The Ward Melville Patriots girls volley program has not meet defeat five games into the 2022 season. The team and made it 6-0, defeating Bellport at home with a 3-0 sweep in a League IV matchup Sept. 21.

Senior Mackenzie Heaney notched 34 assists, and senior Gianna Hogan had 16 digs in the sweep, where the Patriots prevailed 25-14, 25-21 and 25-22. The win keeps the Patriots atop the leaderboard in their league. They will retake the court Friday Sept. 23 with a 5 p.m. road game against Newfield and compete in tournament play the following day at Smithtown West High School. First service is scheduled for 8 a.m.

The Newfield Wolverines had their hands full with crosstown rival Centereach during a League IV girls volleyball matchup Thursday, Sept. 15. 

Both teams at 0-2 looked to notch their first win of this early season. Newfield would have to wait another day as the visiting Cougars never let up, sweeping their hosts in three games 25-10, 25-13, 25-14.

Senior Emma Tsaknakis and junior Mackenzie Marquardt teamed up for 15 kills between them. Senior Kate Timarky had 33 digs and Leah Kaplan, also a senior, notched 12 assists. 

Both teams retake the court Monday, Sept. 19. Centereach will be seeking its second straight win when the team travels to Longwood, and Newfield hopes to get its first win in a road game against Walt Whitman. First service is 5:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively.

Last year’s League II powerhouse Smithtown East came knocking on Ward Melville’s door in the opening round of the 2022 campaign in which both teams lost just one game last season. The Bulls of Smithtown East finished at 10-1 in league last season, and the Patriots went 11-1 which set the tone in the first set. 

Both teams stayed within three points of one another in the opening game that required the Patriots to win by two with a 27-25 victory. The second round saw both teams swapping the lead several times but the Patriots were able hold off the charging Bulls to take the second set 25-23. The Patriots stretched their legs in the third set breaking out to an 8-point lead thanks in part to a strong performance from the service line winning it 25-16 for the sweep at home Sept. 2. 

Both teams are back in action Sept. 7 when Ward Melville travels to Bay Shore for non-league game at 4:15 p.m., and Smithtown East travels to Centereach with a 4 p.m. start.

It was a see-saw battle in the first two sets between cross-town rivals Mount Sinai and Port Jefferson on Tuesday, Aug. 30. 

While the Mustangs kept it close in both sets, the Royals, fueled by Erin Henry’s dominant performance from the service line, finished strong and won both. 

Mount Sinai rallied in the third set, but the Royals played mistake-free volleyball and swept the match 25-21, 25-22, 25-15 in the opening round of this non-league matchup.

Both teams begin league play Thursday, Sept. 1. Mount Sinai hosts Center Moriches at 5 p.m. and the Royals travel to Pierson/Bridgehampton with a 6:15 p.m. start time.

The Patriots of Ward Melville, the No.3 seed in girls volleyball, enjoyed a bye week in the Class AA playoff bracket when they faced Connetquot, the No. 6 seed, at home Oct. 27.

The rest didn’t help as the T-Birds eliminated Ward Melville in three straight sets. The Patriots led by eight points in the opener before Connetquot nipped away and tied the game at 14 before winning it, 25-23. The Patriots fell flat in the second match falling, 25-14,  and staring at the brink of elimination. The T-Birds finished what they started by winning the third set, 25-21, to advance to the semi-final round Oct. 29.

Ward Melville concluded their 2021 campaign with a 11-1 League I record and 14-2 overall.

The Miller Place Panthers traveled to Wildcat country to take on Shoreham-Wading River in a non-league matchup Oct. 4 looking to sweep the Wildcats in three. 

Miller Place won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21 hoping for an early night, but the Wildcats had other ideas, stealing game three 25-22 forcing a game four. 

Shoreham-Wading River took the fourth set 25-18 to even the score for a game deciding fiftth set. The Panthers struggled to stay ahead but Shoreham-Wading River slammed the door winning the tie breaker 25-22. 

Kelsey Hughes the junior led the way for the Wildcats with 8 kills, teammates Paige Alessi and Morgan Truesdell had 5 kills apiece followed by Ella Marcario who killed 4. 

The win lifts the Wildcats to 4-6 overall and the loss drops the Panthers to 4-7. The Wildcats retook the court Oct. 6 at home against Southampton at 4:30p.m, and the Panthers host East Hampton Oct. 8 with a 6:30 start.

The Lady Royals of Port Jeff remained perfect on their season with a three-game sweep Oct. 1 over visiting Greenport/Southold, 25-22, 25-12 & 25-7. 

The win lifts the Royals to 7-0 to sit atop the league VI leaderboard just beyond the midway point of the season.

Ward Melville (No. 4 seed) had their work cut out for them in the Class AA semi-final round on the road against (No. 1) Smithtown West, and the Bulls showed why they’re undefeated this season in a game that should’ve gone beyond three sets. It didn’t. The Bulls blanked the Patriots in a sweep, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20, April 22.

Ward Melville concludes their season with an impressive 13-4 record in league.

Smithtown West’s Hannah Naja had six digs, four aces and 11 kills in the 3-0 win as teammates Kasey Tietjen had five digs and 10 kills, and Sally Tietjen killed six, had a pair of aces and eight digs to propel the Bulls to the championship round April 24 at home against No. 2 seeded Connetquot. First service is at 1 p.m.

The Cougars of Centereach in a rare Sunday morning performance took the best of four sets in a League III matchup from visiting West Babylon 25-9, 19-25, 25-16 and 25-14 April 11. It was senior day for the Cougars and before the game the team honored seniors Kimee Sokolowski (defensive specialist) and (outside hitter) Alexa Timo.

Centereach won the opening set-in convincing fashion before falling in the second to make it a new game. The Cougars found their stride and put away the next two sets for the 3-1 win.

Sokolowski had four aces and five digs and Timo had 11 kills. Gianna Buscarino a junior tallied 18 assists.

The win lifts the Cougars to 4-5 in league and will retake the court in a home game against cross town rival Newfield April 14 and finish up regular season play with a road game the following day against Eastport South Manor. First service for both games is 4p.m.

The Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats had their hands full at home in a League V contest with Islip and despite leading the Buccaneers briefly in the second set, fell 25-21, 25-20 and 25-6 April 12. The loss drops Shoreham-Wading River to 5-9 on the season eliminating any possibility of post season play.

The Wildcats retake the court in a home game April 15 before traveling to Hampton Bays the following day to conclude their season. First service is 4p.m. and 6p.m. respectively.
