Jose Martinez-Vazquez Fatally Stabbed Benjamin Flores-Mendez While Tiffany Diaz-Cabrera, Served as a Lookout

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced on July 25 that Jose Martinez-Vazquez, 25, and Tiffany Diaz-Cabrera, 21, both of Port Jefferson Station, pleaded guilty to their respective roles in the fatal stabbing of Benjamin Flores-Mendez, 39, also from Port Jefferson Station. Martinez-Vazquez pleaded guilty to Murder in the Second Degree, for fatally stabbing Flores-Mendez. Diaz-Cabrera pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree, for acting as a look out while the stabbing took place.

“These defendants conspired to brutally take the life of Benjamin Flores-Mendez, and then did so in a place where Suffolk County residents should feel safe to walk, hike, or bike,” said District Attorney Tierney. “Violence is never the answer, and we will not rest until anyone committing such wanton acts are brought to justice.”

According to court documents and the defendants’ admissions during their guilty plea allocutions,

on June 17, 2021, Martinez-Vasquez followed the victim into the Port Jefferson Station entrance of the Setauket-Port Jefferson Station Greenway Trail. Martinez-Vazquez admitted to fatally stabbing the victim multiple times while Diaz-Cabrera, Martinez-Vazquez’s girlfriend, served as his lookout. The victim was later discovered lying in the entrance of the trail by Good Samaritans.

On March 5, 2023, Suffolk County homicide detectives arrested both defendants.

On April 22, 2024, Diaz-Cabrera pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony, before Acting Supreme Court Justice Karen M. Wilutis. Diaz-Cabrera is due back in court for sentencing on August 29, 2024. She is being represented by Luigi Belcastro, Esq.

On July 25, 2024, Martinez-Vazquez pleaded guilty to Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A violent felony, before Justice Wilutis. Martinez-Vazquez is due back in court for sentencing on August 28, 2024. He is being represented by John Halverson, Esq.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Elena Tomaro of the Homicide Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Tara Laterza of the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau, and the investigation was conducted by Detective James Hughes of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Squad.

Candelario Cordova Faces 30 Years in Prison for Fatally Stabbing His Friend and Attempted Murder of Victim’s Wife

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney on May 14 announced that Candelario Cordova, 54, of Huntington Station, pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree, for the stabbing death of 58-year-old Roque Cisneros. He also pleaded guilty to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, for stabbing the victim’s wife when she tried to intervene.

“Unfortunately, in addition to witnessing the trauma of her husband being stabbed to death by the defendant, the victim’s wife also endured her own horrific injuries during the defendant’s attack,” said District Attorney Tierney. “I hope that the defendant’s plea today brings some measure of closure and relief to the victim’s wife and family.”

According to the investigation and the defendant’s admissions during his guilty plea allocution, on February 16, 2023, Cordova and Cisneros, who were friends and co-workers, were both sitting in the defendant’s SUV that was parked in front of Cisneros’ home. Cisneros’ wife, who was looking out of her kitchen window, saw Cordova seated in the driver’s seat and trying to get Cisneros out of the vehicle. The defendant then suddenly drove away with Cisneros still in the SUV, so Cisneros’ wife jumped into her car and followed them.

Cordova stopped his SUV around the corner on Oakwood Road, jumped out, opened the trunk, and retrieved a long knife. He then opened the passenger side of the SUV and began stabbing Cisneros repeatedly in the neck and body. Cisneros’ wife attempted to stop the attack by grabbing Cordova, who then began slashing and stabbing her. Several passing motorists stopped and intervened, ultimately subduing Cordova until members of the Suffolk County Police Department arrived. The knife used during the attack was recovered at the scene.

Cisneros was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple stab and incise knife wounds. Cisneros’ wife was transported to Huntington Hospital where she was treated for her stab wounds.

On May 14, 2024, Cordova pleaded guilty before Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins to Manslaughter in the First Degree, and Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, both Class B violent felonies.

Cordova is due back in court for sentencing on June 20, 2024, where he is expected to receive 30 years in prison. He is being represented by Matthew Tuohy, Esq.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Frank Schroeder of the Homicide Bureau and Patrick Fedun of the Major Crime Bureau, and the investigation was conducted by Detective Michael Ronca of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Squad.

Suffolk County Police arrested a man on May 12 for allegedly stabbing and seriously injuring another man in
Huntington Station.

Two men were engaged in a verbal dispute inside Las Lajas Deli, located at 156 Depot Road, when one of the men stabbed the other in the neck, chest, and abdomen at approximately 10 p.m. Second Precinct officers arrived at the scene and arrested Adelcy Almendarez for the stabbing. The 40-year-old victim was transported to a local hospital in serious but stable condition.

Second Squad detectives charged Almendarez, 50, of Huntington Station with alleged Assault 1st Degree, Assault 2nd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree.  Detectives are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.

Ronald Oscal Cruz Pleaded Guilty Last Month to Stabbing a Riverhead Man

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced on Feb. 14 that Ronald Oscal Cruz, 31, of Calverton, was sentenced to eight and one-half years in prison after pleading guilty to Assault in the First Degree, for stabbing a 37-year-old Riverhead man with a kitchen knife causing severe physical injuries including the removal of a portion of the victim’s pancreas.

“Thankfully for the quick action of the police officer here, the defendant was arrested before anyone was killed and the victim received vital emergency care,” said District Attorney Tierney. “We will not tolerate such violence in Suffolk County.”

According to court documents and the defendant’s admissions during his guilty plea allocution, on July 18, 2022, at approximately 10:45 p.m., Oscal Cruz stabbed the victim multiple times in the back with a large kitchen knife. A plainclothes police officer observed Oscal Cruz chasing the victim down Main Street in Riverhead. When the officer stopped Oscal Cruz, he was in possession of the kitchen knife covered in blood.

The victim was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center and underwent three surgeries to control the bleeding from the lacerations to his stomach, spleen, pancreas, and colon.

The following day, the victim nearly died while being airlifted to South Shore University Hospital for additional treatment. The victim survived after multiple hours of surgery, but part of his pancreas was removed.

On January 12, 2024, Oscal Cruz, pleaded guilty to Assault in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony, before Acting Supreme Court Justice, the Honorable Anthony S. Senft Jr. On February 14, 2024, Justice Senft sentenced Oscal Cruz to eight and one-half years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision. He was represented by John Halverson, Esq.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Keri Wasson and Tara O’Donnell of the Major Crime Bureau, with investigative assistance from Detective Richard Freeborn of the Suffolk County Police Department.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced on July 3 that Philip Walker, 56, of Mastic, was arrested and charged with Murder in the Second Degree for allegedly stabbing and killing his housemate, Jimmy Vaughn, 63.

“This defendant allegedly killed Jimmy Vaughn in cold blood,” said District Attorney Tierney. “I thank the prosecutors and the Suffolk County Homicide Squad for their swift investigation and apprehension of this defendant, who will now be brought to justice.”

According to the police investigation, on June 30 at approximately 5:00 p.m., a witness called 911 to report that Walker had allegedly stabbed Vaughn inside a room at the Shirley Motel on Montauk Highway in Mastic. Walker and Vaughn were both living in a group home at the Shirley Motel at the time of the incident.

When paramedics arrived, Vaughn was found outside of the room, bleeding from the left side of his chest and abdomen. Vaughn was taken to Long Island Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

page1image29910576Video surveillance recovered from the scene allegedly showed Walker entering and leaving from the motel room where Vaughn was stabbed.

Walker allegedly fled from the motel after the incident, but was arrested on July 2 at a family member’s home in North Amityville.

On July 3, Walker was arraigned for Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A violent felony, and remanded without bail during the pendency of the case. He is due back in court on July 7.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney on Feb. 17 announced the arrest of Candelario Cordova, 53, of Huntington Station, who allegedly stabbed his friend to death, and then slashed and stabbed his friend’s wife when she tried to intervene.

“This defendant allegedly murdered his friend and was savagely attacking his friend’s wife when she tried to save her husband’s life,” said District Attorney Tierney. “Our thoughts are with the Cisneros family as we prosecute this defendant for this horrendous crime.”

According to the investigation, on February 16, the wife of Roque Cisneros, 58, looked out of the front window of her Huntington Station home and saw her husband sitting in the front passenger seat of an SUV. Cordova, a family friend of nearly 20 years, and who was seated in the driver’s seat of the SUV, appeared to be trying to get Cisneros out of the vehicle. When Cisneros’ wife saw Cordova suddenly pull away with her husband still in the SUV, she jumped in her car and followed them.

It is unknown at this time what Cordova’s motive was in killing Cisneros On February 17, Cordova was charged with Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A felony. He pleaded not guilty, was remanded, and is due back in court on March 6, 2023.

Suffolk County Police arrested a man Dec. 1 after he stabbed another man in Farmingdale.
John Davis-Hernandez confronted a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman who knew him, at Taco Bell, located at 1981 Broadhollow Road, and stabbed the man in the parking lot, at approximately 7:20 p.m. The victim was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Third precinct patrol officers responded to Davis-Hernandez’s home, where he surrendered. First Squad detectives charged Davis-Hernandez, 20, of Bay Shore, with Assault 2nd Degree.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

On June 30, Suffolk County Police arrested a man after he stabbed another man at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown. The stabbing occurred June 30 at approximately 2:35 p.m.

Brian O’Connor allegedly got into an argument and physical altercation with another man at a camp ground at the park. O’Connor went into his vehicle, allegedly retrieved a knife and stabbed the 60-year-old victim. The victim was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Fourth Squad detectives charged O’Connor, 62, of Middle Island, with Assault 2nd Degree. He was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 1.

On Thursday,  June 17,  a man was found dead in Port Jefferson Station at the Greenway Trail, near Clifton Place at approximately 1 a.m.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the stabbing death of a man that occurred on the trail. The body of the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the case to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392.

Suffolk detectives are continuing to investigate an incident where a teenager was stabbed in Port Jefferson Station Monday night.

Police said that following a dispute with three teenage males Sept. 14, a 16-year-old male was stabbed multiple times on the soccer field behind Boyle Road Elementary School, located at 424 Boyle Road, at around 8 p.m. Police added that the assailants then fled on foot down Bedford Avenue.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. His name was not released as he is a minor.
