The Asian American Association of Greater Stony Brook and the Town of Broohaven AANHPI Advisory Board will host an art exhibit celebrating the Year of the Tiger and the Lunar New Year at the Setauket Neighborhood House, 95 Main Street, Setauket on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Over 50 pieces will be displayed in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media and will touch on the theme of the Lunar New Year and/or the Year of the Tiger.

Awards will be given in three groups: pre-k to 6th grade, 7th to 12th grad and adult. The top three winners will be awarded a $50 Amazon gift card and award certificates.

The Art League of Long Island’s 15th annual “Go APE” Advanced Placement Student Exhibition features 2-D and 3-D works by 135 AP and IB Art Students from 42 Long Island High Schools.  High School art teachers selected artworks from among their talented students for exhibition in the spacious Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. The exhibit is on view in the Art League of Long Island’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery January 29 through February 12.

With its many beaches, parks, lakes and farmland, it’s easy to see that Long Island is full of natural beauty. For the local art community, the variety of landscapes provide a constant source of inspiration.

Of course, nature is always changing, but not only with the seasons. Global warming continues to affect all of us, driving home the message that nothing is guaranteed and that we must work together to protect our world.

The Smithtown Township Arts Council (STAC) is reflecting on climate change and the environment through an extended series of exhibits at the Mills Pond Gallery in St. James that began this past fall. Their next exhibit, Long Island Landscapes: From Awe to Action, invites viewers to appreciate the beauty of this area while considering what they might do to preserve it. The show opens Feb. 5.

“I like to do a local, landscape-based exhibit each year, and I wanted to see if there was a way to connect it to the theme of climate change,” said Allison Cruz, executive director at the Mills Pond Gallery. “Art is a method of communication, a way to help people see things and make connections in new ways. We can read the newspaper or watch the news to see that the ice caps are melting and the world is heating up, but to see these artistic expressions of our area makes you realize we might not have them forever.”

The exhibit features 60 works from 53 Long Island artists. A variety of styles and mediums will be on display, including acrylic, watercolor, oil, graphite and charcoal.

Each artist also took time to reflect on what the natural world and environmental conservation means to them.

Anita Simmons of Commack finds her inspiration while going for a drive, walking through area parks or spending the day at the beach. A retired accountant and the daughter of an avid gardener, Simmons grew up next to sprawling fields of corn and potatoes — crops that are no longer as common on Long Island.

“My paintings are an emotional response to what can be seen in the natural landscape of Long Island, which I have enjoyed all my life,” she said. “My dad would plant morning glories that grew up our chimney every year, and I have always loved them. When I saw the morning glories at Schneider Farm in Melville, I just had to photograph them to paint later.”

Ellen Ferrigno often paints scenes very close to her home in Port Jefferson. Protecting the environment has been a part of her life for many years, and she eventually became a Cornell Cooperative Master Gardener to increase her own understanding and educate others about the natural world.

“What supports nature’s environment is a community as well as individual efforts. Therefore, I paint these scenes as reminders of what nature’s beauty is,” she explained. “During the early part of the pandemic, I researched and painted the plants in my gardens that attract beneficial insects, provide a soothing tea or feed the birds. I often included a narrative to educate the art viewers. I also found myself increasing my gardens, putting out feeders for the birds and attracting the bees.”

Cruz and STAC have partnered with a number of local environmental organizations to provide information, literature and ways for visitors to support their cause. They include The Nature Conservancy, Defend H2O, Save the Sound, The Sierra Club, Higher Ground, The Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island, the Seatuck Environmental Association, Save the Great South Bay, Long Island Water, and Group for the East End.

“We have so many wonderful locally-focused groups that work hard every day to protect and preserve our environment here,” said Cruz. “This isn’t just about appreciating beautiful art — we also want to bring attention to all the good these groups are doing and encourage visitors to get involved.”

Nationally renowned, Long Island-born artist celebrated close to home

From Jan. 20 to April 24, the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington will feature the work of artist Richard Mayhew (b. 1924) in a solo exhibition, the first ever organized so close to Amityville, where the renowned artist grew up. 

Titled Richard Mayhew: Reinventing Landscape, the exhibit will highlight more than two dozen vibrant paintings and works on paper created by the artist over the past six decades and will explore how Mayhew reimagined nineteenth and twentieth-century American landscape painting through a uniquely personal style that expresses his perspectives about African American and Native American history and culture.

The show is drawn from private collections and institutions such as Hudson River Museum, National Academy of Design, and the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African-American Art. 

Coinciding with the exhibition, The Heckscher Museum announces the acquisition of one of Mayhew’s vivid paintings, Pescadero, 2014. The Museum already holds a number of Mayhew’s lithographs. 

“The purchase of Richard Mayhew’s Pescadero is an important springboard into the Museum’s second century,” said curator Karli Wurzelbacher. “We are honored to have the opportunity to share the stunning and thoughtful work of this major artist with our audiences, both now and in the decades to come. Mayhew’s work will allow us to tell a more complete and compelling story about the histories of abstraction and landscape painting in America.”

Richard Mayhew’s paintings express his African American and Native American heritage. “It’s a dual commitment to nature. The land is very important to both cultures, in terms of stimulation and spiritual sensitivity, and it’s very important to me,” he said. The Heckscher Museum, located less than 15 miles from the artist’s birthplace, will introduce people from Long Island and the greater New York metropolitan region to Mayhew’s art within the context of Long Island’s diverse cultural history.

Wurzelbacher notes that the artist’s subjects may suggest the appearance of natural forms, but they are symbolic only of his emotional interpretation. He conceives his painting as “mindscapes.” Mayhew intuitively uses evocative color and diffused form to explore, in his words, “desire, ambition, love, hate, fear—that’s my painting.”

Although Mayhew has resided in other parts of the country (currently in Santa Cruz, CA), his place of birth remains at the center of his work. Here, his love of nature and artistic talents were first stimulated. He took from the Long Island landscape a life-long response to the spiritual essences of nature and delved into complex emotions that permeate his canvases. 

Richard Mayhew grew up in Amityville, on Long Island’s South Shore. It is among the oldest Black-Indigenous communities on Long Island.

During the 1930s and 40s, artists visited the area in the summertime to paint en plein air along the ocean coastline, and the young Mayhew would watch them: “I was fascinated by the artists dipping their brushes into the paint like a magic wand; the beautiful images that came out on the end of it were amazing.”

Following military service in the South Pacific, Mayhew spent time as an illustrator, ceramic painter, and a jazz singer. In 1951, he began courses at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art. A degree in art history from Columbia University added to his framework of artistic reference. Studies in Europe fostered deeper appreciation of the old masters and for the Impressionists’ mastery of light. 

Mayhew’s first solo exhibition was organized by the Brooklyn Museum. During the Civil Rights movement, he joined Spiral, formed in 1963 by a group of Black artists who met to discuss the relationships between Black identity, American culture, and politics. These debates solidified his commitment to working in an abstract style while also engaging with concepts of race and social justice.

Two person show explores color and chance through sculpture and abstract painting

Kicking off 2022, Gallery North explores the beauty born of controlled chaos and how that informs the power, impact, and usage of color through the raku sculptures of Gina Mars of Huntington and the abstract oil paintings of Ellen Hallie Schiff of Glen Cove in an exciting exhibit titled Chroma-Tenacity. The show opens Jan. 13.

Although Mars has a long-standing relationship with Gallery North, it is Schiff’s first exhibition at the gallery, and the pairing provides a unique opportunity for the artists to showcase their work in a way rarely seen, according to Executive Director Ned Puchner. The mixed media display, featuring approximately 53 pieces, was a calculated departure from the gallery’s standard procedure. 

“I am excited to see 3-dimensional work shown at the same time as 2-dimensional work. Often, we segment those things: the former in the gift shop, the latter in the gallery. I love the interplay between 3-D and 2-D; it’s important to me,” he said. 

Despite their different modes of expression, Mars and Schiff’s work shares certain commonalities that are interwoven into overall continuity and themes of Chroma-Tenacity.

“It really has to do with them trying to experiment and stay driven towards the goal of creating something beautiful that contains chaos. The exhaustion that comes with uncertainty runs through how we live right now and also this work,” said Puchner. 

This notion of tranquility in turbulence and meaning in mayhem are continuous themes of Mars and Schiff’s art, from concept to creation, reflected in the process and the final product.

“Control and chance are elements in both of their work. Both artists focus on the importance of color, attention to detail, and creating refined pieces. Gina’s sculptures focus on understanding the chemistry that exists within the glazes and surface texture, yet allowing them to have this spontaneous reaction. Ellen’s work involves destroying things to build them back up,” said curator Kate Schwarting.

Mars primarily works in raku, a sculptural style that involves rapidly firing pottery or sculpture. Her decorative and functional pottery is removed from the kiln at 2000 degrees and put in a covered container with combustibles (Mars likes to use pine needles and newspaper). The smoke interacts with the glaze and creates all different colors. 

Mars makes her own glazes, either color or crackle, which is a white glaze that, upon being taken out of kiln, shrinks in the air causing cracks. When the sculpture is put into the bin, the smoke gets into the cracks and makes incredible hues. 

Her pottery features iridescent glazed bodies and crackle glazed lids.  

“I love to go bold with my work and with color, push the limits of creativity, mixing different mediums. I may use different kinds of glaze firings, or different kinds of materials,” said Mars. “I like to take a lot of risks and [create] the vision that I see in my head; I don’t let anything influence me but my own ideas.”

Schiff is also open to the experience of creation informing her art, rather than adhering to a preconceived plan. Her work captures not only what is there but what is left behind as she applies layers of paint and then scrapes them away to form her works. 

While experimenting with different markings, Schiff has sought to expand her color palette in the past year. 

“I am interested in exploring. I try to really be open to what is happening on the canvas, what may occur, what I may explore with. I am intentional but I am also open to what may happen. I’m starting with the paint, I’m not starting with a narrative. Narrative may develop from putting the paint on the canvas. My work is about color and intention,” she explained. 

This shared willingness to play around with colors, tones, and forms is what first drew Schwarting to assembling this joint exhibition. 

“Gina started branching out in the past year [with] new motifs, materials, and experimenting with her process. I was really drawn to the sculptural elements and the dark surfaces that become luminous. Ellen’s art also evolved — it got brighter. The attention to texture and color is what really stood out to me: earthy, weathered, worn, but with incandescent color. Gina’s art has a very similar feeling to what Ellen has in her paintings. The breadth, range, and simultaneous cohesion of this exhibition make it a truly unique experience and one we are excited to share.”

Exhibition-related programming will include an ArTalk on Location, featuring both artists, to be published on YouTube on Feb. 3 and a one-day pottery workshop with Gina Mars in the Studio on Feb. 4 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Art League of Long Island 65th Annual Members’ Exhibition invites current Art League members ages 18 and up to submit their entry for display in the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery February through April 2022. The entry deadline is February 7, 2022.

Artists from all walks of life, those just beginning their journey into the visual arts and established exhibiting artists, will put their best foot forward exhibiting their artwork in mediums such as painting, drawing, collage, photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, fiber arts, glass art, wood, graphic art, and more.  Due to the large number of works, the exhibit is shown in two parts. Part One (artist last names A-L) exhibits February 19 through March 11 and Part Two (artist last names M-Z) exhibits March 19 through April 8.  Artists’ receptions and awards presentations are scheduled for Saturday, February 26 and Saturday, March 26 respectively, with time periods to be determined.

All member entries will be exhibited, subject to guidelines outlined in the prospectus posted at www.artleagueli.org/65th-annual-members-exhibition .  Awards of excellence and honorable mentions of the art on display will be selected by guest juror Mary Cantone, owner-curator of the William Ris Gallery in Jamesport, NY. Smithtown Township Arts Council has announced that the works of Nesconset artist Catherine Rezin will be on view at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown from December 20 to February 17, 2022. The  exhibition, part of STAC’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular banking hours, Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nesconset artist Catherine Rezin is a retired textile artist who has renewed her love of painting and drawing during the past four years. “In the early months of the Covid restrictions, I found myself doing pastel portraits of our grandchildren and then other family members. The next progression was to painting watercolor landscapes,” she said.

Inspired by the beauty of nature, Rezin never seems to run out of sources of inspiration living on Long Island. “I am in awe of the spectacular surroundings that are around me at all times and am passionate in my desire to convey these images to art.” The artist can be commissioned to do portraits of loved ones or capture and convert a favorite vacation photo to a custom artwork.

“STAC is grateful to Apple Bank for its continued support of culture in our communities. We are so happy to feature the talents of Long Island artists in this space!,” said the Council.

The Art League of Long Island’s biennial exhibition opened in the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery on December 4, 2021 and is on view through January 21, 2022.

In this juried exhibition open to artists from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, and Queens, 164 artists submitted 489 works, out of which Exhibition Juror Joshua Ruff selected 60 works to be accepted in this exhibit. Of the 60 artists, Mr. Ruff singled out six artists for awards in the following categories:

Awards of Excellence: Lorina Capitulo, “Out of Sight, Out of Mind”, watercolor, pen & ink; Lori Horowitz, “Amongst the Lilies”, mixed-media relief; David Peikon, “Trout Stream”, oil painting.

About the Juror: Joshua Ruff is the Deputy Director and Director of Collections & Interpretation at the Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages, in Stony Brook, NY. Mr. Ruff is a graduate of Syracuse University (BAs in Broadcast Journalism and also in History) and Stony Brook University (MA in History). He has worked at the Long Island Museum for 24 years in a variety of positions, including as Curator of its History and Carriage Collections. He was also Senior Lecturer in History at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, NY for 20 years. He has served as an editor of the Long Island History Journal since 2009. Mr. Ruff has curated more than 60 exhibitions, including, most recently, Fire & Form: New Directions in Glass (2021) and Perfect Harmony: The Musical Life and Art of William Sidney Mount (2019), which traveled to the Fenimore Art Museum, in Cooperstown, NY. In addition to co-authoring several books and exhibition catalogs, he has articles in publications that include Magazine Antiques; American Art Review; American History magazine; and the Long Island History Journal.
