The Newfield Wolverines cast a shadow over Smithtown East in their homecoming football game handing the Bulls a 39-7 defeat Oct 2.

Newfield’s Devin Aviles found the endzone twice in the 1st quarter, and teammate Joe Hackal broke a 44 yarder in the second to lead 24-0 at the half.

Smithtown East junior running back Ryan Rooney took the goose egg of the scoreboard for the Bulls catching a pass from Tommy Azzara then turned it upfield and dove for the endzone for the score. Newfield quarterback Josh Jacobs punched in from short yardage along with teammate Sean Sullivan scored on a 29 yarder for your final score.

The win lifts the Wolverines to 2-2 as the loss drops the Bulls to 1-3 at this midway point in the season.

Both teams retake the field Saturday where Newfield hosts North Babylon in their homecoming game, and the Bulls travel to Connetquot. Kickoff for both games is 2 p.m.

The Miller Place Panthers traveled to Wildcat country to take on Shoreham-Wading River in a non-league matchup Oct. 4 looking to sweep the Wildcats in three. 

Miller Place won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21 hoping for an early night, but the Wildcats had other ideas, stealing game three 25-22 forcing a game four. 

Shoreham-Wading River took the fourth set 25-18 to even the score for a game deciding fiftth set. The Panthers struggled to stay ahead but Shoreham-Wading River slammed the door winning the tie breaker 25-22. 

Kelsey Hughes the junior led the way for the Wildcats with 8 kills, teammates Paige Alessi and Morgan Truesdell had 5 kills apiece followed by Ella Marcario who killed 4. 

The win lifts the Wildcats to 4-6 overall and the loss drops the Panthers to 4-7. The Wildcats retook the court Oct. 6 at home against Southampton at 4:30p.m, and the Panthers host East Hampton Oct. 8 with a 6:30 start.

The Northport boys volleyball team showed why they sit atop the Division I leaderboard when they swept Smithtown East in three sets — 25-19, 25-22  and 25-18 — at home Sept 28. 

Although the score was close in the second set, Northport has not allowed their opponents to play beyond three sets this season. The win lifts the Tigers to 6-0 of their 15game season, while the loss drops the Bulls to 3-3. 

Northport’s Zach Zdrojeski notched 18 kills in the contest, and teammate Jake Zarko killed 13. 

Both teams are back in action Sept 30, where Northport hosts Smithtown West, and the Bulls have a road game against Commack. Both games start at 4 p.m.

The Ward Melville Patriots were able to contain the Newfield Wolverines in a Division I field hockey game where the Patriots spread the scoring wealth on their way to a 5-0 shut out on the road Sept 24.

Senior midfielder Courtney Quinn broke the ice half way into the opening quarter for the Patriots when her shot found its mark, and Peyton Phillips rocked the box two minutes later for the 2-0 lead.

Ward Melville senior Izzy Paglia scored at the 13 minute, 40 seconds mark of the second quarter along with fellow senior Emily Grillo who drove her shot home for a 4-0 Patriots lead at the half.

Patriots Olivia Comerford the sophomore rounded out the scoring with 3:38 left in the game for your 5-0 final. Goalie Molly Treder had a quiet day in net for the Patriots with one save.

The win lifts the Patriots to 5-1. The team was back in action Sept 28 with a road game against Bay Shore. Newfield drops to 2-4 in league and returned to the field the same day where they hosted Smithtown East.

It was all Cody Miller for Rocky-Point in the Eagles homecoming victory over Amityville where the senior rushed for three touchdowns and connected with senior wide receiver A.J. Walker through the air for two more.

Miller hit Walker on a 62-yard pass play and 51-yarder in the Eagles 34-22 victory Sept. 25. Walker covered 119 yards on three catches in the Div III matchup. The win lifts the Eagles to 2-1 while Amityville drops to 1-3.

The Eagles retake the field Oct. 1 where they’ll host Kings Park with a 6 p.m. start.

Port Jefferson’s girls varsity soccer team came out strong and scored often in a home game against Wyandanch in a Div II matchup Sept. 22.

The outcome was never in doubt after the Lady Royals took a 5-0 lead into the halftime break. With a roster which lists one eighth grader, eight freshman, eight sophomores with a lone senior, the 8-0 victory belied their years.

Freshman Gwen Connelly led the way with three goals, teammate Olivia Bianco banked two and Ava Cooper, Caitlin Dickhuth and Alexa Jacobs each scored. Freshman Rose Meliker-Hammock had three saves in net. The win lifts Port Jeff to 4-3 with eight games remaining before post season play begins.

The Harborfields Tornadoes looked to sweep the visiting Mustangs of Mount Sinai in three games after winning the first two 25-7, 25-16, but the Mustangs had other ideas rallying from behind in the third set to win 25-22 forcing a game four. 

It was a back-and-forth battle down to the last service but the Tornadoes prevailed edging Mt. Sinai 25-21 in the final set for the 3-1 victory.

Harborfields senior Ava Spencer had 16 kills at net, freshman middle hitter Peyton Elward buried 8 along with 9th grader Joey Greenberg who notched 26 assists. The win lifts Harborfields to 3-1 in league IV as Mount Sinai drops to 2-3.

After protecting a one goal lead going into the second half, Smithtown West junior Sophia Campitites scored the insurance goal with 13 minutes left in regulation for the 2-0 lead in D-I road game against Newfield Sept. 21. 

Newfield’s Megan Spina’s foot spoke next when the senior drove her shot home five minutes later to trail by one. Smithtown West desperate to hang on to their one goal advantage had those hopes dashed by Newfield forward Sarah Cavallo with 20 seconds left in regulation when the sophomore’s shot found its mark to tie the score at 2-2 forcing overtime. 

Unable to settle the game in the first ten-minute overtime period, Smithtown West managed a team goal in the scrum in front of the Newfield net seven minutes into the second, to take the lead and held on to win it 3-2.

The win lifts Smithtown West to 3-1-0 in league while the loss drops the Wolverines to 2-2-1. Both teams are back in action on Sept. 23 where the Bulls travel to take on their cross-town rivals, Smithtown East, while Newfield will host Lindenhurst. Game times are 4:30 and 5:30, respectively.

The Ward Melville Patriots overpowered Riverhead in a Division I matchup on the road shutting out the Blue Waves, 41-0, Sept 18.

Nick Gaffney got the call for the Patriots pounding out yardage carry after carry punching in on short yardage for the score. Ward Melville quarterback Chris Prussen connected with Lorenzo Velez on a 60-yard pass play, when Prussen followed on a keeper covering 65 yards for the score to put the Patriots out front 21-0. Andrew Weber connected on all three kicks. Ward Melville junior Andrew Belli found the end zone twice in the second half capped off by a 50-yard run as Nolan Fontana punched in on a 14-yard carry for your final score.

The Patriots retake the field with a home game against Sachem North Sept 24. Kickoff is schedule for 7 p.m.
