Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Sixth Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the man who allegedly stole merchandise from a Port Jefferson Station store this month.

The man pictured allegedly stole tools from Ace Hardware, located at 1106 Route 112, on February 13 at approximately 10:50 a.m.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest. The Suffolk County Police Department released the following statement on March 10 on the brush fires in the pine barrens this past weekend:

“Following an investigation by Suffolk County Police Arson Section detectives, the cause of multiple
brush fires on March 8 has been preliminarily ruled accidental. Detectives believe the cause is related to
a fire that spread following an attempt to make s’mores at a home on North Cozine Road in Manorville.
It’s believed strong winds spurred additional fires from embers leading to the brush fires.
Police are continuing to speak with witnesses and investigate tips.”

Update: Joseph Scappatore has died from his injuries.

Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a single-vehicle crash that seriously injured a man in Greenlawn on March 9.

Joseph Scappatore was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado in a northwest direction on Greenlawn Road, when the vehicle left the roadway near Ducharme Lane, struck a tree, and overturned, at approximately 9:35 p.m.

Scappatore, 32, of Greenlawn was transported via Greenlawn Rescue to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.

Suffolk County Police have arrested a Brentwood man for allegedly driving while intoxicated following a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a woman in Hauppauge on March 9.

Eybee Guevara was driving a 2021 Subaru southbound on Route 111 when his vehicle struck an eastbound 2011 Honda at the intersection with Route 347 at approximately 4:35 a.m.

A passenger in the Honda, Ashley Flores-Reyes, 29, of Coram, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The Honda driver, Rafael Gonzalez-Duran, 46, of Brentwood, and passenger Allison Vasquez-Guevera, 23, of Smithtown, were also transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Guevara, 27, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated: Previous Conviction Within 10 years. He is scheduled to be arraigned on March 10 at First District Court in Central Islip.

Suffolk County Police arrested a man on March 7 for allegedly driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident involving a police vehicle on the eastbound Sunrise Highway in Yaphank.

A police officer driving a marked highway patrol vehicle eastbound in the right lane of Sunrise Highway, approaching Exit 57, was struck by a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe that sideswiped the police vehicle from the left lane, at 11:58 p.m. The driver continued driving eastbound until he was pulled over by the officer and arrested by members of the Street Takeover Task Force.

The driver, Cristian Sanchez, 25, of Coram, was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of an accident with no injuries.

He was being held overnight in the Fifth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on March 8.

Suffolk County Police cited a driver for an illegal speed contest and reckless on March 8 in Ronkonkoma. Members of the Street Takeover Task Force observed a 2018 Toyota Corolla traveling westbound on the Long Island Expressway, near Exit 59, racing another vehicle at speeds of 130 mph, at 12 a.m.

Officers stopped the Toyota and cited the driver, Lelis Zavala, 23, of Oyster Bay, for Unlawful Speed Contest, along with eight other vehicle and traffic infractions. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on March 28. The vehicle was impounded.

A man allegedly stole assorted vapes from Sunoco, located at 3423 Route 112, on February 13 at 11:35 a.m.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the murder of a man who was found on a Blue Point beach on March 4.

Fifth Precinct officers responded to the beach at the end of Blue Point Avenue at approximately 6:30 a.m. after a passerby reported a body on the beach. When officers arrived, they found Carlos Lopez with stab wounds. Lopez, 27, of Central Islip, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852- 6392 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

Suffolk County Police arrested a man on March 4 for operating electronic gambling devices at a business in
Shirley.

In response to numerous community complaints, Seventh Precinct Crime Section officers conducted an inspection check at Lucky Smoke Shop and Beer, located at 20 Floyd Road at approximately 4 p.m. During the inspection, officers observed three electronic gambling devices in the rear of the store. The devices were seized.

The manager of the store, Ankit Patel, 30, of Selden, was charged with Possession of a Gambling
Device. The Brookhaven Fire Marshal issued numerous summonses for violations of the New York State fire code and condemned the location over safety concerns.

Patel was issued a Field Appearance Ticket and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on a later date.
