Candyland

MEET CANDYLAND!

This week’s featured shelter pet is Candyland, currently up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. This sweet little lady is just 6 months old. Candy was trapped as part of the shelter’s TNR program with the rest of her litter (all named after boardgames). The others have all since gone on to be adopted, but poor Candy is still waiting for the purrfect home.  

This black beauty has some vision impairment; she can see movement and shadows in good lighting, but is very limited in poor lighting and with fine detail. This makes her very untrusting of other animals and young children because they move erratically or sneak up on her. 

She is very playful and affectionate and would love a quiet, adult only home where she can be the only pet or live with pets that will not bother with her. Candy has tons of love to give and she loves to get attention.

Lilly
Lilly

MEET LILLY!

Lilly is a Female Domestic Shorthair at the Smithtown Animal Shelter who is estimated to be around five years-old. Lilly and her housemate were brought to the Animal Shelter after a child in her old home discovered they had an allergy to cats. She is very sweet and affectionate with people, and an absolutely lovely friend to everyone she meets. She has experience living with two other cats and with an older child. Lilly can get along well with some cats, but may assert her dominance over others, and would prefer a home without any dogs.

Ophelia

MEET OPHELIA!

Ophelia is a gorgeous one year-old Female Border Collie Mix who was found during a storm. Ophelia is a sweet and kind girl with a gentle heart. She clearly has had no prior socialization, and this has led to her being very frightened and shy of new people. Despite this, Ophelia desperately craves love and affection from anyone who’s willing to give it. She needs a home that can help her work on her confidence and let her live the active life her breed requires. Ophelia would do well in a home with older children, and will likely get along with other pets.

Sweet Tea

MEET SWEET TEA!

Sweet Tea is a delightful one year-old Female Pit Mix who arrived at the Smithtown Animal Shelter after being found wandering around busy roads and trying to get into passing cars. Her time as a stray left her a little underweight, and there were some signs that she had a recent litter.

After initially being somewhat unsure of herself in her new surroundings, she has shown the shelter staff just how friendly and loving she can be! Sweet Tea is a small ball of energy and an absolute pleasure to be around. She enjoys meeting anyone who will give her some attention, and she responds positively to training. Sweet Tea would do well in a home with older children, and she’ll likely get along with most other dogs that can tolerate her social behavior.

MEET JITTERBUG!

This week’s featured shelter pet is Jitterbug, a white and tan female terrier mix currently up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. 

Approximately three years old, sweet Jitterbug is a Southern Belle who was adopted from Florida and then surrendered to the shelter on Sept. 16 due to a penchant for escape. 

Jitterbug is a social butterfly who loves to meet new people. This young lady is spirited and full of boundless energy. She needs help with some manners, but is otherwise a delightful young girl.

MEET BARBIE!

This week’s featured shelter pet is Barbie, a white and black rabbit currently up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Barbie and her boyfriend Ken were abandoned at Sunken Meadow State Park in the beginning of August.

While the shelter is not set up to house rabbits long term, these two were in a dangerous situation and had to be taken in.  

Ken was adopted right away, but sweet Barbie took a little longer to warm up to shelter staff. Now it’s time for Barbie to find her own dream home. She is a sweet and loving little bun with a love for yogurt treats and Romaine lettuce. She is litter trained and needs a home with space for her to run.

Barbie would do best with older children as she can get quite fresh when she feels scared.

MEET HANNIBAL

This week’s featured shelter pet is Hannibal, also known as Hanni, who is up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

Hanni is a five year-old Male Pit Mix who is bursting with energy. He is fun-loving, social, and very active. He loves to be outside and chase balls, but a future home should keep a close eye on him, as he may try and escape to look for new friends. Some of Hanni’s favorite activities include sunbathing, going for walks, and riding in the car. He has dealt with a few ear infections, as well as some light allergies. Hannibal has lived with other dogs in the past, and should get along with other pets and older children as long as they respect his space. A wonderful guy like Hannibal deserves a loving family, and we know that perfect home is out there somewhere for him.

Nora

This week’s featured shelter pet is Nora, a two-year-old (estimated) torbie (tortoiseshell-tabby) up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. 

This green-eyed stunner was found as a stray and dropped off at the shelter in July. She has been affectionate and outgoing with everyone she has met. Now she is looking for the purrfect home where whe will be loved and cherished forever.

MEET TATER!

This week’s featured shelter pet is Tater, currently up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter, 410 E. Main St., Smithtown. This 5-year-old male tabby was found as part of the shelter’s TNR program in 2018. He was blind from birth and adopted as a kitten. Due to no fault of his own, he was returned to the shelter this July. Sweet, gentle and affectionate, Tater needs a quiet home with lots of love. This week’s featured shelter pet is Alabama, a brown and white tabby cat currently up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. 

Estimated to be around 5 years old, she was found in a vehicle wheel well and was dropped off at the shelter in May. 

This girl is not afraid to demand your attention, and is a ball of constant affection and motion.  She is the cat that does figure 8’s around your ankles and chirps for attention 24/7. She is a gentle and friendly cat that would make anyone lucky.

This beauty has elevated 3rd eyelids that do not require medication and seem to not cause her any issue. She is unsure around other cats as they tend to bully her, but will likely be able to live amicably with feline friends.

This week’s featured shelter pet trio are Hoyt, King Charles and Chanticleer, three roosters up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

The boom in chicken ownership the past few years has created a problem for the males.  Roosters are often a source of complaint for neighbors and prohibited in some areas. When an accidental boy is hatched, they often find themselves kicked out of the flock because placement for roosters is getting increasingly harder to find.

Hoyt, King Charles, and Chanticleer were all abandoned as strays to fend for themselves. Each is a young fellow, with Charles being the oldest at just over a year old. These boys were all found emaciated, dehydrated and weak. They are all now happy and healthy, but are lonely and looking for a flock of their own.

King Charles (formerly Prince Charles) is a handsome rooster who has been at the Animal Shelter for a year. He is docile and easygoing, and seeks out physical closeness with any animal he can find. Charles enjoys eating blueberries and tomatoes.

Chanticleer has been with at the shelter for a short time, and he has shown to be an active guy that is slow to trust people. He has yet to decide what his favorite treats are, though he seems to like tomatoes. Chanticleer can have a spicy attitude, but will learn to be better as he settles in.

Hoyt is the shelter’s newest addition and is proving to be docile and friendly with a love for corn and other animals. Hoyt has some weight to gain, but is making great progress.

All three of them enjoy crowing the day away. They’ve been through a lot in their short lives, and they need a safe and nurturing environment that will help them flourish.

Please note: The Town of Smithtown Animal Shelter is not equipped to safely house animals other than dogs and cats long term. However, if an animal is in danger and needs housing temporarily until another rescue has room, they  will do their best to provide safe shelter while they can. While the animal waits for space to open in another rescue, it will be available for adoption through our Adoption Center.
