Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon (D) recently joined roadway safety advocates to announce a summer campaign targeting drunk driving.

Beginning during the July 4 holiday weekend, Toulon’s Office will increase DWI patrols and checkpoints from Huntington to the East End, continuing these measures throughout the summer in an effort to keep Suffolk’s roadways safe. According to the Sheriff’s Office, its DWI team has already had record-high impaired driving arrests this year, with a nearly 40% increase in DWI/DUI arrests from 2022.

Coined “Operation H.E.A.T.,” the initiative aims to ramp up already heightened efforts to mitigate these increases.  

“The ‘heat’ is on this summer for drunk and drugged drivers in Suffolk County,” Toulon said during a press event Thursday, June 29. “Our deputy sheriffs will be out in full force patrolling the roadways with an eye out for impaired drivers. If you don’t drive sober, you will be pulled over.” 

Joining Toulon was the family of Andrew McMorris, a 12-year-old Boy Scout who was fatally hit by a drunk driver in 2018 while hiking with his Scout troop. The driver in that crash was found guilty of aggravated vehicular homicide and sentenced to 8 1/3 to 25 years in prison.

“The Andrew McMorris Foundation asks everyone this summer and always to please make a promise to never drink and drive,” said Alisa and John McMorris of the Andrew McMorris Foundation. “Call a cab, call a friend, save a life, start a trend. You don’t have to be a superhero to save someone’s life. Just take the keys.”

Paige Carbone, regional executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, also attended the meeting. She offered her support for the department initiative, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement.

“Summer is one of the deadliest times of the year on our highways,” she said. “MADD supports Operation H.E.A.T. and will join the efforts by providing staff and volunteers to participate in checkpoints across the county this summer.” 

The regional director added, “Our mission is to end drunk driving, and MADD encourages alternatives, such as designating a non-drinking driver, rideshares and using public transportation. That can prevent these crimes from happening.”

Toulon also offered these tips:

  • If you are hosting a party, designate a sober driver or arrange alternate transportation to ensure guests get home safely.
  • If you’ve been drinking and don’t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home, call a taxi or rideshare service or stay for the night. 
  • Take the keys from a friend if you think they are about to drive while impaired.

Suffolk County Police on Feb. 19 arrested a man for allegedly driving while intoxicated following a motor vehicle crash in West Babylon. 

Madison Cedeno was driving a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer eastbound on Sunrise Highway, at Hubbards Path, when the vehicle struck a 2019 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck at approximately 8:40 p.m. The Chevrolet overturned and came to rest on top of the guardrail. The Mercury struck the guardrail and the center median. 

Highway Patrol officers arrived at the scene and determined Cedeno was allegedly intoxicated. He was taken into custody and transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip where he was treated for minor injuries and released. The driver of the Chevrolet, an adult male, was transported to the same hospital for treatment of minor injuries. 

Cedeno, 41, of Dix Hills, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.

Suffolk County Police arrested a teenage driver on Feb. 4 following a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured two people in Dix Hills.

A 17-year-old female was driving a 2010 Honda Civic with three passengers eastbound on Vanderbilt Parkway, one-quarter mile east of McCulloch Drive, when she lost control of vehicle and crashed into the woods at approximately 9:15 p.m.

Two of the passengers, Kenia Perez and Santos Mendez, both 18-years-old, were transported to local hospitals for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The third passenger, Yanci Velis-Mendoza, 21 and the 17-year-old driver were treated at local hospitals for minor injuries. 

The 17-year-old was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. She will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date. 

The Honda was impounded for a safety check. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.

Suffolk County Police arrested a Holbrook woman on Feb. 1 for Leandra’s Law for allegedly driving while intoxicated following a motor vehicle crash with her 10-year-old son in the vehicle.

Veliza Lugo was driving a 2022 Chevrolet SUV southbound on Hawkins Avenue, just north of Smith Street, in Lake Ronkonkoma when she struck two other vehicles at 5:46 p.m. It was determined Lugo was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the crash. There were no injuries reported in the crash and the child was released into the custody of family.

Lugo, 42, was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law), Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The Chevrolet was impounded. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Suffolk County Police arrested a woman on Dec. 10 for driving while intoxicated after she drove the wrong way on Nesconset Highway in Hauppauge.

A 911 caller reported a sedan was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Nesconset Highway at 3:10 a.m. A Fourth Precinct Patrol officer responded and pulled over the driver of the sedan, a 2020 Honda Civic, just west of Browns Road at approximately 3:15 a.m.

The officers determined the driver, Karen Morales-Moreno, was intoxicated and placed her under arrest.

Morales-Moreno, 21, of Port Jefferson, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated. She was being held at the Fourth Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip that same day

Six people were arrested at the start of the holiday weekend in Port Jefferson Station.

Highway Patrol Bureau Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team (SAFE-T) officers conducted a sobriety checkpoint at the intersection of Route 112 and Hallock Avenue during the overnight hours of July 3 into July 4. from 11:05 p.m. until 2:15 a.m. 

The checkpoint was part of an ongoing holiday weekend enforcement initiative targeting alcohol and drug impaired driving.  A total of 435 vehicles went through the checkpoint. 

The following people were charged with Driving While Intoxicated:

  • Cesar Ortiz, 32, of 54 Carver Blvd., Bellport
  • Erik Anderson, 38, of 208 Terryville Road, Port Jefferson Station
  • Richard Russo, 61, of 12 Mark St., Port Jefferson Station
  • Hashim Qayyum, 23, of 619 Hawkins Road, Selden
  • Alexia Smith, 23, of 3540 Gregg Court, Wantagh
  • Salvatore Laduca, 58, of 7 Blueberry Ridge Road, Setauket

All six will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 4.

Suffolk County Police last night arrested a woman for allegedly driving while intoxicated after her vehicle crashed into a utility pole and caught fire in Hauppauge July 29.

Melanie L’ hommedieu was driving a 2009 BMW southbound on Wheeler Road, at the intersection of Marlo Lane, when the vehicle crossed a double yellow line, crashed into a utility pole and caught fire at approximately 10:05 p.m. Two men in a vehicle traveling behind the BMW witnessed the crash and stopped to offer assistance. The Good Samaritans safely pulled L’hommedieu from the BMW. There were no injuries.

L’ hommedieu, 45, St. James, was arrested and charged with DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation and multiple traffic violations. She is being held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 30.

Suffolk County Police Department Highway Patrol Bureau, assisted by New York State Police, arrested seven people during an overnight sobriety checkpoint in Huntington Station.

Suffolk police officers, with the assistance of state troopers, conducted a sobriety checkpoint at the corner of New York Avenue and Church Street in Huntington Station. The checkpoint was conducted as part of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Saturation Saturday, a high-visibility evening where police departments step up their enforcement efforts to remind communities that they are out in full force, looking for impaired drivers as the Labor Day holiday approaches. A total of 417 vehicles went through the checkpoint.

The following people were charged with driving while intoxicated:

  • Jeffrey Hindla, 29, of Sayville
  • Raymond Archer, 51, of Huntington Station
  • Selena Piliere, 29, of Huntington Station
  • Suellen Gordon, 54, of Huntington Station
  • James R. Roldos, 51, of Huntington Station

In addition, Nicole Gulmi, 34, of Melville, was charged with driving while impaired by alcohol. All of the above-named individuals will be arraigned Dec. 23 at 1st District Court in Central Islip.

Hixon Flores-Hernandez, 21, of Huntington Station, was charged with one count of driving while ability impaired by drugs. He was processed by state police and released on bail.

Suffolk County police arrested a Coram woman for Leandra’s Law after she was allegedly involved in a single-vehicle crash May 28 that injured her three children.

Tyleen Smith was driving a 2004 Saturn Vue northbound on West Yaphank Road when her vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree in front of 99 West Yaphank Road at 6:07 a.m. Smith had four passengers in the vehicle, including the three children.

Smith’s 11-year-old twins, a boy and girl, were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of broken bones. Smith and her 8-year-old son were also treated at Stony Brook University Hospital for minor injuries. Front seat passenger Talisha Thomas, 43, of Bellport, was transported to Long Island Medical Center in East Patchogue for treatment of minor injuries.

Smith, 36, was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger (Leandra’s Law) and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She will be held overnight at the 4th Precinct and will be arraigned at 1st District Court in Central Islip May 29.

Suffolk County Child Protective Services was notified.

Attorney information was not immediately available.

Suffolk County police arrested a man for an alleged DWI after a traffic stop in Centereach in which there were three 14-year-old female passengers in the vehicle.

David Michels was driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla northbound on Stanley Drive when he was stopped for a traffic violation at approximately 6:30 p.m. May 24.

Michels, 46, of Centereach, was arrested and charged with allegedly driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger (Leandra’s Law) and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

The three 14-year-old passengers were released to family members at the scene.

Michels was held overnight at the 6th Precinct.
