The Aluminaire House

Frances Campani and Michael Schwarting of Campani and Schwarting Architects in Port Jefferson were recently awarded a coveted Advocacy Citation of Merit from Docomomo, an international organization involved with preserving modern architecture around the world, for their work to save and rebuild the 1931 Aluminaire House in Palm Springs, California. 

The Aluminaire House was conceived and constructed by Lawrence Kocher and Albert Frey as an exhibition house for the Allied Arts and Industry and Architectural League Exhibition of 1931 at the Grand Central Palace in New York City. The house is constructed of mostly aluminum and glass, and was intended to be mass produced and affordable, using inexpensive, off-the-shelf materials. The three-story house was constructed for the exhibit in just ten days, and during its first week on display attracted more than 100,000 visitors.

The husband and wife architect team have worked on this project since 1987 when they rescued it from demolition in Huntington, deconstructed and reconstructed it with their architecture students at the New York Institute of Technology campus in Central Islip. Campani is presently an Associate Professor and Schwarting a Professor Emeritus of NYIT. The campus closed in 2005 and Campani and Schwarting formed the Aluminaire House Foundation and gifted it to the Palm Springs Museum of Art in 2020. It opened on the grounds of the Museum as part of their collection in March 2024. 

The Aluminaire House was selected as one of 16 best American modern preservation projects at the 2024 Docomomo Modernism in America Awards ceremony in West Hollywood. The jurors noted, “This is an almost 100-year-old house that was not meant to last, but it has.” “People have gone to herculean lengths to preserve it, and there is a value in recognizing the individuals who have spent decades in service to preserving this object. The new location in Palm springs makes prefect sense.” “Sometimes the best preservation tool is patience.”

“We are very proud of the results of 35 years of work to save this significant structure,” said Schwarting and Campini in a press release. “There have many people involved to help but it is worth noting the 120 NYIT architecture students that worked and were educated by it.”

Clare Whitney, PhD, MBE, RN, Assistant Professor in the Stony Brook University School of Nursing, has been selected as a 2025 Macy Faculty Scholar, a national program that identifies and develops early-career nursing and medicine educators to become more effective leaders.

Dr. Whitney is Stony Brook’s first Macy Faculty Scholar, and she is one of five educators nationwide to make up this distinguished class of 2025. Macy Scholars develop a project and have access to professional development programs, formal mentoring, and educational opportunities. The program begins on July 1.

Dr. Whitney’s Macy Faculty Scholars project is centered around the Alda Healthcare Experience for Nursing (AHE-N), an interprofessional communication skills training designed for nurses. She will work to develop, implement, and evaluate the AHE-N, which aims to advance sustainable solutions for burnout prevention while enhancing interprofessional collaboration for student nurses.

Her nursing research at Stony Brook is focused on reducing burnout and improving the well-being of healthcare professionals. She established an interdisciplinary research program that addresses pressing relational and ethical issues for the healthcare workforce.

“This is an exciting honor and a meaningful recognition of my passion for advancing nursing education,” says Dr. Whitney. “As I continue to grow in my career, this will allow me to collaborate with and receive mentorship from other educators and leaders, strengthening my ability to educate the next generation of nurses and hopefully make a lasting difference in the profession.”

“We are proud to have Dr. Whitney selected as a Macy Faculty Scholar,” says School of Nursing Dean Patricia Bruckenthal. “Given her expertise in bioethics and health communication science, she will no doubt make an impact on promoting collaboration among health professionals and preparing future nurse leaders to deliver ethical patient-centered care in our complex healthcare environment.”

At Stony Brook, Dr. Whitney is also an affiliated faculty member in the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics in the Renaissance School of Medicine.

“As an early career faculty member, Dr. Whitney has an impressive body of scholarship related to addressing relational and ethical issues among health professionals,” adds Dr. Holly J. Humphrey, President of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the organization that sponsors the program.

For the seventh year in a row, a survey of Jefferson’s Ferry residents and their families in South Setauket has affirmed the excellence of the care residents of the Life Plan Community’s skilled nursing care receive. Their feedback places Jefferson’s Ferry’s Vincent Bove Health Center among the top 15% in the nation, providing “Best in Class” service to its residents. In recognition of this distinction, Jefferson’s Ferry received the Activated Insights Customer Experience Award (formerly Pinnacle Quality Insight) for outstanding resident satisfaction and overall achievement in skilled nursing care. 

The Activated Insights Award process closely examined skilled nursing care at the Health Center over a 12-month period of study by surveying residents and their families about the quality of 14 target areas: Nursing care, activities, dining services/food quality, cleanliness, laundry services, therapy services, response to problems, dignity and respect, individual needs, would they recommend to others, the overall customer experience, and satisfaction by residents or family members. 

“Since Jefferson’s Ferry opened its doors nearly 25 years ago as Long Island’s first Life Plan Retirement Community, we have upheld the highest standards to deliver extraordinary care,” said Jefferson’s Ferry President and CEO Bob Caulfield. “The Activated Insights Award affirms the outstanding work that our staff performs on a daily basis and is a vote of confidence that all of us take very seriously. The survey sampling of Vincent Bove Health Center residents and their families is conducted by monthly telephone interviews that ask the participants open-ended questions to rate their experiences in each specific category. Jefferson’s Ferry staff receive that feedback each month to gain a better understanding of emerging resident needs and make improvements when necessary. 

“With its basis in direct feedback from our residents and their loved ones, the Activated Insights Award is especially meaningful to our caregivers and other staff,” explained Anthony Comerford, Vice President of Health Service at Jefferson’s Ferry. “The staff and residents form close relationships based on mutual respect, trust, and quality care. It is both important and immensely satisfying to all of us to know that we are consistently hitting the mark, meeting or exceeding the best standards or practices within our industry.”

The facilities are among the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for preventing harm in patients

Northwell Health hospitals have been recognized once again by Healthgrades as 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Awards™ recipients. Huntington Hospital received the award for the seventh consecutive year (2019-2025) and named among the top 5% of short-term acute-care hospitals nationwide for patient safety for the sixth straight year (2020-2025). Long Island Jewish Medical Center, which includes Long Island Jewish Valley Stream and Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, earned the award for the second consecutive year (2024-2025) and was also named among the top 5% of hospitals for patient safety for both years.

The Healthgrades recognition underscores a culture of excellence that permeates these Northwell Health hospitals, evident in their numerous other achievements.

Huntington Hospital is the only hospital on Long Island, and one of only 33 in the country, to achieve Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for nursing excellence four consecutive times. Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park was recognized by Healthgrades in 2025 as fourth in New York State for stroke care and joint replacement. Long Island Jewish Valley Stream is a designated stroke center certified by the American Heart Association. It is also recognized as a Network of Excellence in hernia surgery by Surgical Review Corporation. Long Island Jewish Forest Hills is designated a Level II Perinatal Center and is an American College of Radiology-designated Lung Cancer ScreeningCenter.

Plainview Hospital, an acute care community hospital, was also a recipient of the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Awards™. As a New York State Department of Health Primary Stroke Center, Plainview Hospital is a recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines®-Stroke Quality Achievement Award.

Healthgrades’ analysis* evaluated 4,500 hospitals nationwide from 2021-2023. The results indicated that 173,280 preventable safety events occurred among Medicare patients.

Patients treated in hospitals that received the 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award have a significantly lower chance of experiencing one of the four leading safety indicators:

  • 54% less likely to experience in-hospital falls resulting in fracture than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals;
  • 55% less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals;
  • 69% less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals;
  • 72% less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.

“These impressive statistics underscore the real-world impact of our commitment to patient safety,” said Dr. Silver. “By minimizing preventable harm, we are not only improving patient outcomes but also enhancing their overall experience of care.”

At a luncheon held at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge on March 4, all 18 Suffolk County Legislators honored the county’s Women of Distinction for 2025. The county’s Department of Women’s Services asked each legislator to choose an impressive female constituent from their district who volunteers their time to make their community a better place. Legislator Steven Englebright (D-Setauket) named nonprofit founder Johanna Kosak as the Fifth Legislative District’s Woman of Distinction.

Kosak founded the Comsewogue Music and Arts Corporation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, in September 2023 after her daughter noticed a lack of music and arts scholarships in the Comsewogue School District. The nonprofit organization assists students pursuing creative paths.

“It’s impressive that Ms. Kosak found a need in her children’s school district and took matters in her own hands to do something about it,” Englebright said. “Music and other creative pursuits are vital for the collective good of our society.”

Kosak works alongside school district mothers Secretary Michele Provenzale and Treasurer Yoon Choi-Perrone, as well as the nonprofit’s student volunteers, her daughter, Annmarie; Perrone’s son, James; and Provenzale’s son, Michael.

The volunteers organize and host 20 to 30 fundraisers annually and have raised $12,000 since September 2023. The nonprofit is present at every school concert and drama production to sell flowers and snacks, hold raffles and request donations.

The nonprofit raises funds for scholarships for Comsewogue High School seniors who plan to enroll in college music, arts, marketing, business and architecture programs. CMAC also provides opportunities for art students to promote their artwork at the nonprofit’s craft fair. Last year, the sale of artwork supplied funds for CMAC and the Arts Honor Society.

Additionally, the CMAC supports teachers by providing grants for educators to invite professional musicians and artists for workshops and career development sessions. CMAC also raises funds to reduce costs for families in financial need who wish to send younger children to music or drama programs during the summer vacation.

The nonprofit’s work includes supporting the Comsewogue High School Business Department by providing learning and collaboration opportunities for students interested in digital art marketing.

In addition to her volunteer work with CMAC, the mother of four works fulltime and volunteers with her husband at Infant Jesus Roman Catholic Church. Her husband serves as the organist, while she plays keyboard. A former instructor at Suffolk County Community College, Kosak also volunteered with the Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation, serving in roles such as president, vice-president and competition coordinator.

Kosak said she was honored and humbled to be honored and credited her fellow volunteers and the community for making CMAC a success.

“This recognition was not only for me but for our entire community and a great encouragement to continue,” Kosak said.

 

When Village Eye Care/Optical Outfitters on Barnum Avenue in Port Jefferson closed its doors for good last July after Dr. Alfred Cossari announced his retirement, it opened up an exciting new chapter for his daughter, Danielle Cossari Paulus, who had worked alongside her father as co-founder for three decades.

The businesswoman recently re-opened an Optical Outfitters boutique in the Village at 158 East Main Street, Suite 2, in the former Reruns clothing store. The front entrance is on Arden Place across from the Port Jefferson Free Library.

The new shop still offers affordable quality prescription eyewear for children and adults with an added focus on specialty collections only found in boutique optical shops like those in New York City along with quality sunglass brands such as Maui Jim polarized sunglasses, Ray Ban, and Oliver Peoples.

“Customers are looking for these products for their eyewear more now and are tired of seeing what they can get online or in every other optical shop,” said Paulus.

Known locally for her fashion and design sense, she has also added a gift section in the store offering scarves, hats, handbags, jewelry, candles and kitchenware. Some products are created by local artisans or made by women supported by small companies that want to help women all over the world who suffer from terrible circumstances. 

Local artists are also welcome to have their artisan products displayed there.

“People are missing more and more the one-to-one, mom and pop, independent care as group practice clinical offices have wiped them out so quickly,” said Paulus. “I’m calling it no more Big Business Baloney, which I mentioned in a casual conversation with friends but it really hit a nerve with a large group of people and has continued to ever since whenever brought up.”  

Paulus is committed to remaining an independent with one-to-one appointments with the owner/optician to give uniquely customized service to provide well-crafted individualized eyeglasses for good vision, safety and style. 

Her mission is simple — to continue doing what her patients have appreciated now as a concierge optical outfitter that does not plan on ever having to shift her focus on the numbers or seeing x number of people a day.

“Personalized quality service is becoming extinct and that’s what makes Optical Outfitters and its relationships with its patients so special,” said Paulus.

“When my father asked me 30 years ago to join him to open an optical shop I had no idea it would be the best decision I’ve ever made — to live near family/community where my kids go to the school I went to and learning how to provide care from a father with the highest values with all heart is really something,” she added.  

“Quality craftsmanship, like opticianry, does not have to die in our little corner of the world and helping people while doing it should be the way.”

King Kullen and Wild by Nature recently came to the aid of Long Islanders in need by hosting their annual in-store “Check Out Hunger” campaign, raising $16,000. The money was donated to the Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank, which has served Long Island’s food insecure population since 1980.

Tracey Cullen, King Kullen Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Initiatives and the great-granddaughter of King Kullen founder Michael Cullen, observed that King Kullen and its customers have a long history of supporting Long Island Cares.

“Since 1997, the ‘Check Out Hunger’ campaign has helped Long Island Cares advance its mission to provide food where and when it’s needed,” said Cullen, who serves on the Long Island Cares board of directors. “As always, we thank our customers for contributing to ‘Check Out Hunger’ and our food drives, which also benefit Long Island Cares. The fight against hunger is an important priority at both King Kullen and Wild by Nature.” 

King Kullen was the first supermarket chain to participate in the annual “Check Out Hunger” campaign, a unique partnership between Long Island Cares and the shopping community. One hundred percent of all donations go to Long Island Cares.

“For close to 30 years, King Kullen and Wild by Nature have made a significant difference in the fight against hunger,” observed Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank Chief Executive Officer Paule T. Pachter. “Their customers continue to generously support our mission and we are forever grateful for their support all these years.”

Headquartered in Hauppauge, King Kullen is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as America’s first supermarket. Also headquartered in Hauppauge, Long Island Cares was founded in 1980 by singer-songwriter and activist, Harry Chapin.

At around 10:40 p.m. Feb 25, Scott McKinnon, owner of Main Street Pub in Kings Park, received a call that a fire had emerged. He immediately drove to the bar he took over from his father decades before from his home 20 minutes away. Fire was visible above the building. 

“I was driving up and light was coming out of the roof,” McKinnon said.

According to McKinnon, the fire started outside in an alleyway between the pub and the neighboring Euro Barber Shop. The fire department extinguished it swiftly and with no casualties, but the bar has endured tremendous damage; about 30-40% of the pub that has been in operation for about three decades was severely damaged, Mckinnon estimates. 

“The firefighters did a great job extinguishing the fire but there is a lot of damage from the smoke,” McKinnon said. There is also water damage. 

Evelyn Wood, McKinnon’s partner, said the last week has been “kind of like a rollercoaster.” The fire was devastating; however, at the Kings Park St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the community showed their support. 

“We are learning emotions we didn’t know we had and just trying to get through each one together,” Wood said. “It has been very overwhelming to [Scott]. This is everything. It has put a roof over his kids’ heads and helped them grow up and go to school and everything.”

The pub’s employees organized a booth on a side street next to the pub. They gave out food and raised money to supplement the income that the 80 employees have now lost. They chatted with regulars and tried to preserve the pub’s presence in the community. 

“It was nice to see the people that we always take care of and we always serve are taking care of us now,” Wood said. The pub’s employees, some who have been working at the pub for decades, are spearheading promotional fundraisers while McKinnon works with insurance companies and the town to navigate rebuilding. 

McKinnon described the bar as an “old-time” institution with regulars who spent “most of their time” there, drinking and talking.

“Regardless if you were an employee or customer, everyone knows everyone, cares for everyone. . . watches each other’s backs, it was just a tight knit place to be in,” Wood said. 

McKinnon, eager to get the bar back up and running, has had to wait for the insurance company to file the damages. He cannot touch or alter anything while this process continues, something McKinnon said is “impossible”.

During Covid, when the bar had to shut down, McKinnon supplemented the loss with his savings and income, ensuring the bar would get through the financial strain of extended closure. 

“All the means I had I had to put into the business,” McKinnon said. Now, he has to navigate town ordinances and insurance dealings before he can get the bar back to the state it was. He approximates the bar will be back in three to four months.

McKinnon said he might consider making some changes when the bar eventually reopens.

On Saturday, March 1, Long Islanders lined the sidewalk outside the Tesla Showroom in Smithtown to express their grievances with Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO who simultaneously oversees the Department of Government Efficiency  established by President Donald Trump (R) this year. Protesters stretching a quarter mile down Smithtown Bypass held signs expressing concerns over corruption and the endangerment of democracy. 

The rally was part of the nationwide Tesla Takedown movement, which has spawned a multitude of protests since mid-February. More than 50 happened Saturday, March 1, alone, with the protests encouraging people to “sell your Teslas, dump your stock, [and] join the picket lines” in order to strike back financially against Musk. With Tesla stocks having fallen 28% last month, organizers believe it to be working. Many of these protests were also part of the nationwide Indivisible organization.

The Smithtown rally was organized by the newly created United Voices for Freedom, which describes itself as “a grassroots group that serves to amplify progressive voices in the northern central region of Long Island.” Tiffany, who founded the group and wanted her last name kept private, said, “We’re all worried about the overreach of Musk and his ransacking of our federal agencies. No one elected Musk.” The concern of Musk being “unelected” was repeated by nearly every attendee interviewed, each having a wide range of grievances regarding the billionaire.

“He has a tremendous conflict of interest,” said Deborah Roberts, an attendee who previously organized a rally for congressional town halls. “He just ended the Verizon contract and put Starlink in, he controls communications and platforms online… he’s interfering in our economy and ruining our guardrails for safety in this country, but he’s not chipping away at his welfare program for Starlink and for SpaceX. And not only that, he’s dismantling bureaucracies that have oversight for both of those programs. He doesn’t want anyone looking.” 

Roberts spoke too on concerns of Musk operating within the executive branch while neither having been vetted by Congress nor having divested himself of personal financial interest. His accessing of Americans’ private information was something many there found especially dangerous. “If you wanted a template for corruption,” said attendee Paula Fries, “this is it.”

Others elaborated on issues of what DOGE is cutting, expressing fear for Medicaid and Social Security, as well as concern that DOGE, having not gained congressional approval, has no legal standing to make those cuts. Attendee Ian Wilder described DOGE as “doing things that are frightening and destructive, like taking people out of the FAA, taking people who are in charge of nuclear weapons out.” There is some concern that because federal workers in the Social Security Admisitration have been fired, Social Security checks and Medicaid payments will not be made on time to help recipients.  

Laura Lesch, another attendee, said this was not the way to run a government. “It might be the way to run a tech company,” she said, “but the way he’s going about this, just slash, slash, slash, without any regard for any of the fallout, is just not acceptable to me.”

More expressed concerns over Musk and Trump’s actions being those of oligarchs, and spoke to fear of authoritarianism. Future elections, multiple people expressed, would not be a certainty with this administration, unless they were fought for. “This could be our last hope for democracy,” one person said. “Unless people mobilize in large, large numbers, we’re screwed.”

In this sense, the protest, for many, had nothing to do with partisan preference. Robert Schaller, who described himself as having formerly been a Republican his whole life, said, “The whole thing is just ridiculous. I can’t even believe if a liberal ever turned around or the Democratic Party went out there and did a Hitler salute like he did, and then they try to backtrack it. … I mean, to alienate our allies the way they’re doing, is embarrassing. If my father and grandfather and the people that fought in World War II saw this today, they would be turning over in their graves.” 

This sentiment was echoed by Fries, who made a similar statement. “My father is a World War II vet,” she said. “He fought in World War II, he fought against fascism, and this is the least I can do, is to show up and protest.”

Among the American flags waved by the protesters were Ukrainian flags too, the striking yellow and blue a reminder of the incident at the White House the day before. “I was appalled by yesterday’s news conference with Zelenskyy,” said attendee Lesch. “Our entire international relationships are going to go right down the tubes. It just doesn’t make sense to abandon all of Europe, which is what we’re doing, in effect.” She elaborated how at the conference, news groups such as the Associated Press were not allowed into the Oval Office, but “the Russian press was… and when asked how they got in, the answer was they just snuck in.”

A final issue among attendees was a desire to express all these concerns at an in-person congressional town hall, which has not occurred in Suffolk County since 2017. Roberts was collecting signatures at the event to petition for one. “My congressperson is Nick LaLota of CD1,” she said, “and he never has a public town hall meeting where he answers these important questions.” The petition has gained popularity with an online version as well, which thus far has garnered over 1,000 signatures.

The rally, overall, lasted two hours with over 500 people in attendance, according to the organizer, and a follow-up is planned for later this month. At the Tesla Showroom, no one was available for comment. 

Nationally, there are Tesla Takedown protests scheduled through at least the end of the month, with protests scheduled outside the United States in Iceland, Portugal and the United Kingdom as well. Responding to the nationwide presence of the protests, the United Voices for Freedom organizer Tiffany said, “I think it shows that everyone is really unhappy with this, I think that people are really concerned about the state of our democracy and that we’re quickly falling into fascism, and people feel the need to get out and stop it, or at least try to stop it.”
