Both Connetquot (No. 5) and Ward Melville (No. 8) softball teams had their backs against the wall where both suffered an opening round playoff loss and wound up in the loser bracket Saturday morning, May 18. 

Connetquot at (12-6) hosted Ward Melville (10-8) in an elimination round of the Suffolk AAA Class championship and led Patriots 6-0 through four innings of play. Izzy Parente’s bat spoke next when she plated Kaitlyn Morales in the top of the 6th inning to take the goose egg off the board. Makenna Steinberg stepped into the batters box and drove in two more, then teammate Cate Scolaro drove in Steinberg for Ward Melville to trail 6-4 to go into the bottom of the 6th inning.

Down to their final three outs, the Patriots trailed 7-4 in the top of 7th but loaded the bases with two outs when Parente crossed home plate on a passed ball to trail 7-5. It was too little too late as Connetquot concluded the Patriots 2024 season.

Having survived a must-win game the day before, Shoreham-Wading River (No. 3) lived to face Sayville (No. 6) at home Sunday, May 19, in a Suffolk Class A playoff match.

Sayville banked two runs in the opening inning, but the Wildcats answered when Kyle Stella drove in Christian Cox to get on the scoreboard. Shoreham-Wading River sophomore Daniel Laieta homered in the bottom of the second driving in to put his team ahead 3-2, a lead that would be short-lived. 

Sayville leveled the game in the top of the 3rd but the Wildcats fell behind in the top of the 5th when Sayville drove in two more runs to make it 5-3. Sayville extended the lead to five in the top of the 6th at 8-3.

Shoreham-Wading River with three outs left, with their season on the brink, rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning plating three runners but Sayville ended the Wildcats season winning the game 8-6.

The Wildcats concluded their 2024 campaign with an impressive 17-5 record.

What began with the inaugural battle for the Cat Cup back in February — a fundraising event to help three local families battling cancer — culminated with the annual Lax Out Cancer games at the Thomas Cutinella Memorial Field in Shoreham Saturday, May 4. 

The event was met with brilliant sunshine in a day-long event that featured lacrosse games, food, 50/50 raffles, auctions along with activities sponsored by the Police Athletic League, with special event gear for sale where the smell of barbecue filled the air. 

The event has been held annually since 2009 which is run entirely by volunteers along with generous donations by local businesses. 

The girls kicked off the competition with the varsity lacrosse team, which beat Long Beach, 10-7, in a non-league game which was followed by the boys varsity lacrosse team squaring off against Hauppauge. The Wildcats edged Hauppauge 8-6 in the Division II matchup. 

These victories made the day an even bigger success.

With the baseball season playoffs just around the corner, Comsewogue (9-6) hosted West Babylon (11-4) in the first game of a three-game series Tuesday, May 7. West Babylon struck first in the top of the fourth inning to take a one run lead, but the Warriors answered back in the bottom of the inning when Anthony Manetta drilled the ball straight away, plating Kevin Schnupp to make it a new game at 1-1.

Breaking the stalemate, West Babylon crossed the plate in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to retake the lead, 2-1, but the Warriors were unable to answer for a final score. In a pitchers duel, Brandon Hancock just outpointed Comsewogue’s Carson McCaffrey.  

With two games remaining in their regular season, Comsewogue will look to improve their playoff ranking before postseason play begins May 14.

Longwood Lions were no match for the visiting Patriots of Ward Melville, Monday, May 6. By the bottom of the fourth inning, Longwood trailed 5-2 after which their bats fell silent. Ward Melville stormed further ahead in the top of the 5th, when Julianna Russ drove in three runs, Avery Wierzbicki plated a runner as did Izzy Parente. With these five runs, the Patriots took a 10-2 lead. Russ’ bat spoke once more in the top of the seventh inning scoring Wierzbicki to take an 11-2 lead into the bottom of the inning. 

Longwood down to their last three outs were unable to answer the call as the Patriots prevailed with the 11-2 victory in the League I matchup.

Ward Melville’s Russ pitched a complete game allowing five hits.

The win lifts Ward Melville to 8-8 with two games remaining before postseason play begins.

The Cougars of Centereach looked to make it a clean sweep when they hosted Copiague Saturday morning, April 27, in the last of a three-game series when they notched another win with a decisive 9-1 victory. The Cougars won game one 6-0, and followed it up with an 11-2 victory in game two.

Centereach senior James Krause was credited with the win, pitching five innings and allowing just the one run in the League III matchup.

Seniors Sal Gangi and Joe Desantis both had two hits as did Anthony Gagliardi and Logan Norman.  

The win lifts the Cougars to 8-4 to sit atop the leaderboard tied with Half Hollow Hills East, their next opponent.

The Royals of Port Jefferson had their hands full when they hosted the Panthers of Miller Place Friday afternoon, April 26, in a home game in a girls lacrosse matchup. The Royals hoped to use the home field — which is grass, not turf — to their advantage. But the game didn’t play out that way in the Division II matchup.

Port Jeff junior Anna Matvya split the pipes midway through the second quarter to break the ice for her team, but it was little consolation as the Royals trailed 11-1 at the half. Miller Place peppered the scoreboard with seven more goals in the second half with Matvya finding the back of the net thrice more for an impressive four goals as the Royals fell to the Panthers 18-4.

Miller Place attack Mirabella Altebrando had three goals and eight assists with teammate Lyla Coffey netting three times. 

Sophia Ingenito and Casey Gilbert both had two goals and an assist for the Panthers and Angie Efstathiou and Hayden Young had two goals apiece.

Port Jeff goalie Emma Batter had 11 saves.

Rocky Point Eagles, on a six-game winning streak, paid a visit to Thomas Cutinella Memorial Field to take on Shoreham-Wading River on a rainy Saturday morning in a Division II matchup, April 20.

The Eagles rattled off three unanswered goals in the opening minutes only to have the Wildcats peel off three of their own to make it a new game with five minutes left in the first quarter.

Rocky Point senior Anna Wood stretched the net in the final seconds to put her team ahead by two at 5-3. Teammate McKenzie Moeller split the pipes off a penalty shot and found the back of the net again to put her team out front 7-3.

Shoreham freshman Madison Herr scored an unlikely one-handed goal while sitting on the turf to trim the Eagles’ lead to three at 7-4 at halftime. Five minutes into the third quarter Reese Marcario scored back-to-back goals for the Wildcats and after teammate Grayce Kitchen netted, Shoreham trailed the Eagles 8-7 at the third quarter.

Rocky Point slowed the tempo of the game the rest of the way with Kylie Lamoureux and Moeller finding the back of the cage for the 10-7 victory.  

Moeller finished with four goals and Lamoureux scored twice along with an assist. Brianna Henke had four stops in net for the Eagles.

Marcario had two goals with an assist and freshman goalie Sophia Giangreco had four saves for the Wildcats.

The Eagles (8-1) hosted Mount Sinai and the Wildcats (5-4) visited Comsewogue, Wednesday, April 24, but the results were not available by press time.

The Patriots of Ward Melville had their hands full when undefeated Half Hollow Hills came calling in a League I flag football matchup on a cold and windy day Thursday, April 18. Half Hollow capitalized on a Patriot miscue with an interception that would put them on the scoreboard first. Ward Melville struggled to gain traction, trailing 21-0 at the halftime break. 

Addison Dellaporta broke the ice for the Patriots with an interception of her own and went the distance for the touchdown but the point-after attempt failed. It would be Ward Melville’s only score on the day when Half Hollow found the end zone late in the game downing the Patriots 28-6.  

The loss drops Ward Melville 2-4 as Half Hollow remains atop the League I leaderboard at 6-0.

Ward Melville retakes the field with a road game against Sachem North (1-5), Friday, April 26. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Having opened their season with a three-game sweep over Babylon, followed by three wins against Southampton, Shoreham-Wading River hit a brick wall in a three-game series against Bayport-Blue Point by dropping all three. 

The Wildcats looked to get back in the win column with a home game against Mattituck Monday afternoon, April 15, where the Tuckers struck first with two runs in the opening inning but it was the bat of SWR’s Joseph Leo that spoke next when the senior smacked a base-clearing triple that put the Wildcats out front by three runs in the bottom of the second at 5-2. Shoreham extended the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Cameron Sheedy drove in Leo.

Mattituck mustered a pair a runs in the top of the sixth inning to draw within two runs at 6-4 when Gordon Votruba, the Wildcats pitcher, answered the call in the bottom of the inning with another base-clearing triple, driving in three more for a five-run lead at 9-4. Mattituck, with its back against the wall in the top of the seventh, plated one runner but the Wildcats prevailed to win the League VII matchup 9-5. 

Votruba notched the win, with nine strikeouts and went 2-4 from the plate.
