After an extensive investigation, detectives from the Suffolk County SPCA arrested a Port Jefferson Station man on Sept. 13 for animal cruelty.On July 1 the Suffolk County SPCA received a complaint from a veterinarian in Brookhaven Town regarding a case of extreme neglect.

The complaint reported a fifteen-year-old female Pit Bull Terrier “Coca” was brought in extremely emaciated, unable to rise or walk. There were significant ulcerated wounds all over body, notably in her stomach and groin area. There was foul odor from her open ulcerations that covered her stomach and groin area. The paws were red with irritation, overgrown nails that’s curled into the paws creating painful, open oozing wounds. Fur was missing from a significant portion of Coca. Coca was humanely euthanized by the hospital due to the extreme pain as a result of her condition. The reporting veterinarian stated it was one of the worst neglect cases she had ever examined.

On July 6 at approximately 10 a.m. SPCA Detectives responded to the owner’s residence in Port Jefferson Station with the assistance of the Suffolk County Police Department’s 7th Precinct uniform patrol. Coca was exhumed by Detectives and forensic necropsy preformed by Cornell University Animal Health Diagnostic Center Pathologists in Ithaca, NY.

On September 13, 2024 SPCA Detectives arrested Juan Vargas, 66, of Port Jefferson Station. He was charged with misdemeanor Animal Cruelty. Vargas is scheduled to appear in Suffolk County First District Court in Central Islip on October 3.

On Sept. 11,  at approximately 10:30 p.m., the Suffolk County SPCA received a complaint from a concerned citizen regarding a female beating a duck.

Detectives from the Suffolk County SPCA responded to Hauppauge and were provided videos of the incident that occurred on or about Aug. 26 at approximately 10 a.m. in a small pond located behind The Greens. A woman can be seen cruelly and unjustifiably beating a grey and black/brown Mallard type duck with a hard stick like object in the body, head, and neck area. The woman pursues the duck on land and into the water. It was observed to be deceased shortly after the encounter.

On Sept. 13 at approximately 10:30 p.m. in Hauppauge, SPCA Detectives arrested Audrey Zabielski, 73, and charged her with misdemeanor animal cruelty. Zabielski is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 3 at 9 a.m.

Suffolk County SPCA with the assistance of Suffolk County Police arrested a man on Jan. 11 for fatally injuring a dog and threatening the dog’s owner in Holbrook last month. An animal hospital reported a suspicious death of a dog to the Suffolk County SPCA on Dec. 20.
Following an investigation by SCSPCA detectives that included a forensic necropsy, Scott A. Walker was arrested at Valero, located at 1080 Main St., Holbrook at 8:54 p.m. It was determined that Walker had allegedly kicked the dog, an 11-year-old mixed breed male dog named Jager, at his residence, located on Dolphin Lane, causing the injuries that resulted in the dog’s death, and for threatening the dog’s owner, another resident of the house.

Walker, 44, was charged with Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, Animal Cruelty, Criminal Mischief, Aggravated Harassment 2nd Degree, and Coercion 3rd Degree.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals hosts a free dog food distribution event at the Suffolk County SPCA, Wm. J. Lindsay Complex, 725 Veterans Memorial Hwy., Hauppage on Saturday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until the supply runs out. Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk SPCA said that the agency is happy to help our furry friends. The holistic dog food was donated by Health Extensions of Hauppauge.
