Morgan Stanley recently announced that Daniel R. Liff, a Managing Director, Financial Advisor in the Firm’s Hauppauge Wealth Management office and a resident of Setauket, has been named to Forbes Magazine’s 2023 list of Best-in-State Wealth Advisors.

Forbes’ Best-in-State Wealth Advisors list comprises a select group of individuals who have a minimum of seven years of industry experience. The ranking, developed by Forbes’ partner SHOOK Research, is based on an algorithm of qualitative and quantitative data, rating thousands of wealth advisors and weighing factors like revenue trends, AUM, compliance records, industry experience and best practices learned through telephone and in-person interviews.

The Port Jefferson Chamber of Comerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for Melinda Cantor Designs on May 2. Located at 903 Main Street, Suite 101, in Port Jefferson Village, the boutique stationery showroom/studio specializes in the design and printing of high quality wedding invitations. The occassion also marked the company’s 25th year in business.

It seems it was meant to be that Long Island restaurateur Terry Scarlatos and chef Scott Andriani would partner to open Revival by Toast at 242 E. Main St. in downtown Port Jefferson. 

They met 16 years ago at a home in Rocky Point, during a men’s night get-together. Scarlatos took his young son, Braedan, and Andriani brought 16 carefully-prepared sauces to complement the bear meat burgers, ostrich and whole spit-roasted pig.

Someone stumbled into the table, upending the sauces. Scarlatos was impressed with Andriani’s unflappable cool, taking the loss of his hard work so calmly. 

“With composure and grace, he handled it beautifully,” Scarlatos said, reflecting upon the long-ago incident. “I was like, that is the kind of guy I [want] to work with.” 

Port Jefferson apart, Scarlatos opened additional Toast locations in Patchogue and Bay Shore, developing another Toast location in Long Beach scheduled to open this Memorial Day. Andriani, meanwhile, was working in Spain, touring and learning the cuisines of Europe. He returned to the U.S. as an executive chef for a large corporate restaurant group.

As fate would have it, Andriani was preparing to leave the corporate world as Scarlatos was exploring ideas for using the lease he held for 242 E. Main. The original Toast Coffeehouse, having opened there in 2002, had been a fixture of the village restaurant scene before relocating to Port Jefferson Station in September 2022. 

Scarlatos sought to honor the old without repeating the same concept. With Andriani on board, a vision was born that paid homage to the previous Toast experience while offering patrons a new dining adventure.

The partners see Revival by Toast as an “upscale neighborhood restaurant,” an approachable venue that one can visit frequently.

Revival by Toast is set to feature produce at the peak of seasonal freshness with selective proteins. The majority of the ingredients will come from the tri-state area. Scarlatos and Andriani have sourced many of their ingredients from local purveyors, such as Indian Neck Farm, an organic, sustainable producer in Peconic on the North Fork. 

In keeping with the practice of using sustainable purveyors, Andriani endeavors to make his kitchen “a zero-waste kitchen.” He has created vegan menu items, such as Spanish vegan paella, so everyone at the table can enjoy it. 

Andriani sources the wagyu beef from Japan, Australia and specialty domestic herds in Texas. These ingredients are developed into both small-tasting dishes as well as full entrée plates. 

The seven-to-eight-course sampling menu provides flexibility in ordering and pricing for the patron. Dishes are modifiable to accommodate food allergies and individual preferences. 

Offerings rotate as often as every three days. Sunday brunch is lighter than the Toast menu diners are accustomed to ordering. The owners want to introduce the diner to food and beverage selections that are atypical of the current restaurant scene.

“You can come here with a date,” Andriani said. “You can spend a little more and get a little more. We take humble food and elevate it.”

Scarlatos and Andriani have stocked their boutique bar with an array of “thoughtfully sourced spirits” from small-batch vintners, brewers and distillers across the globe. The partners invite patrons to ask about their “hidden gems.”

Revival opens at 5 p.m. and closes at 11 p.m. from Wednesday through Saturday, serving brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. 

The official grand opening is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17, at 5:30 p.m., with Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and Village of Port Jefferson officials attending. 

Revival by Toast suggests reservations be made a week in advance. Four tables are held to accommodate walk-ins.

Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson has begun construction of a new $52 million, 26,000-square-foot Emergency Department that will maximize patient privacy and caregiver support, increase process efficiencies, and incorporate the best practices for patient safety. Ground was broken for the new facility on May 4. 

In recognition of the tremendous support to Mather Hospital from the Frey Family of Port Jefferson, the new facility will be named the Frey Family Emergency Department. The new Emergency Department will be double the size of Mather’s current Emergency Department and will create an environment that maximizes patient privacy and caregiver support, increases process efficiencies, and incorporates the best practices for patient safety.

“I’ve lived in the community since the 1960s. There have been countless times over the decades that Mather has provided excellent health care for our family and friends,” said Kathryn Frey, who also serves on Mather’s Advisory and Foundation Boards. “Everyone will benefit from our new expanded Emergency Department.”

“This is one of the most ambitious building projects in Mather Hospital’s history,” said Executive Director Kevin McGeachy. “We are re-imagining what emergency care can be for our community. The Emergency Department is our font door. More than three quarters of the patients who are admitted to Mather come in through our ED.” 

The new facility will be located on the north side of the hospital campus. It will feature individual private rooms and use a split-flow design that has proven to accelerate treatment and discharge of patients with lower-acuity conditions and speed hospital admissions for patients with higher-acuity conditions. The facility will include imaging services including X-ray, ultrasound, and CT technology; isolation rooms for infectious disease control; and a dedicated treatment area for those experiencing a mental health crisis. 

“Our new ED will provide a healing environment that meets the needs of our community when  they are experiencing an emergency: space for patients and their loved ones to be comfortable, privacy to allow clear communication with our healthcare providers, and a format that lets our staff work more efficiently so they can spend more time at the bedside,” said Adam Wos, MD, Director of Emergency Medicine at Mather.

Mather’s current Emergency Department sees almost 40,000 patients annually, making the new facility essential to the care of the community. The construction of the new Emergency Department is expected to be completed in 2025.

Cona Elder Law has announced Leigh-Anne Amore and Stephanie Gopen have joined the firm as Associate Attorneys in the Melville office.

Ms. Amore is admitted to the bar in New York and New Jersey and was named a Rising Star by Super Lawyers in 2022. She received her law degree from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 2011 and her undergraduate degree from State University of New York at Albany. Ms. Gopen is also licensed to practice law in New York and New Jersey. She received her law degree in 2013 from New York Law School  and her master’s degree in Taxation from New York Law School in 2020 and is a graduate of Binghamton University. Ms. Gopen previously was an associate at Cooperman Lester Miller Carus. and she resides in East Meadow.

Gurwin Healthcare System has announced the appointment of John P. Mastacciuola as Executive Director of Fountaingate Gardens, Gurwin’s new 129-apartment luxury Independent Living Community located on its 36-acre Commack campus. Mr. Mastacciuola will manage all day-to-day operations for the unique senior living Life Plan Community, which is designed for active adults age 62 and older.

Prior to joining Fountaingate Gardens, Mr. Mastacciuola served as Regional Director of Operations at Unidine, part of the Compass Group, where he oversaw dining and hospitality services for Gurwin’s nursing and rehabilitation center, assisted living and independent living communities.  A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Mr. Mastacciuola brings to his new role more than 25 years’ experience in the hospitality sector.

The Young Professionals Network (YPN) of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, one of the nation’s leading realtors and the top ranked luxury real estate organization serving Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens, recently held its First Annual Fundraiser. Held at The Inn at New Hyde Park, more than 200 enthusiastic networkers raised $35,000 for the Daniel Gale Foundation, a charitable organization wholly funded by donations from Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty real estate advisors, staff, management, senior executives and board members.

“I am elated, impressed and proud of our young professional group, who put together a wildly successful benefit event,” said Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty CEO Deirdre O’Connell, who was in attendance. “Not only did they raise a substantial sum of money for the Daniel Gale Foundation, they put on an outstanding networking event to the great benefit of all who attended.”

Kathleen McCarthy, a real estate advisor based out of the Bayside/Flushing and Garden City offices who serves on the advisory board of YPN, explained the significance of bringing together this group of young professionals and veteran real estate advisors. “Over the past three years, we’ve mostly operated in our own silos, meeting by zoom or in small group settings. Nothing matches the energy of getting together in a local venue while doing good. Our newer agents in particular were able to meet and learn from the top producing legacy agents in the room. These interactions are invaluable stepping stones to future success.”

YPN currently has between 30 to 40 active members and an advisory board of eight who plan quarterly events.  In addition to fundraising, YPN offers growth opportunities for its members in a supportive environment. One YPN member, for example, recently launched a podcast, which has since been shared among members and their networks. Members also share listings via Instagram and Facebook with a dedicated inbox.  “It’s all about relationship building, supporting our colleagues and referring business among one another,” added McCarthy.

Because of the generous contributions of event sponsors including Embrace Home Loans, Chase Home Lending, Citizen’s Bank, Wells Fargo, and Jon Pappas, 100 percent of ticket sales were donated to the Daniel Gale Foundation.

For the fifth year in a row, Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Community of South Setauket has earned Pinnacle Quality Insight’s Customer Experience Award for outstanding resident satisfaction and overall achievement in the health care industry.

Over the course of 2022, a sampling of residents of the Vincent Bove Health Center and their families participated in monthly telephone interviews that asked open-ended questions to rate their experiences in specific categories.    

Every month, Jefferson’s Ferry staff evaluated the results from the interviews to gain a better understanding of resident needs and make improvements when necessary. 

“In addition to the high marks our residents and their families give us in the Pinnacle survey, they also recommend Jefferson’s Ferry to their friends and family,” added Anthony Comerford, Vice President of Health Service. “Our staff and residents form close relationships based on mutual respect, trust, and quality care.”
