Huntington Blue Devils bag Smithtown East Bulls

It was the Huntington Blue Devils defense that kept the Bulls at bay at Smithtown High School East where East trailed 33-7 at the half time break. Huntington coasted in the second half to notch a 48-20 victory in the League III matchup Dec. 14.

Huntington senior forward Emily Plachta led the way for the Blue Devils with seven field goals a triple and three from the line for 20 points, teammates Gianna Forte banked nine and Junie Nosile battled in the paint for six points. Smithtown East juniors Darcy DeBenedittis and Josie Lent scored four points apiece for the Bulls.

The win lifts Huntington to 3-0 in league play, 6-0 overall. The loss drops Smithtown East to 1-2 in league, 1-4 overall. Both teams are back in action Dec. 17 when Smithtown East has a road game against Copiague at 4 p.m. and Huntington hosts Hills East with a 5 p.m. start.

Ward Melville Patriots pummel T-Birds

It was all Julia Greek for the Patriots in a League II matchup at home against Connetquot where the junior point guard hit four out of five three-pointers in the first eight minutes of play to put Ward Melville up 21 points. With a 30-point lead to open the fourth quarter, Ward Melville head coach Jamie Edson spelled his starters and flushed the Patriot bench, where 12 different plays scored in the 61-22 rout.

Greek tallied six treys, four field goals and a free throw for a team high 27 points in the Patriots’ league opener Dec 13. Ward Melville junior Gianna Hogan netted seven points, and seniore Siena Hart and freshman Emma Bradshaw banked four points apiece. The win lifts the Patriots to 1-0 in league 4-1 overall in this early season.

Ward Melville retakes the court with a road game against Lindenhurst Dec. 17 with a 5 p.m. start.

Port Jefferson’s girls’ basketball squad, although short on roster depth with only seven players suited, are long on talent when the Royals made short work of Miller Place in a non-league home game with a 67-34 victory Dec. 10.

Junior point guard Lola Idir led the way for the Royals seeming to score three pointers at will, nailing seven treys a field goal and three from the free throw line for a team high of 28 points.

Senior teammates Annie Maier hit two triples and six field goals for 18 points, and Abigail Rolfe banked 9. Miller Place seniors Emma LaMountain scored 14 and Lauren Molinaro netted 13.

The win lifts the Royals to 3-1 while Miller Place searches for that elusive first win in this early season.

Wildcats hold on for the win!

Shoreham-Wading River briefly held onto a four-point lead with 2 minutes left in regulation when the visiting Baymen of Hampton Bays rallied to tie the game at 49 all with 1:54 left in the game.

The Wildcats scored at the :59 second mark to take a 51-49 advantage that set up a nail-biting finish, but were able to hold on for the win. The Wildcats were at full strength after an extended football season sidelined some of their starters (needing to meet the required number of practices), in the first few games of this early season.

Senior Liam Leonard led the way for the Wildcats with two field goals, two trey’s and five free throws for 15 points followed by teammate Anthony Osness, who banked five from the floor and one from the line for 11 points.

Ward Melville’s Ribaudo’s buzzer beater

The Patriots of Ward Melville trailed almost the entire game, at one point down by 11 points, in a non-league road game against Sachem North. The Patriots tied the game at 41-41 with less than a minute left in regulation when Tommy Ribaudo’s three-pointer at the final buzzer gave the Patriots their only lead in the game when it mattered most, a 44-41 victory in a thriller Tuesday night, Dec. 7.

The win lifts the Patriots to 3-0 with another non-league matchup before they begin league play with a road game against Connetquot Dec. 14. Game time is 6:45 p.m.

Ward Melville too much for Centereach

The Cougars of Centereach a League IV team took on the League I powerhouse Ward Melville in their season opener in a non-league matchup on the road Nov 30. The Patriots dominated the first 8 minutes of play but the Cougars chipped away in the second quarter to slow the Patriots surge. Ward Melville sophomore KJ Anderson had the hot hand in the second half on his way to a team high of 14 points to put the game away 68-34. Seniors Tommy Ribaudo banked 11 points and Tommy Engle and Frank Carroll netted 9 points apiece.

Timmy McCarthy led the way for the Centereach nailing 12 points with help from teammates Tariq Earl and Will Kiernan who scored 5 points each.

Centereach has another non-league contest before they host their League season opener at home against North Babylon Dec 7. Game time is 5:45 p.m.

The Patriots have three more non-league games before their League season opens at Connetquot Dec 14. Tip-off is 6:45 pm.

Patriots win season opener

The Ward Melville girls 2021-22 basketball season is back to a full slate of games unlike last “year” which featured all of five games in the COVID-abbreviated schedule.

The Patriots opened at home Nov. 23 with a non-league matchup against the West Hampton Beach Hurricanes where junior guard Julia Greek led the way in scoring for the 47-26 win. The Patriots retake the court with a scrimmage and three more non-league matchups before league play begins on Dec. 13, where they’ll host Connetquot. Tipoff is at 5 p.m.

Freezin’ for a reason.

The Town of Brookhaven held its 12th annual Polar Plunge at Cedar Beach this past weekend, where 544 people stripped down and hit the chilled water of the Long Island Sound all for a good cause.

On Saturday, Nov. 20, volunteers gathered at the beach in their swimsuits and shorts to benefit the Special Olympics which raises funds and awareness for Special Olympics New York athletes in the Long Island region. This year a collective $131,033 was raised.

“The Polar Plunge is a great opportunity for the community to make a difference in the lives of the Special Olympics athletes,” said Supervisor Ed Romaine (R). “I thank all the volunteers, Town employees, police, fire and ambulance staff who work so hard to support the Special Olympics athletes every year.”

Special Olympics New York is the largest state chapter in the country, serving more than 51,000 registered athletes and unified partners across New York with year-round sports training, athletic competition and health screenings.

The organization also partners with about 250 schools statewide to offer Unified Sports, where students with and without disabilities compete as teammates. All Special Olympics New York programs are offered at no cost to athletes, their families and caregivers.

Wildcats win 26-23

Shoreham Wading River at 9-1 had a score to settle when they faced Bayport in the Suffolk County D-IV championship at the Kenneth P. Lavalle stadium Nov. 19.

Bayport, the only team that beat the Wildcats in week 6 of the regular season, seemed to have the measure of the Wildcats in the closing minutes of the game with four-point lead.

With 1:11 left on the clock and the hopes of another Suffolk Div IV championship fading, the Wildcats found themselves deep in their own territory when quarterback Dylan Zahn hit wide receiver Liam Leonard on a 33-yard pass who turned on the jets to go 71 yards for the TD to put the Wildcats out front for the 26-23.

Bayport didn’t go quietly throwing to the endzone in the final three plays of the game but the Wildcats defense held for the 26-23 win and with it advance to the Long Island Championship game.

Senior running-back Max Barone found the endzone three times rushed for 126 yards on 28 carries in the win. The Wildcats are back at Lavalle Stadium Nov. 27 where they’ll face North Shore. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

Northport Tigers field hockey ends perfect season

Having won their New York State Class A field hockey semi-final by five goals the day before against Clarence High School, the Northport Tigers advanced to the championship round on Sunday, Nov. 14, against section 2 finalist Shenendehowa High School.

It would be Olivia McKenna’s stick that made the difference when the Northport midfielder rocked the box off an assist by senior forward Shannon Smith to put the Tigers up 1-0. Although Shenendehowa surged in the third quarter, the Tiger defense was able to keep their opponents at bay for what would be the final score to win the NYSPHSAA Class A tournament.

Senior co-captain Sophia Bica and McKenna were a potent one-two combination where both topped Suffolk County scoring charts with Bica tallying 17 goals and 22 assists for 39 points, and McKenna had 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points.

Northport finished their 2021 campaign with a perfect 21-0 record.
