This week’s featured shelter of the week is Morty, a shy and sweet 10 1/2 year-old Havanese currently being cared for at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.
Little Morty was found as an unhealthy stray with severe skin infections. He has a long road to get back to normal, but his spirit remains bright and he loves meeting new people. This sweet boy has been neglected but he didn’t let it break him. He needs a home where he can be treated like the prince he is!
Morty will do fine with calm dogs, cats and older children.

This week’s shelter pet is Uno, a handsome and loving 1 1/2 year old Australian Cattle Dog/Shepherd mix currently up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.
Uno adores people and kids and is an energetic and highly intelligent young man that needs an active home where he is challenged with new tricks/tasks and exercised often. He makes a great running partner too! He does prefer to be the only pet in the home.

This week’s shelter pet is Mr. Smithers, an extremely friendly and affectionate senior cat currently up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.
At 10 years old, Mr. Smithers is certainly not the shy or quiet type. This little chatterbox will let you know when he is in need of some more TLC or attention. If the occasional meow doesn’t do the trick, this dapper gentleman will cuddle up to you with a nudge to ask for more attention. He has a hyperthyroid condition that requires a little extra care, but this is easily managed with daily medications. Mr. Smithers would make a wonderful addition to any family!

This week’s shelter pet is Cookie, an eight-year-old female Terrier mix from the Smithtown Animal Shelter who is destined to bring love and happiness to one lucky family.
With a puppy-like demeanor, a lapdog mentality and fantastic manners, Cookie is a great fit for families with kids over 12, or for the empty nester looking for the world’s best door greeter! She loves to play in the dog park and give out sloppy kisses to everyone she meets.
Cookie lived most of her life in a happy and loving home. Sadly, her former owner passed away. Her new family couldn’t provide her the safety she required and surrendered Cookie to the shelter where she now lives, waiting for that special person to come in and give her a happily ever after.

This week’s shelter pets are Clam Chowder and Minestrone (right), a pair of 11-month-old domestic shorthair brothers who would love to be adopted together.
Minestrone
Both kitties were originally adopted from the Smithtown Animal Shelter this past December, however they sadly were brought back after experiencing some issues with the dog in the house. These little guys are hoping for another chance at finding a furever home with a loving family.
Both Clam Chowder and Minestrone are quiet and full of love. They would do well in a calm home, and they get along well with other cats and with children.

This week’s shelter pet is Parker, a 9-year-old male Chihuahua mix. Sadly, he is a COVID-19 orphan who lost his owner to the disease two months ago. His two geriatric doggy siblings went into foster care, while Parker was brought to the Smithtown Animal Shelter.

This little boy is an absolute love mush who loves all people, and most other dogs and cats! He has a heart murmur that currently does not require any medications, but this may change in the future.
Parker does have food aggression, so he cannot be placed in a home with small children. It may require a bit of extra attention and care to meet all of his needs, but the extra work is worth it when he snuggles up with you.
Parker has been through a lot in his little life, and all he wants is love, attention and a comfy lap to sleep on. We know his hero and forever home is out there for him somewhere. Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic, local pizzerias have teamed up with the Town of Smithtown in a collaborative effort to help find loving homes for rescue dogs and cats at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Each pizzeria has taped adoption flyers to pizza boxes which are distributed to customers throughout the Township. Each flyer includes important information about the animal seeking a loving home, including age, gender and the needs of each adoptee.

“The truth is that it’s an ideal time to consider adopting a loving animal in need of a second chance. So we started making calls to local establishments currently operating as essential businesses. The response was overwhelmingly positive, as many of these establishments have stepped up to help the community from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Councilwoman Lisa Inzerillo.
The main objective of the Pizza Box Adoption campaign is to attract new eyes to the longest shelter residents, often passed up because of age, size or breed misconception. Every adoptee featured on these flyers is truly deserving of a second chance.
Participating businesses in the adoption campaign include Buona Sera in Smithtown, Monte’s in Smithtown, Three Bambino’s in Smithtown, Mannino’s in Smithtown, Ciro’s Pizza in Smithtown, Alpine Bakery in Smithtown, Branchinelli’s in Hauppauge, Mama Sbarro’s in Hauppauge, Gino’s in Kings Park, Legend’s in Kings Park, Ciro’s in Kings Park and Pizzaiola in Commack.
This week’s shelter pet is Peggy, an adorable seven-month-old female domestic shorthair who is patiently waiting at the Smithtown Animal Shelter for her furever home. Here’s her story:
Peggy came to the shelter as part of the Trap-Neuter-Release program, and she instantly started looking for affection. Peggy is gentle, and sometimes can be a little shy, but she loves to be loved by people! She’s great with children, and would do well in a home with other feline friends. In the past, Peggy had to deal with a ruptured ear drum, but she has since improved her condition and is now feeling much better and happier. She has learned to come out of her shell recently, and she would love the opportunity to socialize and make new friends! Her perfect home would be a quiet place where she can cuddle, lounge around, and play all day.

This week’s shelter pet is an eight-year-old female pit bull terrier mix named Betty Boop, currently waiting at the Smithtown Animal Shelter for a family to adopt her. Named after the iconic cartoon diva (who was originally designed as a dog), Miss Boop can’t get enough of people, and volunteers at the shelter can’t get enough of her!
This ball of love was brought in to the shelter by a good samaritan who found her looking lost at a nearby train station. It was quickly discovered how attached she gets to everyone when she cried watching the good samaritan leave. She doesn’t like to see any of her new friends go!
Betty Boop is the perfect combination of calm, affectionate, and sweet all rolled into a 70 pound ball of love. Her eyes say it all; she oozes love and adoration for every new person she meets. While she’s great with children, she would prefer to be the only pet in her home.
