Smithtown East Bulls fall in final seconds

The Bulls of Smithtown East struggled in the first two quarters trailing by 10 at the half in a home game, against Eastport-South Manor in their season finale Feb. 26.

Smithtown East junior forward Tristan Davis was the spark that ignited the Bulls with a two-handed monster jam to fuel a late game surge. The Bulls closed the gap to a single point in the final seconds but it was too little too late falling 62-61.

Smithtown East concluded their COVID-abbreviated season at 3-3 in League III and 4-4 overall.

Davis topped the scoring charts for the Bulls with six from the floor and three from the line for 15 points. Jack Melore, the lone freshman on the roster, netted 13, while senior George Schwab did his damage from long distance with three triples and a field goal for 11 points. Teammate Ethan Cain added eight.

Comsewogue Warriors stay victorious

The Comsewogue Warriors extended their winning ways with another victory at home snaring the visiting Cougars of Centereach 73-61 to extend their league IV record to 3-0, 4-0 overall.

Liam Gray led the way for the Warriors nailing 3 triples, 4 field goals and 14 out of 16 from the charity stripe for a team high of 31 points. Matt Walsh followed with 3 treys of his own, 3 field goals and 5 from the line for 20 points along with teammate Anthony Chmela who netted 16.

Chris Cartolano was the offensive spark for the Cougars hitting eight from the floor 2 triples and a pair of free throws for 24 points. James Kiernan banked 14 and Riddick Drab tacked on 6.

In this Covid abbreviated season Comsewogue retakes the court hosting Deer Park on Feb. 23 before concluding their regular season on the road against Bellport.

Centereach searches for that elusive first win in their season finale on the road against West Islip Feb. 23.

Smithtown Bulls outrun Huntington Blue Devils

Smithtown West needed the win in order to stay ahead of crosstown rival Smithtown East for sole possession of second place in the League 3 standings, and the Bulls did that handily at home downing the Huntington Blue Devils, 55-38, on senior night Feb. 23.

The Bulls have one game remaining against Copiague Feb. 25 and will need that win to make the post season which begins Feb 27.

Patrick Burke, the 6’6” sophomore, sat atop the scoring chart for the Bulls with six field goals for 12 points. Tyler Anderson, a junior, banked nine; senior Jack Driscoll netted nine; and Luke Jimenez, a senior, added eight. With the win, Smithtown West improves to 4-1.

Huntington junior Max Rentsch led the Blue Devils in scoring with 14 points followed by teammate Chad Rowe who banked six. Adrian Brooks and Kevin Drake netted five points apiece. The loss drops the Blue Devils to 1-4 with two games remaining.

Miller Place Panthers fall to Islip

It was senior night for Miller Place in a League VI matchup where despite a late game surge the Panthers fell to visiting Islip 55-42 Feb. 22.

The quartet of seniors topped the scoring chart for the Panthers with Charlie Byalick leading the way with 3 triples 2 field goals and three from the line for 16 points. Kyle Callahan scored a three pointer and 3 field goals for 9 points, Vincent Maronski followed with 7 and Matt LoNigro banked 6.

In a COVID-shortened schedule the Panthers will conclude their season with a road game at Bayport-Blue Point Feb 24, the results of which were unavailable at press time.

Smithtown West Bulls trample Newfield Wolverines

The Bulls of Smithtown West were able to hold off Newfield despite a late game surge by the Wolverines, to cap a 55-45 road victory Feb. 20. The win lifts Smithtown West to 3-0, 4-0 overall for second place, one game behind Hills East for the League III title chase. Newfield falls to 0-3 in league in this COVID-19 shorted season.

Tyler Anderson topped the scoring chart for the Bulls with five field goals, a triple and three from the line for a team high 16 points followed by teammate Patrick Burke who banked 9 to go along with 9 rebounds.

Newfield senior Ziggy Hoe stood atop the leaderboard for the Wolverines with 12 points, Michael Agostino netted 9 and Jordan DeJesus tacked on 7. Teammates Isiah Brown the senior and junior Hamza Yousef banked 6 points apiece.

Both teams have three games left that they’ll play in five days-time before post season play gets underway Feb. 26.

Port Jefferson Royals sting Bridgehampton Killer Bees in a blowout victory

Five games played, five wins for the Port Jefferson Royals.

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, the Royals defeated the Bridgehampton Killer Bees 63-21, their second victory over Bridgehampton in three days.

“It’s been two weeks of just craziness, trying to get things in, a whole new system,” Port Jefferson head coach Pete Meehan said postgame. “It’s been my most enjoyable two weeks of the past year.”

Sophomore guard Drew Feinstein continued his scorching hot start to the season, scoring 20 points, including an empathic dunk halfway through the first quarter to put the Royals up by 10. Port Jefferson’s second-leading scorer, John Sheils, chipped in 10 points during the victory.

“He’s [Feinstein] an extremely talented player,” Meehan said. “There’s no doubt he’s a weapon… He’s tremendously unselfish. They’ve all bought into what we’re doing.”

Feinstein’s 20 points against Bridgehampton dropped his season average of points per game to 24.2.

The Killer Bees were led by Kristopher Vinski, who scored seven points during the contest, and Alex Davis, who added six.

Port Jefferson (5-0) looks to continue their perfect season when they head to Smithtown Christian on Friday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. Bridgehampton (0-5) heads home seeking their first win of the season as they take on Shelter Island on Friday at noon.

Northport Tigers lose a heartbreaker at the buzzer

With 11 seconds left in regulation, the Northport Tigers boys basketball team clung to a 1-point lead hoping to run out the clock on the road against Bay Shore Feb. 16. But the 1-point victory was not to be, when Bay Shore grabbed an offensive rebound, passed to Jamari Smith-Elie who drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to snatch a 46-44 win.

Northport tasted its first defeat of the season having handily defeating Lindenhurst 80-31 in their season opener and besting Central Islip 55-40 Feb. 15.

Northport senior Patrick Healy scored 3 from the floor, a triple and 3 from the stripe to lead the Tigers with 12 points. Jason Ahlstrand followed with 11 and teammates Nicholas Watts and Jake Santamaria banked 8 points apiece.

In this COVID-19 abbreviated season, the Tigers have five games left in the next eight days as the regular season wraps up Feb. 25, before post season play begins.

Patriots pick off Central Islip

The Ward Melville Patriots boys basketball team dusted off the cobwebs in their season opener at home where they hosted Central Islip in a League I matchup Feb. 12. Trailing by three to open the second half, the Patriot offense sprang to life led in part by senior Ben Shank and Tommy Ribaudo, a junior, outscoring CI by 12 points giving up six in the fourth to win the game, 63-60.

Shank and Ribaudo topped the scoring chart with 18 points apiece, senior Jason Flynn banked seven, juniors Tommy Engel tacked on six, and Frank Carroll banked five.

Ward Melville head coach Alex Piccirillo said the key to the game was patience.

“We knew that if we could that if we could slow the pace down and take care of the basketball that we would win the game,” Piccirillo said. “We knew that if we could box out one more time (in the final minute), we would win on the rebound. We’d get on the free throw line and ice the game from there.”

Ice the game they did.

With a COVID-19 shortened season, Piccirillo was grateful that his team would see any playing time this season.

“I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank all of our administration at Section XI for allowing us the opportunity to get back on the court, with all of the safety measures in place and allow us to get this done for the kids it’s an amazing opportunity for them,” said the coach.

With the abbreviated season, the Patriots will play their remaining six games in eleven days-time before playoff season begins Feb. 26.

East Hampton Bonackers unable to tame Mount Sinai Mustangs

After over a year off due to COVID-19 —371 days to be exact — the Mount Sinai Mustangs varsity basketball team brushed the dust off their jerseys on Tuesday night, as they easily defeated the East Hampton Bonackers 66-41.

“Kids missed it, we missed it, we love being in the gym. We weren’t able to be in the gym during the offseason,” Mount Sinai head coach Ryan McNeely said postgame. “From the first day after tryouts where we were back in the gym, you could feel the energy and excitement of the kids. This was great for them.”

For the first half, the Bonackers were one step behind the Mustangs, as Mount Sinai led 27-22 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Mustangs unleashed an offensive barrage that East Hampton could not contain as the deficit grew from five to 21 points.

“In the first half, you could see we were a little rusty to start off the game,” McNeely said. “All of the sudden, we started getting things clicking at once.”

Thomas Frycek and Mitchell Cumings led Mount Sinai’s high-powered offense.

Frycek scored 25 points while hitting seven shots from beyond the three-point line, and Cumings chipped in 13.

The Bonackers were led in scoring by Topher Cullen and Luke Reese, who scored 13 points apiece.

The Mustangs have a practice scheduled Wednesday before they head to Sayville for a game on Feb. 11, while East Hampton heads home for a bout with Miller Place the same day.

Smithtown East Bulls beat Huntington in opener of shortened season

It has been almost a full 12 months since Tristan Davis, and the Smithtown East boys varsity basketball team, have taken to the hardwood in a game that actually counted.

Despite the layoff, Davis showed not one bit of rust.

The 6’5” junior forward led all scorers with 16 points in the Red Bulls 49-43 victory over the Huntington High School Blue Devils on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at home. He also dominated on the glass and around the rim with 12 rebounds and 7 blocked shots.

“It feels great to be out here again,” Davis said. “It was great to start the season with a win.”

Two of his points came on a monster slam dunk in the second quarter.

“That dunk was fun,” Davis said. “I hope it’s the first of many.”

Smithtown East Coach Al Chandler was pleased with Davis’ offensive output. But he was even more impressed with how active he was in disrupting Huntington’s attack.

“Tristan has worked really hard to get where he is,” said Coach Chandler, who has been part of the Smithtown East program for close to three decades. “His timing is great when it comes to blocking shots. He took them (Huntington) out of what they wanted to do on offense, and he stayed out of foul trouble. I was really happy with how he played today.”

Senior Forward Tom Berdon chipped in 12 points, shooting 55% from the field and guards Ethan Cain and Jack Melore each sunk a pair of three pointers, both finishing with 6 points. Melore is a freshman. The Bulls opened up a double-digit lead early in the second half and held that lead until the final two minutes. The Blue Devils made a late run by forcing turnovers to cut the lead to six but got no closer.

“We need to protect the ball better there and finish,” Chandler said. “We have some work to do, but we’ll get there.”

Kevin Drake led Huntington with 14 points and was 3 for 5 from three-point range. Point guard Adrian Brooks had 13.

The Bulls go on the road to take on Copiague Friday, Feb 12, then play host to William Floyd Feb 14 and rival Smithtown West Feb 16. Unfortunately, no fans are allowed to attend games at this time.

As per the Section XI website, “Due to safety concerns outlined by the Suffolk County Department of Health and physicians on our safety committee, having no spectators at contests will give us the best chance for schools to complete their upcoming seasons,” said Tom Combs, executive director of Section XI. “The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and support staff are paramount in this endeavor of returning to play.”
