As I like to say to the owner of the dry cleaning shop I use, “I’m an enthusiastic eater.” I tell him that because I want to encourage him to look for spots on the clothes I am bringing him and remove them. He smiles, nods knowingly and returns my clothes spot free.

It would be nice if I could just as easily rub out those extra pounds I routinely put on. Ever since I was in my late 30s, my weight has been a yo-yo. Until then, I never thought much about what I tended to eat. I just enjoyed my food, and ate whatever appealed to me at the moment. 

As a mother and the family cook, I did try to make balanced meals: an animal protein, a starch and a vegetable at dinner, for example. That was what cooks were encouraged to provide by the Food and Drug Administration. There were even charts in doctors offices with pictures of recommended “balanced” meals that we saw and took to heart. That was dinner.

Lunch wasn’t so different. A sandwich, a piece of fruit, maybe a small bag of chips or a cookie populated my children’s lunch boxes. The sandwich could be spread with peanut butter and jelly, or perhaps, tuna fish or bologna. The fruit was usually an apple, and the dessert was a chocolate chip cookie or a couple of Oreos. 

My husband and our children didn’t have a weight problem, so why did I? And that was in spite of my being on the club tennis team and running errands for our family of five plus dog and station wagon every day. I was certainly getting exercise.

At this point, I should confess that I love pasta. I love it in any shape, with any kind of sauce, and I love a good piece of bread. I also like desserts, the sugary kind. Donuts are a favorite, preferably loaded with raspberry jelly and rolled in sugar. In fact, there probably isn’t a carb I don’t like. 

So clearly my problem was in making choices. Recognizing what I had to do, I would forsake all of the above for the better part of a year, lose the extra pounds, buy some new clothes and feel quite pleased with myself…until after a few years, none of the clothes fit and a full length mirror showed me that I was back to my former avoirdupois. That’s a fancy French word to disguise the unwanted pounds. 

And so the cycles went, until I got older and disgusted enough to resign myself just to being fat. I passed a good number of years that way.

But now, I will tell you, I have found the solution, and it’s not Ozempic. I don’t even like taking an aspirin, much less a strong medicine with scary side effects like these miracle weight-loss drugs that were actually created for other uses but apparently remove one’s appetite. 

Why would I want to do that when eating is so much fun?

I will reveal my current weight loss routine to you, and it’s incredibly simple. It came about this way. I was noticing that a couple of my children were putting on some pounds, nothing drastic but nonetheless visible additions to their otherwise sleek frames. Now they, too, are active and until recently had no major problems with weight. But as they age, it has caught up to them.

So during the last visit, when we were all together and happened to bemoan our extra pounds, my oldest son suggested what he termed a Sunday Weigh In. This could easily be done via a group text, thanks to modern technology. We would aim for a one pound loss each week, not particularly extreme, and in the process we would connect with each other on a guaranteed regular basis. How nice! We are six weeks in now, and amid lots of love and encouragement, it’s working.

Small businesses from across Suffolk County were recognized for their critical role as the backbone of the local economy.  Each of the 18 members of the Suffolk County Legislature introduced an honoree from their district at Oct. 1’s General Meeting of the Legislature in the Rose Caracappa Auditorium of the William H. Rogers Legislative Building in Hauppauge.

With this ceremony, the lawmakers honored individual businesses – with fewer than 25 employees—and noted the unique contributions to the community that these businesses and their owners make every day.  The businesses — ranging from restaurants, including pizzerias and delis, to insurance agencies, to local newspapers and salons – were each chosen for their standing within their community and were often cited for their civic and charitable endeavors.

“Our small businesses deserve to be recognized for their part in making Suffolk a thriving and desirable place to live,” said Presiding Officer Kevin J. McCaffrey.  “From my district, I am pleased to be able to honor Peter Buccino, the proud owner of Viking Solutions in Lindenhurst since 2015. He started with the company, then named Cardwell Condenser Corporation, just a week after graduating from Copiague High School in 1979. Peter then worked his way up the ladder all the way to taking ownership in 2015.”

“Peter is an active member of the business community locally and across the county. He is the First Vice President of the Copiague Chamber of Commerce, an Executive Board Member of the Lindenhurst Chamber, and a member of the North Babylon and Montauk Chambers. Peter Buccino’s smiling face can be seen at many events in the district. He is a truly a small business success and embodies the spirit of this award,” said McCaffrey.

Across the United States, small businesses employ nearly half the American workforce, representing 43.5% of America’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the US Chamber of Commerce. Suffolk County itself is home to many thousands of small businesses. As a partial measure of the number and variety of small businesses, the Suffolk County Department Labor, Licensing, and Consumer Affairs notes that there are over 15,800 active licenses and registrations for businesses. The wide range of businesses encompasses, for example, appliance repair, painters, electricians, plumbers, sign hangers, precious metal dealers, dry cleaners, and more.

On October 12, Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner met with Allison Sanders from Girl Scout Troop 1186 and her family at Sylvan Avenue Park in Miller Place.

The Councilwoman was there to congratulate Allison for attaining her Bronze Award, the highest that a Girl Scout Junior can earn. Each Bronze Award candidate must give 20 hours of community service towards the project. Allison’s “Puzzle Box” encourages people to trade puzzles. She will donate some of the puzzles and host a puzzle drive. Alison asks residents to donate any puzzles they finish and place them in the Puzzle Box.

On Sept. 24, Supervisor Dan Panico was on site to thank the Town of Brookhaven’s demolition crew as they prepared to take down a blighted house and cottage in Middle Island. This effort clears the way for the preservation of 3.5 acres of critical open space. The Town acquired the parcel along East Bartlett Road to protect it from future development and to preserve its natural state. The land is located on the boundary between the Core of the Central Pine Barrens and the Compatible Growth Area.

This heavily wooded parcel features a quarter-acre pond, rolling topography and old-growth woodlands, making it a vital component of the local ecosystem. “In Brookhaven, we have proven that a government can be effective at preservation and the protection of our environment. This latest accomplishment is in a truly beautiful and serene part of our town, containing substantial preserved open space acreage and pine barrens,” said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico.

This area serves as a natural wildlife sanctuary, home to a myriad of species. It is particularly important for migratory frogs including spring peepers, gray tree frogs and wood frogs which utilize the pond for breeding in the spring months. “In Brookhaven, our mission is to preserve where it makes sense and redevelop where appropriate. We have struck a wonderful balance and continue to achieve for our environment and economy on a daily basis,” commented Brookhaven Town Councilman Michael Loguercio.

In recent years, the Town has made significant strides in wildlife conservation. A wildlife tunnel was installed to connect the subject property to a wetland complex on the east side of the road. This tunnel is regularly used by various wildlife species including amphibians, mammals and birds, allowing them to safely cross the roadway. This initiative has virtually eliminated most roadkill in the area, demonstrating the Town’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

The removal of structures on the parcel will enable disturbed areas to return to their natural habitat while preserving the serene setting for future generations to enjoy.

With elections just around the corner, early autumn can feel like an overwhelming time.

Candidates on the national, state and local levels spew their promises, which we never actually know are genuine, and insult each other’s characters, instead of answering direct questions.

Many people have simply taken themselves out of the race, both literally and figuratively, refusing to vote, or partake in the democratic process at all anymore, after years of disillusionment.

But this election cycle, TBR implores you to hang in there.

Put community above party, and hear all of November’s nominees out. It doesn’t hurt to give them a fair shake.

Who knows? Maybe you will be surprised by something you hear, and be influenced to alter your view on an issue.

It is so incredibly appealing to jump on either party’s bandwagon, and be swept up with ad hominem attacks, sweeping generalizations and just plain-old lies. It would be a lie to say that it isn’t easier to be moved by primal emotion, than a calm, step back.

But listen. Listen to the candidates. Listen to your friends. Listen to your neighbors. Get your finger on the pulse of what your community needs, and make a choice based on that. Not preconceived notions, or one-sided vitriol. There is a reason that the saying, “go with your gut,” has survived for centuries.

With all this in mind, on Oct. 31st, we will be releasing our paper’s election supplement, in which we will share interviews with all candidates running for office, within our six coverage areas. We hope that through this process, we will aid you in your judgment process of each nominee, as we will be providing you a non-partisan, unedited look at each person’s responses, to a variety of questions, ranging from policy promises, to past actions.

In short, the way that our interviewing process works is that the two nominees, for each available seat, will come into our Setauket offices together, in which they will then answer each identical question, one after the other, and be able to participate in a type of mock debate, where ideas will be exchanged and dissected.

We hope that you will pick up a copy of one of our papers, or read online at www.tbrnewsmedia.com, for the week of Oct. 31, and use us as a tool that will help you regain a little bit of faith in the press, politics and humanity.

Suffolk County Police last night arrested a man for Leandra’s Law for allegedly driving while intoxicated in Rocky Point after he crashed a vehicle with a child passenger inside.

Edward Milano was driving a 2017 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on Lower Rocky Point Road, when the vehicle veered left at the intersection of Hagerman Landing Road, left the roadway, and crashed, at 9:18 p.m.

When police arrived, Milano displayed signs of impairment and was placed under arrest. His 6-year-old daughter, who was the only passenger in the vehicle, was transported to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson for treatment of minor injuries and released to the custody of a family member.

Milano, 36, of Rocky Point, was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law), Operating a Motor Vehicle Impaired by Drugs, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

He will be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on October 5.

The Jeep was impounded. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.

The Miller Place Panthers rained on Port Jeff’s homecoming football game under a persistent drizzle, shutting out the Royals 41-0 in the League IV matchup on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 28. 

Port Jeff (0-2) struggled offensively against a stout Panther defense and failed to gain any traction, searching for that first elusive win in this early season.

Miller Place quarterback Shane Kiernan and wide receiver Ethan Monaco were a potent combination, scoring on a 32-yard pass play and 60-yarder for the win. Kiernan passed for 202 yards, completing nine of 11 passes, during the afternoon.

The win lifts the Panthers to 2-1 and they will travel to Babylon, Saturday, Oct. 5, with a 6 p.m. kickoff scheduled.

The Royals are also back in action on Saturday, with a road game against Southampton. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.

A local food pantry is seeking out volunteers to prevent closing its doors.

For more than 40 years, the Island Heart Food Pantry in Middle Island — a mission of the Mt. Sinai Congregational Church — has served thousands of people across Long Island. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world in 2020, the pantry has not been able to fully recover after a significant loss of volunteers — all while still needing to help feed the food insecure.

Director of the pantry Kathy Lahey said that in 2023, Island Heart served 24,000 people and, prior to the pandemic, they had roughly 40 volunteers on site. They were open several days a week, which allowed those struggling to stop in and “shop” its shelves filled with fresh produce, dairy, groceries and hygiene products. However, during the pandemic, they needed to change their model to a drive-up service where volunteers would package a box of goods depending on a family’s size and bring it out to their cars outside of the building. That model still applies today, but due to the lessened number of help, they are only able to stay open one day a week. 

As of now, they are only open on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. But despite being open for just three hours, in September the pantry served 354 families — 1,604 individuals in total.

“During COVID, we were getting a lot of help from donors and it was great,” Lahey said. “But once COVID ended, the number of people in need hasn’t gone down, but the donations and volunteers have.”

Lahey said that many of the volunteers moved away, have aged out or simply decided not to come back and since then, they’ve had a hard time staffing the pantry, operating solely on a skeleton crew.

“We’re one of the biggest pantries in Suffolk County,” she added. “We’re very active and a much-needed resource so we really need people to step up and help.”

Part of the volunteer search includes the crucial role of finding someone who has a large truck or vehicle. Lahey said they are in dire need of individuals who are able to pick up food from the Long Island Cares food pantry in Hauppauge as well as donations from Trader Joe’s in Lake Grove to bring back to the pantry, unload and stock the shelves on a weekly basis. 

“I’ve reached out to colleges, high schools, but we need people involved who want to stay with us,” she added. “It takes a village. It’s not just the church — we need the community at large to come in and help their neighbors in need.”

According to Long Island Cares, 234,000 Long Islanders are food insecure with 65,000 estimated to be children. Approximately 40 percent of these households are above the poverty level, but do not make enough to keep up with the high cost of living in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. 

Paule Pachter, president and CEO of Long Island Cares, said that their food bank offers nonperishable and perishable foods focusing on 19 staples including rice, eggs, pasta, soup, peanut butter and other groceries that provide a complete and healthy meal. The organization provides food and funding to 336 agencies consisting of nearly 300 local, community-based emergency food pantries in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

“Most of our food pantries operate on a client-choice model that allows families to select the food they want. As Long Island’s regional food bank, we provide food that is ordered from our online menu, and many of our agencies recommend the foods we should purchase,” Pachter said. “Since many people struggling with food insecurity also have medical issues, such as diabetes, obesity and heart problems, it’s crucial that the food we provide is nutritious, low-fat, low-sugar, protein-rich and more.”

Lahey said that the local food banks and the donations from Trader Joe’s “have been amazing to work with.”

So, as the cooler weather approaches and the holiday season starts to creep in, donating time (or food!) is welcomed at Island Heart Food Pantry. 

“The guests are super nice and super grateful … You get to know them and their families and you feel good about yourself,” Lahey said. “You’re definitely making a difference whether it be for an hour, two or three. Whatever you can give, you’ll feel good about it at the end. Plus, it’s a lot of fun.”

Island Heart Food Pantry is located at 643 Middle Country Rd, Middle Island. Volunteers are needed to assist with their weekly food pick-up from Long Island Cares at 10 Davids Drive, Hauppauge, to the pantry in Middle Island on either Tuesday or Wednesday. A large vehicle/truck is needed. They are also in need of a Wednesday morning pick-up/delivery person around 10 a.m. from Trader Joe’s near Smith Haven Mall to the pantry in Middle Island. Both positions can be on a weekly or an intermittent basis.

Sometimes, Jillian Scully isn’t sure whether she’s dreaming that she’s practicing or she’s awake and on the field.

That’s because the Miller Place High School senior spends so much time honing her technique and trying to increase the distance she can throw a shot put and discus.

“I’ll have dreams where I’m practicing and it’s so vivid, I think I’m there,” said Scully. “I can feel the mud on my hands and the cold ball on my neck.”

The work has paid off, as Scully, who won the New York State Outdoor State Championship in shot put by over five feet in June, and set the school record in the shot put by over 12 feet, has been recruited by Division I track and field teams around the country, from UCLA to Arizona State, Colorado State University, and the University of Michigan, to name a few.

Two weeks ago, Scully and her parents James and Despina, (who goes by “Debbie,”) got up at 3 a.m. for a flight to Colorado, where they toured Colorado State University, and just last week, they visited the University of Michigan. On her college visits, coaches have given her tours of the campus and have outfitted her in university attire. Until she chooses a school, she can’t bring any of that clothing home.

“I’m expecting when I go to these schools that I’m going to have a gut feeling,” said Scully. I have a sense that I’ll know the best fit for me as soon as I step on [the right] campus.”

Scully, who is 6 feet, 1 inch tall, has found it tough to watch others train without being able to participate.

“It’s a little difficult seeing all the throwers getting to lift and throw and me being forced to watch,” Scully explained.

Scully explained that her favorite moment in a meet is when she takes her first step into the circle, which gives her a surge of confidence.

Each time she prepares to launch the ball or discus, things go “silent in my brain, the sound stops and I just throw,” she said.

A highly valued recruit, Scully started throwing shot put and discus in middle school. Ian Dowd, who coached track and field in middle school at Miller Place, recalled how Scully could sprint the fastest, jump the furthest and, as it turns out, throw a shot put remarkably far, without any training.

“She threw [the shot put] something crazy, like 25 or 26 feet, the first time she did,” said Dowd, who now coaches basketball in the Southampton School District.

Scully’s father James, who owns and runs the construction company JFS Contracting, dabbled in track when he was in high school, including throwing shot put.

“I never thought she’d have been that good,” Scully said. “I did it because I was bored and I wanted to do something.”

The younger Scully, however, who plans to study engineering when she’s not practicing or competing in Division 1 track meets, is focused and passionate about throwing the 8.8 pound shot put as well as the 2.2 pound discus.

While shorter than her 6’3” father, Scully is taller than her 5’8” mother, Debbie, who considers herself the “small one” in the house. Debbie has never tried either sport, but has picked up her daughter’s bag to move it in the house.

“It’s no wonder you’re so strong,” Scully told her daughter. “She’s walking around with a weighted vest all day long.”

Change of life

Before she discovered track and field, where she also runs the 4×100 relay, Scully, 17, was struggling.

Scully suggested that her mother gave her the “nudge” to try track.

“I was introduced to track at a certain point in my life when I was secluded from everybody,” said Scully, who was unreceptive to people and spent her free time playing video games or being unproductive.

“The person I was for however many years is not me,” Scully recalled. “I didn’t enjoy being that person.”

When she started competing in track, she felt the experience, including the camaraderie with her teammates, “clicked” and became “a part of me.” Spinning around in a small circle and throwing objects through the air became a necessary part of her mental health, and is a large part of her personality.

Hannah Kuemmel, the Athletic Trainer at Miller Place High School, has noticed the change in Scully.

“She is a lot more confident in who she is as a person and an athlete,” said Kuemmel, who also teaches a sports medicine class in which Scully sits front and center.

When she started competing in shot put and discus, she found a way to excel. “If I’m good, I might as well keep doing it,” she said. “I love it so much.”

Good isn’t the word Bill Hiney, her personal coach who has been working with her for over two years, and who has been in the field for 36 years, would use to describe her.

“I’ve often said she’s on another planet,” said Hiney, who is the Assistant Track and Field Coach during the winter and spring seasons for Southold High School.

A good female shot put thrower can reach the mid 30 feet. At 46 feet, 11 inches, Scully is throwing 10 feet further than the best female athlete Hiney has ever worked with, which puts her “in another dimension.”

Hiney describes her athletic student as the “icing on the cake in my long career. Coaches are lucky to have someone with athleticism, size and all the elements necessary to be extraordinary.”

Five squares

And, speaking of icing, the combination of her athletic training and metabolism make Scully a voracious eater, as she consumes five square meals a day.

She typically tops it off with a pint of Haagen Dazs mint chocolate chip ice cream in the evenings.

“She eats everything under the sun,” said her father, who adds that when he brings her 20 buffalo wings, she asks for another 20 so she can have a snack later.

These days, Scully, who coaches describe as tall and lean, puts her height to use in another sport, as she is an outside hitter for the varsity volleyball team, as well.

Scully’s parents appreciate how sports has given her the self-confidence and readiness to contribute to her team.

Even during track and field competitions, when she’s preparing to do her own throwing, Scully will speak with other athletes about their technique. “When Jillian was throwing against other girls, they asked her, ‘What can I do to throw better? What am I doing wrong?’” Jim Scully said. “She takes it upon herself to help all the other throwers,” and encourages them to improve.

Athletic trajectory

As well as Scully has performed in the shot put and discus, Hiney and the head coaches from universities around the country see continued growth ahead. Scully just started weight lifting this summer. “If it was karate, she’d be a white belt,” Hiney said. Well-known coaches in the field have come to watch her throw and have been impressed. Dowd believes Scully could reach an elite level if she keeps pushing herself, even climbing as far as the Olympics.

“I would love to see her with a US banner,” Dowd said. “That would be surreal.”

As for Scully’s thoughts on the matter, she would embrace an opportunity to represent her country at the Olympic games. She recalls sitting in class, and looking up how far Olympians, who competed in this past Paris Games, threw when they were her age.

“I’m trying to compare myself and set my goals,” she said. “That would be a dream for me, going to the Olympics and competing in these events.”
