Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced on Aug. 21 that Guillermo Ayala Jr., 30, of Calverton, pleaded guilty to attacking and slashing his ex-girlfriend’s family after they attempted to deny him entry into their home in December 2022.

“This defendant was so determined to carry out violence against the mother of his children that he savagely attacked three of her family members that attempted to stop him,” said District Attorney Tierney. “Thankfully, this defendant now faces a significant prison sentence which will afford the victim and her family a sense of safety and security.”

According to court documents and the defendant’s admissions during his guilty plea allocution, on December 2, 2022, Ayala and the mother of his children went shopping and out to dinner. Afterwards, Ayala drove around for hours demanding that the victim show him her cell phone so that he could see who she had been speaking to. At one point, Ayala pulled over into a desolate area of Riverhead and placed his hands around the victim’s neck to prevent her from breathing. Ayala also held a razor to her throat and threated to kill her if she didn’t give him her phone. Ultimately, the victim was able to convince Ayala to bring her home.

The next evening, the victim met with family members at her parents’ house to discuss her fear for herself and her children following the events of the night before. While the family was gathered, Ayala began knocking on the front door. When the victim’s stepmother answered the door and told Ayala to leave, Ayala pushed his way past her and entered the home. Family members who heard the commotion went to the front door. Ayala then punched the victim’s father and then slashed his face with a razor blade.

When the victim’s uncle attempted to pull Ayala off the victim’s father, Ayala slashed the uncle in the face with the razor, causing a deep, 4.5-inch laceration from the top of his forehead down to the bottom of his jaw and continuing behind his ear, resulting in permanent disfigurement to his face. As the struggle to subdue Ayala continued, Ayala bit both the father and the uncle on their arms. The victim’s aunt attempted to help, and Ayala slashed her arm with the razor blade.

During the altercation, the victim called 911 for help. Members of the Suffolk County Police Department arrived at the scene and saw the razor still in Ayala’s hand as the victim’s family held him on the ground. Ayala was then placed under arrest.

On August 21, 2023, Ayala pleaded guilty before Supreme Court Justice, the Honorable Timothy P. Mazzei, to the charges of one count of Burglary in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony; one count of Assault in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony; and one count of Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, a Class A misdemeanor.

A man allegedly broke into Simply Self Storage, located at 745 Old Willets Path, on September 18 and September 22, and stole various personal items.

Suffolk County Police have arrested four people for burglarizing a Shirley elementary school in September.

Four males entered Hobart S. Elementary School, located at 230 Van Buren St., on September 26 during which they stole food and drew racist graffiti on cabinets and a classroom whiteboard. Following community tips and an investigation by Hate Crimes Unit detectives, Aydan Dellysse-Fox, 19 of Shirley and Salvatore Davis, 19, of Mastic Beach were arrested for the burglary. Two juveniles from Shirley, a 17-year-old S male and a 16-year-old Shirley male were arrested a few days later.

“One of the most valuable tools the Suffolk County Police Department utilizes is its outreach to the community through Crime Stoppers,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison said. “Following the issuance of a Crime Stoppers Alert on this case, an arrest was made within days due to helpful information called into the anonymous hotline. In addition to thanking residents for their support in this case, I commend the detectives of the Hate Crimes Unit for their diligence on this burglary.”

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information on the other subjects involved in this case are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Suffolk County Police arrested a New Jersey man Sept. 27 after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run crash and then stole another vehicle to flee the scene.

Jayson Merceda was driving a 2021 BMW on Charlemagne Drive in Nesconset when he crashed the vehicle into the home at 4 Charlemagne Drive at approximately 1 a.m.  A resident of a nearby home came outside when he heard the crash, and while he was outside, Merceda allegedly entered the man’s home, stole a set of car keys and then stole the man’s 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe.

A short time later, the Tahoe, occupied by Merceda, was located by a Fourth Precinct officer in the parking lot of Conoco, located at 3089 Middle County Road in Lake Grove. Merceda, 29, of Colonia, New Jersey, was charged with burglary,  grand larceny,  leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage and criminal mischief 4th. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 28 at First District Court in Central Islip.

■ Target on Veterans Memorial Highway in Commack called the police on July 24 to report that a man allegedly stole assorted Hanes T-shirts and a Norelco electric razor valued at $180.

■ Walmart on Crooked Hill Road in Commack reported a shoplifter on July 27. A man allegedly stole assorted soaps and food worth $53.

■ Home Depot on Jericho Turnpike in Commack reported a petit larceny on July 27. A man allegedly stole a Ryobi generator valued at approximately $700.

Greenlawn

■ TD Bank on Pulaski Road in Greenlawn was robbed on July 31. A man entered the bank at approximately 1:10 p.m., and handed a teller a note demanding cash. The teller complied and gave the man cash from the drawer, police said.

Huntington Station 

■ Byron Martinez, 23, of Huntington Station was shot and killed after he answered a knock at the door at his home on 5th Avenue at 1:15 a.m. on Aug. 2. Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating.

■ Sunglass Hut on Walt Whitman Road in Melville reported a grand larceny on July 27. Two women entered the store and allegedly stole seven designer sunglasses with a total value of $3250.

■ Best Buy on Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station reported a shoplifter on July 24. A man allegedly stole two Apple watches worth $825.

■ Target on East Jericho Turnpike, Huntington Station called police on July 25 to report that a man allegedly stole assorted electronics valued at $104.

Kings Park

■ CVS on East Main Street in Kings Park reported that several youths entered the store on July 24 and allegedly grabbed assorted groceries valued at $500 before fleeing on bicycles.

Melville

■ A woman shopping at Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace on Walt Whitman Road in Melville reported that someone stole her wallet from her shopping cart and attempted to use her credit cards shortly after.

■ Dick’s Sporting Goods on Walt Whitman Road in Melville reported a shoplifter on July 26. A woman allegedly stole various Nike clothing valued at approximately $900.

■ A 2013 Acura MDX was reported stolen from the driveway of a residence on Naomi Court in Melville on July 25. The keys had been left insid

Port Jefferson Station

■ A black Ancheer electric mountain bike was reported stolen from the Long Island Rail Road parking lot off Main Street in Port Jefferson Station on July 27. The bike, valued at $700, had been locked.

■ An SE Performance bicycle valued at $1,000 was reported stolen from in front of Planet Fitness on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station by an unknown man on July 27. 

■ A blue and yellow bicycle valued at approximately $215 was stolen from a bike rack in front of Rite Aid on Old Town Road in Port Jefferson Station on July 26. The bicycle had been unlocked.

St. James 

■ Car Tech Automotive on Middle Country Road in St. James reported that a catalytic converter valued at $900 was stolen from a 2004 Ford F230 on July 28.

Selden

■ Home Depot on Middle Country Road in Selden reported a grand larceny on July 26. A man and a woman allegedly stole $4,115 worth of electrical supplies.

■ Three men allegedly stole electrical and lighting supplies valued at approximately $2,000 from Home Depot on Middle Country Road in Selden on July 25.

South Setauket

■ Stop & Shop on Pond Path in South Setauket reported two shoplifters on July 30. A man and a woman allegedly loaded grocery and beauty items into a cart and walked out without paying. The items were valued at approximately $730.

■ Home Depot on Pond Path in South Setauket called police on July 25 to report that three men allegedly stole electrical and lighting supplies worth $2,140.

■ A petit larceny was reported at Dick’s Sporting Goods on Jericho Turnpike in Commack on July 23. A man allegedly placed assorted Nike clothing valued at $600 in a bag and walked out without paying.

■ Princess Deli Bagels on Jericho Turnpike in Commack reported a burglary on July 20. Unknown suspects broke the front glass door to gain entry.

■ Scam alert! A woman shopping at Costco Wholesale on Garet Place in Commack reported that while she was loading merchandise into her car on July 21 a woman approached her asking for directions. She later realized that her credit cards had been stolen from her purse which had been on the driver’s seat.

Dix Hills

■ A car was stolen from a driveway on McCulloch Drive in Dix Hills on July 21. The vehicle, a 2022 Audi Q3, was valued at $40,000.

Farmingville

■ A 2022 blue Audi SQ5 was allegedly stolen from the driveway of a residence on Roberta Avenue in Farmingville by an unknown man on July 20. The key fob had been left in the vehicle, which was valued at $30,000.

Huntington

■ Sal D’s Italian Restaurant on Wall Street in Huntington reported a burglary on July 23. Unknown suspects pried open the back door to gain entry and stole cash and the restaurant’s security system.

Huntington Station

■ Liquor Plaza on Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station reported a petit larceny on July 24. A man and a woman allegedly stole several bottles of vodka valued at $70.

Kings Park

■ A handicapped placard was reported stolen from a car parked at St. Johnland Nursing Center on Sunken Meadow Road in Kings Park on July 19.

Lake Grove

■ Bed Bath & Beyond on Nesconset Highway in Lake Grove reported a shoplifter on July 22. A woman allegedly stole a Shark vacuum valued at $350.

■ Police were called to the Macy’s parking lot at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove on July 24. Someone broke the front and rear passenger side windows of a vehicle and stole two iPhones and two pairs of iPods.

Melville

■ Scam alert! A woman shopping at Costco Wholesale on Broadhollow Road in Melville reported that while she was loading merchandise into her car on July 21, she was approached in the parking lot by a woman asking for directions. When she went to a second store she realized that her credit cards were missing from her purse.

■ Dick’s Sporting Goods on Walt Whitman Road in Melville reported a shoplifter on July 23. A woman allegedly entered the store, cut the sensors off of several items of clothing and walked out with the merchandise which was valued at approximately $240.

Port Jefferson Station

■ Shoprite on Nesconset Highway in Port Jefferson Station reported a shoplifter on July 24. A man allegedly stole assorted food items valued at $49.

Selden

■ Walgreens on Middle Country Road in Selden called the police on July 20 to report a petit larceny. A man and woman allegedly stole several cases of Modelo beer worth $116.

■ Brothers Grim Games and Collectibles on Middle Country Road in Selden reported a burglary on July 22. Unknown suspects broke a glass door to gain entry and allegedly stole collectible Pokémon cards worth $1,000.

Smithtown

■ Bagel Express on West Main Street in Smithtown was burglarized on July 19. Unknown suspects broke the front glass door to gain entry and stole cash from the register.

■ The Smithtown Senior Center on Middle Country Road in Smithtown called the police on July 22 to report that catalytic converters were stolen from two senior citizen buses in the parking lot.

South Setauket

■ A petit larceny was reported at Target on Pond Path in South Setauket on July 14. A man allegedly loaded assorted health and beauty products valued at approximately $200 into a shopping cart, concealed the items and walked out of the store without paying.

Stony Brook

■ Marshalls on Nesconset Highway in Stony Brook called the police on July 22 report a shoplifter.  A person allegedly stole assorted clothing worth $126. When confronted, the suspect punched a security guard in the face and fled.

■ A resident on Buick Drive in Centereach reported that two unknown men broke the rear car window of his vehicle on June 22 and removed two iPhones valued at $800 and cash.

■ A resident on Anne Drive in Centereach reported a petit larceny on June 22. Three men were observed entered her unlocked vehicle in the driveway and removing cash from a wallet. That same day, a car window on Corvette Road in Centereach was broken and a wallet was stolen.

Commack

■ Marshall’s on Henry Street in Commack reported a petit larceny on June 24. Two men allegedly stole miscellaneous clothing valued at $170.

■ Costco on Garet Place in Commack called the police on June 24 to report a shoplifter. A man allegedly stole a 48” LG television valued at $900.

■ Walmart on Crooked Hill Road reported a shoplifter on June 22. A person allegedly stole various electronics and cleaning supplies valued at $550.

■ Commack Cigar & Vape on Commack Road in Commack was burglarized on June 19. Someone smashed the glass front door and stole various items valued at $2,000.

■ A woman shopping at Trader Joe’s on Jericho Turnpike in Commack on June 25 reported that someone stole her wallet from her pocketbook while it was in a shopping cart.

■ Home Depot on Jericho Turnpike in Commack reported a shoplifter on June 24. A person allegedly stole assorted Milwaukee tools valued at $100.

■ Walmart on Crooked Hill Road in Commack called the police on June 25 to report that two en allegedly stole miscellaneous merchandise valued at $500.

East Setauket

■ Walmart on Nesconset Highway in East Setauket reported a shoplifter on June 21. A man allegedly stole a Sharper Image drone and miscellaneous items valued at $80.

Huntington Station

■ Saks 5th Avenue on Walt Whitman Road in Huntington Station called the police on June 21 to report a grand larceny. A man and a woman allegedly stole Chanel sunglasses valued at $675 and used a sleight of hand to steal money from a cashier.

■ A 2020 Acura MDX was reported stolen from a residence on 3rd Avenue in Huntington Station on June 19. The vehicle was valued at $20,000.

Miller Place

■ A patron of McNulty’s on North Country Road in Miller Place reported that a wallet containing credit cards was stolen from his car parked in the parking lot on June 23. 

■ Sonny’s Cards N’ Things on Route 25A in Miller Place reported a burglary on June 20. Someone smashed the glass front door and allegedly stole cash and lottery tickets.

Port Jefferson

■ A resident on Belle Terre Road in Port Jefferson called the police on June 22 to report that someone broke into their vehicle and stole headphones valued at $50.

Port Jefferson Station

■ A car was reported stolen from the driveway of a resident on Maple Avenue in Port Jefferson Station on June 22. The vehicle, a 2016 Lincoln MKZ, was valued at $18,000.

■ Speedway on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station reported a burglary on June 20. A man allegedly broke the front glass door of the store overnight and stole numerous Newport cigarettes valued at $1100.

■ Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station reported a shoplifter on June 19. A man allegedly concealed food items including crab cakes, octopus salad, shrimp and steak in his jacket, went to the self-checkout, paid for several items but not what was in his jacket before fleeing. The items were valued at approximately $100.

■ A resident on Champlain Street in Port Jefferson Station reported that someone entered their unlocked vehicle parked in the street on June 18 and stole a wallet containing cash and credit cards. A second resident on the same street reported the same crime on June 19.

■ A resident on Peters Lane in Port Jefferson reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle on June 18 and stole Apple AirPods and a wallet.

Rocky Point

■ A resident on Narcissus Road in Rocky Point reported that someone broke the window of her car on June 18 and stole a backpack with a laptop and sports gear.

■ A resident on Broadway in Rocky Point called the police on June 20 to report that someone removed a battery powered ATV Quad Razor valued at $600 from their property.

■ A resident on Rosewood Road in Rocky Point reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle on June 18 and stole Apple iPods, backpack, and a wallet containing credit cards.

■ The rear passenger side window of a vehicle on Magnolia Drive in Rocky Point was reported broken on June 19 and a purse was stolen.

Selden

■ Walgreens on Middle Country Road in Selden reported a petit larceny on June 22. A man and a woman allegedly stole 6 12-packs of Corona beer. The items were valued at approximately $100.

■ Home Depot on Middle Country Road in Selden called the police on June 20 to report a shoplifter. A man allegedly stole copper wire valued at $160.

Smithtown

■ Off-Road N’ Outdoors Power Sports on West Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown reported a burglary on June 25. Two men broke the glass front door of the store and stole a dirt bike valued at $1800 and a locked cash box.

South Setauket

■ Stop & Shop on Pond Path in South Setauket reported a shoplifter on June 18. A man allegedly put $1750 worth of allergy and pain medications in a shopping cart and walked out without paying for the items.

Stony Brook

■ Country House Restaurant on North Country Road in Stony Brook reported a burglary on June 25. Someone broke a window to gain entry but fled when the alarm went off.

Suffolk County Police said they have arrested a man for allegedly burglarizing and trespassing in multiple residences in Coram, Medford, Middle Island and Selden over the past two years.

After an investigation, police said they arrested Tyamie Bell, 41 of Selden. He was charged with two counts of 2nd degree burglary, two counts of 2nd degree criminal trespass and four counts of 3rd degree criminal trespass. 

The man allegedly entered yards or residences in Coram, Medford, Middle Island and Selden between October 2019 and September 2020. Police said twice he was confronted by residents during these interactions.

According to police, he entered a yard on two seperate Cedarhurst Avenue homes in Selden on two dates Sept. 10 and Sept. 14. He had also allegedly entered the home of a person on Woodlawn Avenue in Selden Sept. 12.

Bell was also charged with 2nd degree possession of a forged instrument. He was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Sept. 22.
