Shelter Pet of the Week: Mr. Ed

MEET MR. ED

This week’s featured shelter pet is Mr. Ed, an eight year-old Male Domestic Shorthair who was previously adopted from the Smithtown Animal Shelter as a timid kitten. He was returned to the Shelter after his old family had to move and could no longer care for him. Mr. Ed is still a shy guy who will hide constantly, but with a little bit of time for him to learn to trust, he can be very sweet and affectionate. He’ll never turn down getting petted and some TLC. Mr. Ed would do best in a quiet and calm home that will have patience and give him the space he needs to flourish

Shelter Pet of the Week: Chevy

MEET CHEVY!

This week’s shelter pet is Chevy, a one and a half year-old male pit mix up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

Chevy has had a very difficult start to his young life. He was found by law enforcement lying on the side of the road on New Year’s Eve. He was emaciated, completely blind, and very scared and injured. X-rays showed that he had broken and fractured bones all over. It became clear that these injuries were the result of either abuse or negligence.

Chevy had surgery to repair a dislocated elbow, and spent some time in a foster home so his recovery could be closely monitored. Chevy’s condition began to improve, as he started to perk up and play, and showed signs of vision returning in one of his eyes. He still gave a happy greeting to everyone who walked by and would nudge people for affection. His body may have been damaged, but his attitude and spirit would never be broken.

While his vision was improving in one eye, his other eye still had a detached retina, swelling, and light bleeding. The difficult decision was made to remove this eye. Now that he has fully recovered from this surgery, his doctors believe he will live a pain-free life. Chevy is finally getting to experience the happy puppy life that he never had before. He has gained back weight, is strong and mobile despite still having a slight limp, and loves to snuggle and kiss. Even though he was mistreated by humans before, he is still very trusting and friendly to all new people. Chevy is the perfect example of the ultimate comeback story, and he won’t let anything get him down.

Chevy will only be allowed to be into the best of homes who will provide him with the love and care he was missing in his past life. Chevy has experience living with dogs and gets along well with them, but he does need some time to get used to other canine companions and introduce himself. Due to his limited vision, he should only be with older kids that will respect his sight trouble. He also has a well-managed food allergy. Chevy can’t wait to find his perfect furrever home, and we know that home is out there somewhere for him.

Shelter Pets of the Week: Chrissy and Janet

MEET CHRISSY AND JANET!

This week’s featured shelter pets are, from left, Chrissy and Janet, a pair of six year-old sisters who grew up in the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

They were both adopted into a new home for a year and a half, but their new parents sadly had to return them after they fell on hard times.

Both of these loves are very sweet and enjoy snuggles and being petted. They are initially shy, timid, and low-key when first meeting someone, but will open up when given space and time to learn to trust.

Chrissy and Janet have lived with other cats before, and would do best in a quiet home without any children or loud dogs. We would love for these sisters to be adopted together, but they can be separated for the right home.

MEET SUSIE Q!

This week’s featured shelter pet is Susie Q, a 10-year-old female Calico who arrived at the Smithtown Animal Shelter after her human companion passed away.

Susie Q loved her dad so much, and it is taking her some time to open up to new humans. While she certainly has a shy side and likes her alone time, she is very loving and sweet to people she’s comfortable with. She happily lived with two other cats in the past, so she can be adopted into a house with other feline siblings.

This sweetheart would do best in a patient and quiet home without any children. If you would like to meet Susie Q, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with her in a domestic setting.

Shelter Pet of the Week: Sweet Tea

MEET SWEET TEA!

Just look at that smile! This week’s featured shelter pet is Sweet Tea, a fawn and white pitbull mix up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. She is estimated to be around two years old.

Sweet Tea arrived at the shelter on Feb. 13 after being found wandering busy roads trying desperately to get into passing cars.

This loving girl had signs of having had a recent litter and was a little underweight. She is an energetic and social dog that seems to love anyone that will show her attention and is showing a healthy interest in other dogs as well as cats. She would do best in a household with children ages 13 and older.

Shelter Pet of the Week: Chewy

MEET CHEWY!

This week’s featured shelter pet is 3 1/2-year-old Chewy, a red/brown Lab/Sharpei/Pit Mix up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

Chewy and his siblings lost their dad unexpectedly when he passed away. Don’t let his concerned look fool you; this handsome boy is fun loving and likes all people. He did live with several other dogs, though he does not like when other dogs come up to his kennel.

Chewy had some allergy issues when he arrived that have since cleared up but may resurface as seasons change. He seems to have gentle leash manners, loves belly rubs, has a goofy personality and loves to roll on his back.

MEET JOHNNY KNOXVILLE AND PRINCETON!

This week’s featured shelter pets are Johnny Knoxville (orange tabby) and Princeton who recently arrived at the Smithtown Animal Shelter a few weeks apart as strays.

Estimated to be approximately 1 year old, Johnny is very shy while 2-year-old Princeton is very affectionate with people. They were in side by side cages and seemed to want to be together; once in the same cage they became inseparable and have a created a little bromance. They may be adopted separately but it is preferred that they be adopted together.

MEET COCO PUFF AND SQUIDWARD!

This week’s featured shelter pets are, from left, brothers Coco Puff and Squidward, two kitties available for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

They arrived at the shelter on Jan. 21 and are estimated to be 7 years old.

These siblings are quite attached to each other. They lived with three other cats and lost their home when their dad passed away and their mom became ill. They are sweet and affectionate, just a litte shy as they adjust to their new lives. They would love a quiet home together, as they have never been alone.

Shelter Pets of the Week: Tomathena Maria and Donnatello Anthony

This week’s featured shelter pets are Tomathena Maria (black and white tuxedo) and Donnatello Anthony (brown tabby), siblings that came from a very loving home. Unfortunately their mom found herself homeless and had to make the very difficult decision to give up her cats. They are now up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

These two love each other and are very affectionate. Their lives have already been upended and the shelter would love for them to stay together as they comfort each other very much. They have not been around kids or other animals, but they are gentle natured.

Shelter Pet of the Week: Rocco

MEET ROCCO!

This handsome boy is a three and a half year-old Male Lab/Shar Pei/Pit Mix who arrived at the Smithtown Animal Shelter with his siblings after their dad unexpectedly passed away. Rocco is having a difficult time adjusting to his new surroundings and can be slow to come out of his shell, but when he opens up to you, you’ll see just how energetic and friendly he can be. He enjoys running around the dog park and going for walks on a leash. He has mild allergies and some chronic ear infections, and will need a home that can help manage these properly. Rocco gets along with all adults and has experience living with other dogs.

If you are interested in meeting Rocco, please fill out an application to schedule time to properly interact with him in a domestic setting, which includes the shelter’s Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and a Dog Walk trail.

If you have no other pets or young children at home, and are looking for a way to serve your community, please consider signing up to be a foster. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens, and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for extended periods of time.
