Shelby

Meet Shelby

This adorable 60 lb shar-pei mix at Brookhaven Animal Shelter is approximately 3 years old and ready to bring joy into your life! Shelby is a sweet and lovable girl with a happy-go-lucky personality. While she’s still learning how to play with toys, her enthusiasm for life is infectious.

Shelby arrived at the shelter as a stray, so her previous history is a mystery, but she’s eager to create new memories with a loving family. She’s always excited for walks and enjoys those delightful Zoomies in the yard. Since she is so strong on leash and high energy Shelby would need a home with a yard to zoom around in. Shelby is also a people-person (or should we say, people-dog) who loves checking in for pets and being social.

Shelby seems to have a liking for other dogs, but a meet and greet would be necessary to ensure compatibility with your furry friend. We’re unsure about her compatibility with cats, so further testing would be needed. Shelby would thrive in a home with children aged 16 and up.

If you’re ready to provide Shelby with a loving home and help her continue to blossom, please fill out a match maker application at the shelter’s website. She can’t wait to be your loyal and loving companion! 631-451-6955

Flap Jack

Meet Flap Jack

This special needs kitten at the Smithtown Animal Shelter needs a very special home. Flap Jack was born with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a condition that affects motors skills and coordination. His mobility is pretty compromised, but this smart boy uses his litter box and gets to his food like a champ. He has a fully functioning purr box that he keeps on full blast at all times and is all love, affection, spunk and determination. He needs the perfect home that will understand and support his mobility issues. 631-360-757

Crow

Meet Crow

This beautiful boy has been at Save A Pet in Port Jefferson Station for almost two years! Look at this big goofy guy! Crow is a 3-year-old pit bull and a Southern gentleman. He had a rough start in life and came to New York emaciated, with heart worm disease. He even had buckshot removed from him. Instead of being treated with love, he was target practice for the locals. Crow was robbed of his puppyhood and was instead abused, and discarded.  He holds no grudges and is now a gorgeous Northern gentleman. Crow is big and strong but has been a star in obedience at the shelter. He gets along with most dogs but may chase cats and would do well in a home with older children. Come meet him today! 631-473-6333

Frankie

This sweet boy also adores his stuffies and is house-trained and crate-trained, making him a perfect addition to your family.

Frankie walks well on a leash and is eager to explore the great outdoors—he’d thrive in a home with a yard. He would do best in a home with older children (16 and up) and may enjoy a calmer canine companion, but a meet-and-greet is essential to ensure everyone gets along. If you’re looking for a delightful companion to share your golden years with, Frankie is ready to bring joy and laughter into your life. Come meet this lovable boy and see how he can brighten your days! 631-451-6955

Miss Beautiful

Meet Miss Beautiful

Hello gorgeous! Waiting at Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton for her furever home, Miss Beautiful is appropriately named. A long-haired beauty from Georgia, she is 5 years old and weighs 7 pounds.  Her owner passed away leaving many cats behind. She came to Kent hoping to find a new family to love her. She is very shy and the shelter staff thinks she is still mourning the loss of her home and family. She comes out of her condo to explore when no one is around and is very vocal about it. She enjoys human attention, welcoming neck scratches and lap time. Miss Beautiful would probably do best in a quiet home with lots of attention. Will that be with you? 631-727-5731, ext. 1

Waiting patiently at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, this little guy is Gizmo, a spirited 10-year-old with a heart full of zest and a personality that’s anything but old! Despite his years, Gizmo is brimming with energy and loves to take charge of bird and squirrel duty in the yard. When he’s not on patrol, you’ll find him happily curled up in your lap, basking in the sun, or enjoying a leisurely walk.

Gizmo does have a few quirks—he prefers not to have his back end touched and might show a little attitude if it happens (just a hint of spice!). He also has a cherry eye, but don’t let that fool you; it doesn’t impact his vision one bit. Gizmo would thrive in a home with a low-key canine companion to share his golden years and would do best with children aged 12 and up. He is neutered, vaccinated, and heartworm negative. If you’re looking for a loving lap companion with a playful side, Gizmo is ready to bring joy and warmth to your home!

Birdie

Meet Birdie

Up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter, Little Birdie is a pint-sized, female, bully mix, estimated to be approximately four years old. Birdie’s magnificent red coat with white chest make her nearly the doppelgänger to the 80s movie star Hooch, (Turner And Hooch) if she wasn’t such a teeny, tiny little thing!!

Sweet and innocent little birdie girl was abandoned at a local park. Her loyalty and intelligence were instantly evident to Shelter staff when she was found frightened, confused, and hesitant to leave the spot where she was dumped. It appeared as if she was desperately waiting for her human to come back for her.

When Birdie arrived at the shelter, she was shy and unsure. However, the team showered her with attention and tons of TLC. Birdie quickly revealed what an affectionate and fun loving pup she really is. With a gentle approach, some patience, and a handful of treats, Birdie will quickly give her most loyal friendship to all who make her acquaintance.

She is young, beautiful, healthy, and has an unlimited supply of love to share. Birdie deserves a chance to find her happy ever after where she will never be abandoned again.

Ruffles

Meet Ruffles

This no frills, frilly girl is Ruffles, a nine year old Havanese mix up for adoption at Little Shelter in Huntington.  Finally finding herself on solid footing, she’s slowly learning to trust in her future and the possibility of a real home. Starting to accept all the well-deserved attention coming her way, she can often be seen settled into someone’s lap, enjoying pets and idle conversation. Full of feminism and flair, she’s poised to become the most delightful companion and loyal friend, given the opportunity of time and patience. Stop by to meet Ruffles and see the possibilities! 631-368-8770, ext. 21

Russet

Meet Russet

The approximate weight of a sack of potatoes, meet Russet, an eleven year old Havanese mi at Little Shelter in Huntington. While this Passage to Freedom traveler is gaining confidence every day, he’s still a bit reserved meeting new friends and is hoping to find a quiet, experienced home where he can settle in and feel secure. The Havanese are known to be intelligent and adaptable, so before you know it, Russet will be participating in all your fun family activities.

If you think this “spud” could be for you, stop by to meet Russet today!

*Fun fact: Charles Dickens owned a Havanese named Tim, who was beloved by his seven children.* 631-368-8770, ext. 21

Tuna and Caesar

Meet Tuna and Caesar

These adorable kittens were dumped in a parking lot on a hot day in a closed box. Luckily they were brought to the Smithtown Animal Shelter and are available for adoption.

Estimated to be approximately 6 months old, Caesar is the whole package: sweet, funny, outgoing and playful.

Approximately 9 months old, Tuna is a very affectionate, playful and outgoing little lady. She was a very young mom and was abandoned with her baby and housemate when she was pregnant again! She deserves to have a home that will adore her and pamper her for life. Tuna is FIV positive.  FIV+ cats can live long and happy lives with other cats without issue. Tuna would love to be adopted with Caesar, but may go individually for the right home. 631-360-7575

Daisy Mae

Meet Daisy Mae

Patiently waiting at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, Daisy Mae is a charming 4-year-old mixed breed looking for her forever home. Despite being returned by her previous owner, Daisy Mae is bursting with affection and eager to find a family to call her own.

If there’s one thing Daisy Mae adores, it’s her toys! She’s absolutely smitten with stuffed toys, and there’s no better sight than watching her playfully chase after them or carry them during her walks!

Daisy Mae is a smart girl who knows her basic commands like “sit.” While she might have a short attention span, she’s eager to learn and please her humans. Plus, she’s already housebroken and crate trained, making her transition into your home a breeze.

Daisy Mae prefers to be the center of attention and would thrive as the only pet in the household. She’s not a fan of other dogs, so she’s looking for a home where she can be the queen of her castle with a fenced yard of her own. She would do best in a home with older children aged 16 and up. She loves to romp around and have fun, making her the perfect companion for active teens and adults alike. 631-451-695

Welcome to the 30th edition of Paw Prints, a monthly column for animal lovers dedicated to helping shelter pets find their furever home.

Walter

Meet Walter

A retired accountant, this fourteen- year-old Poodle mix is Walter. He’s been busy crunching the numbers (and a few treats!), estimating his chances of finding a forever home before the dog days of summer. With assets worth barking about, Walter has good leadership skills along with years of experience as a best friend and loyal confidant. Noble and wise, he offers sound advice and high yield dividends as well as some pretty sweet canine kisses! Stop by Little Shelter and you’ll see that Walter (and his balance sheet) adds up to a great choice and a reminder that adopting will always land you in the “plus” column! 631-368-8770, ext. 21

Grandma

Meet Grandma

”A Grandma is a hug waiting to happen.” This fourteen year old Terrier mix at Little Shelter in Huntington is a little bit teacher, and a little bit best friend, emphasizing the importance of living life to the fullest while sharing it with someone special. With all the best qualities of a family matriarch, namely patience, generosity and unconditional love, she would be a great addition to most households.

Seniors are fascinating storytellers and invaluable sources of wisdom, who also act as confidants and sounding boards for all your thoughts and ideas. If you’re looking for a good listener, as well as a loyal companion, we have the perfect answer. Life doesn’t come with a manual, it comes with a Grandma! 631-368-8770, ext. 2

Bowie

Meet Bowie

This handsome 1-year-old Siberian husky is up for adoption at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter. Charming, and handsome with two different colored eyes, Bowie is a head-turner! He adores meeting new people and pups! While he’s a bundle of joy, Bowie could benefit from some basic manners training to help him become the amazing gentleman he’s destined to be. He’s ready to join you on all your adventures, whether it’s hiking, jogging, or playing fetch in the backyard. He’s looking for a family who shares his enthusiasm for life and can provide him with plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Bowie would do well with children 14 and up, and potentially other female dogs with a meet and greet. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped ready to step into his new life. Will that be with you? 631-451-6953

Bonnie Luna

Meet Bonnie Luna

Hi, I am Bonnie Luna! I came from the Bahamas, so I am considered a Potcake! I have been at Kent Animal Shelter  for a long time. I get a little nervous and uneasy around new people, so it’s going to take a little while for you and I to become best friends and trust each other. I can become a very loyal furbaby if you give me a chance. Just ask the kennel workers about me and they will tell you once the bond of trust is there, it will be wonderful. It will take a little while for that to happen so you would have to come visit me regularly first, but I promise it will happen if you give me a chance. Thank you for learning a little bit about me. I hope to see you soon. 631-727-5731, ext. 1

Midnight

Meet Midnight

This beautiful nine-year-old boy was surrended to the Smithtown Animal Shelter on May 24 due to a change in the living situation for his pet parent.
