Shoreham Wading River at 9-1 had a score to settle when they faced Bayport in the Suffolk County D-IV championship at the Kenneth P. Lavalle stadium Nov. 19.
Bayport, the only team that beat the Wildcats in week 6 of the regular season, seemed to have the measure of the Wildcats in the closing minutes of the game with four-point lead.
With 1:11 left on the clock and the hopes of another Suffolk Div IV championship fading, the Wildcats found themselves deep in their own territory when quarterback Dylan Zahn hit wide receiver Liam Leonard on a 33-yard pass who turned on the jets to go 71 yards for the TD to put the Wildcats out front for the 26-23.
Bayport didn’t go quietly throwing to the endzone in the final three plays of the game but the Wildcats defense held for the 26-23 win and with it advance to the Long Island Championship game.
Senior running-back Max Barone found the endzone three times rushed for 126 yards on 28 carries in the win. The Wildcats are back at Lavalle Stadium Nov. 27 where they’ll face North Shore. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

When Center Moriches the No. 8 seed met Shoreham-Wading River the No. 1 seed in the opening round of the football playoff season, the results were predictable.
But the Red Devils ran into a freight train Friday night at Thomas A Cutinella Memorial Field when the Wildcats crushed their visitors 70-13.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was freshman Will Hart who found the endzone four times, seniors Max Barone scored three with teammate Liam Leonard punching in twice.
Ryan Herr the junior rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats who are now 8-1 and will host the semi-final round Nov. 12.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online at gofan.co/app/school/NYSPHSAAXI for $8 or $10 at the door.
Annual Patriot Run in honor of Thomas Cutinella Oct 24. Bill Landon photo
Under bright sunshine the Shoreham Wading River Wildcat Athletic Club sponsored another edition of the annual Patriot Run in honor of Thomas Cutinella, a 16-year-old from Shoreham/Wading River High School, who died in 2014 after collapsing during a football game following a collision with an opponent.
The 2.54 mile run at Wildwood State Park in Wading River kicked off with a performance by Season 19 winner of “The Voice” Carter Rubin with a stirring rendition of our National Anthem.
The fundraiser and all proceeds go to the Thomas Cutinella Memorial Foundation which funds local scholarships.

Shoreham-Wading River running back Max Barone was a one-man wrecking crew as the senior powered his way in to the endzone five times in the Wildcats season opener 42-7 victory at Port Jefferson in a league IV matchup Sept 11.
The Royals struggled to find traction until late in the 3rd quarter when senior line-backer John Sheils recovered a Wildcat fumble and punched in for the Royals’ lone touchdown on the day. Port Jeff senior Kyle Yannucci’s kick was good to trail 35-7.
Will Hart, the freshman running-back for the Wildcats, found the end-zone midway through the 4th quarter and Ryan Farron’s foot drilled the uprights for the final score. Farron was perfect on the day nailing all six extra points.
The Royals look to regroup when they retake the field in a road game against Greenport/Southold/Mattituck Sept 17. Kick is at 6 p.m.
The Wildcats are back in action at home to take on Miller Place Sept 18 with a 1 p.m. start.

More than 140 students filled their summer mornings with athletics, crafts, friends and games at the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District’s 2021 Summer Round-Out Program, which has been offering summer activities to students for close to four decades.
The program, grouped by age and held at Miller Avenue School, enabled students to participate in creative art projects, outdoor sports and themed activities, with high school and college students working as their counselors. Directors Dylan Busch and Bob Szymanski made certain the diverse opportunities for the students were geared to further develop social, recreational and educational skills in a safe and fun environment.
Many of the counselors were former campers including recent graduates Meghan Klotz and Emma Longboat, who both shared that they enjoy witnessing the new friendships formed among the younger students.
Suffolk County police officers and Wading River Fire Department members rescued a woman who was in distress while swimming in the Long Island Sound in Shoreham on Sunday, July 18.
A woman called 911 to report that her friend, Johanna Scheiber, was swimming in the Long Island Sound and the caller, who was on Shoreham Beach, lost sight of Scheiber at approximately 6:50 a.m.
Marine Bureau Officer Gregory Stroh, 7th Precinct police officers and members of the Aviation Section responded. Seventh Precinct officers interviewed the caller and directed the police helicopter to the search area.
Aviation Section Sergeant John Vahey, Officer David Rosante and Stony Brook University Hospital Flight Paramedic Chris Barnes, who were in the police helicopter, located Scheiber in the water approximately one-mile offshore and Barnes and Rosante dropped floatation devices from the helicopter to the swimmer.
Members of the Wading River Fire Department responded on a boat and transported the victim to shore. Scheiber, 21, of Sayville, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats saw a three-goal lead evaporate just before the half and had to claw their way back from five unanswered goals by Bayport-Blue Point in the Class C semi-final round at home June 12.
Claw their way back they did, with just over 2 minutes remaining when Alec Gregorek scored his 5th goal of the game to tie the score at 10-10 forcing a four-minute overtime period. It was Bayport’s Gavin Locascio’s stick that put an end to the Wildcat’s season when he buried his shot two minutes into the overtime period for a 11-10 victory.
Shoreham-Wading River concludes their Covid-19 shortened 2021 campaign at 13-2.
