Smithtown Township Arts Council has announced that the works of Saint James artist Josephine Puccio will be on view at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown from Feb. 5 to April 3.

From a very young age, Puccio loved art. Growing up in Brooklyn, her family would visit her grandparents in the country (now known as Howard Beach). The artist fell  in love with the beauty of the trees, flowers and natural landscape and at age 7 she begged her parents to buy her crayons and paper so she could draw what she saw.

“Till this day I can sit for hours upon hours and paint what I see in hopes of bringing to everyone the beauty, excitement and love for nature that I feel in my heart!” said Puccio.

The artist moved to Florida for eight years, returning to Long Island in 2022. Before her move, she was an award-winning artist exhibiting her work and winning many prizes at galleries across the island from East Hampton to East Meadow having exhibited at Guild Hall, Suburban Art League, Wet Paints Studio Group among many others. Happy to return to the Art scene on Long Island, Puccio continues to exhibit her art and win prizes!

The exhibition, part of the Arts Council’s Outreach Gallery Program, may be viewed during regular banking hours Monday -Thursday 9 am – 4 pm; Friday 9 am – 6 pm; Saturday 9 am – 1 pm.

Smithtown Township Arts Council has announced that the works of Kings Park artist Gisela Skoglund will be on view at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown from Oct. 28 to Jan. 3. The exhibition, part of the Arts Council’s Outreach Gallery Program, may be viewed during regular banking hours Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Skoglund’s life has taken her through many artistic expressions. Early on her original passion was for oil on canvas. In high school she was awarded a scholarship to Pratt Institute where she pursued advertising art.

All her endeavors have brought her to the use of painting in a wide variety of mediums including watercolor, acrylic, oil pastel, pen, and ink. Skoglund’s inspirations come from the beauty of nature and other sights which appear in everyday life. She has exhibited her work in juried and invitational shows across Long Island. “I find that painting transports me to a place where time is forgotten, and I am totally immersed in creativity,” she said.

Smithtown Township Arts Council has announce that the works of Nesconset artist Jim Minet will be on view from August 28 to October 25 at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown. The exhibition, part of the Arts Council’s Outreach Gallery Program, may be viewed during regular banking hours Monday – Thursday 9 am – 4 pm; Friday 9 am – 6 pm; Saturday 9 am – 1 pm.

After studying at The Art Students League in Manhattan, Minet began his teaching experience at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan and is now focusing exclusively on teaching venues on Long Island.  Originally educated at Long Island University / CW Post and graduating with a Bachelor of Science, he went on to become National Sales Manager for several corporations before starting his own business in Marketing for the art materials industry. Minet ran his marketing business for over 10 years but the passion to paint full time remained, so in 2021 he transitioned full time to painting and teaching art.

Minet paints in oils and acrylics and watercolor. His works showing at Apple Bank is a representational array of oil and acrylic paintings focused on a  variety of landscape subjects. His body of work also includes semi-abstract work and a variety of subjects from still life to landscape to portraiture.

Minet teaches fine art painting for the Smithtown Township Arts Council at the Mills Pond Gallery in St, James and the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn. He is also a Brand Ambassador for Holbein, Legion Paper, and General Pencil Company and frequently conducts workshops throughout the Long Island area. He has exhibited artwork at multiple locations in the New York/Long Island area.

Smithtown Township Arts Council has announced that the works of Smithtown artist Thomas DiCicco will be on view May 15 – July 18, 2024 at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown. The exhibition, part of the Arts Council’s Outreach Gallery Program, may be viewed during regular banking hours Monday – Thursday 9 am – 4 pm; Friday 9 am – 6 pm; Saturday 9 am – 1 pm.

Thomas DiCicco is a lifelong resident of Smithtown and one of the co-founders of Globecomm, a large satellite communications company, also based in Smithtown. Retiring early, he quickly became aware he needed something to take up his time, and tried his hand at art, never having painted anything before. He started his first acrylic painting in 2018 at age 68 years old. The results of his first attempt came out better than he expected, and so he was encouraged to continue trying this new time occupying endeavor.

In the beginning he started painting those works of well-known impressionist artists, starting with Van Gogh and then moving on to several of the other famous names from the same time period. After doing numerous impressionist paintings of still life and landscapes, he moved toward abstract works by well-known early leaders in abstract work, like Kandinsky and Klee, who astonishingly were painting abstract works more than 100 years ago.

In each of the impressionist paintings in this exhibit, he tried to duplicate the original masterpiece as faithfully as possible, so that when it was finished, if it looked like the original, he was satisfied and used that as a gauge to judge his work. The famous Van Gogh Café piece in this exhibit was painted during COVID, and he thought that it would be a cleaver new twist to have the Café CLOSED, not unlike what we were experiencing in 2020.

Smithtown Township Arts Council (STAC) has announced In a press release that the works of Port Jefferson artist Robert Wallkam will be on view at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown from Oct. 4  to Dec. 6. The exhibition, part of the Arts Council’s Outreach Gallery Program, may be viewed during regular banking hours Monday – Thursday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Robert Wallkam received a Bachelor of Art Education from the University of Bridgeport followed by receiving a Master of Arts from New York University. He pursued a career at the Half Hollow Hills School District in Dix Hills, teaching all grade levels and subjects related to art. At the same time, he enjoyed acting as set designer for the Half Hollow Hills high school plays.

Always immersing himself in creative pursuits, Robert served on the Board of Directors at Theatre Three in Port Jefferson. His work has been widely exhibited throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.  His paintings are derived from his mind’s visions and childhood memories reflecting his love for Long Island and its many beaches.

Smithtown Township Arts Council has announced that the works of Three Village artist Patricia Yantz will be on view February 13 – April 14 at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown. The exhibition, part of the Arts Council’s Outreach Gallery Program, may be viewed during regular banking hours of Monday – Thursday 9 am – 4 pm; Friday 9 am – 6 pm; Saturday 9 am – 1 pm.

Artist Patricia Yantz is known for her beautiful acrylic and pastel landscape paintings. A former secondary art teacher at Sachem School District, Patty feels strongly about art as a communication tool. “Imagination is the beginning of creating. This creativity engages the mind and enables alternative ways of thinking and seeing. With so much emphasis today on critical thinking, creating art makes one think not only critically, but analytically, which is often overlooked in today’s world. Art is a bridge where artists can, through their paintings, communicate universally to reach people around the world.”

“Nature is the underlying theme of all my work, with a major inspiration being the Long Island landscape. I have been fortunate to have lived on Long Island my entire life…first, growing up on the North Shore in Nassau County and now as an adult living in Suffolk County.  The tidal wetlands of the North Shore have been an endless source of inspiration to me. The constant changing colors of the day along with the rising/falling tides always create unique views.  The winding waterways, always adding a sense of depth which reminds me to put things in perspective and awakens memories of my youth at the same time…this speaks to me when I am there, my special places which give me a sense of self.”

Muriel Musarra always enjoyed art and museums. Once she moved to the Three Village area over 50 years ago, she fell in love with the local landscape. “Being surrounded by this beautiful, picturesque area inspired me to learn to paint.” Muriel’s artist journey began in an adult art class at Ward Melville High School. She continued to study art, taking classes at Suffolk County Community College and Stony Brook University and art workshops at many local Art Museums and galleries across Long Island.

“I enjoy painting outdoors to capture the light and shadows of the scene. I especially enjoy painting water views for the wonderful reflections!”

Muriel paints in watercolor, oil, acrylic and gouache. Her award-winning works have been exhibited widely in exhibitions across Long Island including Wet Paints Studio Group, Setauket Artists Exhibitions, Gallery North, and South Bay Art Association, among many others.

Smithtown Township Arts Council has announced that the works of St. James artist John Hunt will be on view now through Sept. 9, 2022 at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown. The exhibition, part of the Arts Council’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular banking hours Monday – Thursday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

 A St. James resident for 45 years, John Hunt spent the majority of his life on Long Island with time away for military service and education. John holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from SUNY New Paltz and a Master of Fine Arts from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago.

“I have always had an interest in representational art and our surroundings,” said Hunt. “From the first time I flew in a plane and looked down at the landscape from a high altitude I became fascinated by the views I was seeing. Our normal relationship to the earth is from the ground and limited by our personal elevation. The view from a high altitude reveals patterns of man’s imprints on the earth as well as nature’s own from erosion or geological events or under ocean formations.”

“I have been able to travel to many areas in our country, especially in the western part of the states. The landscapes and topography are fascinating and prompt me to look at those areas from a greater elevation, so I refer to Google earth to explore the places I have visited from a vantage point way above the normal view. From that elevated position I search for patterns or formations that I find interesting and zoom in to select a view and adjust to arrive at a composition that I want to paint,” he said.

Smithtown Township Arts Council has announced in a press release that the works of Commack artist John Taylor will be on view from October 25 to December 16, 2021 at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown. The exhibition, part of STAC’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular banking hours Monday – Friday 9 am – 4 pm; Saturday 9 am – 1 pm.

John Taylor earned his associate’s degree, in commercial art from S.U.N.Y Farmingdale. There he met and studied with world-renowned painter/ illustrator Raphael DeSoto who introduced him to pastel painting. John feels fortunate to be able to pursue his passion for art full time now that he is retired. He works hard to improve his art skills by studying with many art groups on Long Island.

“It is the challenge of every artist to try and catch the beauty of a flower and succeed in doing so,” said Taylor.

Smithtown Township Arts Council has announced that the works of watercolor artist Mary Waka will be on view August 23 to September 22 at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown. The exhibition, part of STAC’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular banking hours Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“For me art is the synthesis of the fleeting moment that an image or subject portrays. With watercolor, I have an avenue to express and interpret this through shape, value and design. My hope is that the viewer enters personally into my painting, to find for themselves the story it conveys,” said Waka. “My beginnings in art started at a watercolor workshop with Eleanor Dragonette in Brooklyn. Then art classes at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. I continue to attend workshops with artists I admire.”

Mary teaches adult and children’s watercolor at the Smithtown Adult Education Program, Sachem Public library, Town of Brookhaven Recreation Center and Mills Pond Gallery among others.
