Did you hear the news? There’s a new couple in town — Wine & Jazz! Starting May 12, The Jazz Loft will be bringing live jazz music to Madiran The Wine Bar in East Setauket every second Thursday of the month from 7 to 9 p.m.

Titled The Jazz Dispatch Live Music Series at Madiran, the event will feature Steve Salerno on guitar, Tom Manuel on cornet, and a special guest. The monthly series will also feature a rotation of musicians as well as an array of guest artists.

“We are excited about partnering with local business owner Jacqueline Malenda and Madiran to bring live jazz music to this delightful and intimate venue,” said Manuel, the founder of the Jazz Loft. 

“Our Jazz Dispatch Series is our community outreach efforts to get what we do inside the walls of the Jazz Loft out into the community at large. Our desire is to meet people where they’re at, be it restaurants, parks, Jazz clubs, museums, historic buildings, and more,” said Manuel. “We’re excited to be announcing soon two additional Jazz Dispatch events — a new series in Harlem, New York as well as one on Shelter Island.”

“As a lifelong jazz enthusiast, I could not be more thrilled to be partnering with Tom and the Jazz Loft for a great experience at the wine bar!” said Malenda. “What better pairing is there than good wine and pure jazz?”

Stony Brook Village’s Spring Appreciation Day on April 23 was a huge success, drawing thousands to the Stony Brook Village Center for live music by Burke and Brent, a car show, vintage vehicles by the Antique Automobile Club of America, a petting zoo courtesy of Racing Horse Farms, and scavenger hunt by the Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO)’s Youth Corps and tours of the Stony Brook Grist Mill.

Northport Symphony Orchestra

The Northport Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Richard Hyman, has announced that it will resume its presentation of live concerts at Northport High School, 154 Laurel Hill Road, Northport on Friday, April 29 at 8 p.m. The announcement was made in a press release on April 11. The concert will feature guest artist Oda Voltersvik, who will perform the Piano Concerto in A Minor by Edvard Grieg.  The program will also include Symphony No. 6 (the Pastoral), by Ludwig van Beethoven and Song of the Waters by James Cohn.

Oda Voltersvik

Oda Hjertine Voltersvik is a Norwegian concert pianist, regularly performing solo and chamber music recitals in Norway and abroad.  She is a member of the Volt & Potenza duo and a member and project leader of the Volt Ensemble.  Ms. Voltersvik is a first prize winner of the Buono & Bradshaw International Piano Competition in 2017, and has performed worldwide, including such venues as Wigmore Hall, St Martin in the Fields, Carnegie Hall, and the Palermo Classica International Festival.  She holds a Master in Performance Degree from the Royal College of Music and an Artist Diploma from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (with distinction), London.  For 2021 & 2022, she has received the Norwegian Arts Councils grant for younger newly established artists.

“We are eager to present the repertoire of wonderful classical music again and invite you to join us!  These concerts are made possible by ticket sales and by donations from our generous advertisers, donors, and audience members,” read the press release.

In honor of its 70th anniversary, “Singin’ In the Rain” heads to select cinemas nationwide on Sunday, April 10 and Wednesday, April 13, courtesy of Warner Bros. Entertainment, Turner Classic Movies. Starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor, Jean Hagen, Cyd Charisse and Rita Moreno, the 1952 classic musical is still as fresh and delightful as the day it was released.

Musician Don Lockwood (Kelly) rises to stardom during Hollywood’s silent-movie era–paired with the beautiful, jealous and dumb Lina Lamont (Hagen). When Lockwood becomes attracted to young studio singer Kathy Selden (Reynolds), Lamont has her fired. But with the introduction of talking pictures, audiences laugh when they hear Lamont speak for the first time–and the studio uses Selden to dub her voice. Set during the advent of “talkies,” this film’s classic song-and-dance numbers celebrate the beginning of movie musicals.

Written by legendary musical “book” writers Betty Comden and Adolph Green and directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, the film was nominated for two Academy Awards and is the No. 1 musical on the American Film Institute’s (AFI) list of the “25 Greatest Movie Musicals.” 

This 70th anniversary event includes exclusive commentary from Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz.

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame (LIMHoF) it is now accepting applications for their 2022 Student Scholarship and “Educator of Note” programs.

This year, LIMHoF will award four $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music. LIMHoF’s “Educator of Note” program recognizes music teachers and professors in public or private schools, as well as colleges or studios who have demonstrated a commitment to music education. 'The Queen's Cartoonists'

Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts, 100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook welcomes The Queen’s Cartoonists to its Recital Hall on Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m. See projected cartoon classics paired with a tour-de-force of the Swing Era’s zaniest and most creative music, written and or adapted for classic cartoons. Fun for the whole family!

The Queen’s Cartoonists play music from both classic cartoons and contemporary animation. Their performances are synchronized to video projections of the original films, and the band leads the audience through a world of virtuosic musicianship, multi-instrumental mayhem, and comedy. Behind the project is the goal of presenting a concert for everybody – regardless of age, gender, or familiarity with the concert hall.

Tying this diverse concert together are comedic anecdotes involving the cartoons and their composers. The band is on a musical mission of equal parts performance, preservation, and education. Expect the unexpected from the repertoire that includes the Golden Age of animation, cult cartoon classics, modern animation, and elements of a musical circus!

Since their inception in 2015, The Queen’s Cartoonists have brought their unique sound to performing arts centers in over 20 states, and have opened for the New York Philharmonic. The 6 members, all currently living in Queens, New York, are world-class professional musicians. The band has been featured in numerous major publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune, Mashable, and on NPR.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School student-musician Katherine Ranjbar recently performed at Carnegie Hall as part of its grand prize concerto competition. A sophomore, Katherine performed at New York’s famed venue on solo piano. 

“Congratulations to Katherine on her outstanding musical achievement,” said Port Jefferson School District Director of Music and Fine Arts Dr. Michael Caravello.

In-person student musical performances are back, and Port Jefferson School District students represented at the recent Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association All-County Festival held at Ward Melville High School.

In the fifth and sixth grade Division I, students Josie Amtmann, Jenny Cheung, Isabella Fratticci Cseri, Nina Gnatenko, Kai Gronenthal, Ruairi Hogan, Patrick Hutchinson, Nila Manian, Austin Nam, Adyson Nocito, Clara Pearce, Violet Pryor, Sara Puopolo, Aiden Fraticci Rodriguez, Sebastian Salzman, Dylan Sproul, Kaho Sugimoto, Leilani Von Oiste and Elizabeth Yin were selected. Seventh and eighth graders Rowan Casey, Crystal Reustle, Sadie Salzman and Daria Zakharova were selected for Division II, and Division III’s ninth and 10th graders welcomed Earl L. Vandermeulen High School student Andi Kelly.

“Congratulations to all of our outstanding student musicians who were fortunate to perform in the FIRST in-person county music festival in nearly three years!” said Dr. Michael Caravello, district director of music and fine arts.

The Jazz Loft founder and president Tom Manuel recently met with New York State Senator Mario Mattera (District 2) to give the Senator a tour of the Stony Brook Village museum and performance space and to discuss some of the Loft’s musical programs. 

Members of the local business community, Jazz Loft board members and volunteers were also present. Manuel spoke about The Jazz Loft’s Young at Heart daytime concert series which is aimed at seniors, those suffering from memory loss, and their caretakers. The one-hour programs are designed to be interactive and provide a musical trip down memory lane for audience members. Live music was provided by Steve Salerno.
