The Stony Brook football team opened up their 2024 season on Aug. 31 with FBS foe Marshall University, falling to the Herd 45-3 at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in West Virginia.

The Seawolves (0-1, 0-0 CAA) led the time of possession and ran more plays than the Herd, but were unable to capitalize as the Herd finished with a 549-252 advantage in total yards.

The quarterback duo of Tyler Knoop and Malachi Marshall made their first career appearances for Stony Brook and combined for 158 yards through the air. Knoop got the start for the Seawolves and went 8-of-13 with 62 passing yards, including a 32-yard highlight-play by Jayce Freeman. Marshall went 10-of-20 for 96 yards with an interception and 11 carries.

Freeman led the receiver room by tallying a team-high 52 yards on two catches. West Virginia native Chance Knox made his first career appearance with the Seawolves and had a team-best five receptions. RJ Lamarre and Cole Bunicci each had 25 receiving yards, respectively.

Roland Dempster and Brandon Boria split the majority of the carries, with Dempster gaining 37 yards on 13 carries while Boria gained a career-best 22 yards on eight attempts on the ground. Anthony Ferreli finished with a career-high 14 tackles on the defensive side for Stony Brook, four of them solo, and Chayce Chalmers also tallied a career-best 10 tackles, four of them solo as well. 

Rudy Silvera made his Stony Brook debut this evening and led the team with six solo tackles, finishing with 10 total. Clarens Legagneur recorded seven tackles, while AJ Roberts finished his night with six. Tyson McCloud recorded the first sack of the season for the Seawolves.

On special teams, Clayton Taylor hit nine punts for 392 yards, averaging 43.6 yards per kick and putting two punts inside the 20. Enda Kirby gave the Seawolves three points with a 39-yard field goal in the third quarter. 

“Overall I thought we started strong. I thought we came out with the right mindset. I thought we played hard, we played physical. I like the way our defense played, I thought they wore down as the game went. We were way better on defense than we have been in the past. They had some guys that can run and make plays, that showed up at times,” head coach Billy Cosh said. 

“Offensively, there were moments but we’ve got to be a little more consistent. I thought Malachi did a nice job bringing us a spark. He’s young and he’s going to be a really good player. I like our outfit, I like our team,” he added.

Up next, the team returns home for its 2024 home opener against Stonehill on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 3:30 p.m. at LaValle Stadium. To purchase season, single game, mini plans or group tickets, call 631-632-9653.

Stony Brook football redshirt freshman Anthony Johnson has received his second national award in as many weeks, as the wide receiver was named FCS Football Central Freshman All-American as published by The Bluebloods on Nov. 27.

Johnson adds to his postseason awards collection, which also includes a finalist selection for the Jerry Rice Award and Third Team All-CAA distinction.

He becomes the first player in school history to be selected as All-American by FCS Football Central and Stony Brook’s first wide receiver All-American since Kevin Norrell took the honor from three different outlets in 2012.

The Burlington, N.J. native found himself atop the freshman receiving charts with 714 yards (71.4/game) and 59 receptions (5.9/game), good for the top receiver in the FCS in both categories. He is also the Division I leader in receiving yards per game when combined with FBS receivers. Johnson averaged 12.1 yards per catch and scored three touchdowns this season.

After transferring from James Madison as a redshirt, he finished tied for sixth in Stony Brook single-season history in receptions, while recording at least five receptions in seven games, which had not been done by a Stony Brook receiver in eight years.

Johnson was named All-American on Monday among 49 players from 43 schools. He is one of 22 offensive players and one of five wide receivers to be selected as an All-American.

Stony Brook football closed its 2023 season on Nov. 11, finishing 0-10 overall after falling 38-20 to No. 18 UAlbany at LaValle Stadium. 

Redshirt freshman Daron Bryden led Stony Brook’s passing attack, finishing 21-of-31 for 208 yards through the air, tossing one touchdown without an interception, in his first start of the season.

Redshirt freshman Anthony Johnson reeled in six catches for 54 yards and a touchdown, while classmate Jayce Freeman contributed in the receiving game as well, hauling in three balls for 51 yards. Redshirt junior Ross Tallarico added a pair of catches for 32 yards.

In the rushing game, redshirt junior Roland Dempster led all Seawolves rushers with 46 yards in the contest.

On defense, graduate student Aidan Kaler finished with 10 tackles, adding a tackle for loss. Graduate student Quenton Porter marked his final game in a Stony Brook uniform with a career-high eight tackles, and tied a career-high with two pass breakups. Redshirt junior Clarens Legagneur recorded a 49-yard pick-six to go with five tackles and two TFLs.

For UAlbany, Reese Poffensbarger completed 20-of-28 passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns. Griffin Woodell led all rushers with 151 yards and a score. Brevin Easton caught six passes for 89 yards and a touchdown while Julian Hicks added six receptions for 62 yards and a pair of receiving touchdowns.

Before the game, three Stony Brook football student-athletes were honored for Senior Day – linebacker De’Aundre Cruz, offensive lineman D’Angelo McKinnie and defensive back Quenton Porter.

Stony Brook football was unable to stop a stout Monmouth offensive attack, falling 56-17 at Kessler Stadium in New Jersey on Nov. 4.

Stony Brook was led by season-best 141 rushing yards along with a score from redshirt junior Roland Dempster on a career-high 22 carries, averaging 6.4 per carry. Classmate Jadon Turner added 50 yards on 10 carries and while redshirt junior Jayden Cook provided Stony Brook’s other rushing score.

In the air, redshirt freshman Jayce Freeman caught four passes for 50 yards while fellow redshirt freshman Anthony Johnson finished with three catches for 33 yards. In the passing game, graduate student Casey Case went 9-of-17 for 79 yards and an interception, while redshirt freshman Daron Bryden took over in the second half, finishing 4-for-8 for 43 yards.

On defense, redshirt junior Nick Chimienti recorded nine tackles with eight solo stops on the day. Redshirt junior De’Aundre Cruz added seven tackles from the linebacker position. Stony Brook also got a big day on the line from redshirt sophomore Anthony Williams, who finished with 2.0 sacks and five tackles overall.

For Monmouth, Jaden Shirden rushed for 174 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns. Marquez McCray finished 22-of-27 passing for 323 yards and four touchdowns, all to different receivers. Dymere Miller led the receiving corps with 11 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown.

“We’ve got a great group of kids who keep on rallying despite our inability to execute at times. They haven’t quit and I’m proud of them from that perspective. We’ve faced some adversity as a program with some key injuries, but the kids that have stepped in have really stepped in well,” said head coach Chuck Priore.

The team returns home for the season finale on Saturday, Nov. 11 in the Battle for the Golden Apple against Albany for a 1 p.m. kick off on FloFootball. Next week’s contest will be senior day, as Stony Brook will honor its graduating football student-athletes pregame. Stony Brook is 10-14 all-time against the Great Danes.

Stony Brook football fell on the road in its Week 9 matchup, dropping a 48-13 decision to No. 19 at Villanova Stadium in PA on Oct. 28 against the Wildcats.

Stony Brook was led by redshirt freshman Anthony Johnson, who pulled in a career-high 11 catches for 90 yards. Redshirt sophomore Dez Williams and redshirt junior Jayden Cook each grabbed a receiving touchdown on Saturday.

Redshirt junior Roland Dempster led Stony Brook on the ground, running for 55 yards on 12 carries, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. Redshirt junior Ross Tallarico added 24 yards on six carries whilde redshirt freshman Johnny Martin added 23 yards on seven carries.

In the pass game, graduate student Casey Case completed 12-of-22 passes for 113 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Redshirt freshman Daron Bryden finished 10-of-15 passes and added a touchdown.

Defensively, graduate student Aidan Kaler finished with seven tackles, three of them solo. Redshirt sophomore Jalen Hoyle and redshirt freshman Wilensky Nicolas each added five stops, while redshirt junior Brandon Higgs added four tackles and a fumble recovery on special teams.

For Villanova, Connor Watkins completed 13 passes for 364 yards and four passing scores. In the air, Rayjuon Pringle, Jaaron Hayek and Jaylen Sanchez each hit 100 yards and caught at least a touchdown pass, with Hayek catching two. Pringle led in receiving yards with 196. Three different rushers finished with touchdowns, with Jalen Jackson leading the way with 77 yards.

“Disappointed with the final score. Our kids are competing and they’re prepared, but the performances haven’t been there. My job is to figure out how to get the performances to match, as the Saturdays haven’t been indicative of the work they players have put in Sunday through Friday,” said head coach Chuck Priore.

Up next, the team will play its final road game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 4, taking on Monmouth for a 1 p.m. kick on FloFootball. The Seawolves are 3-5 all-time against Monmouth, with a 2-2 record in New Jersey.

Stony Brook football got a pair of 100-yard receiving performances, but dropped a 45-14 decision to New Hampshire in its annual homecoming game at LaValle Stadium on Oct. 21.

Graduate student Casey Case finished 18-for-29 in the passing game for 255 yards and a touchdown, doing so without an interception. Redshirt freshman Jayce Freeman grabbed two catches for 115 yards and a touchdown, while classmate Anthony Johnson added nine grabs for 101 yards to lead the way in the pass-catching department for Stony Brook.

Redshirt junior Jadon Turner paced the Seawolves rushing attack with 32 yards on five carries, averaging 6.4 yards per carry. Redshirt junior Roland Dempster added 24 yards and one touchdown on the afternoon.

On defense, redshirt senior De’Aundre Cruz led Stony Brook with 10 tackles, including nine solo stops. Redshirt freshman Willensky Nicolas added eight tackles, including seven solo stops, while graduate student Aidan Kaler also totaled eight tackles. Redshirt sophomore Rodney Faulk picked up 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sack, totaling three tackles.

For New Hampshire, Max Brosmer completed 28-of-40 passes for 335 yards and four touchdowns, each to different receivers. Dylan Laube led UNH with 42 rushing yards, and totaled 149 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns on the game. Laube, Caleb Burke, Joey Corcoran, and Colby Ramshaw all caught a touchdown pass, with Corcoran leading the way with 76 receiving yards.

All told, New Hampshire held the total offense advantage, 470-363.

The team will head on the road to face Villanova on Oct. 28, with kickoff slated for 2 p.m. on FloSports.

After a stout defensive effort in which the Seawolves forced five turnovers, Richmond mounted an 11-play, 57-yard drive, culminating in a 28-yard field goal with 46 seconds remaining, as Stony Brook football fell in a tough 20-19 decision to Richmond at LaValle Stadium on Sept. 23.

Four players — redshirt junior Nick Chimienti, redshirt sophomore Jalen Hoyle, graduate student Quenton Porter and redshirt junior JuJu Ganthier each recorded interceptions, with Ganthier’s resulting in a 59-yard pick-six. Redshirt junior Taylor Bolesta forced a fumble that was recovered by redshirt sophomore Rodney Faulk for the fifth takeaway. Graduate student Aidan Kaler finished with a career-high 14 tackles including seven solo stops.

Redshirt sophomore Shakhi Carson paced the Seawolves’ rushing attack with 40 yards on the ground, while redshirt junior Ross Tallarico added 38 yards on four rushes, averaging 9.5 yards per carry. On the receiving end, redshirt freshman Anthony Johnson pulled in three catches for 49 yards and one score. Quarterback Casey Case finished 11-for-22 for 154 yards and the touchdown to Johnson.

Amidst tough kicking conditions, junior Spencer Biscoe went 2-for-2 on field goals while sophomore Clayton Taylor put a pair of punts inside the Richmond 5-yard line.

For Richmond, Savon Smith carried 22 times for 106 yards and a touchdown while Nick DeGennaro caught four passes for 86 yards and a score. Richmond won the ground game, 195-96.

The team is back on the road for the next two weeks, and will close the month of September with a matchup against the  Maine Black Bears (0-4, 0-2) on Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m. on FloSports.

Stony Brook put forth a valiant effort after trailing by as many as 17 points, but ultimately fell to Monmouth, 24-21, in the 2022 season finale at Kessler Stadium on Nov. 19.

The Hawks took a 17-0 lead before Stony Brook was able to get on the board. With 3:55 to play in the first half graduate defensive back Carthell Flowers-Lloyd stepped in front of a screen and picked off a pass by Monmouth’s Enzo Arjona and returned it for a touchdown. Flowers-Lloyd’s interception was the first of his career and it swung the momentum in Stony Brook’s favor heading into the second half.

After Monmouth and Stony Brook traded punts to start the second half, the Seawolves cut the Hawks’ lead to 17-14 after a 66-yard touchdown run by redshirt sophomore running back Ross Tallarico with 5:02 to play in the third quarter. Tallarico took the carry up the middle and rushed untouched into the end zone for the longest rush of his career.

The Seawolves continued to apply the pressure on the defensive end and that pressure resulted in a sack-fumble by graduate defensive end Eric Black. Black blew past Monmouth’s offensive line to strip-sack Arjona and redshirt junior linebacker Aidan Kaler recovered the fumble.

 On Stony Brook’s ensuing drive redshirt freshman quarterback Daron Bryden found Tallarico for a five-yard touchdown pitch and catch to give the Seawolves’ a 21-17 lead with 8:17 to play in the game. For Tallarico, it was his second touchdown of the game.

Monmouth took the lead, 24-21, with 7:32 to play when Arjona found Dymere Miller for a 72-yard touchdown and held on to win by that very score.

“I am really proud of how we competed. We’ve had a lot of adversity in regards to being a better football team; but our kids competed. Offensively, we were not able to generate much throughout the game. The parts kept on plugging, our defense made some stops, and we were able to convert some things. If you’re in the game in the fourth quarter, you got to try to find a way to win,” said coach Priore on his reaction to Saturday’s game.

The Stony Brook football team used a dramatic second half comeback to defeat Maine, 28-27, and secured a win on Homecoming, Oct. 22. The Seawolves were led by freshman quarterback Charlie McKee who helped Stony Brook outscore Maine, 21-7, in the second half en route to victory.

The team open the second half by forcing a three and out. On the ensuing drive, the Seawolves marched right down the field and McKee found redshirt sophomore wide receiver RJ Lamarre for a 10-yard touchdown pitch and catch to cut Maine’s lead to 20-14.

The Black Bears responded by punching right back with a touchdown of their own as Elijah Barnwell found the end zone from 12 yards out to put Maine ahead once again by two scores, 27-14. From that point forward, Stony Brook closed the door and went on to score 14 unanswered points to secure the 28-27 win.

After Maine’s score in the third quarter, the Seawolves put together an 11-play, 75-yard drive to punch in their third touchdown of the night. The drive was capped off by McKee finding redshirt junior tight end Tyler Devera from a yard out to make it 27-21.

Stony Brook was knocking on the door, with the momentum shifting in the favor of Long Island’s team following Devera’s touchdown. The Seawolves seized full momentum in the game when they picked up a crucial fourth down stop with 8:32 to play in the contest.

Redshirt junior defensive back Shamel Lazarus and graduate linebacker Reidgee Dimanche stuffed Maine’s Kobay White who caught a pass near the line of scrimmage, the Stony Brook duo blew up the play in the backfield and forced a turnover on downs.

McKee led the Seawolves’ offense right down the field as he orchestrated a seven-play, 68-yard drive that resulted in graduate wide receiver Khalil Newton hauling in what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with a miraculous seven-yard touchdown catch.

Maine had one last crack at it, but the Seawolves’ defense stood strong as they forced Cole Baker to miss what would have been the go-ahead field goal from 46 yards out.

The team is back on the gridiron on Oct. 29, when they travel up north to face UAlbany in the battle for the Golden Apple.

The Stony Brook University football team (4-5, 3-3 CAA) used a gritty road performance to pick up its third consecutive win as it defeated Maine (4-5, 3-4 CAA), 22-17, on Nov. 6. The Seawolves were paced by an all-around team effort as they picked up their first CAA road victory of the season.

Redshirt junior running back Ty Son Lawton and redshirt sophomore kicker Angelo Guglielmello accounted for all of Stony Brook’s scoring in the win. Lawton found the end zone twice (one rushing touchdown, one receiving touchdown), while Guglielmello made a career-high three field goals.

As Maine fought back in the second half, Stony Brook’s defense stood strong as it shut down the come-from-behind effort. The Black Bears got the ball back with 2:30 to play in the game and had a chance to potentially take the lead. On the first play of the drive, redshirt freshman linebacker Tyler King stepped in front of a Derek Robertson pass for his first career interception. King’s interception sealed the victory for the Seawolves.

The Seawolves used a strong first half performance to take a 16-7 lead at the break. Stony Brook controlled the pace of play and dominated in total offense and time of possession. The Seawolves outgained the Black Bears 250 yards to 89 yards and held the ball for 21:57, while Maine had the ball for 8:03 in the first half.

Redshirt sophomore kicker Angelo Guglielmello was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts in the first half. The Nutley, N.J. native opened the scoring for Stony Brook as he drilled a career-long 38-yard field goal with 8:47 to play in the first quarter. He then split the uprights with a 37-yard field goal to put Stony Brook up, 6-0, with 1:36 to go in the first quarter. Guglielmello’s third field goal in the first half came from 30 yards out and pushed the Seawolves’ lead to 16-0.

Lawton found the end zone twice in the win, once on the ground, and the other came on a catch. The redshirt junior extended the Seawolves’ first half lead to 13-0 on a nine-yard touchdown run. Lawton took a handoff and rushed right where he was met by a crowd of Black Bear defenders; he reversed field and saw nothing but green as he rushed into the end zone for the ninth time this season.

The Staten Island native scored his second touchdown of the day with 10:47 to play in the fourth quarter. Graduate quarterback Tyquell Fields found Lawton coming out of the backfield for a nine-yard touchdown reception.

“We lost three league games with the ball in our hands on fourth down in position to score, two of them to win, the other to continue the game. Our guys kept on fighting and believing. We weren’t getting turnovers; we got them (today) – obviously Tyler’s interception makes a difference in the last drive when they got the ball back. Good character guys, good senior leadership. It proves to you that the margin of winning and losing is very close,” said head coach Chuck Priore.

Up next, the team is back on the gridiron on Nov. 13, when they travel to nationally ranked Villanova for a 1 p.m. kick-off. The Seawolves are (2-1) against the Wildcats over their last three meetings and picked up a win in their last contest at Villanova, 36-35, on October 26, 2019. The game is set to air on FloFootball.
