenes. This is the first year that Smith Haven Mall will host Christmas House, which will open for visitors through early January.

Christmas House will bring guests through the holidays of yesteryear and today, with imagery depicting various Christmas settings, ranging from the North Pole with indoor snow and Santa’s Workshop,- to sets designed to replicate iconic movie scenes from Elf, Harry Potter, and the Nightmare Before Christmas, among other films. Modern LED lighting helps guide the tours through various settings, with screens, fireplaces, and Christmas trees, where guests are encouraged to snap selfies and Christmas Pictures.

 

 

This year’s fully indoor exhibit will also feature two new additions to the Christmas House repertoire, including a complete replica of Blockbuster Video, where guests can relive the memorable moments of selecting a holiday film on VHS tapes, and a Harry Potter Christmas, where guests will be brought to the halls of Hogwarts decorated for the holiday as is depicted often in the films.

 

 

For admission, guests can reserve days and times at www.ChristmasHouseLongIsland.com with adult tickets costing $24.99 and children ages three-to-ten for $19.99. Children under the age of three are admitted free of charge, for weekdays, with weekends (Fri.-Sun.) priced at $29.99 for Adults and $24.99 for children. It is expected that nearly 100,000 local residents will visit Christmas House this year throughout the holiday season.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Fourth Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public’s help to identify the woman who allegedly stole items from a Lake Grove store in September.

A woman allegedly stole items from Macy’s located at the Smith Haven Mall on September 17.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest. Suffolk County Police arrested two men on Aug 6 after they robbed a man of his vehicle in Lake Grove.

A man was charging his Chevrolet Bolt in the parking lot of the Smith Haven Mall when he fell asleep and was awoken to someone searching his pockets at 2 p.m. Two men demanded money, then sprayed the victim in the face with an irritant and forced him out of the vehicle. The men fled in the victim’s vehicle.

Following an investigation, the pair were located one hour later at 7-Eleven, located at 2209 Middle Country Road, Centereach. Justin Frare was sitting in the passenger seat of the Chevrolet and Christopher Danielo was located inside the store with the victim’s credit cards. Fourth Squad detectives, assisted by Fourth and Sixth Precinct patrol officers, charged Frare, 32, of Bay Shore, and Danielo, 32, of Farmingville, with Robbery 2nd Degree, Grand Larceny 3rd Degree and Grand Larceny 4th Degree.

Frare and Danielo will be held overnight for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Aug. 7..

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Marvel at the grace and strength of the Alexa Swing Pole act and Shirley Larible’s dazzling aerial strap act. America’s own Chicago AllStars astound with incredible acrobatics. Two of the world’s finest jugglers, Dede Larible and Luva, each present their own sensational style of this timeless art form. 

The multi-talented Bingo Troupe from Ukraine, who recently fled on foot to Poland to escape the war-torn country and make it to the United States to star in the show, fills the tent with their lively energy and inspired performances, as the live FLIP Circus Band keeps the party going from beginning to end.
