Call for Artists

The Art League of Long Island 65th Annual Members’ Exhibition invites current Art League members ages 18 and up to submit their entry for display in the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery February through April 2022. The entry deadline is February 7, 2022.

Artists from all walks of life, those just beginning their journey into the visual arts and established exhibiting artists, will put their best foot forward exhibiting their artwork in mediums such as painting, drawing, collage, photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, fiber arts, glass art, wood, graphic art, and more.  Due to the large number of works, the exhibit is shown in two parts. Part One (artist last names A-L) exhibits February 19 through March 11 and Part Two (artist last names M-Z) exhibits March 19 through April 8.  Artists’ receptions and awards presentations are scheduled for Saturday, February 26 and Saturday, March 26 respectively, with time periods to be determined.

All member entries will be exhibited, subject to guidelines outlined in the prospectus posted at www.artleagueli.org/65th-annual-members-exhibition .  Awards of excellence and honorable mentions of the art on display will be selected by guest juror Mary Cantone, owner-curator of the William Ris Gallery in Jamesport, NY. The gallery is open to the public, free of charge, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 5pm and Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. The Art League of Long Island, 107 E. Deer Park Ave., Dix Hills invites artists from Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn, and Queens to submit entries to the upcoming juried exhibit featuring works by artists who call the four counties of the island home.  The 60th Long Island Artists Exhibition is now a biennial exhibit and will be on view in the Art League’s spacious Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery December 4 through January 21, 2022.   The deadline to submit applications is Friday, November 5.

Entry for each artist is limited to five works not previously exhibited in the Art League of Long Island’s gallery, one of which may be chosen from among submissions by the exhibition juror.  Two and three-dimensional original work in any medium may be submitted, including photography and fine craft, with the exception of videos.

The Art League is honored to have Joshua Ruff serve as juror for the Long Island Artists Exhibition. Joshua Ruff is the Deputy Director and Director of Collections & Interpretation at the Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages, in Stony Brook. Mr. Ruff is a graduate of Syracuse University (BAs in Broadcast Journalism and also in History) and Stony Brook University (MA in History). He has worked at the Long Island Museum for 24 years in a variety of positions, including as Curator of its History and Carriage Collections.

He was also Senior Lecturer in History at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, NY for 20 years. He has served as an editor of the Long Island History Journal since 2009. Mr. Ruff has curated more than 60 exhibitions, including, most recently, Fire & Form: New Directions in Glass (2021) and Perfect Harmony: The Musical Life and Art of William Sidney Mount (2019), which traveled to the Fenimore Art Museum, in Cooperstown, NY. In addition to co-authoring several books and exhibition catalogs, he has articles in publications that include Magazine Antiques; American Art Review; American History magazine; and the Long Island History Journal.

Huntington Arts Council, 213 Main St., Huntington invites artists to partic­ipate in “A Time For Reflection.”  Entries should focus on landscape works revolving around the theme of reflection and identity.

About the Juror: Barbara Applegate loves art and, like Ralph Waldo Emerson, knows that many artists respond to a special call to create works about the landscape. Ms. Applegate has taught Art History to college students over the last eighteen years and served LIU’s Steinberg Museum of Art, as Coordinator and later Director, for more than twenty years. She seeks opportunities to engage viewers with works of art across all media.

The Atelier at Flowerfield in St. James invites artists ages 16 and up to submit entries for the 2021 Atelier Invitational, online at the link below.

This exhibition, now in its third year, will highlight the work of artists in all visual arts (except photography and video). The exhibition will be held in The Atelier’s 2,000 square foot gallery, which functions both as a professional studio space and exhibition area.

Artists may submit up to four (4) images of original artworks.
Submissions must be received no later than October 15th, 2021
Accepted works will be notified October 22nd, 2021
Works must be brought in by November 4th, 2021, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
Works must be framed and ready to hang with wire.
Entry fee: $50
Opening Reception November 11, 2021, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

The Whaling Museum, 301 Main St., Cold Spring Harbor seeks artists for its 85th Anniversary Juried Exhibit titled 10x10x85.

How does one interpret 85 years of maritime history? By inviting local artists to share their vision on a 10×10 canvas for a juried exhibition to celebrate and inspire, 10x10x85 will feature creative works using a 10×10 inch canvas provided by the museum as a starting point. From there, artists have the choice of painting directly on the canvas, creating a mixed media piece, assemblage, sculpture, or anything else that interprets “85” or “8” or “5,” as long as the finished piece can be hung on a wall. All works will be on sale for $100 each during the exhibition period. There will be a 50/50 split on proceeds with the artist.

All funds raised will support museum education programming. Jurors include Northport artist and former Northport High School art teacher Margaret Minardi, and botanical artist and instructor at The Art League of Long Island and The Atelier at Flowerfield, Elizabeth Fusco.

The Reboli Center for Art and History, 64 Main St., Stony Brook is inviting entries from now until April 21 for a unique fundraising exhibition, Miniatures to Make a Maximum Impact! All participating artists will have their artwork exhibited in the Reboli Design Shop throughout the month of May. “Miniature art has been venerated throughout history, and today there are Miniature Art Societies around the world. The delicate beauty and refinement of these works can be truly amazing.  Now we’re asking contemporary artists of all styles to “paint small” to help support our center and programs in a major way,” said Lois Reboli, a founder of the Reboli Center and the wife of the late artist Joseph Reboli.

“One free canvas will be given to each participant to create for our cause. All entries will be considered as a donation to the Reboli Center, a 501 (c) (3) organization, and all proceeds raised from the sale of each submitted artwork for this event will be used for our free programming and exhibitions,” added Reboli.

Contributing artists may also use their own stretched canvas, linen or panel, which must not exceed 36 square inches (6 inches x 6 inches). Any painting medium is acceptable, and framing is optional. Artists are welcome to submit up to five entries. The artwork must be your own original concept and not a copy of anyone else’s copyrighted material.

Calling all artists! The Huntington Arts Council’s Main Street Gallery, 213 Main St., Huntington seeks submissions for its upcoming exhibit, Paradoxical Paradigms, to be held from Feb. 3 to March 13, 2021.  Deadline to enter is Jan. 4, 2021.
A paradox is defined as something that contradicts itself but is nevertheless true, something that should not exist but defies expectations. Huntington Arts Council is calling for artists to challenge themselves and push the boundaries with what is possible with their art. Pieces that seem impossible yet exist anyway, exploring themes of the impossible and the contradictory.
About the Juror: Kristin Cuomo is the Senior Museum Educator at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, NY. She develops and facilitates interpretive history and arts programming, with a focus on accessibility for all audiences. She curates the museum’s community exhibits, including annual student art shows and exhibits celebrating the work of artists from community partnerships. Prior to the museum, Kristin developed and taught arts programming for out of school time and community programs across Long Island; she also works as an arts manager. She holds a BA in The Arts and Community Programming and is an MA candidate in the Museum Studies program at City University of New York.
