In a game that lasted five hours and 44 minutes, saw two rain delays and 11 innings, it would be the Stony Brook softball team that would come out on top. The Seawolves defeated Towson, 7-6, at Tiger Softball Field on April 30 to take the series.

Senior catcher Corinne Badger got the squad off to a hot start with a solo home run to left field in the second inning. Senior infielder Brooke Dye added another run in the second with a single to left field which plated junior outfielder Julianna Sanzone.

After the two-hour rain delay which paused the game in the middle of the fourth, junior utility Catherine Anne Kupinski stepped up to the plate in the fifth and smoked a three-run bomb to left center which brought home Alyssa Costello and Alicia Orosco which increased the Seawolves’ lead to 5-0.

The Tigers answered back with six runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Towson’s Cori Jones got the momentum started with a two-RBI double to left field. From there, the Tigers added a two RBI single, a RBI triple, and a RBI single to grab hold of a 6-5 lead.

With the game on the line in the top of the seventh, Kupinski stepped up to the dish and, once again, delivered for the squad. Kupinski singled to center to bring home Shauna Nuss to tie the contest 6-6 and head into extra innings.

In the top of the 11th inning, freshman infielder Naiah Ackerman singled up the middle which brought Emily Reinstein home and gave the Seawolves a 7-6 lead. The Stony Brook defense took care of business in the bottom of the 11th to secure the 7-6 victory and the series.

Up next, the team hosts Monmouth Hawks on May 5.

The Stony Brook men’s lacrosse team defeated Hofstra, 11-10, on April 29 at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead to secure the programs first-ever berth into the CAA Tournament.

Graduate midfielder Matt Anderson led the offensive effort for the Seawolves, tallying a career-high tying four goals. Graduate attacker Jonathan Huber and senior attacker Dylan Pallonetti each recorded a pair of goals while Will Button, Noah Armitage, and Robbie Smith all added a goal.

Stony Brook struck first within the first three minutes of the contest courtesy of Anderson who found the back of the cage off an assist from Button. However, the Pride did not stay silent for long as they responded with a goal of their own with 9:32 remaining in the first quarter. Pallonetti answered back for the squad, recording his 46th goal of the season with 5:33 left to play in the first quarter. Less than 10 seconds later, Hofstra’s Chase Patterson slid a shot past sophomore goalie Jamison MacLachlan to tie the contest at 2-2 before heading into the quarter break.

 The Pride came out of the break hot, taking a 3-2 lead within the first minute of the second quarter. This time it was Huber who tied the game at 3-3 for the Seawolves off an assist from senior attacker Blake Behlen. Stony Brook and Hofstra would continue to exchange blows for the remainder of the quarter to, once again, enter the break tied, this time at 4-4.

Coming out of halftime, it was the Seawolves on top, 5-4, as Anderson converted an assist from Behlen within the first 20 seconds of the third quarter. The squad added five more goals to take control of a 10-5 lead, their largest margin of the contest.

The Pride fought back, adding six goals of their own. However, it would not be enough as Anderson sealed the victory for Stony Brook, registering the squad’s 11th goal of the night with 12:50 remaining in the contest to secure the 11-10 win and the program’s first-ever berth into the CAA Tournament.

Up next, the team head to Newark, Del. to compete in the CAA Tournament. The squad enters as the No. 3 seed and will play No. 2 seeded Drexel in the semifinals on May 4 at 8:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on LacrosseTV.

The Stony Brook softball team run-ruled Hampton, 9-0, in five innings to win game three and ultimately take the series on April 23 at University Field.

It was all Seawolves in the series finale as the squad got off to a hot start with a solo home run in the first inning by sophomore outfielder Alyssa Costello. Junior infielder Sofia Chambers fed off of Costello’s momentum, plating senior infielder Brooke Dye in the second inning after she singled up the middle.

Costello added to her standout day with a two RBI double up the middle in the second to bring home junior outfielder Alicia Orosco and Chambers which increased Stony Brook’s lead to 4-0. Junior infielder Ashley Jacobson added a solo home run of her own in the third and sophomore catcher Emily Reinstein was able to score off a wild throw by Hampton’s catcher.

Senior catcher Corinne Badger sealed the victory for the Seawolves with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to secure the 9-0 win.

“Just going up there and thinking about getting my barrel to the ball and just trying to hit it hard to help out my teammates anyway that I can,” said junior infielder Ashley Jacobson on her successful hitting.

“Throughout the season my confidence has definitely gone up since the beginning of the season. I felt like I wasn’t really stringing good at bats together, but now that confidence is there and it fuels off of my teammates 100 percent,” said sophomore outfielder Alyssa Costello.

“We just need to keep playing good softball. We have put all three parts together in the last two games of the series, pitching, offense and defense. We are swinging at better pitches and we really want to be able to be productive through the lineup and not just rely on one person and I think it is tough when a team has to come out and really work on batters one through nine,” said head coach Megan T. Bryant.

The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team (11-3, 6-0 CAA) remains the only team left undefeated in the CAA as it topped the Towson Tigers, 14-11, on April 22 to secure the No.1 seed heading into the program’s first-ever CAA Tournament.

The Seawolves’ offense was led by senior attacker Morgan Mitchell who tallied five goals. Senior attacker Kailyn Hart and junior midfielder Ellie Masera followed behind Mitchell registering a hat trick each. Graduate attacker Jolie Creo dished out a career-high eight assists, tied for second-most assists in a single game in program history with Taryn Ohlmiller, Kylie Ohlmiller, and Claire Petersen.

Towson got off to a hot start, scoring two back-to-back early goals courtesy of Halley Koras and Lindsey Marshall. However, Stony Brook did not stay silent for long as Masera converted a woman-up goal off a helper from Creo to get the squad on the board. The Tigers would add another goal to increase their lead to 3-1 with 10:08 remaining in the first quarter.

Less than one minute later, Masera and Mitchell would score back-to-back goals of their own to tie the contest, 3-3. The Seawolves found their offensive momentum as the squad would find the back of the cage five more times to grab hold of a 8-3 lead heading into the quarter break.

Throughout the first five minutes of the second quarter, Towson found the cage two times to cut its deficit to just three. Senior midfielder Kira Accettella would add the last goal for Stony Brook before heading into halftime with a 9-6 lead.

The Tigers added another two goals coming out of the half to find themselves within one. Junior midfielder Jaden Hampel and Hart added two goals in the remaining 7:10 left in the third quarter to give the squad a 11-9 lead heading into the final 15 minutes. The squad would go on to outscore Towson, 3-2, to secure their sixth consecutive conference win, the No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament, and the 14-11 victory.

“Proud of our kids to secure the CAA, at least a share of the regular season championship and the one seed in the tournament. Towson is a great team that always brings it when we play each other. I thought we weathered the storms well and responded at opportune times. We took nearly 40 shots and most of those were high quality, so tip of the cap to their goalie who played excellent,” said head coach Joe Spallina.

The team returns home to LaValle Stadium for the regular season finale and the Battle of Long Island on Friday, April 28. Face-off is set for 6:31 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on LacrosseTV.

The No. 6 women’s lacrosse team (10-3, 5-0 CAA) controlled both ends of the field en route to a 20-6 victory over William & Mary (7-7, 3-2 CAA) on Senior Day at LaValle Stadium on April 15.

The Seawolves’ offense saw eight different goal scorers and five different hat tricks. Junior midfielder Ellie Masera led the way with four goals while seniors Kailyn Hart, Morgan Mitchell and Charlotte Verhulst and junior Jaden Hampel all recorded three goals. Graduate Kelsi LoNigro added a pair of goals.

Stony Brook struck first with a goal by Mitchell off an assist from senior Erin MacQuarrie. The Tribe did not stay silent for long as they answered back with a goal of their own with 11:55 left to play in the first quarter. William & Mary found the back of the cage for a second time within the next three minutes to take a 2-1 lead.

With 8:47 remaining in the first quarter, Hart scored her first goal of the contest to tie the contest at 2-2. Hampel and Verhulst added a goal each to give the squad a 4-2 lead heading into the quarter break. The Seawolves got off to a hot start in the second quarter, with MacQuarrie and Mitchell scoring back-to-back goals.

The second quarter was all Stony Brook as it added eight more goals throughout the remaining 13 minutes to head into halftime with a 14-3 lead. The Seawolves went on to outscore the Tribe 6-3 in the second half of the contest to run away with the 20-6 victory.

Prior to the game, the Seawolves honored their senior class, which is comprised of Kira Accettella, Ella Whitehouse, Kailyn Hart, Morgan Mitchell, LoNigro, MacQuarrie, McKenzie Mitchell, Haley Dillon, Lindsay Rongo, Lexie Correia, Shana Hecht, Hailey Duchnowski, and Verhulst.

“Senior Day is always an emotional day. I thought our players did a really good job of funneling their emotions of Senior Day festivities into another dominating conference win. For us, rebounding off a really poor performance at Rutgers Wednesday night, it was good for us to be able to play a few days later and get back on the horse a little bit. I love the senior class, it is a special group to me, they’ve been here a while. I think a bunch of them are going to wind up coming back, but they have made a tremendous impact on our program,” said head coach Joe Spallina.

“We have never moved the ball quite like we did today, and there were a lot of assisted goals today. It was great to get an assisted game into our books and be less of a dodging team. I think today really helped us,” said senior midfielder Charlotte Verhulst.

 “I think today we were just, as a whole today, all in sync. We had assisted goals, dodging goals, free position goals and I think just as a whole we were in sync with each other,” said senior attacker Morgan Mitchell.

The team is back in action on April 22, when they travel to Towson, Md. to take on Towson. Face-off is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on FloLive.

The Stony Brook tennis team earned their third victory at University Courts this season and eighth win overall as the squad defeated Sacred Heart University 4-3 at University Courts on April 8.

After being edged in doubles play, the squad overcame the deficit to take four out of the six matches in singles to ultimately take the victory. 

Pacing the squad was Chandrika Joshi and Debby Mastrodima picking up dominant wins in singles play. Joshi, a sophomore from India, earned her victory by a final of 6-2 and 6-2. Mastrodima, a first-year student from Greece, earned her win with a 6-3 and 6-0 performance. 

Also, senior Mathilde Sreeves earned a victory in singles, defeating her opponent in thrilling-fashion at 7-6 (6) and 6-1. Giving the Seawolves the team victory was first-year student Kristi Boro earning a 6-4 and 6-2 win, clinching the eighth victory of the season for Stony Brook.

“The ladies did a great job of keeping their focus after dropping such a tough doubles point,” said head coach Gary Glassman after the game. “Because of the conditions, today was more about mental toughness than it was about tennis. Big credit to the Seawolves for batting this afternoon.”

The No. 6 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team (9-2, 4-0 CAA) dominated all aspects of the game to secure a 20-5 victory over the Monmouth Hawks (8-6, 2-2 CAA) on April 7 at Kessler Stadium in West Long Branch, N.J.

The Seawolves’ offense saw nine different goal scores and three different hat tricks en route to the 20 goals scored. Junior midfielder Jaden Hampel led the way with a career-high tying five goals while junior midfielder Ellie Masera follow behind with four. Senior attacker Kailyn Hart add three goals while Morgan Mitchell and Courtney Maclay tallied a pair each.

Stony Brook wasted no time as its hot scoring began 15 seconds after the first draw courtesy of Hart. Less than one minute later, Hampel found the back of the cage to give the squad an early 2-0 lead. The Seawolves’ defense held Monmouth without a shot attempt for the first 8:30 and without a goal for the first 11 minutes of the contest.

After the Hawks got on the board, Stony Brook answered back with back-to-back goals of their own from Mitchell and Masera to enter the quarter break with a 7-1 lead. The squad came out of the break right where they left off, finishing within the first 20 seconds.

With 11:41 left to play in the second quarter, Monmouth managed to find the back of the cage for the second time thanks to Caroline Brennan. 10 seconds after the Hawks’ goal, senior midfielder Charlotte Verhulst scored one of her own off an assist from Masera to take a 9-2 lead.

The Seawolves added three more goals in the second quarter and enter halftime holding a 12-2 lead over Monmouth. The squad went on to outscore the Hawks 8-3 in the second half to ultimately run away with the 20-5 win and their fourth consecutive win and conference win.

“I’m proud of our team. We took a business like approach and took care of business early on. We checked the boxes of things we needed to accomplish, starting with the draw controls. We played unselfish offense and disciplined defense, all good signs as we head into another important week,” said head coach Joe Spallina.

The team returns home to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium to take on William & Mary on Saturday, April 15 for Senior Day. Face-off is set for 11 a.m. and the game will be broadcast live on LacrosseTV.

Stony Brook graduate midfielder Matt Anderson was in top form during the men’s lacrosse game against the Towson on April 1. With 44 seconds to play in the game and the score tied at 12-12, Anderson took a pass from senior attackman Blake Behlen and fired it into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the day, which proved to be the game-winner over the Tigers.

After Anderson’s heroic score, the Seawolves put together a stop of the defensive end of the field to seal the 13-12 victory and extend their winning streak to four games in a row. Stony Brook moves to a perfect 3-0 in CAA play and the four-game winning streak is its longest since winning four in a row last season (Apr. 5-23, 2022).

The Seawolves and Tigers traded blows all game long. Stony Brook erased an early 3-0 deficit, and the teams took a 4-4 tie into the halftime break. Senior attackman Dylan Pallonetti extended the nation’s longest goal scoring streak to 38 consecutive games with his goal at the 4:03 mark in the second quarter. The senior went on to tally four points, three goals and one assist as he notched his seventh hat trick of the season.

Anderson fueled the Seawolves offense in the second half as three of his four goals in the game came in the fourth quarter alone. Anderson tied the game up at 9-9 with 14:11 to play in the contest. He then gave the Seawolves a 12-11 advantage with his goal at the 4:43 mark. The graduate then went on to seal the win with his fourth tally of the game on the Seawolves’ final offensive possession with 44 seconds to play in the game.

On the defensive side of the field, sophomore goalie Jamison MacLachlan put forth a standout performance with 17 saves. He stood on his head time and time again for the Seawolves, which allowed Stony Brook to remain in striking distance all afternoon long.

Junior defensive midfielder Ben Morschauser caused three turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Two of his three caused turnovers came in the fourth quarter and his final one led to the Seawolves’ last possession where Anderson scored the game-winning goal.   

“I am proud of the effort from the guys. I have been part of this league for a long time and all CAA games are like this. We knew that there would be ups and downs and I am proud of how we fought to the finish. We talked about winning that last six minutes of the fourth quarter and we did, we scored three goals in the last 5:55. I am really proud of the guys for battling and never backing down,” said head coach Anthony Gilardi.

The team is back in action on Saturday, April 8, when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Drexel, at 2 p.m. The meeting will mark the first time in program history that the Seawolves and Dragons wills go head-to-head in the sport of men’s lacrosse.

Senior catcher Corinne Badger was the hero on April 2 as she launched a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Seawolves to a 3-2 win over UNCW in the series finale. The victory marked Stony Brook’s first-ever CAA home win and first walk-off win this season.

Junior outfielder Alicia Orosco led off the top of the seventh inning by reaching on an error. Senior outfielder Shauna Nuss moved Orosco over with a sacrifice bunt to put her in scoring position. Badger stepped to the plate with the chance to tie or win the game — and she did just that.

Badger crushed Kara Hammock’s 1-0 offering over the right center field fence for a two-run walk-off home run. The homer was Badger’s eighth of the season. She leads the team in home runs and ranks second in the CAA.

Stony Brook received a pair of standout pitching performances in the circle. Junior Mia Haynes got the start and went the first 5.0 innings. Haynes surrendered seven hits and allowed one run (earned) and struck out three. Melaas earned the win in relief as she went 2.0 innings and gave up one run (earned) and struck out two.

“It was a terrific ball game, and I am so proud of the way we fought and played. Any time that we win it’s big and any time we win a CAA game it’s big. To be able to continuously get better within this series from game one, to game two, to game three it really shows growth from our team,” said head coach Megan T. Bryant.

After falling behind 5-0 in the first quarter, the Stony Brook men’s lacrosse team went on to outscore Monmouth, 15-7, en route to its third win in a row to improve to 2-0 in CAA play in West Long Branch, N.J. on March 25. The Seawolves were paced by senior attackman Dylan Pallonetti who recorded seven points (six goals, one assist) and his 100th career goal in the victory.

Pallonetti ended Monmouth’s early 5-0 run when he scored back-to-back goals for the Seawolves over the final three minutes of the first quarter to make it 5-2 in favor of the Hawks after the first 15 minutes of play. From there, the Seawolves and Hawks played a back-and-forth second quarter, which saw Stony Brook outscore Monmouth, 6-3, in the frame and the teams were knotted up at 8-8 at the break.

Leading the attack in the first half was Pallonetti and senior attackman Blake Behlen. Pallonetti finished the first half with a hat trick and an assist, while Behlen got on the board twice with a pair of goals.

Stony Brook’s offense continued to click in the second half with Pallonetti at the helm of the attack. The senior scored another three goals over the final 30 minutes as he finished the game with his second six-goal performance of the season.

With the game tied up at 11-11 with 10:31 to play in the fourth quarter, Pallonetti rattled the cage for the fourth time in the game and it was the 100th goal of his career. The crucial goal put Stony Brook up 12-11 and it never looked back as it went on to outscore Monmouth, 4-1, down the stretch as it held on to win, 15-12.

Defensively, the Seawolves stifled the Hawks as they held them to just four goals on 16 shots in the second half. Sophomore goalie Jamison MacLachlan and senior defenseman Michael Sabella anchored a strong effort on the defensive end for the Seawolves.

MacLachlan made nine saves in the cage, six of which came in the second half. Sabella made big plays for the Seawolves time and time again as he was blanketed all over Monmouth’s top scorer Cade Stratton who scored just two goals in the game and none of which came while Sabella was guarding him man-to-man.

The three-game winning streak is the longest of the season for the Seawolves as they improved to 2-0 in conference play. It is the first time since 2018 that Stony Brook has started conference play 2-0.

“I am proud of the team for sticking to the plan and not panicking after going down 5-0 to start the game. The bench was electric and helped us bring the juice as we chipped away at the lead,” said head coach Anthony Gilardi. 

“I thought Dylan was fantastic again and I am so pumped for him on getting his 100th career goal in a big moment when we needed it. Every game in this league is a battle and we look forward to getting back to work on Monday as we prep for our first CAA home game against Towson,” he added.

The team returns to LaValle Stadium on April 1 to take on Towson in its first-ever home CAA game.
