“Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” So begins Theatre Three’s latest offering, Ring of Fire: The Johnny Cash Musical Show, a fitting tribute to the life and music of the Man in Black. The show opened to a full house last  Saturday night and did not disappoint. 

Created by Richard Maltby, Jr. and conceived by William Meade, with orchestrations by Steven Bishop and Jeff Lisenby, the musical opened on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in 2006 for a limited run before heading to community theaters. 

Expertly directed by Christine Boehm, the show at Theatre Three features over 30 of Cash’s most popular songs including Jackson, Ring of Fire, If I Were a Carpenter, Get Rhythm, and I Walk the Line, sung in quick succession over two hours by an incredibly talented cast — Tina Ann Aurora, Kyle M. Breitenbach, Jeffrey Hoffman, Michael Mandato, Cassidy Rose O’Brien, Dan Schindlar and Ryan Van Nostrand — as the singer’s story is told.

One of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide, Cash drew inspiration from his life experiences and embraced country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel, earning him the rare honor of being inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame.

Born in Kingsland, Arkansas in 1932, Johnny Cash was the fourth child of Carrie and Ray Cash. As the show progresses, we learn that he and his six siblings worked alongside their parents picking cotton on their farm. Tragedy strikes when his older brother Jack dies after been injured at work, an event that deeply affected Cash for the rest of his life.

We witness the first time the singer meets June Carter at the Grand Ole Opry and is instantly smitten. Several stints in jail inspire a series of “prison” songs including Folsom Prison Blues and Orleans Parish Prison and his struggles with drugs spur him to write Cocaine Blues.

Every song is executed beautifully and with gusto and each actor has a chance to shine, taking turns to sing the lead. Highlights include Breitenbach’s version of Delia’s Gone, Van Nostrand’s hilarious rendition of Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart and Man in Black by Mandato.

Special mention must be made of Schindlar’s A Boy Named Sue which tells the story of a young man’s quest for revenge on his father for naming him Sue before abandoning him. During the performance, Schindlar comes down from the stage to look for his “father” in the audience. A nice touch. 

As with any production, it takes a village to make it all come together perfectly.

While each cast member plays multiple instruments including guitar, violin, ukulele, piano, tambourine and flute, they are accompanied on stage by a backup band featuring Marni Harris on fiddle, John Dericco on guitar and mandolin, Dave Grudzinski and Ethan Mascarenas on bass and Don Larsen on drums.

The costumes, designed by Boehm, feature modest and demure country dresses, jeans and overalls in Act I but switch to sparkly and shiny new digs in Act II to reflect the progression of Cash’s career. Even the boots glitter! 

The impressive set, designed by Randall Parsons, resembles the inside of a barn with hints of the Grand Ole Opry. Each side of the stage features a lighted porch for seating and stained glass windows illuminate the background.

Don’t miss this wonderful show. You’ll be clapping along and tapping your feet and going home with a deeper appreciation of the legendary singer/songwriter and his impact on the world of music. The standing ovation at the end of the opening performance was most deserved.

Irish Beef and Beer Pot Pie

Everyone has corned beef and cabbage on the brain come St. Patrick’s Day. But these other flavorful dishes might appeal to a greater number of people with Irish roots.

Shepherd’s Pie is a savory dish made of minced lamb that originated in England but also made the jump to Ireland, where it became a popular comfort food. While Shepherd’s Pie can be made with freshly cooked ground meat, it also is a fine way to use leftovers from a previous meal. 

Many families have their own ancestral recipes for Shepherd’s Pie, but for those looking to cook the dish for the first time, try the recipe below, courtesy of Alton Brown, which appeared in Season 12 of his hit show “Good Eats.”

A hearty home-cooked meal loaded with flavor and sure to fill you with cheer, Irish Beef and Beer Pot Pie is made piping hot to warm up any St. Patrick’s Day party.  Full of hashbrowns, carrots, peas and beef, it’s a twist on tradition served with puff pastry topping the tasty stew. A cup of your favorite stout beer, of course, will come in handy for deglazing the skillet to ensure you enjoy every bit of beefy flavor.

YIELD: Makes 8 servings

INGREDIENTS:  

1 1⁄2 pounds russet potatoes

2 tablespoons canola oil

1 cup chopped onion

2 carrots, peeled and finely diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 1⁄2 pounds ground lamb

1 3⁄4 teaspoons kosher salt

3⁄4 teaspoon black pepper

2 teaspoons tomato paste

1 cup chicken broth

2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary

1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1⁄4 cup half-and-half

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 large egg yolk

1⁄2 cup corn kernels, fresh or frozen

1⁄2 cup English peas, fresh or frozen

DIRECTIONS:

Heat oven to 400 F. Peel the potatoes and cut them into 1⁄2-inch dice. Put them in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Set over high heat, cover and bring to a boil. Uncover, drop the heat to maintain a simmer, and cook until tender, 10 to 15 minutes.

Heat the oil in an 11-inch saute pan over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the onion and carrots and saute just until they begin to take on color, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the garlic and stir to combine. Add the meat, salt and pepper, and cook until browned and cooked through, approximately 3 minutes. Sprinkle the meat with the flour, toss to coat, and continue to cook for another minute. Add the tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, and thyme and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, then decrease the heat to low, cover, and simmer slowly until the sauce is thickened slightly, 10 to 12 minutes.

Meanwhile, combine the half-and-half and butter in a microwave-safe container and nuke until warmed through, about 35 seconds. Drain the potatoes and return them to the saucepan. Mash the potatoes (a masher is an excellent tool for this, though a hand mixer will do), then add the hot half-and-half mixture, as well as the salt and pepper. Mash to smoothness, then stir in the egg yolk.

Add the corn and peas to the meat mixture and spread evenly in an 11 by 7-inch glass baking dish. Top with the mashed potatoes, starting around the edges to create a seal to prevent the mixture from bubbling over, and smooth the top with a rubber spatula. Place on a half sheet pan lined with parchment paper on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 25 minutes, or just until the potatoes begin to brown. Remove to a cooking rack and let rest for at least 15 minutes before serving.

YIELD: Makes 4 servings

INGREDIENTS: 

1 pound ground beef

1 cup stout beer

3 tablespoons flour

1 can tomato puree 15 ounces

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon garlic powder

1 cup beef broth

1 bag hashbrowns with peppers and onions 28 ounces

1 can carrots 14 ounces, drained

1 can peas 14 ounces, drained

salt to taste

pepper to taste

1 sheet puff pastry thawed

1 egg

DIRECTIONS:
Heat oven to 400 F. In large skillet or Dutch oven, brown ground beef; drain and set aside. Over medium heat, deglaze skillet with beer and whisk in flour. After thickening, whisk in tomato puree and add Worcestershire sauce. Mix in ground beef, garlic powder and beef broth. Add hashbrowns, carrots and peas. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Simmer 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Place puff pastry sheet on cookie sheet. Beat egg and brush over pastry. Bake 10 minutes. Place hot puff pastry on top of beef mixture and serve.

Throughout her five-year career as a Commack Cougar basketball star, Sofia Vasselman will tell you that her life has been filled with a bounty of Mudita.

One of the most prominent tenets of Vasselman’s life is based upon the ancient Sanskrit concept of finding joy in the success of others called Mudita. With her 1,000-point high school career speeding toward its final chapter, getting the opportunity to step on the court Thursday, Feb. 27,  in the Suffolk quarterfinals against Huntington brought pure joy and contentment for everyone inside the Commack Varsity Basketball program.

“What the Commack girls basketball team has given me is really indescribable,” said the Geneseo-bound and two-time league MVP Vasselman in an interview after the game.  “The relationships and bonds I have made playing this sport is incomparable because this team and school are my family.”

Vasselman, who was fourth in scoring in Suffolk County this year and averaged nearly 20 points a game, was initially suspended for this playoff game by a Section XI rule that states a player who commits two intentional fouls in the same game will be ejected and ineligible for the team’s next contest. Vasselman was called for two intentional fouls in Commack’s regular season finale against Bay Shore on Feb 7. She would not be allowed to play for the fourth-seeded Cougars in the quarterfinal game against Huntington.

She sought a restraining order to overturn the suspension.

Vasselman’s case became the third in a spate of high-profile high school athletic court cases this month in Suffolk County. Two weeks earlier, six Northport wrestlers were suspended from the postseason for a rules violation but were reinstated; and legendary long-distance runner Zariel Macchia from Longwood was also ruled ineligible from New York State competition because she competed against college athletes earlier in the year. Macchia will not participate in the state tournaments but will be eligible to run for the Lions in the spring.

Vasselman won her case and the Cougar Mudita had been restored. The Commack community that she loves was behind her every step of the way, and Vasselman wanted them to know that she gives it right back.

“The community’s support during this time is something I will never forget and I really do appreciate from the bottom of my heart,” said Vasselman. “This is the main reason I love Commack basketball and the fans and the great people that come with it.”

Her teammates’ support never wavered.

“Sofia is an amazing player and captain,” said junior forward Gianna Solch. “She is an unbelievable leader for this team and she pushes everyone else around her to be their best selves. Over the years, she has helped me to develop more confidence in myself and my game and helped me to build new friendships that have made the girls on this team my best friends. She is a true leader, a wonderful friend, and someone who has made a huge impact on my life. When she was cleared to play, I was so, so happy for her and the team.”

With a victory in the courthouse and the team Namaste whole again, it was time to chase another win on the court. But the upstart Huntington Blue Devils stood in their way.

In the moments before tipoff, the support Vasselman felt transformed into a deafening din of noise and anticipation. The Commack High School gym, which is one of the most acoustically intense arenas on Long Island, was ready to have its roof blown off.

Half of this noise came from Huntington’s cheering section, which made it clear that they had very little love in their collective heart for Vasselman, going decibel for decibel with the hometown Cougar crowd. First-year Huntington coach Perry Marinelli and his fifth-seeded Lady Blue Devils had a plan of attack for Vasselman.

“Sofia is a great player,” said Marinelli. “So we threw a bunch of different defenders and looked at her to try to keep her off balance.”

This seemed to work.

Vasselman hit an early layup, but from there, Huntington’s defense smothered her. Rotating double teams, they denied her the ball, forcing her to the perimeter and choking off any clear path to the rim. She was held to just six points in the first half on two for 11 from the field and zero for five from the three-point range. Huntington junior guard Jolie Weinschreider was one of several defensive attack dogs assigned to keep Vasselman away from the hoop.

“Playing Sofia is tough,” said Weinschreider. “They were setting picks for her, which I had to constantly get around. I watched her hips while face guarding, which helped me significantly and I stayed low so I wouldn’t be faked out by all her moves. When she got the ball, we knew to double-team her and shift our defense.” 

Huntington took a 16-11 lead into halftime. Junior guard Sabrina Boyle scored the first five points of the game, getting the all-blue Huntington cheering section out of their seats and into a full-throated roar that lasted the entire first half.

“It seems like our whole school came out for this one,” said Boyle who finished with 11 points. “The atmosphere in here was really electric and I think that really helped our team.”

In the second half, both offenses peaked out slightly from their shells. Huntington sophomore point guard Ava McDonald hit a lefty layup to push the Devil lead to seven; however, Commack junior forward Mia McBrien scored five consecutive points at the start of the third period that spearheaded a 12-2 run by the Cougars. After a made free throw by Vasselman, they led 23-20 with 1:18 left in the quarter and Marinelli took a timeout. Chants of “Let’s Go Commack” reverberated across Scholar Lane and could be heard up and down Indian Head Road.

When Commack senior guard Liliana Pettit hit a three-pointer from the wing, it gave her team a 26-21 lead, as the building shook with delight. But it would soon go suddenly silent.

McDonald, the underclassman floor general for Huntington hit on a driving layup to close out the scoring of this suddenly explosive third quarter, but when she came down, she rolled on the floor in pain, clutching her right leg. Marinelli and the Huntington training staff raced out to tend to McDonald, who was helped off the court several minutes later to polite applause. A mood shift was palpable in the arena as it appeared McDonald’s day was done.

With a big wrap around her thigh, McDonald re-entered with a little over five minutes remaining in the game and immediately made a deft pass to fellow sophomore Madyn Kalb for an easy layup to make the score 29-27.

“There was no way I wasn’t coming back in this game,” said McDonald. “I told Coach Marinelli that even if I play on one leg, I want to go back in. Make me a fake hamstring if you have to.”

She made a steal of the ensuing inbound and hit Kalb again for a breakaway layup to tie the score. This one was going down to the wire.

Boyle made a steal with Commack up one, sprinted coast-to-coast, and flipped the lead back to Huntington with 2:30 left. Solch hit a jumper for Commack for the 10th lead change of the game as this battle of punch-counterpunch continued deep into the final quarter.

However, Huntington would deliver the final two haymakers — one on offense, one on defense. With McDonald out of the game again, having her bandages redressed, Weinschreider inbounded to senior Lauren Donaghy in the corner. Falling off balance and nearly out of bounds, Donaghy buried a three to give Huntington a 38-36 lead with 1:25 left.

“I hadn’t taken a lot of threes all game and when it left my hand, I didn’t think it was going in,” Donaghy, who led all scorers with 13, said. “It changed my momentum and I think it changed the momentum of the game.”

Vasselman, who led the Cougars to the county finals last year against Walt Whitman, had 85 seconds to swing the mojo back. She pulled down a rebound and hit Solch with a perfect, three-quarter court dime, but Solch missed the layup that would have tied the score. 

Weinschreider sank one of two free throws, pushing Huntington’s lead to three with 21 seconds left. Vasselman, who only had one game in the regular season when she failed to hit at least one three-pointer, was zero for eight from long distance up to this point. Guarded both by Kalb and Boyle, Vasselman hoisted up a three-point attempt right in front of the Commack bench. It was an air ball. The loose ball was gathered up by 5-foot-7 Pettit, who had her shot from the corner blocked by the 5-foot-2, one-legged McDonald. The ball deflected into the front row of the now-celebratory Huntington cheering section. The McDonald block was the exclamation point on this game. The final score was 42-38.

“I don’t block a lot of shots, but after getting injured, I just tried to keep my composure and do anything I could to win this game,” McDonald said.

“Ava is a captain as a sophomore, an emotional leader, and a huge part of what we do on both ends of the floor,” said Marinelli. “When she went down, I knew the girls would rally around her and step up. I was thrilled with how every one of our girls responded and kept their composure. We talked all week about focusing only on what we can control. This game is what high school sports are all about and this win felt great.”

For Vasselman, not so much, but she sees the bigger joy of being a Cougar, her Mudita undisturbed despite the heartbreaking loss in what is to be her game as a high school player.

“My goal at Commack was to leave my legacy and that’s what I feel I have done,” said Vasselman who finished with 12 points in her final game. “I will miss being a part of this team forever and I hope that I have shown the younger players what it means to be on this team and how special it really is. Coaches Moran, DelliSanti and Whitaker helped me become a player and a person who wants to reach the best of my ability and I will always be thankful for them.”

Huntington faced top-seeded Brentwood in the semifinals on Wednesday, March 5, at Comsewogue High School. Results were unavailable at press time.

Whether or not your ancestors hail from the Emerald Isle, everyone is guaranteed to enjoy a family-friendly (and dog-friendly) St. Patrick’s Day parade. While Kings Park held its parade last week, there are still plenty of celebrations to attend on the North Shore. And don’t forget to wear shamrock green!

Center Moriches

Center Moriches’ 21st annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place in Center Moriches on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. The parade begins on Lake Avenue and ends at Railroad Avenue. This year’s Grand Marshal is Mark Danowski. For more information, visit www.moricheschamber.org. 

Farmingdale

Huntington

The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) invites the community to its 91st annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Huntington on Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. Grand Marshal New York State Assemblyman Keith P. Brown will lead the procession down New York Avenue to Main Street before ending at The Church of St. Patrick. Long Island’s oldest and largest, the parade will feature dozens of pipe bands. Miller Place-Rocky Point

Sugar kelp farming is a win-win 

Suffolk County has a unique opportunity to lead in sustainable aquaculture by adding seaweed farming to its existing lease program. Seaweed cultivation offers immense environmental and economic benefits, including improved water quality, carbon sequestration, and the development of innovative industries such as sustainable plastics, animal feed, and biodegradable materials.

Non-profit organizations like Lazy Point Farms and its partners have demonstrated their commitment to supporting this industry through research, infrastructure development, and community education. The Town of Brookhaven is committed to collaborating with organizations like this to build sustainable practices, and we have a chance to help pioneer a robust model for providing critical resources to local growers. This initiative will not only create new economic opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs but also help New York catch up with neighboring states already thriving in seaweed production. 

The opportunity is clear: there have been numerous inquiries from businesses for our locally grown seaweed, but not nearly enough supply to meet that demand. Seaweed production is truly a win-win, because as it generates revenue, it also helps drive the development of sustainable products and helps improve water quality in our bays and harbors. 

Concerns about potential conflicts with boating and visual impact are addressed by the seasonal nature of kelp farming, which occurs outside peak boating months. Additionally, kelp farms enhance marine life and mitigate harmful algae blooms, benefiting all who rely on our waters.

By supporting this initiative, we can position Suffolk County and the Town of Brookhaven as leaders in sustainable aquaculture: creating jobs, protecting our waters, and strengthening our local economy. Every month it seems that the world is becoming more unsettled and divisive. No matter what one’s political affiliation, all of us would agree that there is waste and mismanagement within the federal government. It is very troubling.

However, it doesn’t help that all kinds of accusations are being made about theft, fraud and mismanagement and very little is substantiated with legitimate proof. Dedicated public servants with impeccable records, some with spouses and children, are being fired without real notice. We can and should do better.

Attempting to freeze federal grants that benefit the poor, the needy, those battling mental health issues and our veterans, honestly is unconscionable and heartless.

For more than 40 years, I have refused to take federal money because I worried that one day I would have to face what my colleagues and the nonprofit world are facing. The anxiety and unconscious stress that so many are feeling right now is so unnecessary.

The work that the not-for-profit community does in our local community and in our county is beyond words. The countless lives saved and transformed could fill pages upon pages of any newspaper if their stories were told.

As an educator, what is equally troubling is how we cannot have transparent, critically thought out conversations about the real issues that concern all of us. It seems sometimes that the people we elect leave their heart and soul at the steps of the Capitol. We have elected a senator and a Congress person to represent us, not to mindlessly repeat what the party leadership speaks.

The next generation is watching us and what we are showing them from the classroom to the workplace. 

We are so blessed to live in one of the greatest countries in the world. We are a melting pot of every race, creed, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation and social status. Every American has a voice that must be heard. We must not be afraid to express ourselves, especially if it goes against our leadership. That’s the beauty of our nation. Every voice, no matter who’s speaking, is important and must be respected. 

Americans should never be afraid of reprisal for expressing respectfully what they feel and what they think.

When are our elected representatives going to represent us and what we feel is important? When are we going to elect representatives that lead and not follow?

Isn’t that what democracy is all about?

Medicaid funds the care of most long-term nursing home residents in New York. However, nursing homes are currently reimbursed at only 50% of the actual cost of care, leading to staffing shortages, safety concerns, facility closures, overcrowding, and inadequate care for elderly and vulnerable residents. With a $1.6 billion funding gap, nursing homes across the state are struggling to provide the quality care that our loved ones deserve.

“Advocacy makes a difference. Elected officials rely on constituent feedback when making budget decisions,” said Jennifer Cona, Founder and Managing Partner, Cona Elder Law. “Direct outreach is the most effective way to influence policy and protect our aging population.”

This week’s featured shelter pet is Igor, a black, domestic short-haired male cat up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

Approximately seven years old, this enchanting boy arrived at shelter as part of the Town’s Trap, Neuter, Release program (TNR). Sadly, he was found covered in scars, which reveal what an incredibly rough and heartbreaking life he lived on the streets. Despite his hardships, Igor remains sweet and gentle, with a heart full of love just waiting to be embraced by a special human companion who can bring him joy and happiness.

While Igor takes some time to trust people and is a little shy when meeting new faces, he is loving and affectionate with his caretakers. Once you meet Igor, he’ll happily spend endless hours by your side, soaking up all the love and affection you have to offer. He is an endearing fella who will effortlessly pull on your heartstrings by purring through every stroke, pet and snuggle one lucky family can dish out, making up for years of neglect during his time living on the streets. Igor deserves his happily ever after and will make a wonderful addition to an adoring family’s heart and home.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter believes Igor would do best in a quiet home. However, a home with older children, calm dogs, and possibly cats would be okay as well.

All of the felines at the Shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board certified veterinarian.

Two people allegedly stole merchandise from Target, located at 265 Pond Path, on December 28 at

Despite their importance in making a turkey sandwich, a clarinet, and an adorable puppy wagging its tail possible, quarks and gluons don’t figure into the realm of subjects discussed at water coolers, which, incidentally, also depend on the interaction between these subatomic particles.

Ejiro Umaka has the opportunity to change that, at least for a general audience including national legislators, in under three minutes while using only one slide.

A Research Associate at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Umaka won $2,000 at BNL’s second SLAM competition, in which she and nine other junior scientists presented their research in front of a live audience. Umaka planned to present her work this past Wednesday, March 5th to an audience of politicians, judges and people generally interested in science.

Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY1) attended the previous event and extended his congratulations to Umaka.

“Dr. Umaka’s unwavering commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and her exceptional curiosity exemplify the pioneering spirit that positions Long Island at the forefront of research and technological development,” LaLota wrote in an email. “I am confident that [she] will represent Suffolk Count with distinction, and I eagerly anticipate her continued achievements.”

While the winner of the national competition will receive $4,000, the opportunity to compete and to describe her work for a general audience has already provided important experience for Umaka.

“I am honored to represent BNL,” Umaka explained in an email. “I am thrilled to discuss my work to a large audience without the usual scientific jargon, which has led to a deeper understanding of my work.”

During the SLAM competition, these scientists, whose competition will be live-streamed, use three minutes to inspire, captivate, and enlighten audiences whose decisions could affect future support and funding for important research projects.

In 2023, when Daniel Marx, Deputy Group Leader of the EIC Accelerator Design Group at BNL, traveled to Washington to represent BNL, he met several politicians from around the country, including Reps LaLota and Andrew Garbarino (R-NY2).

The politicians, many of whose districts, like LaLota’s included a national lab, were “certainly interested,” said Marx. He recalls speaking with Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN3), who served as Chairman of Energy and Water Appropriations.

Fleischmann, whose committee sets the budget for the Department of Energy and the national labs, was “very interested in having a conversation with us about the interplay between science and politics and how we can work together on that.”

Marx also enjoyed meeting with Bill Foster (D-IL14), who has a PhD in physics and has signs like “I love physics” in his office. “He has a really good grasp of what’s going on,” Marx recalled.

Foster asked penetrating and important questions about Marx’s work on developing the Electron Ion Collider.

Quarks, gluons and slowing down

Umaka is looking forward to representing BNL at the national competition and to sharing the science she does with a national audience.

Umaka works at the sPHENIX experiment, which is a radical makeover of the original PHENIX experiment. The experiment collects data at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, or RHIC.

The size of a two-story house with a weight of about 1,000 tons (or about five adult blue whales), the sPHENIX detector will capture snapshots of 15,000 particle collisions per second.

After the superconducting magnet at the core of the sPHENIX traveled across the country from the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California to Brookhaven, it was installed in 2021. Umaka arrived at the lab before the sPHENIX was assembled.

“It’s not every time as a physicist or junior researcher that you start off with an experiment that is new,” said Umaka. 

The sPHENIX had to work out some early challenges. Initially, the experiment planned to use a mixture of gases in the time projection chamber that included neon. The war in Ukraine, however, created a shortage of neon, so the lab switched to a different gas and added isobutane. The group celebrated with an isobutane cake. Fortunately, the supermarket hadn’t run out of them.

Umaka explained in her winning talk that her experiments allow the team to explore the universe as it was millionths of a second after the Big Bang, when the primordial soup that contained quarks and gluons came together to create the world we know.

She compares the process at sPHENIX to having chicken soup in the form of the quark gluon plasma. The researchers then shoot small objects within a jet that are similar in scale to the other ingredients in the soup so they scatter off each other. From there, they can deduce the microscopic nature or point like structure of the plasma.

The role of sPHENIX is to record jets that come from the collision of nuclei that release quarks. 

“The jet shoots through the soup, and this is why we can use jets as a probe,” Umaka explained.

In the experiments, the soup exhibits collective behavior, which is similar to the response of a school of fish that turn in unison when disturbed. When the researchers look at the soup on the level of individual quarks and gluons, the particles should behave like molecules in a gas. 

By recording lots of collisions, sPHENIX increases the likelihood of finding and recording desirable jets useful for probing the soup at the level of individual quarks and gluons.

“We want to discover how the fluid-like (collective) nature of the soup emerges from fundamental interactions of quarks and gluons,” Umaka explained. 

Nigerian roots

Born in Nigeria, Umaka moved to Houston in her teens when her parents transferred to the United States. When she was younger, she wasn’t confident in her science aptitude. She took difficult courses in which the social structure worked against her advancement as a woman.

In Houston, she took a particle physics course. The professor suggested she’d do well in his group and that she’d get to go to Geneva to do research.

“Sign me up,” she recalled saying, and she did.

A resident of Brookhaven, Umaka enjoys visiting the mall, reading books, attending yoga classes, listening to music and talking with family.

As for the SLAM event, Umaka appreciates the way the competition has increased her visibility.

“If people like the talk, they will invite you to do other stuff, which is great,” she said.
