Shelter Pet of the Week

UPDATE: Samson has been adopted!

MEET SAMSON!

Samson is an eight year-old Male Boxer/Pit Mix who was found abandoned in a park with his sister after his mom passed away. His sister, Delilah, has found her furever home, but Samson is still sadly at the Smithtown Animal Shelter waiting for a loving owner to come along. Samson adores people, is a big fan of snuggles, and is very friendly and gentle. He often gets overlooked because of his age, but he has as much energy and desire to play as any young dog. Samson will do well in a home with older children and with some dogs.

If you are interested in meeting Samson, please fill out an application to schedule time to properly interact with him in a domestic setting, which includes a Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and a Dog Walk trail.

Additional Foster Opportunity:

If you have no other pets or young children at home, and are looking for a way to serve your community, please consider signing up to be a foster. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens, and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for extended periods of time.

Thinking About Adoption:

The Smithtown Animal Shelter’s primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to us. The Animal Control Officers and Kennel Attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another.

Residents who have other pets can arrange to bring your four-legged family member to the shelter or set up an at home meet & greet to see how your prospective family member does with other family, pets and the household itself. Please allow yourself an hour minimum to meet with your potential new family member.

Hours at the Smithtown Animal Shelter, 410 Middle Country Road, Smithtown are currently Monday – Saturday 10AM – 3PM. (Sundays and Wednesday evenings: by appointment only).

While they are open to the public, they ask that you call ahead to schedule an appointment.

To inquire about the Pet of the Week or to meet your potential soulmate, please call the Smithtown Animal Shelter at 631-360-7575.

Annie

MEET ANNIE!

This week’s shelter pet is Annie, a beautiful 15-year-old dilute calico up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. This sweet senior loves to get attention and will let you know when she is done. Annie is missing most of her teeth but is healthy for her age. She is believed to have been left behind when her mom went into a nursing home.

If you would like to meet Annie please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with her in a domestic setting.

This week’s shelter pet is Luke, a fox hound mix waiting at the Smithtown Animal Shelter for his furever home.

This lovely boy was a pandemic puppy, adopted out of boredom without the effort or knowledge needed to make him a healthy and happy dog. Luke has had no socialization and lived in a chaotic environment where he spent most of his time locked away on his own. He is a sweet boy that needs a patient home that can socialize and expose him to the world. He may have food aggression with other animals and he shows no interest in other animals at the shelter except concern.

If you would like to meet Luke, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with him in a domestic setting.

Toto

MEET TOTO!

This week’s shelter pet is Toto, a handsome 1-year-old grey tabby cat currently up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Toto adores playing with other cats and anything he can turn into a toy and is very vocal.

Toto

He has an allergy condition that will likely flair up on and off throughout his life.  His skin will thicken and get red and itchy and he will require an injection of steroids when he flairs up. The condition can also effect his eyes, requiring steroid drops to decrease inflammation. He will need a very special home that can manage this chronic, but not life-threatening issue.

If you would like to meet Toto, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with him in a domestic setting.

This week’s shelter pets are Chester and Rocky who arrived at the Smithtown Animal Shelter at the end of September.

Rocky and Chester are a pair of friends who have lived together for over six years. Rocky is a six year-old Male Orange Tabby Domestic Short Hair, while Chester is an eight year-old Male Tuxedo Domestic Medium Hair. The two ended up without a home after a divorce, but have continued their very close bond in the Animal Shelter. They have so far been a bit shy because of the new environment, but when they’re shown a little love they start to open up. Rocky seems to be the more outgoing of the two, while Chester will follow him to see how he responds to people. The shelter staff  would love for them to be adopted together, but they can be separated for the right owners.

All of the felines at the Shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board certified Veterinarian.

If you would like to meet Chester and Rocky, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with them in a domestic setting.

Zendaya

MEET ZENDAYA!

This week’s shelter pet is Zendaya, a beautiful spayed domestic short hair up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. She just turned 1 and is playful, adventurous and a HUGE flirt.

Zendaya

This stunner has Feline Leukemia, so she will need to be the only cat, placed with other positive cats, or Leukemia vaccinated cats.

Cats with leukemia typically live a short life, but they are filled with love to give and deserve the happiest homes to make the most of the time that they have.

If you would like to meet Zendaya, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with her in a domestic setting.

MEET GINA!

This week’s shelter pet is Gina, a brown tabby cat who arrived at the Smithtown Animal Shelter in late August after being abandoned outside a local grocery store.

Gina was a little shell shocked initially, but as she learns to trust, she is becoming a sweet little lady. She is approximately two years old and has no medical issues. She would do best in a quiet home.

If you would like to meet Gina, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with her in a domestic setting.

Holly & Misteltoe

MEET HOLLY AND MISTLETOE!

This week’s shelter pets are Holly and Mistletoe, up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. This mother/daughter duo have been together for 7 years and the shelter hopes to keep them together in their next home.

Holly & Misteltoe

Both small in stature, Holly (in the cat house) was just a baby herself when she had Mistletoe so they have grown up together. They found themselves at the shelter when their human mom became ill. Holly is loving and outgoing and Mistletoe is sweet and cuddly once she gets to know you. If you would like to meet  these sweethearts, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with them in a domestic setting.

MEET LOUISE!

This week’s shelter pet is Louise, a 7-year-old tabby cat currently up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

This petite beauty is as outgoing and loving as they come. Found as a stray by a Good Samaritan in July, Louise was looking for love (and food) the second she arrived at the shelter.

This little lady has advanced kidney disease so she may have months or just a year or two, but it will be packed with love and affection.

If you would like to meet Louise, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with her in a domestic setting.

Blaze. Photo from Smithtown Animal Shelter

Shelter Pet of the Week

This week’s shelter pet is Blaze, a long time resident at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.  A 9-year-old pit mix, he is a very protective dog and will need a home that can manage this. His trust can be easily bought with treats and a person he trusts doing the introductions.  Once Blaze loves you, it is forever. He likes to play ball, carry toys around, go for walks, splash in the pool and, above all, eat! He is a regular tough guy until it’s cold and rainy, then he becomes a little baby. Blaze would be best suited to an adult only home with no other pets.

If you would like to meet Blaze, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with him in a domestic setting.
