Wildcats blank Mustangs 28-0

Last season, which was a year-and-a-half ago, Mount Sinai dealt Shoreham-Wading River their only loss of the regular season and the Wildcats weren’t about to let that happen again, blanking the Mustangs 28-0 on the road March 19.

Senior Johnny Schwarz found the endzone on a 36-yard pass from senior quarterback Chris Visintin and punched in again from 8 yards out for a 14-0 lead. Visintin connected with Jake Wilson on a 10-yard pass play in the 3rd quarter and found Max Barone on a 22 yarder late in the game. Jake Ekert’s foot was perfect on the night splitting the uprights all four times.

The win lifts the Wildcats to 2-0 with 3 games remaining while Mount Sinai opens their season 0-1 after they were forced to postpone their season opener due to one or more players testing positive for COVID-19.

Shoreham-Wading River is back in action in another road game against Miller Place March 26 with a 6:30 start and the Mustangs hit the road the following day against Islip. Game time is 2:00 p.m. Photos by Bill Landon

Ward Melville boys volleyball prevail in 4

Ward Melville boys volleyball started strong with Sachem East winning the opening set but fell behind in the second clawing their way back to win it by two points.

East had no intention of going quietly when they nipped the Patriots in the third match winning it 25-22 to force a game four. Ward Melville rallied back to take the fourth set to win the match 3-1 at home March 15.

Senior co-captain Bryan McCaffery led the way for the Patriots with 15 kills followed by Christopher Sohl who had five kills and five blocks, along with teammate Charlie Fernandes who served up four aces. Ward Melville took it in four sets 25-16, 26-24, 22-25 and 25-15 in the Division I matchup to lift the Patriots to 2-2 in this COVID-abbreviated season.

Centereach Cougars fall to Clippers

The Cougars of Centereach couldn’t get traction in their season opener on the road against Bellport where the Clippers struck on a 53-yard throw to Ka’Shaun Parrish who found the endzone for the early lead. The Cougars struggled to move the chains and was unable to answer when Bellport struck again in the second quarter on a Parrish 9-yard run for a 14-0 lead that held up the rest of the way.

Centereach will look to put a “W” in the win column March 20 when they’ll take on West Islip in this Covid abbreviated five game-season at home. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.

Rocky Point Eagles fell to Sayville

The Eagles of Rocky Point opened their season with a nail-biting win against Hills West that went 5 sets but had all they could handle against Sayville in a league IV matchup March 13 at home falling to the Golden Flashes 25-13, 25-18, 25-14.

Rocky Point edged ahead early in the second set but Sayville had the upper hand at net to win their first game of the season.

The loss drops the Eagles to 1-2 where they’ll look to regain their winning ways on the road against Harborfields March 18 before returning home to host Kings Park the following day. Game time for both is 4 p.m.

Kings Park volleyball sweeps Comsewogue in 3

The pedigree that is Kings Park girls’ volleyball continued its winning ways with a road win against Comsewogue where they swept the Warriors 25-11, 25-9 and 25-13 March 12.

Comsewogue briefly took the lead early in the third set before Kings Park slammed the door for a League IV win. Jackie Wolf had seven kills with nine digs, teammate Liv Benard killed nine, had one ace and four blocks.

The game was met with several spectators as Section XI has allowed two people per player remaining socially distanced to attend home games. Both teams are back in action March 16 where the Lady Kingsmen host Westhampton. First service is 5:45 p.m. The Warriors travel to Hills West with a 4:00 p.m. start.

Harborfields Tornadoes blow out Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats

The Wildcats of Shoreham-Wading River had all they could handle when visiting Harborfields Tornadoes blew the game wide open early, scoring six unanswered goals in a Division II matchup Mar. 9.

The Wildcats averted the shutout when Brooke Meltcher’s shot found its mark with 5:14 left in the third quarter. Harborfields flushed their bench spelling their starters and rocked the box once more early in the fourth quarter to take a 7-1 victory.

For both teams it was their season opener that was met with a few spectators in the stands in this COVID-19 compressed season.

Jordan Conversano led the way for the Tornadoes scoring twice with teammates Marina Bergin, Jenelle Bennardo, Amanda Quenneville, Carolena Purpura and Emma Flynn who each scored one goal apiece.

Kelsey Burke had a busy day in the box for the Wildcats with 15 saves.

Smithtown Bulls Win Season Opener, 2-0

Fall varsity sports got underway across Suffolk County in this compressed COVID-19 shortened season Monday, March 8, where the Bulls of Smithtown West hosted Newfield in a Division I field hockey matchup.

It was 41 degrees at game time and several fans could be seen in the bleachers as Section XI has lifted its spectator ban allowing two family members per player at home games, and every one must socially distance from other fans.

After a scoreless first half, Smithtown West junior Sabrina Ingrisano broke the ice with her shot on goal at the 8-minute mark of the third quarter. Newfield struggled to push up field and was unable to answer when Ingrisano rocked the box for the insurance goal with 8:52 left off an assist from Lauren Prats, her second of the game.

Newfield senior goalkeeper Kaylee Dermody had a busy day with 16 saves.

A winning streak for the Wildcats

Shoreham-Wading River dropped their season opener at home Feb. 11 against Center Moriches falling to the Red Devils by 7 points.

The Wildcats dusted themselves off and went on a 7-game winning streak that included a semi-final 64-54 victory over Mattituck the day before only to face Center Moriches in the Conference IV finals Feb. 28. Hungry to avenge that season opening loss the Wildcats stayed withing striking distance through 8 minutes of play when the Red Devils stood on the gas and never looked back, to win it 76-61.

The Wildcat seniors led the way from the opening tip off with Joey Dwyer hitting 8 field goals 2 triples and 3 from the line to lead his team with 25 points. Co-Captains Thomas Bell nailed 10 from the floor along with a pair of free throws for 22 and Tristan Costello netted 9.

Northport Tigers girls fall in basketball semifinals

Northport girls basketball struggled from the opening tip off trailing in the Conference I semi-final playoff game on the road against Longwood until Sophia Yearwood swished a 3-pointer to tie the game at 23 all, late in the second quarter. It would be the only time Northport evened the score as the Longwood Lions stretched their legs clamping down on defense to contain the Tigers the rest of the way for a 55-39 victory Feb. 27 to advance to the final round.

Northport junior Sophia Yearwood led the way for the Tigers with a field goal and three triples for 11 points. Teammates Sohpia Bica banked nine, Emma Blanco netted six and Hannah Morawski added 5.

Northport capped their abbreviated season with a 5-2 League I record and 5-3 overall.

Smithtown East Bulls fall in final seconds

The Bulls of Smithtown East struggled in the first two quarters trailing by 10 at the half in a home game, against Eastport-South Manor in their season finale Feb. 26.

Smithtown East junior forward Tristan Davis was the spark that ignited the Bulls with a two-handed monster jam to fuel a late game surge. The Bulls closed the gap to a single point in the final seconds but it was too little too late falling 62-61.

Smithtown East concluded their COVID-abbreviated season at 3-3 in League III and 4-4 overall.

Davis topped the scoring charts for the Bulls with six from the floor and three from the line for 15 points. Jack Melore, the lone freshman on the roster, netted 13, while senior George Schwab did his damage from long distance with three triples and a field goal for 11 points. Teammate Ethan Cain added eight.
