Ward Melville shined in the Tony Toro track meet at Suffolk County Community College Sunday morning, Jan. 16, where the 4 x 800 relay team put in a solid performance clocking in at nine minutes and 12.45 seconds for third place.

John Heraghty ran the grueling 3200-meter event with a time of 11:17.13 which placed him fifth overall. Sophomore Adam Marotto placed eighth in shot put with a 31-0.72 throw, while teammate James McGarrity threw 32-7 good enough for fifth. Jack Geraghty placed second with a throw of 34.6.75.

Julian Smith, a senior, won at 1600-meter distance with a time of 4:48.56, and senior Harrison Reduto placed first in the 55-meter hurdle event tripping the clock at 8.87 well ahead of the second-place finisher.

It was Shoreham-Wading River’s defense and GraceAnn Leonard’s 25 points that led the Wildcats to a 59-42 win at home against John Glenn in a league VI matchup Jan. 14. 

Glenn trailed by six at the half but the Wildcats found their rhythm in the 3rd and stretched their legs in the final 8 minutes of play to put the game away. 

Leonard scored 12 field goals and a free throw, teammates Sophie Costello scored 7 from the floor a triple and two from the line for 19 points and Sophia Lavey banked 6. 

Carlie Cutinella netted 5 and Colleen Ohrtman and Katie Coster had two points apiece. 

The win lifts the Wildcats 5-1 in league for sole possession of 2nd place one game behind Mount Sinai.

Trailing by three at the halftime break, Newfield had a productive third quarter to retake the lead over Commack in a League II matchup at home. The Wolverines kept the Cougars at bay in the final eight minutes to secure a 57-50 victory Jan 13.  

Senior Hamza Yousef led the way for Newfield hitting two triples, five field goals and two from the free throw line for 18 points. Isaiah Brown followed with four from the floor, three at the line for 11 points along with 16 rebounds, and Josh Jacobs the senior along with junior Kyle Milano netted 10 points apiece. Michael Agostino added eight.

The win lifts the Wolverines to 5-2 in league, 7-5 overall, to move third place behind Northport and Ward Melville. The Wolverines retake the court Jan 15 in a non-league matchup at home against Walt Whitman. Game time is at noon.

Once again Ward Melville senior Tommy Engel led his team in scoring in a League II matchup against Bay Shore, scoring 16 points for a 59-49 victory at home Jan. 11.

Teammates Tommy Ribaudo and KJ Anderson each scored 12 points apiece and Lorenzo Beaton banked seven. Seniors Frank Carroll, Michael Dargan and Josh Horvath netted four points each. The win lifts the Patriots to 5-1 in the league, 10-2 overall. Ward Melville is one game behind Northport who sits atop the leaderboard.

The Patriots are back in action Jan. 14 with a road game against Walt Whitman. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Harborfields High School girls track team competed in an indoor crossover meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Harborfields Delilah Shapiro placed eighth in the 55-meter hurdle event with a 10.41, and teammates Marina Bak and Sophia Rose ran the 1500-meter race and placed 14th and 17th, respectively. Brianna Coakley finished fifth at 1000-meters with a time of 3:39.81.

The Lady Wildcats of Shoreham-Wading River competed in a section XI crossover indoor track meet at Suffolk County Community College Jan. 9. 

Madison Zelin placed 2nd over all in the 55-meter dash clocking in at 9.80. Teammates Olivia Pesso and Maddie-Lynn McKiernan placed 3rd & 4th respectively at the 1500-meter distance, and Madison Zelin placed first in the  300-meter dash with a 45.35.

It was all Port Jefferson in a league VII home game against Shelter Island where the Royals made short work of the Islanders with a 71-11 victory Jan. 11. 

Senior Peter Murphy led the way for the Royals with 7 rebounds and 6 field goals for 12 points, Steven Bayer hit a triple and 4 field goals for 11 and Conor Daily banked 10. 

The win lifts the Royals to 6-2 in league 6-3 overall. Port Jeff retakes the court Jan. 13 with another home game against Greenport. Tip-off is at 6:15 p.m.

The Smithtown High School East girls winter track team competed in an indoor crossover meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Sarah Wisnieski clocked a 5:32.34 in the 1500 meter event, and Kate Ball placed 10th. Grace McDonald placed sixth in shot put with a throw of 28 feet and 3 1/2.”

The T-Birds of Connetquot stayed within striking distance by the halftime break, but the Newfield Wolverines stretched their legs in the 3rd quarter behind the hot hand of sophomore Raiyah Reid — who led her team in scoring for the 55-39 victory Jan, 6.

Reid hit 11 field goals a triple and 3 from the free throw line for 28 points. Megan Spina the senior netted 6 field goals a free throw for 13 points along with 12 rebounds and Abigal Daniels banked six.

The win lifts the Wolverines to 2-3 in league play 3-6 overall. Newfield retakes the court Jan. 10 at home against Lindenhurst. Tip-off is schedule for 5 o’clock.

With 997 career varsity points and counting, Mount Sinai’s Drew Feinstein drained a triple from the corner for the juniors 1.000th career varsity-point in a home game against Hauppauge Dec. 18. 

Feinstein a varsity player since the 8th grade seemed unfazed by the accomplishment saying he did nothing different to prepare for the history making game. 

“Pretty much do what I do just play just gotta play hard,” said Feinstein, who led his team in scor-ing with 22 points. “I always show up in the second half.” 

Despite a 4th quarter surge, the Mustangs fell short 76-69 in the non-league matchup.
