Once again Ward Melville senior Tommy Engel led his team in scoring in a League II matchup against Bay Shore, scoring 16 points for a 59-49 victory at home Jan. 11.

Teammates Tommy Ribaudo and KJ Anderson each scored 12 points apiece and Lorenzo Beaton banked seven. Seniors Frank Carroll, Michael Dargan and Josh Horvath netted four points each. The win lifts the Patriots to 5-1 in the league, 10-2 overall. Ward Melville is one game behind Northport who sits atop the leaderboard.

The Patriots are back in action Jan. 14 with a road game against Walt Whitman. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Harborfields High School girls track team competed in an indoor crossover meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Harborfields Delilah Shapiro placed eighth in the 55-meter hurdle event with a 10.41, and teammates Marina Bak and Sophia Rose ran the 1500-meter race and placed 14th and 17th, respectively. Brianna Coakley finished fifth at 1000-meters with a time of 3:39.81.

The Lady Wildcats of Shoreham-Wading River competed in a section XI crossover indoor track meet at Suffolk County Community College Jan. 9. 

Madison Zelin placed 2nd over all in the 55-meter dash clocking in at 9.80. Teammates Olivia Pesso and Maddie-Lynn McKiernan placed 3rd & 4th respectively at the 1500-meter distance, and Madison Zelin placed first in the  300-meter dash with a 45.35.

It was all Port Jefferson in a league VII home game against Shelter Island where the Royals made short work of the Islanders with a 71-11 victory Jan. 11. 

Senior Peter Murphy led the way for the Royals with 7 rebounds and 6 field goals for 12 points, Steven Bayer hit a triple and 4 field goals for 11 and Conor Daily banked 10. 

The win lifts the Royals to 6-2 in league 6-3 overall. Port Jeff retakes the court Jan. 13 with another home game against Greenport. Tip-off is at 6:15 p.m.

The Smithtown High School East girls winter track team competed in an indoor crossover meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Sarah Wisnieski clocked a 5:32.34 in the 1500 meter event, and Kate Ball placed 10th. Grace McDonald placed sixth in shot put with a throw of 28 feet and 3 1/2.”

It was the battle of the Bulls when Smithtown East traveled to Smithtown West High School where East faced an unrelenting defensive press by Smithtown West in a League III matchup Dec. 20. Smithtown West caused several turnovers that resulted in a 21-point lead at the half. West benched their starters and played the balance of their roster in the 62-36 victory to remain undefeated.  

Smithtown West senior forward Patrick Burke led his team in scoring with a free throw and eight field goals for 17 points. Teammate Tyler Anderson followed netting 14, and Lorenzo Rappa banked eight. 

Smithtown East sophomore Benjaman Haug hit a three-pointer five from the floor and six from the free throw line for 19 points.

After an abbreviated winter track and field season earlier this year, Huntington’s girls track team showed no signs of slowing down in a crossover invitational meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood Dec. 19.

Olivia Conte won the 55-meter hurdles at 9.17 seconds. Hope Bilkey finished second in the 55-meter dash at 7.95 seconds with Brianna Halbeisen placing sixth. Jannel Maroquin clocked in at 3:45.94 at 1000-meters good enough for fifth place. It was a Huntington one-two finish at the 300 meter distance with Bilkey and Conte with at 45.87 and 46.12 seconds. respectively.

The Blue Devils are back on track again at SCCC in the Jim Howard invitational Jan. 5. Start time is 5 p.m.

It was Tommy Engel who had the hot hand for the Patriots and scored seemingly from anywhere on the floor as the senior forward banked a team high 27 points for Ward Melville in a 71-28 victory over Lindenhurst. Engel drained seven three-pointers and netted three field goals to lead his team in the League II home game Dec 17.

Senior Frank Carroll banked five from the floor and one from the line for 11 points, and Lorenzo Beaton scored seven. The win lifts the Patriots to 2-0 in league, 6-0 overall. 

The Patriots are back in action with a road game against Commack Dec 22. Tip-off is at 6:45 p.m. 

It was the Huntington Blue Devils defense that kept the Bulls at bay at Smithtown High School East where East trailed 33-7 at the half time break. Huntington coasted in the second half to notch a 48-20 victory in the League III matchup Dec. 14.

Huntington senior forward Emily Plachta led the way for the Blue Devils with seven field goals a triple and three from the line for 20 points, teammates Gianna Forte banked nine and Junie Nosile battled in the paint for six points. Smithtown East juniors Darcy DeBenedittis and Josie Lent scored four points apiece for the Bulls.

The win lifts Huntington to 3-0 in league play, 6-0 overall. The loss drops Smithtown East to 1-2 in league, 1-4 overall. Both teams are back in action Dec. 17 when Smithtown East has a road game against Copiague at 4 p.m. and Huntington hosts Hills East with a 5 p.m. start.

It was all Julia Greek for the Patriots in a League II matchup at home against Connetquot where the junior point guard hit four out of five three-pointers in the first eight minutes of play to put Ward Melville up 21 points. With a 30-point lead to open the fourth quarter, Ward Melville head coach Jamie Edson spelled his starters and flushed the Patriot bench, where 12 different plays scored in the 61-22 rout.

Greek tallied six treys, four field goals and a free throw for a team high 27 points in the Patriots’ league opener Dec 13. Ward Melville junior Gianna Hogan netted seven points, and seniore Siena Hart and freshman Emma Bradshaw banked four points apiece. The win lifts the Patriots to 1-0 in league 4-1 overall in this early season.

Ward Melville retakes the court with a road game against Lindenhurst Dec. 17 with a 5 p.m. start.
