Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats stave off Bulls

Although the Wildcats of Shoreham-Wading River never trailed, they had their hands full holding off the Bulls of Smithtown West in a Division-II matchup at home at the Thomas Cutinella Memorial Field. Trading goals most of the way the Wildcats edged the Bulls, 11-9, April 2.

Senior midfielder Fransisco Cortes led the way for the Wildcats with four goals and three assists, and teammate Alec Gregorek netted four goals and one assist. Alec’s younger brother Liam Gregorek scored as did Tommy Palumbo and Steven Cain.

Smithtown West junior Will Fitzsimmons had two goals and two assists, Owen Ellick had an assist and three goals, and Ryan Trebing netted three.

The win lifts Shoreham-Wading River to 2-0 in the early going and Smithtown West is 1-1, 3-1 overall.

Both teams retake the field April 5 when the Wildcats hit the road with a game against Harborfields as Smithtown West travels to West Babylon. Both games face off at 5 p.m.

Port Jefferson Lady Royals fall to Babylon Eagles

Looking to build momentum after their victory over Stony Brook School three days earlier, the Lady Royals of Port Jefferson hit a roadblock Saturday morning when they hosted West Babylon.

In this first league game of the season, they fell to the Eagles 18-5. A young team that had only formed in 2017, the Port Jeff roster includes only four seniors, four sophomores and seven freshmen, who will be challenged in the Class D 2022 campaign. The Lady Royals retook the field on March 29 at home against the Smithtown West Bulls, where the Royals lost, 14-3.

Mount Sinai teachers meet in a ‘Battle of the Educators’

On Friday, March 25, the faculties of Mount Sinai middle and elementary schools took on their high school counterparts in a fundraising basketball exhibition. Billed as ‘The Battle of the Educators,’ the purpose of the fundraiser was to benefit the school district’s Booster Club. Almost two years since the event last took place due to the pandemic, the 19th edition of this local tradition was held before an enthusiastic crowd. There were T-shirt sales, halftime shooting contests and fun to go all around.

Northport Tigers maul William Floyd Colonials

The Northport Tigers boys lacrosse team opened their 2022 campaign with a road win against William Floyd in a 20-3 rout March 29. The Tigers held the Colonials scoreless through three quarters before the Northport coach pulled his starters for the final 12 minutes of play.

Mike Meyer topped the scoring charts for the Tigers with three goals and three assists. Teammate Timothy Kirschner netted one with four assists, Jack Helrigel found the net three times and Jacob Starcke stretched the net twice with one assist. Northport senior Tyler Kuprianchik owned the “X” winning 16 out of 16 faceoffs.

Northport retakes the field Friday, April 1, when they host Connetquot with a 5 p.m. start.

Port Jefferson Royals’ impressive season comes to an end

The Royals of Port Jefferson stayed just ahead of the Frogs of Carle Place on March 9 in the Class C Long Island Championship game at Shoreham-Wading River High School until halfway through the 3rd quarter when the Nassau champions tied the game at 28 all.

From there, Carle Place edged ahead with their surging defense controlling the boards and put the game away 55-44 to advance to the New York State regional finals Mar. 12.

Lola Idir topped the scoring chart for the Royals with 3 triples, 3 field goals and a pair of free throws for 17 points. Senior forward Abigail Rolfe scored 4 from the floor and was again perfect from the charity stripe — sinking 5 for 13 points — and senior Annie Maier nailed 3 triples and a field goal for 11. The Royals conclude their 2021-22 campaign with an impressive 17-4 record.

T-Birds too much for Northport Tigers

The Northport Tigers led by two points with 41 seconds left in the game but Half Hollow Hills East retied the game at 43 all with nine seconds left in the Suffolk County Class AA finals.

Northport senior Nick Watts got the inbound pass and let a three pointer fly that just rimmed out forcing overtime as the clock ran out. The T-Birds found their second wind in the in the final 90 seconds of the four-minute overtime period for a 56-50 victory at Smithtown East High School Mar. 5.

Watts led his team in scoring with five field goals, a three pointer and two free throws for 17 points and teammate Brendan Carr a junior sank five 3-pointers for 15 points.

Northport concludes their 2021-22 campaign with an impressive 21-3 record.

Longwood Lions tame Northport Tigers

The Tigers of Northport, the No. 2 seed, faced the top seeded Lions of Longwood, both teams with 12-1 winning records in the Class AA final at Smithtown East High School Mar. 5. The Tigers clung to a one-point lead in the closing minutes of the third quarter holding off the Lions 43-42, but Longwood found it’s legs in the final eight minutes of play to win the game, 65-54.

Northport senior Sophia Yearwood led her team in scoring, nailing five triples for 15 points,. Senior Allison Soule had six from the floor and a free throw for 13, and Kennedy Radziul, a sophomore, netted 11.

The win propels Longwood to the Section XI title game as the large school qualifier where they’ll face the small school winner, West Babylon, at their own home court Mar. 7.

Kings Park wins again

Win or lose, both Southampton and Kings Park would live to fight another day but the bragging rights for the Section XI small school championship was at stake. Kings Park with 23 wins without a loss this season had their hands full with the 20-2 Mariners, where both teams were deadlocked at 34 all in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

Senior Jon Borkowski provided the spark in the final eight minutes of play leading his team with 16 points to put the game away, 54-45. and with it advance to the Section XI championship title round where they’ll face the winner of the Hills East/Northport game.

Borkowski hit six field goals and four from the charity stripe of 16 points. Teammates AJ Petraitis banked 13 points and Andrew Plate netted eight.

The win propels the Kingsmen to the Section XI championship title round Monday Mar. 7 at Longwood High School. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here at https://gofan.co/app/school/NYSPHSAAXI.

The undefeated Kingsmen of Kings Park

The Kingsmen of Kings Park and the Deer Park Falcons were tied 25 all to open the second half in the Suffolk Class A final, but it was all Kings Park in the third quarter out scoring their opponent by 11 points and carried that moment in the final eight minutes of play to win the game, 60-52, at Longwood High School Mar. 1.

Junior Matthew Garside led the way with four triples, three field goals and three from the line for 21 points. Senior AJ Petraitis netted 16, and fellow senior Andrew Plate banked 15.

Kings Park has not lost a game this season as the win lifts them to 23-0, where they’ll look to carry that momentum into the Section XI small school championship game where they’ll face Southampton again at Longwood High School Mar. 4. Ward Melville Patriots fall to T-Birds

The Patriots of Ward Melville, after leading at one point by 12 points, clung to a 1-point lead to start the second half in a quarter-final playoff game on the road against Hills East Feb. 18.

With the game tied at 41 all to begin the final eight minutes of play, the T-Birds exploded in the fourth quarter putting the game out of reach for a 70-51 victory to advance to the semi-final round in Class AA.

Ward Melville senior Tommy Ribaudo led his team in scoring with six field goals and three from the line for 15 points. Teammate Frank Carroll, a senior, netted nine points and sophomore KJ Anderson banked seven.

The Patriots conclude their 21-22 campaign with an impressive 18-4 record.
