On Jan. 15, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico (R) and Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner (R-Rocky Point) helped to celebrate the 100th birthday of Rocky Point resident, Josie Romano at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sina

Josie was born on January 15, 1925, in Harlem, and was raised in the Bronx. She married Louis Romano in 1946 and together they raised three kids – Celeste, Andrea, and Stephen – and now enjoy 7 grandkids and 10 great grandkids.
Josie spent her younger years delighting audiences across the country with her marionette puppets, did celebrity impersonations, tap danced, and taught line dancing at senior centers up until she was 95 years of age, including at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center.
A longtime volunteer at St. Anthony’s thrift store since 1987, she also cooked meals for seniors at the Sons of Italy and is a beloved part of the community, known for her grace, kindness, and dedication.

Asked what her secret was to such a long life, Josie said, “I love to eat, and once in a while a little drink, when I feel good. That’s about it, and I love to dance.”

New York State Assemblyman Steve Stern (D-Huntington) announced he has been appointed the new chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs by Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie.

“I am so proud to be the next chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee,” said Stern. “It has been my privilege for my entire career to work closely with and for the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much to protect our great nation. I look forward to meeting with our veterans from across New York State to deliver meaningful legislation for our local heroes and their families.”

“As former chair of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I am thrilled to congratulate my former colleague and neighbor, Assemblyman Steve Stern, on his appointment as the new chair. Assemblyman Stern is a dedicated leader who has long championed the needs of our nation’s heroes, and I have no doubt he will continue to fight for the care and support our veterans rightfully deserve,” said Kimberly Jean-Pierre, former Assemblymember for the 11th Assembly District and former chair of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

In the Suffolk County Legislature, where he served for 12 years, Stern was chairman of the Veterans Committee. During his tenure, he introduced and passed the landmark legislation “Housing Our Homeless Heroes,” ensuring that veterans and their families always have a place to call home.

He also authored the “Protect Our Fallen Heroes Act,” which protects military funerals from reprehensible and disrespectful protests while families are grieving the loss of their loved ones and ensures respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

“My work with Assemblyman Stern goes back to his time at the county, where he championed many programs that positively affected the lives of our veterans, including the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Since its inception in 2012, the Dwyer Project’s impact on the community has resulted in reductions in hospitalizations, sustained families, secured gainful employment, prevented homelessness, promoted daily wellness, and absolutely saved lives,” said Marcelle Leis, director of the Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency. “With Stern’s appointment as chair of the Standing Committee on Veterans’ Affairs in the New York State Assembly, his leadership will continue to forge new programs for veterans throughout the state.”

“The veterans of New York State received a gift today with the appointment of Assemblyman Steve Stern as chairman of the Assembly Veterans’ Affairs Committee,” said Thomas Ronayne, former director of the Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency. “Assemblyman Stern brings two decades of selfless commitment and service to the veterans’ community, characterized by understanding, compassion, and a true grasp of the issues and concerns that affect us. An honest and intelligent chairman who will give his all to ensure we are well served by the state government.”

After being elected to the Assembly in 2018, Stern continued to deliver for veterans. He has sponsored and passed legislation to improve access to critical information, ensuring veterans receive the benefits they deserve, as well as legislation creating a task force to study and improve veterans’ employment opportunities. He has also passed legislation to protect veteran homebuyers from fraud through loan counseling and assistance, and to expand opportunities for Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business Enterprises.

“Steve Stern has effectively advocated for veterans and their families since he began serving as our legislator for the 16th District in Suffolk County. I am very glad to see that he has risen to the position of chairman of the Committee on Veterans Affairs in the New York State Assembly. He has years of experience and a deep knowledge of veterans’ issues to make a real difference. New York State veterans of all conflicts can be assured that he will continue to fight for them,” said Bob Santo, past commander of the American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244.

“Assemblyman Stern has been helping me serve our homeless veterans since 2007; he has gone with me to the VA in Northport, and he has helped me serve dinners to our homeless veterans on Thanksgiving and throughout the year at St. Anthony of Padua. He is very dedicated to our veterans,” said Dr. Ray Mascolo, D.D.S., who provides free dental care to veterans on Long Island.

Stern continues to be at the forefront of initiatives to improve services and care for veterans. He introduced legislation to create a study of women veterans’ healthcare issues to improve veterans’ healthcare in New York, and a bill to ensure that a veteran’s disability benefits would not jeopardize their eligibility for public housing.

“As chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I will remain committed to ensuring that our veterans across New York State always receive the recognition, support, and services they deserve,” said Stern.

Brayden Michael Dickneider receives a proclamation for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout from Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta recognized Brayden Michael Dickneider of Troop 214 for attaining the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout at his Court of Honor at the Smithtown Presbyterian Church on January 4. During the ceremony, he presented Brayden with a proclamation to acknowledge this accomplishment.

Brayden completed the requirements to be eligible to receive the rank of Eagle Scout. For his community service project, Brayden installed a new fence at the Smithtown First Presbyterian Church.

“This is a very proud moment for Brayden, his family and friends and the other scouts. This accomplishment will be with him for the rest of his life, and I am sure he will serve as an inspiration to the younger scouts,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

In anticipation of the arctic temperatures that are forecasted to cover Long Island and the northeast next week, Huntington Supervisor Ed Smyth and the Huntington Town Board will be opening a warming center beginning Tuesday, January 21 to Friday, January 24.  Depending on the forecast, the center hours may be extended beyond those dates.  The warming center location is:

  • Emergency Services – Suffolk County Department of Social Services (DSS) Emergency Services Unit at 631-854-9100.  This number is available after 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, and on weekends and holidays.

 

  • Heating Assistance/HEAP – For those who are out of fuel to heat their homes or need an emergency burner repair, the Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as “HEAP,” can be reached 8 am to 4:30 pm by calling 631-853-8820.

 

  • Project Warmth – Heat assistance is also available through Project Warmth. Those in need can dial 211 or call the United Way at 888-774-7633.

 

  • Temporary Housing Assistance – Those in need of housing can contact the DSS Temporary Housing Assistance Unit by contacting 631-854-9547 from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.   Additional information can be obtained by calling Suffolk County’s non-emergency number at 311.

On Jan. 12 Town of Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim joined families, coaches, and young athletes at the St. James Nesconset Youth Football (SJNYF) Banquet to deliver an exciting announcement that will transform the future of youth sports in Smithtown. For the first time in the program’s history, the Bulls will have an official home field at Toner Park (also known as the Armory) in Nesconset. The field improvements will serve approximately 220 football, 200 Cheerleading and over 200 lacrosse families, all local to the township.

“This is a momentous occasion for the young athletes and their families who have waited years for a place to call home… We’re proud to deliver a facility worthy of their hard work and dedication. These fields are a testament to our commitment to investing in our youth and creating opportunities for them to thrive,” said Supervisor Wehrheim.

Wehrheim, Councilman Tom Lohmann and members of the Parks Department unveiled the project announcement during the annual banquet, where approximately 200 SJNYF families gathered to celebrate the Youth Football league’s achievements. The new athletic fields project, approved for the 2025 capital budget, will serve as home to the St. James Nesconset Youth Football & Cheer and over 200 local families with Smithtown Youth Lacrosse.

“We are absolutely thrilled to finally give our football players and cheerleaders a home base. We are incredibly grateful to the Town of Smithtown, Supervisor Wehrheim, and his team for turning this dream into a reality. This project is a testament to the unique partnership between the town, our athletic leagues, and the families who make it all possible. It’s a shining example of the power of teamwork and the belief that anything is achievable with dedication—a value we proudly instill in our young athletes every day,” said Russell Pace, SJN President.

Construction of the new fields will begin in April 2025. The first fully turfed football field is scheduled for completion in time for the Bulls’ practice season in August 2025. A second field will be hydroseeded this year, with plans to complete its transformation into a turfed athletic field in the 2026 capital budget year.

“I’m beyond thrilled that our lacrosse teams will finally have a state-of-the-art facility to call home. This is truly a dream come true for our kids, and I’m deeply grateful to everyone who helped make it happen. These fields will have a profound impact on our young athletes—not only by enhancing their physical fitness and teamwork but also by fostering lifelong friendships. This facility is more than just a playing field; it’s a stepping stone to their potential, where they’ll learn some of life’s most valuable lessons, both on and off the field,” said Tom Bruckbauer, President of Smithtown Youth Lacrosse.

Additional projects on the Horizon for 2025

The 2025 fiscal year is set to bring exciting developments to Smithtown’s park system, further enhancing recreational opportunities for residents of all ages. Among the upcoming projects are new athletic fields at Cy Donnelly Park, which will provide a home for Kings Park Youth Athletic Leagues for Football, Lacrosse and Soccer. The fields are designed to accommodate the growing needs of our community athletic leagues. Additionally, the expansion of pickleball facilities is on the horizon, with plans to add more courts throughout the parks system to meet the sport’s surging popularity. The town is also exploring the potential for hosting pickleball tournaments at Charles P. Toner Park in the upcoming year ahead, which would not only provide local enthusiasts with competitive opportunities but also foster community engagement. These initiatives reflect Smithtown’s commitment to quality of life, health & wellness, and a sense of community through its top-tier recreational spaces.

NOTE: St. James Nesconset Youth Football & Cheer is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing instructional football and cheerleading programming for children ages 5 through 13. The organization focuses on teaching the fundamentals and proper techniques of sports, while fostering physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership skills in a safe and positive environment. The program’s mission is to create lasting friendships, cherished memories, and a love for the game in every participant.

Juan Rodriguez, a US Army veteran who served his country with distinction during the Korean War while assigned to the “Borinqueneers” the 65th Infantry Regiment, was recognized for his distinguished service at a celebration at the VFW Post 5796 in Kings Park on January 11.

During the Korean War, often referred to as the “Forgotten War,” the men of the 65th Infantry Regiment earned 10 Distinguished Service Crosses, 256 Silver Stars, and 596 Bronze Stars. In addition, on June 10, 2014, the Regiment was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Then in 2021 Congress designated April 13 as “National Borinqueneers Day.”The 65th Regiment was the first segregated Hispanic military unit from Puerto Rico and the first unit of the Korean War to receive such distinction.

After the war, Mr. Rodriguez enrolled in the School of Commercial Arts and upon graduating he worked in advertising and then started his own Hot Press business in Manhattan. With the advent of computers, he closed his business and worked out his home for a couple of years and then secured a position as a custodian for the Kings Park School District.

During the program, Legislator Trotta related a story about his father who joined the marines during the Korean War as he did not want to go to college. In boot camp, his superiors gave him a test and he did so well that they sent him to college, and he was stationed in Puerto Rico during the Korean War. “I am extremely proud to be here today and thank you for your service to our country,” added Trotta.

Suffolk County Legislator Rebecca Sanin drops off clothing donations at Career Couture.

Suffolk County Legislator Rebecca Sanin has announced the conclusion of a highly successful clothing drive to give Suffolk County residents the tools to get good-paying jobs.  Legislator Sanin spearheaded a community clothing drive to benefit the Suffolk County Department of Labor’s Career Couture Boutique in Hauppauge. This initiative, aimed at providing free professional attire to residents in need, collected an impressive total of over 2,000 individual clothing items thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the 16th Legislative District community.

“Career Couture provides residents with the tools to make a strong first impression during job interviews, empowering them on their path to success,” said Legislator Sanin. “This drive showcased the strength and compassion of our community, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who donated and supported this effort.”

The success of this community-driven initiative was made possible through partnerships with local organizations. Donation drop-off boxes were hosted by the Elwood, Commack, and South Huntington Public Libraries, whose efforts helped ensure widespread participation.

Joanne Albano, Assistant Director of the Commack Public Library, shared her enthusiasm for the collaboration: “The Commack Public Library was proud to participate as a drop-off point for Legislator Sanin’s extremely successful Career Couture Boutique clothing drive. We are always happy to partner with Legislator Sanin and look forward to many more successful events and partnerships.”

Andrew Salomon, Library Director of the Elwood Public Library, echoed these sentiments: “Thank you to Suffolk County Legislator Rebecca Sanin and her team for organizing this wonderful clothing drive. The Career Couture Boutique, operated by the Suffolk County Department of Labor, provides free professional clothing to Suffolk County residents, helping them make great first impressions at job interviews and gain confidence in their career pursuits. This effort is particularly significant as Long Island’s labor market continues to evolve. According to the New York State Department of Labor, Long Island’s private sector added 16,000 jobs over the past year, with significant growth in education and health services (+12,300 jobs) and leisure and hospitality (+6,600 jobs). By offering professional attire to job seekers, the clothing drive is directly supporting residents as they prepare to enter these growing industries and strengthen their career prospects.

Legislator Sanin extends her heartfelt gratitude to all who participated, donated, and supported the drive. This effort reflects the shared commitment of Suffolk County residents to supporting one another and strengthening the community.

The Suffolk County Bar Association’s Annual Judicial Swearing-In and Robing Ceremony was held on Monday, January 13 at the Van Nostrand Theatre of Suffolk County Community College’s Grant Campus in Brentwood. The ceremony was a formal induction of the eighteen newly elected and re-elected Suffolk County Supreme Court Justices, County Court Judges, Family Court Judges, and District Court Judges, who were welcomed with an incredible show of support from their colleagues, family and friends, and local dignitaries in this large auditorium. More than fifty of Suffolk’s judges – all donning their traditional black robes – were on hand to welcome their new colleagues.

The Honorable Andrew A. Crecca, District Administrative Judge, presided over the ceremony where each of the eighteen judges – a record number in Suffolk’s history – were individually honored by sponsors and officially took the oath of office. District Administrative Judge Crecca was himself one of the celebrated judges after he was re-elected in November to another term as Justice of the Supreme Court.

The Honorable Derrick J. Robinson (Ret.) delivered a powerful invocation and newly elected District Court Judge Hon. John B. Zollo sang a robust rendition of the National Anthem. The Chief Administrative Judge of the NYS Unified Court System, Hon. Joseph A. Zayas, was also in attendance and he addressed his colleagues: “We judges are blessed with an amazing vocation, where we actually are tasked with deciding what justice is and how are we going to dispense with it in every single case. It is one of the highest callings in all professions”, he said.

Patrick McCormick, Esq., President of the Suffolk County Bar Association, congratulated each of the members of the judiciary on their incredible accomplishment on behalf of the Association. Throughout the ceremony Mr. McCormick presented the judges with the long-standing tradition of their new black robes or ceremonial gavels for those who were re-elected.
