It’s time to shake up Shakespeare.

Suffolk County Community College’s latest production of Shakespeare’s Lovers & Fighters is a great approach to the famous playwright and his stories since it’s a compilation of some of his most famous scenes from several different plays. 

Serving as an anthology of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Henry V, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night and Hamlet director Steven Lantz-Gefroh said this was a way to bring a little bit of Shakespeare and highlight both the lovers and the fighters.

What’s great for this hour-and-a-half long show, with a 10-minute intermission, is that the audience gets snippets of some of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays without having to sit through them in their entirety. Narrated by William, himself, in between the different scenes, the show is a way to either adore some of your favorite Shakespearean tragedies, comedies and histories or immerse yourself into a piece of his work that you might not know of already.

Set on a brilliantly crafted stage that hosts a balcony, stairs and minimal props, the actors are able to adapt quickly and efficiently in between the different stories; some that take place in France (As You Like It), Scotland (Macbeth), Athens (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Denmark (Hamlet), and Italy (The Taming of the Shrew and Romeo and Juliet).

We start off with scene 3.2 from As You Like It where Rosalind and her cousin, Celia, are met with Rosalind’s love interest, Orlando. Dressed in drag, Rosalind fools Orlando into believing she is a love expert. 

We head south to Italy for scene 2.1 of The Taming of the Shrew where we meet Katherine, an angsty, angry shrew of a woman who is being courted by Petruchio after he makes a deal with her father, Baptista. Katherine wants none of this, but could there be chemistry between the two if she tried?

While in Italy, we’re outside Juliet Capulet’s balcony for that famous scene. Enough said.

Up in Scotland, we meet Macbeth who fights Macduff in an intense scene of combat. The artistry behind the fight is stunning and impressive to the audience sitting at the edges of their seats.

Thereafter we’re back in France at Henry V’s court where we see him seduce Catherine of France as part of a plan to end the Hundred Years’ War and place King Henry on the French throne.

Back in Verona, we are in the public square where the Capulets and Montagues fight it out after the two groups have words — which stems from generations of feuding between the two families. As before, the swordsmanship is a dance on the stage that is carefully crafted with every move. Impressive, again, to say the least.

We also are privileged to see scene 4.1 from As You Like It, 3.4 from Twelfth Night, 5.1 from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and 3.1 from Hamlet during act two. 

The show concludes with the entire cast on stage separated into the English and French for an epic battle scene between the two groups from scenes 4.3-7 from Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt. All in all, the show has something for everyone — whether you liked reading Shakespeare in high school or not. 

The talent of these actors — which include Gabriel Patrascu, Scott Dowd, Ryan Shaw, Jeremy Bazata, Alani Etheridge, Angie Barrientos, Alani Etheridge, Michaela Fitzsimmons, Haylee Giglio, Talia Mazza and Thomas McGuire — is beyond exceptional. Their ability to become the characters Shakespeare created nearly 500 years ago (and speak-eth in thy tongue) is incredibly difficult but they do it with such ease that it is especially impressive. Each actor shines on stage in their Shakespearean costume, you’ll think that you’re watching New York City’s “Shakespeare in the Park,” — only this is much closer.

On several Thursday evenings throughout the year, the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, 180 Little Neck Road in Centerport invites the community to join them for a FREE family-friendly planetarium show.

This week, on November 14, Thankful Thursday will feature Earth, Moon & Sun, for ages 7 and up, at 7 p.m.

This family show explores the relationship between the Earth, Moon and Sun with the help of Coyote, an amusing character adapted from Native American oral traditions, who has many misconceptions about Earth and its most familiar neighbors. Native American stories are used to help distinguish between myths and science.

Learn why the Sun rises and sets and the basics of fusion and solar energy. Examine the Moon’s orbit, craters, phases and eclipses. The show also explores past and future space travel to the Moon and beyond. Produced by the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

After the show,  the observatory will be opened to the public and an astronomy educator will invite you to look through a telescope at the night sky (weather permitting). Funding for this series is generously provided by BAE Systems.

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County hosted a preview of its annual Holiday Light Show at the Enchanted Forest at the Girl Scouts’ Camp Edey, located in Bayport on Nov. 12.

As part of the event, five Girl Scouts who won the annual Holiday Lights drawing contest saw their sketches come to life as a lighted display for the first time. Creations included a multi-colored daisy, a Girl Scout jumping over a bridge with the phrase “I Believe in Myself,” and a festive set of holiday cars traversing the woods. 

“I submitted in previous years and this is the first time I’m getting it,” said Jasmine Luo, 17, of Commack who is an aspiring artist and one of the winners of the contest. “I get to express myself more. Through my art I can spread my feelings and thoughts to other people better.” 

The show returns to Camp Edey for the first time since 2016 with an immersive, half-mile walk-through experience, with dozens of dazzling and animated light displays, including the iconic giant lighted Christmas tree, with plenty of fun photo opportunities along the way. Creating the show takes five miles of extension cords and enough electricity to power 25 homes. 

“We’re thrilled to once again highlight the creativity of our Girl Scouts as their designs go from drawings to a vibrant, lighted display that everyone can enjoy,” said Tammy Severino, President and CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “This is the only holiday light show that supports a nonprofit. Funds raised through the show will provide scholarships to help girls become Girl Scouts and participate in our programs.”

For the third time ever, Stony Brook University’s International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) team brought home the gold medal from the iGEM Giant Jamboree.

Held in Paris, France from October 23-26, the iGEM Giant Jamboree is a world expo for synthetic biology. This year’s competition featured 438 teams from 45+ countries, competing for medals and awards by designing, building, and testing projects using cutting edge synthetic biology.  Stony Brook University was one of 16 U.S. collegiate teams to earn a gold medal.

Stony Brook University’s project focused on developing a less invasive, more cost effective way to diagnose B-cell lymphoma. The team focused on equipping E.coli with a genetically engineered gene circuit to detect microRNAs as biomarkers for this disease.

“Stony Brook’s participation in iGEM continues to have a profound impact on our students,” said Peter Gergen, SUNY distinguished service professor, Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. “This year’s team was extremely cohesive and benefited greatly from the advice and assistance provided by former iGEM team members Chris Helenek, AJ Sillato, Abhishek Cherath, Michelle Yang, Bushra Islam and Zach Don as well as input from Dr. Joshua Rest (Ecology and Evolution) and Melanie Cragan (Biochemistry and Cell Biology).”

This year’s interdisciplinary iGEM team, comprising three juniors, four sophomores, and eight first-year students when they started last January, included those with majors in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, information systems, and political science. The team was co-advised by faculty members Peter Gergen and Kathryn Gunn in the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, and Gabor Balazsi, in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and received support from the staff in Undergraduate Biology.

Relatively small amounts of exercise lead to big benefits

Last week, I had a conversation with a vibrant, independent 96-year-old, who was excited to share her thoughts about the current election cycle.

It’s becoming more common to live into your 90s: according to the National Institutes of Health, those who were more than 90 years old increased by 2.5 times over a 30-year period from 1980 to 2010 in the U.S. (1). Researchers refer to this group as the “oldest-old,” which includes those over age 84.

What do these “oldest-old” have in common? According to one study, they tend to have fewer chronic medical conditions or diseases. As a result, they typically have greater physical functioning and mental acuity, which allows them a better quality of life (2).

A study of centenarians found that they tended to be healthy and then die rapidly, without prolonged suffering (3). In other words, they stayed mobile and mentally alert.

While genetics are a factor that can predict your ability to reach this exclusive club, lifestyle choices also play an important role. Let’s look at the research.

Does exercise really help extend our lives?

We’re repeatedly nudged to exercise. This is not vanity; it can have a direct impact on our longevity and health.

One study of over 55,000 participants from ages 18 to 100 showed that five-to-ten minutes of daily running, regardless of the pace, can significantly impact our life span by decreasing cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality (4).

Amazingly, even if participants ran fewer than six miles a week at a pace slower than 10-minute miles, and even if they ran only one to two days a week, there was still a decrease in mortality compared to nonrunners. Those who ran for this very limited amount of time and modest pace potentially added three years to their life span.

An editorial that accompanied this study shared that more than 50 percent of people in the U.S. do not achieve the current recommendation of at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day (5).

One study of over a quarter-million people found that walking just 3867 steps a day started to reduce the risk of dying from any cause, and every additional 1000 steps reduced risk of death from all causes another 15 percent (6). The researchers could not find an upper limit to the benefits.

For those 85 and older, all-cause mortality risk was reduced 40 percent by walking just 60 minutes a week at a pace that qualified as physical activity, not even exercise.

What is the best protein source?

Many are questioning the value of a long-standing dietary paradigm that suggests we need to eat sufficient animal protein to support us as we age.

In an observational study of 7,000 participants from ages 50 to 65, researchers found that those who ate a high-protein diet with greater than 20 percent of their calories from protein had a had a 75 percent increase in overall mortality, a four-times increased risk of cancer mortality, and a four-times increased risk of dying from diabetes during the following 18 years (7). 

However, this did not hold true if plants were the protein source. Interestingly, they found a high-protein plant diet may actually reduce the risks, not increase them. The reason, according to the authors, is that animal protein may increase insulin growth factor-1 and growth hormones that have detrimental effects on the body.

The Adventists Health Study 2 of over 73,000 participants with a median age of 57 years reinforced these findings (8). It looked at Seventh-day Adventists, a group that emphasizes a plant-based diet, and found that those who ate animal protein once a week or less experienced a significantly reduced risk of dying over the next six years compared to those who were more frequent meat eaters. 

What does systemic inflammation tell us about longevity?

The Whitehall II study included 3,044 participants over the age of 35 who did not have a stroke, heart attack or cancer at the beginning of the study (9). Researchers measured a specific marker for inflammation, interleukin-6 (IL-6). They found that higher levels had negative impacts on participants’ healthy longevity. If participants had elevated IL-6 (>2.0 ng/L) at both baseline and at the end of the 10-year follow-up period, their probability of healthy aging decreased by almost half. The good news is that inflammation can be improved significantly with lifestyle changes.

The bottom line is that lifestyle choices are important to healthy longevity. A small amount of exercise and consuming more plant protein than animal protein can contribute to a substantial increase in healthy life span. IL-6 may be a useful marker for inflammation, which could help predict healthy or unhealthy outcomes. Your doctor can test to see if you have an elevated IL-6. If you do, lifestyle modifications may be able to reduce these levels.

Award-winning TV host, comedian, actress and author Sherri Shepherd is at increased risk for pneumococcal pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) because she has diabetes. She doesn’t want to let it stop her from taking her shot on – or off – the stage. That’s why Sherri is partnering with Pfizer to share her diabetes story and help raise awareness about the importance of getting vaccinated.

Q: Sherri, there’s no doubt that you’re a superstar in more than one arena. What has helped contribute to your success over the years?

I learned early on that you need to run toward the thing that scares you because that’s where you can really thrive. And let me tell you, starting out in comedy and TV can be scary. But I put in the time practicing jokes on the bus, spending time on the road, working late hours behind the scenes, and it all led me to where I was supposed to be. And now, I get to take my shot at doing what I love every day.

Q: I’m sure you faced some challenges to get where you are today. What was one of the biggest you’ve faced?

I think the biggest one for me is more of a personal one. I have diabetes, so over the years I’ve had to learn how to keep my health in check. For me, I prioritize eating right, keeping active, talking with my doctor regularly, and getting vaccinated to help prevent pneumococcal pneumonia and IPD. It took a lot to get here so I don’t want to be held back from doing what I love.

Q: Tell me more about pneumococcal pneumonia and IPD. Are they serious?

Absolutely. Pneumococcal pneumonia is a potentially serious bacterial lung disease that can disrupt your life for weeks. In more severe cases, it can put you in the hospital and even be life-threatening. The same bacteria that cause pneumococcal pneumonia can also cause invasive pneumococcal disease, or IPD, which includes blood infection and meningitis.

Q: That does sound serious. Who is at greater risk?

People like me who are 19 or older with certain underlying medical conditions like diabetes, asthma or COPD. In fact, people 19-64 living with diabetes are at over 5x higher risk for pneumococcal pneumonia and up to 4.8x higher risk for IPD, compared with healthy adults the same age. People 65 or older are also at increased risk, even if they’re healthy.

Q: What advice would you give to people about protecting themselves against pneumococcal pneumonia and IPD?

Getting vaccinated is one of the best ways to help protect yourself. And vaccination is available all year round, so I encourage everyone to talk to their doctor or pharmacist to see if a pneumococcal vaccination is right for them. Q: Thanks, Sherri. Is there anything else people should know about pneumococcal pneumonia and IPD?

People assume you can only get pneumococcal pneumonia and IPD during flu season or in the winter, but you can get it any time of year. And even if you’ve already been vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia before, your doctor may still recommend another vaccination for further protection. I love hosting my show and doing comedy, but I don’t joke around when it comes to pneumococcal pneumonia and IPD – and you shouldn’t either. Go talk to your doctor or pharmacist about getting vaccinated, so you can also keep taking your shot at whatever it is you love to do. (BPT)

As we enter the holiday season, your life may well become busier. Still, you might want to take the time to consider some financial moves before we turn the calendar to 2025.

Here are a few suggestions:

Review your investment portfolio. As you look at your portfolio, ask these questions: Has its performance met my expectations this year? Does it still reflect my goals, risk tolerance and time horizon? Do I need to rebalance? You might find that working with a financial professional can help you answer these and other questions you may have about your investments.

Add to your 401(k) and HSA. If you can afford it, and your employer allows it, consider putting more money into your 401(k) before the year ends — including “catch-up” contributions if you’re 50 or older. You might also want to add to your health savings account (HSA) by the tax-filing deadline in April. 

Use your FSA dollars. Unlike an HSA, a flexible spending account (FSA) works on a “use-it-or-lose-it” basis, meaning you lose any unspent funds at the end of the year. So, if you still have funds left in your account, try to use them up in 2024. (Employers may grant a 2½ month extension, so check with your human resources area to see if this is the case where you work.) 

Contribute to a 529 plan. If you haven’t opened a 529 education savings plan for your children, think about doing so this year. With a 529 plan, your earnings can grow tax deferred, and your withdrawals are federally tax free when used for qualified education expenses — tuition, fees, books and so on. And if you invest in your own state’s 529 plan, you might be able to deduct your contributions from your state income tax or receive a state tax credit.

 Build your emergency fund. It’s generally a good idea to keep up to six months’ worth of living expenses in an emergency fund, with the money held in a liquid, low-risk account. Without such a fund in place, you might be forced to dip into your retirement funds to pay for short-term needs, such as a major car or home repair. 

Review your estate plans. If you’ve experienced any changes in your family situation this year, such as marriage, remarriage or the birth of a child, you may want to update your estate-planning documents to reflect your new situation. It’s also important to look at the beneficiary designations on your investment accounts, retirement plans, IRAs and insurance policies, as these designations can sometimes even supersede the instructions you’ve left in your will. And if you haven’t started estate planning, there’s no time like the present.

Take your RMDs. If you’re 73 or older, you will likely need to take withdrawals — called required minimum distributions, or RMDs — from some of your retirement accounts, such as your traditional IRA. If you don’t take these withdrawals each year, you could be subject to penalties.

These aren’t the only moves you can make, but they may prove helpful not only for 2024 but in the years to come.
