Flap Jack

Meet Flap Jack

This special needs kitten at the Smithtown Animal Shelter needs a very special home. Flap Jack was born with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a condition that affects motors skills and coordination. His mobility is pretty compromised, but this smart boy uses his litter box and gets to his food like a champ. He has a fully functioning purr box that he keeps on full blast at all times and is all love, affection, spunk and determination. He needs the perfect home that will understand and support his mobility issues. 631-360-757

Crow

Meet Crow

This beautiful boy has been at Save A Pet in Port Jefferson Station for almost two years! Look at this big goofy guy! Crow is a 3-year-old pit bull and a Southern gentleman. He had a rough start in life and came to New York emaciated, with heart worm disease. He even had buckshot removed from him. Instead of being treated with love, he was target practice for the locals. Crow was robbed of his puppyhood and was instead abused, and discarded.  He holds no grudges and is now a gorgeous Northern gentleman. Crow is big and strong but has been a star in obedience at the shelter. He gets along with most dogs but may chase cats and would do well in a home with older children. Come meet him today! 631-473-6333

Frankie

Meet Frankie

This charming 10-year-old cockapoo at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter is ready to find his forever home! Surrendered when his owner could no longer care for him, this spirited senior still has plenty of spunk. Frankie loves to zoom around, chasing tennis balls and engaging in playful antics that will keep you smiling. This sweet boy also adores his stuffies and is house-trained and crate-trained, making him a perfect addition to your family.

Frankie walks well on a leash and is eager to explore the great outdoors—he’d thrive in a home with a yard. He would do best in a home with older children (16 and up) and may enjoy a calmer canine companion, but a meet-and-greet is essential to ensure everyone gets along. If you’re looking for a delightful companion to share your golden years with, Frankie is ready to bring joy and laughter into your life. Come meet this lovable boy and see how he can brighten your days! 631-451-6955

Miss Beautiful

Meet Miss Beautiful

Hello gorgeous! Waiting at Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton for her furever home, Miss Beautiful is appropriately named. A long-haired beauty from Georgia, she is 5 years old and weighs 7 pounds.  Her owner passed away leaving many cats behind. She came to Kent hoping to find a new family to love her. She is very shy and the shelter staff thinks she is still mourning the loss of her home and family. She comes out of her condo to explore when no one is around and is very vocal about it. She enjoys human attention, welcoming neck scratches and lap time. Miss Beautiful would probably do best in a quiet home with lots of attention. Will that be with you? 631-727-5731, ext. 1

Mike Kilano. Courtesy Paws of War

By Lauren Feldman

Mike Kilano, a United States Marine veteran, veteran advocate and crisis coordinator for Paws of War, will participate in the 22 PAC PTSD Awareness Challenge Aug. 30. This event aims to raise awareness for PTSD and veteran suicides, and to bring together over 20 veteran-related nonprofits.

Kilano, a North Babylon resident, will kayak 22 miles with others across Long Island Sound, starting in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and ending in Port Jefferson.

Kayaks will leave Bridgeport at 10:30 a.m. and are due to arrive in Port Jeff at 5:30 p.m. There will be a reception party, open to the public, at the Village Center with free food, drinks and a band from 4 to 8 p.m.

For Kilano, the challenge is a way to support his fellow servicemen and women. It symbolizes the 22 veterans who tragically take their lives each day.

Kilano understands the profound impact of combat-derived PTSD. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1999 to 2003 and was deployed to the Middle East shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, participating in Operation Enduring Freedom.

His service left him with deep scars. After just three months of deployment, Kilano began to notice how the sights, sounds and experiences of war were affecting his mental health.

Upon returning home, his struggles intensified. “I couldn’t sleep, tried to go to school, couldn’t focus … my anger took control, I got into some pretty reckless behaviors,” he said. “My isolation was so bad for two or three years, and I had a family. So you can imagine my kids and my wife having secondary PTSD because their father — her husband — had all these issues we didn’t even know about.”

Helped by Paws of War

Veteran Mike Kilano demonstrates kayak skills at Steers Beach, in Northport, in advance of the 22 PAC challenge. Courtesy of Paws of War

After nearly 20 years, Kilano was diagnosed with combat-related PTSD and began receiving services through the VA. He has slowly found ways to manage his PTSD, greatly aided by his service dog, Nova, who was paired with him through Paws of War. Nova is not only a fully trained service dog but also a beloved family member.

Paws of War, located in Nesconset, trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to U.S. military veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war.

Inspired by Paws of War, Nova and the positive changes in his life, Kilano now works full time with the organization, helping other veterans navigate their struggles. “For a lot of veterans, their animals are their lifeline. If I can make them aware of the help of a service dog, I feel like I’m making a difference,” he said.

“As tough as things get, I know there’s a community of veterans like me,” he added. “If I can be that voice or that encouragement to my brothers or sisters, then it makes my mission away from the mission in combat worthwhile. I can sleep better because I’m helping someone out.”

Kilano is excited about participating in the 22 PAC challenge. “I love kayaking,” he said. The activity provides him with an outlet and forces him to slow down and focus: “As I start training, I’m out in the open water, I’m able to breathe, no one’s around. You’re able to focus on your breathing, your muscles. You have to get that energy out. You can’t have much negative energy when you’re in the middle of the ocean.”

Mike Kilano. Courtesy Paws of War

In preparation for the challenge, Kilano conducted kayak training at Steers Beach, Northport, Aug. 16 and spoke about his experiences with PTSD and the support he has received. “As a veteran advocate, I think it’s important to showcase groups like 22 PAC and what they’re about so that others get encouraged,” he said.

Kilano plans to continue his advocacy beyond the 22 PAC challenge. Readers interested in donating to the fundraiser and learning more about Paws of War can visit the websites 22pac.org and pawsofwar.org.

Birdie

Meet Birdie

Up for adoption at the Smithtown Animal Shelter, Little Birdie is a pint-sized, female, bully mix, estimated to be approximately four years old. Birdie’s magnificent red coat with white chest make her nearly the doppelgänger to the 80s movie star Hooch, (Turner And Hooch) if she wasn’t such a teeny, tiny little thing!!

Sweet and innocent little birdie girl was abandoned at a local park. Her loyalty and intelligence were instantly evident to Shelter staff when she was found frightened, confused, and hesitant to leave the spot where she was dumped. It appeared as if she was desperately waiting for her human to come back for her.

When Birdie arrived at the shelter, she was shy and unsure. However, the team showered her with attention and tons of TLC. Birdie quickly revealed what an affectionate and fun loving pup she really is. With a gentle approach, some patience, and a handful of treats, Birdie will quickly give her most loyal friendship to all who make her acquaintance.

She is young, beautiful, healthy, and has an unlimited supply of love to share. Birdie deserves a chance to find her happy ever after where she will never be abandoned again.

Birdie’s energy makes her a perfect fit for a home where she is an only pet and with older kids, preferably over the age of fourteen. Call 631-360-7575 to set up a meet and greet.

Zach & Zoe

Meet Zach & Zoe

Zach, a Morkie and Zoe, a Maltipoo are currently up for adoption at Little Shelter in Huntington. Both eleven years old, they are looking for a home together. Like any old married couple, they can finish each other’s sentences, often adding a few embellishments to their many stories. Zoe is the breadwinner and doesn’t mind “working” the staff and volunteers for treats to take back for Zach, who prefers to stay on the comfy couch with the remote. Both are enthusiastic, however, when it comes to being your loyal companions and confidants. If these two best friends sound like they could be your best friends, stop by Little Shelter to meet them today! 631-368-8770, Ext. 21

Porgy

Meet Porgy

Porgy is a charming 2-year-old Retriever mix at Brookhaven Animal Shelter looking for his forever home. This sweet boy knows his basics like sit and is eager to learn more, especially when it comes to walking nicely on the leash. Porgy, unfortunately, isn’t a fan of other animals, so he’d love to be the sole focus of your affection.

Originally arriving as a stray, Porgy has a heartwarming story of resilience. Initially shy, he’s been gradually opening up, realizing that new people aren’t scary. Porgy is ready to form a strong bond with a loving family.

He thrives in environments with children aged 12 and up, making him a great companion for older kids. Porgy enjoys the outdoors, so a spacious yard where he can run around and have a blast would be ideal for him.

If you’re ready to open your heart and home to this wonderful pup, Porgy is waiting to become your loyal companion. Let’s make his journey complete with a loving family and a forever home! Please fill out a Matchmaker Adoption Application at www.brookhavenny.gov/152/Animal-Shelter to arrange a meet and greet. 631-451-6950

Rubbish

Meet Bubbish

The Golden Age is characterized by wisdom, contentment and useful leisure, epitomized by this twelve year old Pomeranian named Bubbish, up for adoption at Little Shelter in Huntington. Devilishly handsome, yet angelic in spirit, he loves nothing more than a cuddle, happily curling up next to your side every chance he gets. Like most seniors, he has a few health issues, including limited vision, yet is still the perfect walking partner, guided by your voice as you discuss the plans for the day. Upbeat and positive, you’ll find him to be the best company around, always leaving smiles behind. Stop by Little Shelter today and meet your new bestie, Bubbish! 631-368-8770, Ext. 21

Eddie & Clark

Meet Eddie & Clark

These handsome devils at the Smithtown Animal Shelter are both estimated to be around 4 years young.  They were found together, and do enjoy each other, but are not bonded.  While the shelter would love to adopt them together, they will adopt separately for the right homes.  Both are nervous dogs and need slow intros to new animals. They love all people. Clark needs someone around most of the time as he is nervous to be on his own.  Eddie is more adjusted to alone time.  Both boys are sweet and affectionate. 631-360-7575

Kaos

Meet Kaos

Happy New Year to you too Kaos! This gentle, 85lb Robbie mix at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter is looking for her forever family. Kaos wandered the streets, hoping her family would find her, but sadly, they never came. Despite her name, she’s anything but chaotic! This sweet 5 to 6-year-old girl adores people and is thrilled to meet everyone she can.

Kaos is a strong girl who knows her basic commands, seems housebroken, and appreciates the comfort of a cozy dog bed. She’s a food lover and needs help with her weight loss journey after coming to us quite overweight. Eager for walks, she’s strong on the leash and could use some additional training, but she’d thrive in a home with a yard to explore enjoying sniffing and some fetch with toys. Even though her actual favorite activity involves pets and cuddles with her humans.

This goofy girl would shine in a home with children over 10 years old who appreciate her playful personality. Kaos is up-to-date on vaccinations and heartworm tested and spayed, ready for her forever home. Consider welcoming Kaos into your heart and home today! 631-451-6950
