Seawolves Defeat Hornets and Blue Hose in a Pair of Five-Set Thrillers

It was a dominant opening day for the Stony Brook volleyball team as they picked up a pair of five-set victories over Delaware State and Presbyterian at the JMU Invitational on Aug. 30.  The non-conference wins improved Stony Brook’s overall record to 2-0 on the young season.

Offensively, Kali Moore secured double-doubles in both matches to help propel the team past the Hornets and Blue Hose, while Leoni Kunz tallied herself a double-double against Delaware State. Contributing to their success, Torri Henry recorded 91 total assists throughout the two-match day.

The Seawolves began match one trading set wins with Delaware State before finishing it off in the final deciding set. The squad would end on a high note, scoring first and never trailing to secure the victory by a match-high 10-point lead. Kunz (.429) and Moore (.208) led the attack with 20 kills apiece, as Henry totaled 49 assists, Julia Patsos added 26 digs, and Mercedes Motton tied her career-high with seven blocks.

Identical to the first match, Stony Brook and Presbyterian went back-and-forth in their efforts. In the fifth set, the Seawolves once again took the lead and did not falter, closing out the match with a 15-8 deciding score. Moore (.227) had a team-high 23 kills as rookie outside hitter Quinn Anderson (.231) tallied 13 of her own. Ashleigh Woodruff (.450) added a career-high 10 kills against the Blue Hose. Henry led with 42 assists and 31 digs to round out the squad.

MATCH 1: STONY BROOK – 3, DELAWARE STATE – 2 (25-18, 25-27, 25-20, 23-25, 15-5)

  • This marked the third time in program history that the teams went head-to-head and the first time since October 23, 2015. The Seawolves improved to 3-0 all-time against the Hornets, and today being the first match to go five sets.
  • Junior outside hitter Kali Moore registered a double-double with a team-high 20 kills on .208 hitting. She also totaled 13 digs, three blocks, and a pair of assists.
  • Graduate student outside hitter Leoni Kunz also recorded a double-double, the 15th of her career, with a team-high 20 kills on .429 hitting. She added 12 digs, four blocks, and one assist.
  • Reigning CAA Setter of the Year Torri Henry recorded 49 assists in the victory and had a match-high four aces.
  • Graduate student libero Julia Patsos led the Seawolves with 26 digs.
  • Sophomore middle blocker Mercedes Motton tied her career-high with seven blocks.
  • Graduate student middle blocker Abby Campbell had a team-high three aces in the win.

MATCH 2: STONY BROOK – 3, PRESBYTERIAN – 2 (25-16, 14-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-8)

  • This was the first meeting between the Seawolves an Blue Hose in program history.
  • Moore registered her 21st career double-double with 23 kills and 24 digs. She also had three aces, one assist, and one block in the victory.
  • Outside hitter Quinn Anderson led all freshman with 13 kills.
  • Kunz contributed with 12 kills, seven digs, two blocks, and one assist.
  • Sophomore middle blocker Ashleigh Woodruff added a career-high 10 kills.
  • After tallying 49 assists in the first game, Henry dished out a match-high 42 assists and 31 digs. She also had four aces, one kill, and one block.
  • Freshman libero/defensive specialist Zayda Fuertez dug 15 balls in the victory for the Seawolves.

“Starting off the season competing in back-to-back five set matches is incredibly tough,” head coach Kristin Belzung noted postgame. “I thought we fought to adapt throughout both matches and am proud of our fight. To have so many people step up and contribute is something that will be a strength of ours this season.”

NEXT UP
The Seawolves are back in action Aug. 31 as they face off against invitational host James Madison University at 12:00 p.m. This will be only the second meeting between these two teams in program history, as the Dukes earned a straight sweep back in 2019.

The Stony Brook University men’s track and field program finished seventh at the 2024 CAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Elon N.C. on May 12. 

Collin Gilstrap won the 1,500-meter, finishing with a time of 3:44.33. He was Stony Brook’s lone event winner. George Franks took second place in the 400-meter, setting a new school record with a time of 45.88. He also finished seventh in the 200-meter. 

Evan Brennan placed second in the 10,000-meter with a time of 30:39.11. Michael Fama finished fourth in the 10K (31:19.09). Carlos Santos produced podium finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (2nd, 8:55.79) and 5,000-meter (3rd, 14:42.22). Shane Henderson and Brennan also notched top-eight finishes in the 5,000-meter to earn points.

The Stony Brook University women’s track and field program finished 11th at the championships. Fiona McLoughlin completed the 10K in 35:55.39, placing second and earning a silver medal. She also finished seventh in the 5,000-meter (16:44.30). Grace Weigele placed fourth in the 5K, running it in 16:16.06 to pace a quartet of Seawolves competing in the event. Rebecca Clackett took fifth in the 1,500-meter with a time of 4:34.05. Danella Dawkins earned a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (14.33). The women’s 4×100 relay quartet took seventh and the 4×400 relay quartet finished in eighth place.

“Really pleased with the effort our teams gave over the two days. The majority of our group that were expected to make the finals did; those that were seeded high in their particular event also got the job done. Obviously Collin and George were outstanding, showed great competitiveness and maturity for freshmen. Evan and Fiona battled hard in the 10,000m then came back on day two to score in the 5K’s,” head coach Andy Ronan noted. “Carlos produced two podium performances in the steeplechase and 5000m, again showing his determination to produce quality results for his team.”

“Our team placings are not where we want to be; we are in a very competitive conference, but with time and support we can build with George and Collin to be more competitive as an overall team,” Ronan added.

The Stony Brook baseball team fell to the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens, 10-5, in the final home game of the season for the Seawolves at Joe Nathan Field on May 12.

Prior to the game, the Seawolves honored their 2024 senior class (Evan Fox, Ryan Micheli, Matt Brown-Eiring, Quinlan Montgomery, and Brendan Pattermann) who have made lasting impacts on the program over the course of their careers. Their hard work, dedication, and contributions have and always will be greatly appreciated. 

Graduate student Ty Saunders (2-5) got the ball to start for Stony Brook (24-25, 12-12) and took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits over his 3.0 innings of work. Freshman Nicholas Rizzo allowed four runs over his 5.0 innings of work, while Montgomery allowed one run in the final inning of play. 

In the batter’s box, the Seawolves were led by Fox, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and three RBI. The home run for Fox marked his 200th career hit and third bomb of the season. Brown-Eiring compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Johnny Pilla also contributed for Stony Brook, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate. 

Saunders and the Seawolves kept the Fightin’ Blue Hens off the scoreboard in the first two innings of play. The right-hander stranded two runners in the first inning and followed with a 1-2-3 second inning for Stony Brook. However, Delaware got to Saunders in the third by tallying four runs, including a three-run shot from Loynd to give the road team a 4-0 advantage. 

Delaware kept the offensive attack on Stony Brook by scoring a run in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth inning to go up 8-0. After Rizzo held Delaware scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning, the Fightin’ Blue Hens would score a run in the eighth to take a 9-0 lead. But, the Seawolves offense would get to work in their half of the eighth inning by tallying five runs in the inning to cut the deficit to 9-5. 

Beginning the charge in the eighth inning rally was Matt Miceli and Cam Santerre reaching on a hit by pitch and drawing a walk. With two runners on base, Fox mashed his 200th career hit by leaving the left field fence, making the score 9-3. Following the single from Pilla, Brown-Eiring would come up with his team-high sixth home run of the season that cut the Delaware lead to 9-5. 

The road team would capture another run in the top of the ninth and left a Seawolf runner on base in the final inning to ultimately  secure the 10-5 victory. 

Up next, the team returns to the diamond on May 16 as they head to Boston to battle Northeastern in a three game set. First pitch for the final CAA series of the season is slated for 2  p.m. and can be streamed live on FloBaseball.

For the second year in a row, the No. 14 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team has won the CAA Championship after defeating the No. 2 seed Drexel, 9-6 on May 4. With the win, the Seawolves earn their 11th straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a streak that dates back to the 2013 season and they extended their season-long winning streak to 12 games in a row.

Stony Brook captured its 10th conference championship title in program history (two CAA, eight America East) and won its ninth at home inside Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

The Seawolves were fueled by a standout defensive effort en route to victory as they limited the Dragons to just six goals, 15 shots, and eight shots on goal. In addition, the Stony Brook defense forced 18 turnovers and held Drexel’s top scorer Corinne Bednarik to just one goal and a season-high seven turnovers.  

 After trailing 2-0 midway through the second quarter, Stony Brook senior defender Clare Levy charged towards goal with a full head of steam and found the back of the net for the Seawolves’ first goal of the game. The Stony Brook crowd erupted when Levy scored, and it gave the Seawolves the momentum that it needed to close out the first half.

Drexel took a narrow 3-2 lead into the halftime break after the teams traded goals to close out the second quarter. Stony Brook took control of the game in the second half and used a 6-0 run to take the lead and never looked back.

The run was fueled by five different goal scorers as Ellie Masera (scored twice), graduate attack Kailyn Hart, graduate midfielder Charlotte Verhulst, graduate midfielder Erin MacQuarrie, and graduate attack Morgan Mitchell all tallied goals over the run.

Masera led all players with a game-high three goals to pace the scoring for the Seawolves. Hart registered a pair of goals for her 15th multi-goal performance of the season and 11th in a row. The aforementioned Levy, Verhulst, Mitchell and MacQuarrie all tallied one goal apiece.

 Verhulst helped the Seawolves win the battle for the draws as she recorded a season-high seven draw controls, which allowed Stony Brook to out-draw Drexel, 12-5. Masera added a pair of draw controls and set the Seawolves’ single-season record for most draw controls with 136. The senior moved past Kerri McCarthy, who previously held the record with 135 draw controls in 2018.

Defensively, Hines continued her dominance as she caused five more turnovers and she too set a Stony Brook single-season record. With her 60 caused turnovers, Hines moves past Brook Gubitosi (55 in 2017) for the most caused turnovers in a single season in program history.

Four Seawolves earned All-Championship Team honors for their standout play in the tournament. Masera, Verhulst, Hart, and Levy were named members of the All-Championship Team, with Masera taking home the Most Outstanding Performer honor.

Head coach Joe Spallina is now 21-1 in conference tournament games as Stony Brook head coach and the Seawolves have won 20 consecutive conference tournament games under him.

“What a crazy game, right? I’m really happy for our players,” said Coach Spallina postgame. “Drexel came in and played a hard game. … I’m proud of how our players responded. Defensively I thought we were phenomenal the entire game, and I thought we played really good offense. For the seniors to go out with a win at LaValle Stadium, that’s apropos,” he said.

Up next, the team is set to take on MAAC Champion Niagara in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament in Syracuse on May 10, at 2 p.m., as announced during the Selection Show on May 5. The winner of the first round matchup will face No. 3 seeded Syracuse on May 12.

The Stony Brook University softball team defeated North Carolina A&T, 2-1, on May 4 in the regular season finale. The Seawolves won their sixth consecutive series over a conference opponent and secured the No. 3 seed in the 2024 CAA Championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Seawolves put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Stony Brook pushed across a run on a single from Catherine Anne Kupinski, scoring Alyssa Costello from second base.
  • After the Aggies rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Seawolves came back to retake the lead in the seventh inning. Katherine Bubel came across to score on an error after Alicia Orosco put the ball in play, which brought the Seawolves lead to 2-1.
  • After allowing a lead-off single to start the seventh, Ashton Melaas stranded the tying run on base by retiring the next three hitters.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Stony Brook closes the regular season with 34 wins, its most since the 2014 season.
  • The Seawolves earned their 18th road win of the season, tied with Boston U., Marist and Oklahoma State for the most in the NCAA. Stony Brook’s 18 road wins are a program record.
  • The series win is Stony Brook’s sixth consecutive. The victory clinched the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament.
  • Melaas picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Stony Brook. She threw 3.2 shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing one walk and striking out seven. The win was her 10th of the season and eighth in CAA play.
  • Mia Haynes started the ballgame, tossing 3.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.
  • Kupinski recorded Stony Brook’s lone RBI of the game.
  • Naiah Ackerman and Alyssa Costello registered a pair of hits apiece.

“It was great for us to win the game and the series, and to improve in several areas from Friday to Saturday,” head coach Megan T. Bryant said. “Mia and Ashton combined to give us a chance to win, and our defense was outstanding. We are proud of our regular season and now look forward to the tournament next week.”

The Stony Brook men’s lacrosse team fell to Hofstra, 11-9, on April 27 at LaValle Stadium. Nick Dupuis led the Seawolf offensive attack with a team-high five points.

The Seawolf defense held strong early, forcing two consecutive shot clock violations in the opening five minutes. Two minutes later, Hofstra broke through with two goals in 30 seconds to take a 2-0 lead with 8:58 remaining in the first. Both teams traded two goals apiece to end the opening quarter as the Pride took a 4-2 lead into the second.

Stony Brook opened the scoring in the second with a bang following a man-down goal from Christian Lowd to make it a 4-3 game. After some tough defense and clutch goalkeeping on both sides, Hofstra tallied back-to-back in the final minutes to take a 6-3 lead into the half.

The Seawolves cut the deficit to two again with a goal from CJ Harris to open the second half scoring. The Pride immediately answered with a goal less than two minutes later to take a 7-4 lead. Each team notched a goal to close the third, as Hofstra took an 8-5 lead into the fourth.

The Pride offense came out hot to open the fourth, scoring two of the quarter’s first three goals, giving them a 10-6 lead with 6:52 remaining. After an illegal body check from Hofstra, Stony Brook scored three straight man-up goals to make it a one-goal game with 2:36 remaining. The man-up offense was spearheaded by goals from Noah Armitage, Dylan Pallonetti, and the playmaking of Dupuis. Hofstra responded a little over a minute later with a goal as its defense held strong for the win. 

“I’m disappointed for the seniors. It was such a large group of seniors that have been through a lot and have given us a lot,” head coach Anthony Gilardi said. “We’ve struggled all year, I think that’s been the reality. It’s kind of been the same story and we saw it again today.”

The Stony Brook University softball team beat Elon, 8-1, in the series finale on April 28 at University Field. The Seawolves honored its senior class of 10 student-athletes with a convincing win over the Phoenix to earn their fifth straight series win.

The Seawolves fell behind early, 1-0, in the second inning on a run-scoring single off of Mia Haynes.  Stony Brook hit a pair of home runs in the home half of the second inning on the way to scoring four runs in the frame. Emily Reinstein opened the scoring with a two-run shot and later it was Alicia Orosco who blasted a two-run homer of her own to put Stony Brook ahead 4-1. 

Saddled with a lead, Haynes began to cruise. On top of her excellence in the circle, Stony Brook’s defense put on a clinic behind her, turning two double plays to help keep Elon off the board for the remainder of the afternoon.

The Seawolves expanded their lead in the fourth inning with a pair of bases-loaded walks drawn by Corinne Badger and Julianna Sanzone. Leading 6-1, Stony Brook added two more in the fifth inning on productive outs by Orosco and Kyra McFarland. The score held for the rest of the game, as Stony Brook coasted to the 8-1 win on senior day.

“Pretty special ballgame to send our seniors off with a hard-earned win on senior day,” head coach Megan T. Bryant said. “I thought we played well in all three parts of the game and Mia was outstanding.”

Up next, the team hits the road to face North Carolina A&T in the final weekend of the regular season. The Seawolves and Aggies play a three-game set beginning on May 2 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Stony Brook tennis team ended the regular season with a bang on April 20, securing a 6-1 victory over Queens College. The home victory over the Knights marked head coach Thiago Dualiby’s first career win at University Courts.

 The Seawolves took two of three doubles games to record the point, with Mia Palladino and Elena Lobo-Corral teaming up for a win in game one. Cornelia Bruu-Syversen and Darian Perfiliev took game three to win the clinching point.

Stony Brook then took five of the six singles matches, with Palladino, Lobo-Corral, Bruu-Syversen, Sara Medved, and Debby Mastrodima winning their matches.

“We competed well and were able to handle difficult moments with poise today,” said head coach Thiago Dualiby. “It was a positive way to end the regular season. To play at home and show grit with great support after being on the road the whole season was fantastic.”

Up next, the team will travel to North Carolina for the CAA Championship Tournament, which will take place from April 24 to 28. The Seawolves’ opening matchup is yet to be determined and will be announced at a later date.

Pitcher JT Raab fanned seven Towson hitters over nine innings of work to help lead the Stony Brook Seawolves over the Tigers 4-3 on April 21 at Joe Nathan Field, securing the weekend sweep over the Tigers. 

In addition to his seven strikeouts, Raab (4-1) tossed nine innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits and walking none for Stony Brook (20-17, 9-6).

On the offensive side, the Seawolves were paced by Johnny Pilla going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Also, Ryan Micheli, Cam Santerre, and Erik Paulsen all tallied an RBI in the victory. 

Raab was dealing early this afternoon as he struck out three of the first four batters that he faced in the four inning. Following the 1-2-3 frame in the second for Raab and stranding a Tiger runner on-base in the third inning, the Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fourth.

However, Stony Brook responded right back with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1. Pilla started the rally with a double to the opposite field, and ultimately scored later in the inning from a sac-fly off the bat of Ryan Micheli. 

The game remained tied until the very next inning, when the Seawolves got going again on offense. Stony Brook plated two runs off of Towson pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of E. Paulsen, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the home team. 

Towson narrowed Stony Brook’s lead to 3-2 before the Seawolves stretched the advantage to 4-2 in the seventh inning. With two outs in the inning, the Seawolves put together three consecutive walks from B. Paulsen, Micheli and Santerre that brought home E. Paulsen. 

In the eighth inning, the right-hander for Stony Brook sat down all Tigers in-order and surrendered a run in the ninth but held on for the complete-game victory. 

The team returned to the diamond on April 23 as they hosted Manhattan for a non-conference battle. Results were not available as of press time.

Stony Brook softball completed a three-game sweep of Hofstra, defeating the Pride, 7-1, on April 14 at Bill Edwards Stadium in Hempstead. The win is Stony Brook’s 11 straight overall and the ninth consecutive in CAA play.

Mia Haynes got the win for Stony Brook. The right-hander went the distance on Sunday, giving up one run on seven hits, with four walks and six strikeouts.

Naiah Ackerman, Corinne Badger and Kyra McFarland all plated a pair of runs in the victory, while Alyssa Costello and Catherine Anne Kupinski tallied multiple hits at the dish.

Hofstra struck first on Sunday on a first-inning homer. Stony Brook was held scoreless for the opening three frames before breaking through in the fourth inning. Kupinski and Badger doubled to begin the frame, tying the game at 1-1. Ackerman singled Badger home to give Stony Brook its first lead before Costello came up with a two-out hit that padded the Seawolves’ lead to two runs.

The Seawolves tacked on insurance runs in the fifth, with Badger and Ackerman producing a run each in the frame.

Stony Brook held Hofstra without a run before expanding their lead to 7-1 the following inning. The Seawolves added two to their tally on McFarland’s two-run, inside-the-park  home run in the sixth.

Haynes closed the door, completing what she started to earn her 10th victory of the season and the second of the weekend.

“This was a true team win with so many players contributing to the final outcome,” head coach Megan T. Bryant said. “Mia showed what a tough competitor she is, and her team backed her up offensively and defensively. What an important series this was for us. We went out with a great approach, taking one game at a time, to earn the sweep.”
