Get ready for a spook-tacular afternoon of Halloween fun at the Town of Smithtown’s FREE Trunk or Treat event on Sunday, October 20th, from noon to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at Town Hall.

The event is hosted by the Town of Smithtown Youth Bureau and the Supervisor’s Office, in conjunction with various Town of Smithtown Departments, the Youth Advisory Board, Commack School District, Smithtown Central School District, Smithtown Fire Department, Smithtown Sunrise Rotary Club, Smithtown Performing Arts Center, Smithtown Chamber of Commerce and local businesses; Coldwell Banker American Homes, North Shore Psychological Services, Saladicious, Mathnasium of Smithtown and Children of America. Families are invited to enjoy a festive afternoon of trunk or treating, games, music, and plenty of Halloween fun.

“This type of community event is great fun for all family members.  It allows children to get use out of their costumes, while spending a little family time playing games and trick-or-treating in a safe location. This festive event offers a fun, safe twist on traditional trick-or-treating, allowing families to celebrate in a community setting without the need to wander through neighborhoods at dusk or in the dark. Often humorously referred to as “Halloween Tailgating,” Trunk or Treat events have become a beloved annual tradition, especially for families with young children.

How It Works: Participating town department, community members and businesses gather in the Town Hall parking lot, decorating their open trunks with creative and spooky themes. Children in costumes can visit each decorated car for treats, play games, and enjoy other Halloween activities—all in one safe, supervised location.

“Trunk or Treat” events have gained popularity for their convenience, family-friendly atmosphere, and enhanced safety. Parents can enjoy spending quality time with their kids and keep a close eye on them as they move from car to car—an experience that is often more manageable than door-to-door trick-or-treating.

This is a new tradition from the Town of Smithtown, aimed at bringing the community together for an afternoon of fun and festivities that the whole family can enjoy. There will be a canned goods collection set up to help support the Smithtown Food Pantry for those who choose to participate. Every contribution makes a difference. Be sure to mark your calendar and don’t miss out on this exciting Halloween event!

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating a house fire that killed a man in Nesconset on Oct. 15.

Fourth Precinct officers responded to 2 Highland Place after a 911 caller reported a fire at 5:25 p.m. Thomas Walz, a resident of the home, was taken out of the house by first responders prior to police arrival.

Walz, 62, was transported via ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. There were no other people in the house at the time of the fire and no other injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but does not appear to be criminal at this time.

Joshua Bozek

Joshua P. Bozek, DO, has been appointed Chief Medical Officer at Catholic Health’s St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown. Additionally, Karen T. Fasano, DNP, MBA, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, has been named Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for the hospital and will also serve in a system role as Vice President of Nursing Patient Experience for Catholic Health.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Bozek and Ms. Fasano as part of St. Catherine’s executive leadership team,” said St. Catherine of Siena Hospital President Declan Doyle. “I am confident that both Dr. Bozek and Ms. Fasano will further enhance our hospital’s mission in providing the highest quality of care to our patients.”

Dr. Bozek has a long-standing relationship with Catholic Health, having served as Systems Medical Director overseeing the Emergency Departments at St. Catherine’s and St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. In his new role, he will ensure highest standard for quality care, timeliness and appropriateness; provide clinical oversights for all performance improvement, utilization management and quality management activities; collaborate with senior management to develop new clinical programs; ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards; develop a comprehensive physician recruitment and retention strategy; and educate, supervise and monitor performance of the medical staff.

Through Dr. Bozek’s prior affiliation with Alteon Health/USACS, he oversaw four hospital emergency departments including St. Catherine of Siena Hospital, St. Charles Hospital, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital Health System, and Bayshore Medical Center. In addition, he oversaw the Hospitalist Program at Bayshore Medical Center and the House PA Program at St. Charles Hospital. During his 12 years at St. Catherine’s, Dr. Bozek held numerous roles including Chairman and Associate Director of the Emergency Department, as well as Director of Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement. Dr. Bozek was pivotal in the development and implementation of the first St. Francis Heart Center’s Chest Pain Unit at St. Catherine’s, serving as the Director for the past three years. Dr. Bozek’s career as an RN, having worked in both Medical Surgical Unit and the ICU, will also give him a unique outlook on how he can best serve St. Catherine in his new role. 

Karen Fasano

A renowned leader in the nursing field, Ms. Fasano has over 30 years of healthcare experience. In her new role as St. Catherine’s CNO, Ms. Fasano will oversee the hospital’s nursing care to patients that is in keeping with the hospital’s mission, vision and values. Ms. Fasano will also collaborate with the hospital’s executive and clinical leadership teams to develop mechanisms to ensure seamless integrated patient care systems; develop, implement and continuously evaluate programs to promote recruitment, retention and continuing education of nursing staff members; and, collaborate with nursing leadership from various clinical areas, to determine staffing requirements to effectively deliver the highest quality of nursing care to patients.  

As Catholic Health’s Vice President, Nursing Experience, Ms. Fasano will be responsible for fostering a culture of empathy and responsiveness among nursing staff. In addition, she will have a key role in creating an environment where exceptional care and positive patient experiences are paramount.

Prior to joining Catholic Health, Ms. Fasano served for the past six years, as Vice President of Patient Care Services at Central Region Hartford Healthcare, overseeing over 1,600 full-time employees between three campuses. She also served as Director of Clinical Operations for the Hospital of Central Connecticut and was accountable for the efficient operations of inpatient nursing and respiratory units between two campuses.  Earlier in Ms. Fasano’s career, she was appointed as Bristol Hospital’s Operations Manager for the intensive care unit and respiratory therapy and a year later, was promoted to Director of Clinical Operations. At other healthcare facilities in Connecticut, Ms. Fasano also held numerous roles as Director of the Cancer Service Line; Nursing Supervisor; Nursing Manager; and, Nursing Instructor.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Suffolk County Police Fourth Precinct Crime Section officers are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the man who allegedly stole items from a store in Islandia last month.

A man allegedly stole four pairs of shoes from Famous Footwear, located at 1770 Veterans Memorial Highway on September 14 at approximately 3 p.m. The merchandise was valued at approximately $120.

Suffolk County Police Third Squad detectives are investigating a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a pedestrian in Central Islip  on Oct. 12.

Hillary Day was walking on the westbound shoulder of the roadway in front of 31 W. Suffolk Ave. when she was struck by a westbound motor vehicle at approximately 9 p.m. The vehicle, believed to be a gold-colored sedan, continued traveling westbound without stopping.

Day, 66, of Central Islip, was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of serious injuries.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.

It would take five sets to determine a winner when the Commack Cougars came calling on Smithtown East Saturday morning, Oct. 5, as both volleyball teams traded victories through four sets. The Bulls were able to corral the Cougars in the final set to win the match 22-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 15-9 in the Division I matchup. 

Outside hitter Brody Bernhardt led the way for the Bulls with 15 kills and teammate Michael Pennisi notched 11.

East hosted table-topping Ward Melville, Monday, Oct. 7, but went down in three sets.

Depasquale Enterprises hosted its 3rd annual Christmas in October Village craft fair on the grounds of the Smithtown Historical Society on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The free event featured handmade items by local artisans. Over 100 vendors were in attendance, selling everything from artwork and photography to jewelry, home decor, wood crafts, and gourmet foods, each one with a story to tell.

Michael Depasquale of Depasquale Enterprises has been organizing this fair since its inception. He started his company over 40 years ago, with one event, and the business grew from there. His company now plans craft fairs, festivals and art shows all over Long Island.

“This is our third year planning the fair for the Smithtown Historical Society. After COVID, people were anxious for something to do, so we started this event with a small number of vendors and it just keeps going,” Mr. Depasquale said.

Discussing what makes this particular event special, he explained that he loves its vendors because they put so much passion into “what they do.”

“They are truly the heart and soul of our business. Customers are very supportive of us, and we [always encourage them] to shop locally,” he continued.

Working this popular fair means a great deal to its vendors for a number of reasons.

Mary Weisberg, owner of From the Heart, has been making and selling her copper jewelry for over 10 years at local craft fairs. She says she draws inspiration from her faith, and that all of her designs are anointed with “love, prayer and intention.”

“The biggest compliment I can get is people telling me how much they love my work,” Weisburg said.

Claudio DiPietri, one of the fair’s exuberant vendors, came from Astoria to be part of this special event.

DiPietri, who runs Wood Works by Claudio, was in the restaurant business for 40 years before he was diagnosed with cancer in 2019.  Having to undergo treatment, DiPietri was not able to go back to running his family’s business, which resulted in the closing of the restaurant.

“After spending so much time away from my family over the years, I wanted something that would keep me home with them, so I told my wife I was going to start working with wood,” he explained.

“And here I am five years later.”

One booth owner, Jim Smalls, lost his job after the COVID-19 pandemic, and was forced to reinvent himself to make a living. Smalls was the general manager of Sam Ash Music prior to the pandemic, but now spends his time painting and selling scenic landscape designs he creates from old tree stumps.

“I’ve never been happier,” Smalls said.

This fair’s quirky and festive feel is the reason it draws crowds from not only Smithtown, but all over the Island.

Mary Ellen Fonti of Port Jeff Station said she loves coming to the fair because “it is a true craft fair. They’re not selling store-bought knick knacks. They’re selling real, homemade items.”

Many attendees were avid crafters themselves. Maria of Farmingville shared that she enjoys making crafts and wanted to see what other crafters “were up to,” while friends Kathy Murdocco and Lydia Lehman were there simply to enjoy the “beautiful day” and the lively atmosphere.

As discussed in the paper this week, the Oct. 7 service at the  North Shore Jewish Center in Port Jefferson Station served as a coming together of humans healing from an event which rocked a nation and the world, one year ago this month.

But, it is so incredibly crucial to note that it was a group of human-beings coming together — not people of any one religion, background or gender — but people of all walks of life, who gathered on that Sunday night to comfort one another, and lend a shoulder to anyone in need of comfort.

Despite the presence of a few politicians, the night was not one of politics, but of deep empathy for anyone who lost a dear one in Israel, or community members who know someone who has.

It was a beautiful reminder that despite the complexities of what is happening in the Middle East at this moment in time, we can still congregate as a united body, purely in support of humanity.

No hidden agendas. No hatred of anybody.

People were there to hold one another’s hand, and honor the memory of those they loved, and those they had never met.

At its core, religion is about peace, love and compassion, and that was precisely what occurred that night. People of a shared faith, came together in prayer to provide their neighbors with an hour of solace.

And, we can all use some solace in these horrific times.

A call to support Frank Melville Memorial Park

To the Esteemed Residents of the Three Village Community,

I write to you today on behalf of the Frank Melville Memorial Park, a cherished haven of natural beauty and wildlife, which many of you have supported and enjoyed over the years. The park, as you know, stands as a testament to our collective commitment to preserving both the splendor of nature and a sense of peace for all visitors, human and animal alike.

However, it is with a sense of deep concern and urgency that we must address a troubling issue that has recently grown more acute: The repeated violations of our strict no-fishing policy, particularly by adults and teenagers who seem to regard this rule with a mix of indifference and defiance.

Despite clear signage and our tireless efforts to educate the public on the importance of this policy, we are witnessing an alarming frequency of insubordination. The rule against fishing is not arbitrary since it serves to protect the delicate ecosystems of the pond and surrounding habitat. Our policy reflects a profound respect for the intricate balance of wildlife that calls this park home — creatures whose survival is intimately tied to the careful stewardship of their environment. Yet, we have found our efforts met with flagrant disregard and, regrettably in some instances, with outright disrespect for the park’s mission.

These actions undermine the very fabric of what we strive to accomplish at Frank Melville Park: To maintain a sanctuary where humans and nature can coexist harmoniously. When individuals violate this fundamental policy, they not only endanger wildlife but also tarnish the atmosphere of safety and order that we work so diligently to preserve.

To address this growing concern, we are asking for your support. In order to uphold the park’s regulations and ensure a safe, respectful environment for all, we must increase our security presence. This step, while necessary, comes at a significant financial cost, one which we are unable to shoulder alone. We appeal to the broader Three Village community — those of you who value this park as much as we do — to assist us through donations, which will allow us to fund additional security measures and personnel.

Your contributions will directly support our ability to safeguard the park’s natural beauty and uphold the standards that we all hold dear. Together, we can ensure that Frank Melville Park remains a space of serenity and sanctuary, free from the disorder that threatens to erode the very essence of what makes it so special.

We trust that the community’s profound appreciation for this space will inspire a shared responsibility in preserving it. Let us act now, not only to protect the park from further harm but to honor the legacy we have inherited and ensure that it thrives for future generations.

Finding balance in Brookhaven’s development debate

I appreciated reading the letter to the editor in last week’s issue [“Brookhaven Town Board rejects suburbia”] from our neighbor, the Three Village Civic Association, regarding the recent approval by Brookhaven Town of the proposal by Staller Associates at Jefferson Plaza. Charles Tramontana and George Hoffman rightly point out the precedent-setting nature of the new CRD code the town used to approve a zoning change which will yield a density never seen before anywhere in Brookhaven. While I applaud the call for a review of a code many believe to be vague and without clear metrics as to how the density bonuses were set (and by whom), future revisions will leave Port Jeff Station/Terryville residents watching the barn door being closed after the horse has galloped away.

In our situation, we are now facing the reality of a face-changing project which can yield up to 280 apartments — nearly three times what any other multifamily development could yield. Additionally, the developer has the benefit of constructing 49,000 square feet of commercial space on this 10-acre parcel. 

Our organization has been clear and consistent for the past two years that we wanted to welcome the redevelopment of this long-neglected shopping center and are mindful of the need for attainable housing for our young people. So, our considerable efforts to identify concerns associated with this intensive proposal are intended to minimize negative impacts and not to oppose all change. 

However, we advocated many issues be addressed ahead of this zoning change which will surely change the character of our community. While some input was considered, the final product appears changed mostly around the margins. Presently, the density can be maxed out, there are still many areas with four-story buildings, first responder access and resources needs to be discussed, traffic concerns remain, as well as an architectural design providing true public spaces and sense of a place. 

Also, the price point of apartments starting at $2,200-$2,400 leaves us still figuring how to retain our young, and the public benefit many developers provide to address the impacts on a community is quite miniscule in comparison to the scope of this project. Most importantly, this large-scale development will occur without a full and comprehensive planning process to help our hamlet properly digest this growth-inducing facility along the entire Route 112 corridor.

I will note, at our request, Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich [D-Stony Brook] persuaded the town to take a look at traffic patterns which will be affected regionally — and not just site specific to Jefferson Plaza. Also, the councilmember has provided there will be a process for a visual preference survey that we suggested to guide and shape the architecture with community input. 

Kornreich has often tried to assure our area that many of our valid concerns can be addressed during the site plan review process, which will now begin. While I strongly believe our neighborhood would have been well served to have these issues ironed out in advance, I take him at his word and trust we will make a strong effort to partner with the town and hold them to that promise. It will take all our voices to shape the face of our future in a way which improves our community and I urge all my neighbors to help in this process.

A farewell to six years of growth and community

For the last six years, I have had the honor and privilege to serve as the Three Village Chamber of Commerce president. 

Together we have accomplished so many of the goals set at the beginning of my term. A complete overhaul of our monthly accounting has resulted in the chamber being in the best financial position in its almost 50-year history.

Our real accomplishments were never planned. The business community faced unprecedented challenges in March 2020. The worldwide pandemic brought initial chaos and confusion to the ever-changing governmental regulations of trying to keep the doors open for business. The Board of Directors led the charge to work with our elected officials and within a very short period of time, we were assisting our community’s businesses in these unchartered waters. This was a very difficult environment for everyone.

As a longtime board member, I can say with great confidence I am leaving the chamber in good hands as my term as president comes to an end

So many positive and rewarding activities have come to mind over the last six years. Giving to the annual George Rehn Scholarship to high school seniors as the first chamber president to graduate from Ward Melville High School — and certainly not the last. The West Meadow Beach barbecues of the past, the current golf outings and many holiday parties that brought our business community together will always be cherished. 

I want to thank my fellow board members and our executive director, Jane Taylor, for their commitment and continuous support, making this one of the best and most viable service organizations I have ever been part of.

The chamber leadership will continue to prosper under its new president, Carmine Inserra, and the current Board of Directors. I wish them well and I am here to always help to keep our business community vibrant and healthy.

I have personally enjoyed all the friendships and business networking contacts among our membership and I will look forward to my new role as president emeritus. I love this community and I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve through this wonderful organization.

I look forward to the continued success of the Three Village Chamber of Commerce.
