Licorice has been at Little Shelter in Huntington for over 480 days!

Licorice first entered the shelter system in January 2023 when he was found as a stray. He waited patiently for his family to claim him; however, that day never came. He sat at the town shelter for about a month before Little Shelter in Huntington stepped in. They rescued him, hoping he would have a better chance at finding a family here, yet that does not seem to be the case. He has been searching for his new family for over 480 days. It is a mystery to everyone as to why he is still waiting.

Licorice is an energetic dog with a lot of love and affection to give. He is a lab/collie mix estimated to be about 5-6 years old and weighing about 58 lbs. He is a sucker for tennis balls, squeaky toys, belly rubs, and of course treats. His only request is a home without any other furry friends as he is not a fan. Licorice is eager to please and excellent companionship material.

An additional incentive for his potential adopters is a waived adoption fee! For the month of June, Licorice will be the shelter’s Star of the Month. With this special recognition, they only ask for a $25 hold fee and that is it.

Don’t let Licorice spend another night in a shelter. If you are looking for a dog to play fetch with and snuggle up on the couch with then Licorice could be your perfect match!

Adopt Cadbury!

This weeks shelter pet is Cadbury, a healthy, fluffy, all white, domestic (male) rabbit that was brought to the Smithtown Animal Shelter as a stray.

Animal experts initially believed there was a possibility someone would come looking for him, but no one did. Cadburys captivating personality suits his majestic good looks. He is very inquisitive and boasts a natural sense of adventure. While Cadbury is cautiously beginning to make new furry friends at the shelter, he will instantly befriend anyone willing to share a sweet treat with him. He’s all personality!

Cadbury would thrive in a home that can provide space for him to run and exercise. Small cages are not recommended, especially for a boy his size. Let’s help Cadbury begin his greatest adventure yet and find a forever home where he will be idolized as a cherished member of one lucky family.If you are interested in meeting Cadbury, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with her in a domestic setting.

Special young dog at Little Shelter needs a special home

With a name synonymous with “warrior”, three-year-old Sloan is no stranger to adversity. Born into a hoarding situation, she, along with several others, was given another chance by Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center. After finding what was supposed to be her permanent home, Sloan sadly again found herself in a situation where she wasn’t able to be cared for properly, prompting her relinquishment to Road to Home Rescue Support.

After Sloan underwent blood work along with other necessary medical care, it was recognized that she suffered from a seizure disorder. Already settled into a loving foster home, it was then that her link to Little Shelter was discovered, prompting a collaboration between two incredible organizations. Working together to ultimately ensure her safety, future happiness, and well-being, both are invested in finding the best outcome for Sloan, putting her needs first and foremost.

Making remarkable strides with her foster mom, she is receiving her meds regularly and has not had another seizure under her current prescribed regime. Estimated to cost only $32.00/month, her twice daily medication has kept her seizures at bay and she has received a clean bill of health from her neurologist. She is spayed and up-to-date on her vaccines, as well as microchipped.

Thriving in her current living situation, she is finally able to just be her best self, engaging in playtime and enjoying cuddles, revealing an adorable, funny, and lovable personality. She has harmonious relationships with cats and other small dogs, is crate, leash, and wee wee pad trained (while making progress with going outside) and is just about perfect in every way that counts. Now, Sloan is ready to experience what all dogs deserve, a place where she is loved and cherished as part of a real family, in a forever home of her very own.

Shelter Pet of the Week: Peanut Butter

Adopt Peanut Butter!

This week’s Shelter Pet is Peanut Butter, up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. This adorable female, tan Dachshund mix is approximately ten years young and by all definitions, is absolutely perfect. Peanut Butter was living in a home with her people as an only child until her mom and dad welcomed a new baby. When the dynamic in the household changed, Peanut Butter’s family decided that managing an active toddler and a furry child was simply too much to handle. This poor baby was surrendered to the shelter through no fault of her own.

Peanut Butter is as delicious as her name… She adores being in the company of people and will not hesitate to greet new friends with hopes of receiving a good petting in return. This sweet girl has a fondness for snuggles and has a lot of unconditional love to give one lucky family. Peanut Butter’s ideal home can include a calm doggie sibling, possibly cats and kids preferably over the age of twelve. Little Peanut Butter deserves to have the happy ever after she was cheated out of. Let’s all help share Peanut Butter’s story, in hopes of giving her the very best life imaginable.

Shelter Pet of the Week: Bunnie XO

MEET BUNNIE XO!

This week’s featured shelter pet is Bunnie XO, a 5-year-old bully/mastiff mix who was abandoned in a park with her (presumed) boyfriend, Jelly Roll, but is now safe at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

Bunnie XO warms up quickly to all new people, gently nudges for attention and treats and loves to play. This sweet lady was obviously used for breeding and discarded. While she and Jelly enjoy seeing each other, they are not bonded and she would love to be in a home that will dote on her and show her affection all day long.

The shelter staff is still learning about her as she settles in and reveals her true personality but they assume she will accept calmer dogs (Jelly is very laid back). Shelter Pet of the Week: Mia

MEET MIA!

Mia is a stunning five year-old Female Mastiff/Labrador mix who sadly has called the Smithtown Animal Shelter home for over FOUR YEARS, after being hit by a car and then surrendered. To make matters worse, Mia was a “yard dog” living her first part of life outdoors, and wasn’t properly socialized. As a result, Mia has a little “stranger danger” so getting to know her may take a second visit before she starts giving out cuddles and paws.

Mia is a gorgeous and goofy girl who loves to play and throw toys around. She is a big fan of going on car rides, pup cups, and resting her head and big paws on her favorite people’s laps! The first time Mia gives you her paw, your heart will melt as she ever so gently insists upon holding your hand for a long period of time.

While it may take a few visits to get to know Mia, her loyalty and unconditional friendship is worth the constant supply of kisses, hugs and endless affection. Mia will need a home that can properly introduce her to new people in a way that makes her feel safe. Mia would do best in a home without any other pets or young children.

MEET SUGAR!

She’s Sugar, spice and everything nice! Sugar is a delightfully sweet, and petite, chocolate-colored Min-Pin (Miniature Pinscher and Boston Terrier) Mix. This six year old girl’s journey began under some very unfortunate circumstances, originally rescued by the Smithtown Animal Shelter from a terrible breeding situation where she was used, neglected, and discarded. After medical care for being malnourished and dehydrated, this tiny survivor was later adopted… only to be returned to the shelter two years later due to her fears when it comes to meeting new people. This poor girl has been failed by humans her entire life… and we are determined to find her a real happy furr-ever EVER happy ending!

As a result of all Sugar has endured, it takes her some time and understanding to warm up to people. The key to earning Sugar’s trust is simple; a little compassion, patience and understanding. She appreciates receiving doggy treats, which helps her to learn that there are good humans out there who are loving and want to care for her. This Sugar-Pie is highly intelligent and loves to learn. She is also energetic and eager to please.

Sugar can become protective of her people, however she will listen when corrected. She would be best suited in a quiet home with no other pets or children. Let’s get her story out to the world far and wide… if you’re not the right person for this sweetheart, you can still help by sharing her story on Social Media and with friends, neighbors and family.

MEET BUSTER!

This week’s featured shelter pet is Buster, a three-year-old chocolate lab up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

Handsome Buster arrived at the shelter last September. Young, energetic and a powerhouse of strength at 90 pounds, he loves all people, taking walks and, most of all, food! This guy is full of love and fun but he needs adjustment time to trust new people in the home. Buster is not your typical lab and needs to be in a home with no children, cats or dogs.

Shelter Pets of the Week: Disco, Beignet and Sally!

Meet Disco, Beignet and Sally!

These three magnificent kitties are all approaching their first birthday and anniversary at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. These stunning fur babies were overlooked as their littermates were adopted last year. The time has come for each one of them to find the perfect home while they are still kittens.

Disco; a ten month old domestic short hair boy, adorning a stunning tabby and white coat, will boogie his way right into your heart like a Studio 54 classic hit. His big green gemstone eyes are absolutely captivating. Disco was found as a baby, together with his sister in a feral colony last fall. He will not hesitate to introduce himself at first. It may require a little patience and understanding before he lets you give him a good petting. However, once Disco warms up to you, his playfulness and entertainment value are off the charts! Disco would be best suited in a quiet home with other cats, possibly dogs but not young children.

Beignet is a bewitching beauty that will surely win any kitten lover over! This short haired domestic female was found in a large colony of other kittens and cats and is about to turn one years old in May. Her litter was all very shy and timid upon rescue. Beautiful Beignet has slowly learned to trust people, but remains lady-like and reserved. A little time and patience for her to warm up to new faces is all it takes to receive endless affection and purrs. Beignet is playful, gets along well with other cats and would do best in a quiet home with older children and possibly dogs.

Sally is simply gorgeous! This domestic short-hair gal has unique tortoise shell coloring and is about to reach her first birthday in May. Sally and her brother were rescued as part of our TNR program (Trap Neuter Return). This little lady is quite the observer, preferring to take it all in rather than interact with people. A lot of love, patience and understanding will go a long way with this sweet fur baby. Sally gets along very nicely with other cats. She would be best suited in a quiet home, other cats, possibly with dogs, but no young children.

Shelter Pet of the Week: Maximus

MEET MAXIMUS!

This week’s featured shelter pet is Maximus, patiently waiting at the Smithtown Animal Shelter for his furever home. This medium haired boy just turned five in February and is fairly new to the shelter. He was loved from the moment he was found outside as a stray kitten. Sadly, his family fell upon hard times and could no longer give him the life he deserves.

While Maximus is adjusting at the shelter and is still heartbroken, it may take him a little time to warm up. Earning his trust is worth its weight in gold…as he will shower you with endless purring, adoration and unconditional love. Maximus has already proven to be a beloved companion and deserves another chance to find his person. Let’s help him find a lifetime of purr-fect memories. Maximus would do best in a quiet home with older children.
