Scientific discovery and fun at Wading River School Science Fair

Encouraging the next generation of scientists, Wading River School’s Science Fair brought together a school community of scientific discovery and pure moments of fun.

While balloons, bubbles, plants, crystals, magnets, eggs and more may have played important roles in experiments, the action-packed, scientifically engaging event was all about the camaraderie and connections among the students as they explored their scientific interests and curiosities.

More than 100 young scientists participated, and Shoreham-Wading River High School students served as judges, noting that the steps of the scientific method were followed in each experiment.

Principal Mr. Louis Parrinello thanked all who made the Science Fair a tremendous success, including teachers, support staff, parents and chairpeople Mr. Mike Morano and Dr. Andrea Stadler. In addition to the top-level experiments of the students, highlights included Dr. Stadler’s exciting elephant toothpaste chemistry experiment and the Van de Graaff generator, an electrostatic generator that created some hair-raising moments.

Middle Country Public Library’s Nature Explorium reopens April 1

Middle Country Public Library, 101 Eastwood Blvd., Centereach has announced that the library’s Nature Explorium will reopen April 1.

“We know that many of you are eager to visit the Nature Explorium and play outside. The Nature Explorium is an outdoor learning space for children and families to experience the benefits of nature. Children are invited to explore, play, and learn in a safe and natural environment. The Nature Explorium contains a variety of learning areas, all geared toward connecting children to a different aspect of nature. Whether they’re making a pie in the mud kitchen, climbing on a tree stump, or expressing artistic talent through song and dance on the Play It stage, children will discover the gift of the outdoors,” said the press release.

Local dancers to compete at World Irish Championships

Five talented young ladies from the Mulvihill-Lynch Irish Dance Studio of Lake Ronkonkoma are excited to be heading to Belfast, Ireland on April 8 to compete at the 2022 World Irish Dance Championships. This will be the first international competition the studio will be attending in three years.

Pictured are Maggie Webber, 18 from Lake Grove, Tori Corcoran, 17 from Holbrook, Millie Valenti, 10 from Sayville, Kyleigh Pilkington, 15 from Port Jefferson Station, and Leanna Sheridan, 16 from Hauppauge.

Port Jefferson Lady Royals fall to Babylon Eagles

Looking to build momentum after their victory over Stony Brook School three days earlier, the Lady Royals of Port Jefferson hit a roadblock Saturday morning when they hosted West Babylon.

In this first league game of the season, they fell to the Eagles 18-5. A young team that had only formed in 2017, the Port Jeff roster includes only four seniors, four sophomores and seven freshmen, who will be challenged in the Class D 2022 campaign. The Lady Royals retook the field on March 29 at home against the Smithtown West Bulls, where the Royals lost, 14-3.

Mount Sinai teachers meet in a ‘Battle of the Educators’

On Friday, March 25, the faculties of Mount Sinai middle and elementary schools took on their high school counterparts in a fundraising basketball exhibition. Billed as ‘The Battle of the Educators,’ the purpose of the fundraiser was to benefit the school district’s Booster Club. Almost two years since the event last took place due to the pandemic, the 19th edition of this local tradition was held before an enthusiastic crowd. There were T-shirt sales, halftime shooting contests and fun to go all around.

Newfield High School students put their eye on design

Students in Ms. McIntyre’s second and third period Computer Graphics 2 and College Computer Graphics classes at Newfield High School in Selden competed in the NHS Library Logo Design contest after learning about designing logos in class with librarian Ms. Cook. It was a very competitive contest filled with lots of creative original ideas. Congratulations to winner Daniel Savage, finalists Idania Nunez and Brian Padilla Alvarado, as well as the students in both Computer Graphics classes.

Four Shoreham-Wading River High School student-artists participated in an exhibition alongside some of the most talented students in the Suffolk County Art Leaders Association All-County and Senior Scholarship Show.

Underclassmen who presented works in the show were sophomore Caroline Lange, freshman Anna Marino and junior Meghan Thrash. Senior Lauren DeRosso won third place honors in the senior scholarship portion of the exhibit.

“It was great seeing our students share this space with so many skilled young artists,” said art teacher Samantha Shepard about the exhibition that highlights works created by some of Suffolk County’s top student-artists.

North Country Road students in Miller Place tell the tale of rescuing a local turtle

The Miller Place School District recently celebrated the official book launch of “Peachy Keen,” a book written and illustrated by Science Club students from North Country Road Middle School about their adventures rescuing a local sea turtle. The book launch was the culmination of a year-long science club project in partnership with the NY Marine Rescue Center in Riverhead. Canon USA sponsored the Marine Center program and graciously covered the costs of printing 250 copies, which are on sale at the NY Marine Rescue Center, the aquarium gift shop and at the MacArthur Airport gift shop. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to supporting the work of the NY Marine Rescue Center.

“This activity is exemplary of the Miller Place School District’s mission to empower students to creatively put their classroom lessons into action and make the world a better place,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marianne Cartisano. “The entire school community is proud of what these students accomplished, and we are grateful to the NY Marine Rescue Center and Canon USA for providing our students with this life changing opportunity.”

The turtle, which the students affectionately named Peachy Keen, was released back into the ocean in August of 2021 at Tiana Beach in Hampton Bays. Since that time, students and marine biologists have been tracking Peachy Keen’s progress from Long Island down the East Coast to Northern Florida. The book, written and illustrated by the 17 students of the NCRMS Science Club, tells the story about the students’ experiences and the lessons they learned about marine mammals that inhabit NY waters and the importance of keeping beaches clean. It also includes photos of Peachy Keen’s rehabilitation and journey back to the ocean.

Winners of Atelier at Flowerfield Student Art Show announced

Despite the threat of inclement weather, The Atelier at Flowerfield in St. James hosted an opening reception for the first annual Student Artists Juried Show on March 12. Student artists, their proud parents and teachers were present as the following student artists were recognized for their outstanding work.

First place winner “Through Someone’s Eyes” by Joseline Canales-Lazio of Huntington.

First Place was awarded to Joseline Canales-Lazio of Huntington for her artwork titled “Through Someone’s Eyes,” created with Conte Crayon on black paper.

Julie Yang of Setauket captured Second Place for her acrylic piece “What’s Left of Us.”

Third Place was awarded to Alexandra Zlotnikov of Northport for her oil painting titled “Grand Russian Supper.”

Honorable mentions included Annissa Gao of Great Neck, for “On a Thread” (mixed media); Agata Arkhipkina of Stony Brook for “Light” (acrylic); and Christopher Lafontaine of Shirley for “Out of My Mind” created with a ballpoint pen.

This show will run through April 9. The exhibition hall is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Engineering Excellence award for Rocky Point Middle School

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Rocky Point Middle School robotics team had only one opportunity to compete this year, and they took full advantage. At the Long Island championships, pitted against more than 100 teams from across Long Island, the team and coach Mark Moorman again brought home a well-earned award.

Students Grace Bertino, Matt Blaising, Charlie Hinst, Nathan Watkis and Faith Wozny, who represent the Radical Robotix team, earned third place in the Engineering Excellence category. The award is noted as a celebration of a team with an efficiently designed robot, an innovative project solution that effectively addresses the season challenge and great core values evident in all they do.
