The Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) hosted their 33rd Annual Halloween Festival on Oct. 31 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Stony Brook Village. The festival was a huge success and brought more families than ever to the Village Center to celebrate Halloween.

Families enjoyed music from WALK 97.5, trick-or-treating throughout Stony Brook Village Center, dancing with Monster Merlin and games for children.

Nightmare Before Christmas

WMHO announced their 33rd Annual Scarecrow Competition winners during the festival. The winners are as follows:

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Fourth Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the men who were allegedly in possession of a stolen vehicle.

A 2004 white Ford F-150 was reported stolen on Hawthorne Avenue in Ronkonkoma on September 16. The vehicle was located abandoned on Montauk Highway in North Bellport on September 19.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest. Despite challenging weather conditions, more than 50 vendors, including crafts people, local businesses and Community agencies braved the elements and participated in the Sunshine Prevention Center’s Fall Family Festival in Port Jefferson Station on October 14.

In addition to vendors and supportive agencies, there were over 60 raffle prizes and a unique variety of auction items.  For children, there was face painting, balloon making and bouncy houses, courtesy of Tent Pro.   

Overall, the event provided a wonderful venue to network, educate and spread the word about community services, and working together towards common community concerns focused on students and their families.  One example of this is the 65 Narcan kits that were handed out by the Suffolk County Police Department and their training of at least 100 individuals. These kits save lives.  

All in the name of fun for a cause, all proceeds benefit Sunshine’s Fall programs and holiday assistance programs.  In addition, the monies collected and donated to the event go to specific programs offered through this important non-profit organization.  These include newly formed evening programs focused on students and their families.  The monthly parent support/educational workshop series will present a different topic run by different professionals.

In a press release, the organization thanked Nancy Campo who was responsible for all the raffles; Robert Cohen, Sunshine Prevention Board’s President, who donated sports memorabilia for the silent auction; Town of Brookhaven Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich and Hank Heissenbuttel of Long Island Charities Foundation for their ongoing support of Sunshine’s mission and programs; and the Suffolk County Youth Bureau.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate two people who allegedly used a credit card that was reported stolen in Ronkonkoma in October.

A credit card and cash were stolen out of a pocketbook from an unlocked Honda Odyssey that was parked on Lake Shore Road in Ronkonkoma between 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on October 1. The credit cards were used later that day by a man and woman at Game Stop, located inside Smith Haven Mall, at approximately 5 p.m.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the man who allegedly stole audio equipment from a Rocky Point business in September.

A man allegedly stole speakers and a tablet from the North Shore Beach Property Owners Association, located at 55 Clubhouse Drive, at approximately 10:21 p.m. on September 19. The property was valued at approximately $1,180.

During the week of Oct. 16, the Three Village Central School District celebrated Unity Week. Students participated in activities to promote kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Unity Day fell in the middle of the week, on Oct. 18. Students across the district wore orange as a way to send a visible message to end bullying.

Many of the district’s elementary schools held spirit weeks to get students excited about the Unity Week messaging. Spirit days brought the school communities together and had students dress to different themes including “put a lid on bullying,” where students and staff wore crazy hats. Additionally, students participated in art projects to promote positivity. For example, at Setauket Elementary School, Ms. Muzzonigro had students design balloons with messages of kindness written on them, which were then put together to form a mural.

Unity Day takes place each October, but the Three Village Central School District encourages students to follow its message every day of the year.

Brilliant sunshine bathed the 8th annual Thomas Cutinella Memorial Patriot Run that featured more the 700 runners Sunday morning, Oct. 22, at Wildwood State Park in Wading River sponsored by the Wildcat Athletic Club. Proceeds for the event benefit the Thomas Cutinella Memorial Foundation whose mission is threefold by funding scholarships to those area students who best exemplify Thomas’ ideals, promoting organ donation awareness and creating football safety protocols and their implementation statewide under the Tommy Tough initiative.

Thomas succumbed to his injuries sustained on the football field in a Shoreham-Wading River varsity football game at John Glenn High School Oct. 1, 2014. Thomas was a big believer in giving life through organ donation and then the next day, he did just that. 

Nine years ago, Karen Crowell, a Bronx woman in her early 20s, was gravely ill on a transplant waiting list desperately needing a new heart. Crowell got a second chance receiving Thomas’ transplanted heart for a new lease on life. A few years after receiving the gift of life, Crowell and the Cutinella family became acquainted and have remained in touch to this day. 

Two years ago, Crowell was blessed with the birth of her first child, something she thought she would never live to see but because of Thomas’ gift of life, she and her husband Cameron are now the proud parents of a baby girl, Colette.

Two men allegedly stole merchandise from The Wine Guy Liquor Store, located at 220 West Main Street, on October 5 at approximately 11:15 p.m. The merchandise was valued at approximately $25,000. The men used a Sawzall to cut the stores lock. They fled in a Silver GMC Acadia Denali.

Northport High School celebrated Homecoming this weekend with a rousing 47-7 victory over still-winless Copiague on Saturday.

The Tigers improve to 4-3 with the win as they have won three consecutive games and have clinched a playoff berth for the fourth consecutive season. Copiague is 0-7.

Northport senior halfback Michael Campoli was in the end zone with a 6-yard run just 32 seconds into the game. He would add another touchdown on a 54-yard bomb from Tiger senior QB Calvin Blissett to start the second half, giving the Tigers a 40-7 lead. His brother Christian rushed for 108 yards and a score, and bruising fullback Giancarlo Valenti would run for three more touchdowns. The Northport defense forced five turnovers, including two picks by sophomore DB Greyson Cabrera. 

The Tigers are currently ranked fifth in Suffolk County League II with one game remaining, which is on the road against the 6-1 Half Hollow Hills East Thunderbirds. If the Tigers win and get some help in other games, they could move up to the fourth seed and earn a home playoff game in the first round.
