This 2024 holiday season at the Jazz Loft will have you thinking “Do I really need to go into New York City to feel holiday magic?” The answer is “NO!”

This year The Jazz Loft in Stony Brook Village will be presenting six performances of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, one of the most often performed Jazz versions of the holiday classic. The show will feature The Jazz Loft’s 17-piece Big Band, led by Tom Manuel; narrator and vocals by Danny Bacher.

On Sunday, December 22., The Jazz Loft will present two Jazz Nativity shows at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. This candlelight Jazz service will feature the Biblical Christmas story with Jazz sextet and Metropolitan Opera soprano Susanna Phillips. This performance will include an impressive lineup of jazz artists teamed up with guest narrators who will share the classic biblical Christmas story. Journey with the Three Wise Men as they travel to Bethlehem, join Mary and Joseph as they follow the Star and celebrate the birth of Baby Jesus.

On December 23, Grammy-winner singer and Jazz Loft favorite Nicole Zuraitis’ Jazz Christmas Party comes back to the venue. Zuraitis appears backed by a big band ensemble to present classic holiday chestnuts.

The 17-piece big band co-directed by Joe Devassy, trombone & Gary Henderson, trumpet is a Jazz Loft tradition. This is a wonderful concert to introduce live Jazz to children and grandchildren. It’s a holiday family affair! $40 adults, $35 seniors, $30 students. And $25 for children.

The Jazz Loft

The Jazz Loft, 275 Christian Ave., Stony Brook will present three special performances of Duke Ellington’s Far East Suite on Thursday, July 11, Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13. All three concerts begin at 7 p.m.

The Far East Suite is a 1967 concept album by Ellington, inspired by his group’s 1963 tour of Asia. Ellington and longtime collaborator Billy Strayhorn wrote the compositions. The album won the Grammy Award in 1968. The concerts are sponsored in part by the Olivia and Harlan Fischer Concert series and a grant from New York State Council on the Arts.

“Here at the Jazz Loft, we are always striving to bring our audience unique and significant works of Jazz and to keep those works alive and well,” said Tom Manuel, founder of the Jazz Loft. “Duke Ellington’s Far East Suite is the result of an ambitious tour that the band undertook in 1963. Syria was Duke’s first stop on a State Department sponsored “hearts and minds” tour of the Near and Middle East and India that took the band to Jordan, Afghanistan, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, and Turkey in no particularly sensible order. Ellington’s ability to communicate points of contact and conflict between cultures, assimilating the blues to Eastern modes… never sounds unduly self-conscious. This remains a post-war peak and we are excited to be sharing this work nearly 60 years after it won a Grammy award for the album it produced.”

Jon De Lucia

Saxophonist Jon De Lucia brings Brubeck’s music to life with his ‘Brubeck Octet Project’ 

The Jazz Loft, 275 Christian Ave., Stony Brook will present saxophonist Jon De Lucia and his all-star New York City Jazz octet in concert on Friday, June 28 at 7 p.m. for a tribute to legendary jazz visionary Dave Brubeck. Brubeck was one of the most famous and prolific jazz musicians of the 20th century. Brubeck “Restored and Reimagined” is the result of years of archival work by De Lucia, who has brought Brubeck’s arrangements back to life for the first time since the 1950s. The Brubeck Octet Project will be performing songs from De Lucia’s latest album, The Brubeck Octet Project, which will be released on July 12, 2024, with CD’s available for sale at the performance.

“The impact Dave Brubeck had on Jazz is astounding,” said Jazz Loft founder Tom Manuel. “His long and successful career and life well lived made an indelible mark on how we communicate this music. To be able to hear again what Dave was composing in the vein of the west coast/cool Jazz scene is something really exciting. This is going to be a performance not to be missed!”

The Brubeck Octet features Jon De Lucia, Tenor Saxophone; Jay Rattman – Alto Saxophone; Becca Patterson – Trombone; Andrew Hadro – Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone; Glenn Zaleski – Piano; Daniel Duke – Bass; and Keith Balla – Drums.

Offering four Tuesday evenings of music on the lawn

The Jazz Loft, 275 Christian Ave., Stony Brook, in partnership with Stony Brook University, Stony Brook Medicine and community businesses will present the 2024 Summer Stage With A Purpose (Summer SWAP), on a series of Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. The events are FREE to the community. 

Summer SWAP will offer visitors a relaxing and scenic outdoor venue on the front lawn of the Jazz Loft to listen to an impressive lineup of performers.

“This series was born from the desire to have the Jazz Loft collaborate with Stony Brook University, and Stony Book Medicine as a way to invest in the community and especially to nurture cultural development,” said Jazz Loft founder Tom Manuel.

“This summer concert series was born from the desire to give back to our community, to offer high quality performances to everyone without charge, and also to expand our collaborative projects with Stony Brook University, and Stony Book Medicine,” said Tom Manuel, founder of The Jazz Loft. “Summer SWAP is the perfect way to invest in our community and an especially real and genuine way to nurture cultural development.”

The Jazz Loft will be offering a variety of refreshments for sale in the Basie Garden which is adjacent to the Jazz Loft. Attendees are welcome to bring their own chairs and blankets to set up on the lawn.

Alto Jazz saxophonist and composer Charlie Parker broke all the rules of Jazz when he recorded two albums entitled Charlie Parker with Strings, works that attempted to bridge the gap between Jazz and classical music. Nothing like Strings had ever been done before. History has proven Parker’s instincts correct, as these works are now universally recognized as masterpieces.

Jazz enthusiasts will have three opportunities to catch performances of the iconic Charlie Parker with Strings on Thursday, April 4 and Saturday, April 6 at The Jazz Loft, 275 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook; and on Friday, April 5 at The Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University, 100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook. All three concerts will begin at 7 p.m. and will be featuring Chris Donohue and Dayna Sean Stephens, both on alto saxophone.

Parker fans can also take in The Jazz Loft’s new Charlie “The Bird” Parker collection of more than 50 memorabilia items from the Jazz great. The collection includes master acetates from some of his most important recording sessions; a personalized instrument case; his union card; numerous notes, letters and correspondence; and his Birdland contracts. Some of the correspondence documents his challenge with the union as he often had his union card revoked for drug offenses. The letters, from him, his agents, promoters, and friends, show Parker’s struggle to stay clean and work. Parker struggled with a heroin addiction and died at the age of 34.

The items were purchased at a Christie’s of London auction which showcased a vast collection of music memorabilia belonging to the late Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts. Watts, who had been a beloved member of the Stones since 1963, passed away in August 2021.

Ticket prices for all events are $40 for adults; $35 for seniors; $30 for students and $25 for children.

The Jazz Loft’s All Star Quartet will be premiering a performance of an original composition by Jazz Loft founder Thomas Manuel. The performance will take place on Tuesday, August 8, at 5 p.m. as part of the Art and Outreach Program at the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics (SCGP) at Stony Brook University. The performance at the SCGP is free and open to the public.

The performance will be a concert that celebrates The Great American Songbook and features compositions by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harry Warren, and many others. Manuel’s all-star quartet will feature Larry Fuller on piano; Dean Johnson on Bass; and Dan Pugach on drums.

Fuller is an internationally-acclaimed jazz pianist based in New York. Fuller performs in a mainstream jazz style and is also the leader of the “Larry Fuller Trio.” Johnson is a bassist who has performed and recorded with groups such as the Pual Jost Quartet and worked on projects with Roseanna Vitro and Bill Mays. Pugach is a Grammy-nominated drummer and composer who lives in Brooklyn, New York. He is also the leader of The Dan Pugach Nonet, a nine-piece ensemble that plays original music and arrangements by Pugach.

“I am thrilled to be returning to the Simons Center with such an incredible lineup of musicians,” Manuel states. “I welcome this chance to be blessed with the chance to perform alongside some of the greats! This quartet features some of the biggest names in Jazz today and the concert promises to be a joyous, celebratory swingin’ romp!”

Grammy Nominee and world class violinist Sara Caswell and her quartet will be performing music from her new album The Way to You at the Jazz Loft on Friday, May 19 at 7 p.m.

Caswell will be performing with Jesse Lewis, guitar; Adam Cruze, drums; and Ike Sturm, bass.

“Sara Caswell and her quartet will certainly be filling the Jazz Loft with exceptional music” said Jazz Loft founder Tom Manuel. “I hope everyone will come out to help celebrate the release of her new album.”

Caswell has been voted into the DownBeat Critics and Readers Polls every year since 2013. The album features the stellar band that Caswell has led for the past decade.

The Jazz Loft, 275 Christian Ave., Stony Brook presents jazz fusionist trombonist Ray Anderson on Friday, April 28 at 7 p.m.

Anderson’s performance is part of the launching of the Jazz Loft’s new Institute for New Music, an affiliate of the Jazz Loft, which will serve as an “musical and artistic incubator” by providing time and space to new artists in a supportive setting.

“It is wondrous that the Institute for New Music will open at this time, for this is a time when the need for new music has never been greater,” said Anderson. “Situated in the Three-Village area of Long Island, close to the famous Jazz Loft and Stony Brook University, it will bring peace, harmony, diversity, and creativity from this corner of Long Island to the world.”

Anderson was once dubbed “the wild man of the trombone” by the L.A. Times and has been named five straight years as best trombonist in the Down Beat Critics Poll. He has been declared “the most exciting slide brass player of his generation” by the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD.

Anderson is a Professor of Jazz Studies in the Music Department at nearby Stony Brook University where he has been on the faculty for 16 years.

The Ray Anderson Ensemble features: Ray Anderson, trombone; Mark Helias, bass; and Moshe Elmakias, piano.

“We’ve welcomed some incredible talent at the Loft these past few years,” said Jazz Loft Founder Tom Manuel, “but I can think of no one more creative, more dynamic, more authentically real in transmitting his musical voice than Ray Anderson. There is an incredibly transcendent spirit of love and acceptance when he performs and those who are lucky enough to be present leave uplifted and moved for sure!”

Warren Vaché

The Jazz Loft, 275 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook welcomes back Jazz trumpet player Warren Vaché and his Quartet on Thursday, March 9 at 7 p.m. Joining Vaché will be Dean Johnson (bass), Dan Pugach (drums), and Wayne Sabella (piano).

Vaché is known to span across multiple styles of Jazz and has played in polka bands, Dixieland bands, big dance bands, Broadway pit bands, small Jazz groups and more. He studied with trumpeter Pee Wee Erwin and has a degree in music education from Montclair State College. Absorbing all types of music, Vaché’s inspirations and heroes include Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, Bobby Hackett, Fats Navarro, Tom Harrell, and others.

Vaché commonly dueted with saxophonist Houston Person, who has been a frequent performer at the Jazz Loft. His career has been filled with countless performances such as with Benny Goodman’s band, making film appearances, composing soundtracks, and presently has a busy schedule of recording, worldwide festival appearances, club dates, Broadway shows, and is a dedicated educator and author. In his 40-year career, he has released over 35 albums as a band leader and appeared in many other musician’s recordings as a sideman.

“We are thrilled to have Warren Vaché once again perform again at the Jazz Loft,” says President and Founder Tom Manuel. “It’s a unique opportunity for Jazz Loft fans to hear a true legend.”

Displayed in the museum is a Warren Vaché exhibit that guests can view.
