The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team (11-3, 6-0 CAA) remains the only team left undefeated in the CAA as it topped the Towson Tigers, 14-11, on April 22 to secure the No.1 seed heading into the program’s first-ever CAA Tournament.

The Seawolves’ offense was led by senior attacker Morgan Mitchell who tallied five goals. Senior attacker Kailyn Hart and junior midfielder Ellie Masera followed behind Mitchell registering a hat trick each. Graduate attacker Jolie Creo dished out a career-high eight assists, tied for second-most assists in a single game in program history with Taryn Ohlmiller, Kylie Ohlmiller, and Claire Petersen.

Towson got off to a hot start, scoring two back-to-back early goals courtesy of Halley Koras and Lindsey Marshall. However, Stony Brook did not stay silent for long as Masera converted a woman-up goal off a helper from Creo to get the squad on the board. The Tigers would add another goal to increase their lead to 3-1 with 10:08 remaining in the first quarter.

Less than one minute later, Masera and Mitchell would score back-to-back goals of their own to tie the contest, 3-3. The Seawolves found their offensive momentum as the squad would find the back of the cage five more times to grab hold of a 8-3 lead heading into the quarter break.

Throughout the first five minutes of the second quarter, Towson found the cage two times to cut its deficit to just three. Senior midfielder Kira Accettella would add the last goal for Stony Brook before heading into halftime with a 9-6 lead.

The Tigers added another two goals coming out of the half to find themselves within one. Junior midfielder Jaden Hampel and Hart added two goals in the remaining 7:10 left in the third quarter to give the squad a 11-9 lead heading into the final 15 minutes. The squad would go on to outscore Towson, 3-2, to secure their sixth consecutive conference win, the No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament, and the 14-11 victory.

“Proud of our kids to secure the CAA, at least a share of the regular season championship and the one seed in the tournament. Towson is a great team that always brings it when we play each other. I thought we weathered the storms well and responded at opportune times. We took nearly 40 shots and most of those were high quality, so tip of the cap to their goalie who played excellent,” said head coach Joe Spallina.

The team returns home to LaValle Stadium for the regular season finale and the Battle of Long Island on Friday, April 28. Face-off is set for 6:31 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on LacrosseTV.

The No. 6 women’s lacrosse team (10-3, 5-0 CAA) controlled both ends of the field en route to a 20-6 victory over William & Mary (7-7, 3-2 CAA) on Senior Day at LaValle Stadium on April 15.

The Seawolves’ offense saw eight different goal scorers and five different hat tricks. Junior midfielder Ellie Masera led the way with four goals while seniors Kailyn Hart, Morgan Mitchell and Charlotte Verhulst and junior Jaden Hampel all recorded three goals. Graduate Kelsi LoNigro added a pair of goals.

Stony Brook struck first with a goal by Mitchell off an assist from senior Erin MacQuarrie. The Tribe did not stay silent for long as they answered back with a goal of their own with 11:55 left to play in the first quarter. William & Mary found the back of the cage for a second time within the next three minutes to take a 2-1 lead.

With 8:47 remaining in the first quarter, Hart scored her first goal of the contest to tie the contest at 2-2. Hampel and Verhulst added a goal each to give the squad a 4-2 lead heading into the quarter break. The Seawolves got off to a hot start in the second quarter, with MacQuarrie and Mitchell scoring back-to-back goals.

The second quarter was all Stony Brook as it added eight more goals throughout the remaining 13 minutes to head into halftime with a 14-3 lead. The Seawolves went on to outscore the Tribe 6-3 in the second half of the contest to run away with the 20-6 victory.

Prior to the game, the Seawolves honored their senior class, which is comprised of Kira Accettella, Ella Whitehouse, Kailyn Hart, Morgan Mitchell, LoNigro, MacQuarrie, McKenzie Mitchell, Haley Dillon, Lindsay Rongo, Lexie Correia, Shana Hecht, Hailey Duchnowski, and Verhulst.

“Senior Day is always an emotional day. I thought our players did a really good job of funneling their emotions of Senior Day festivities into another dominating conference win. For us, rebounding off a really poor performance at Rutgers Wednesday night, it was good for us to be able to play a few days later and get back on the horse a little bit. I love the senior class, it is a special group to me, they’ve been here a while. I think a bunch of them are going to wind up coming back, but they have made a tremendous impact on our program,” said head coach Joe Spallina.

“We have never moved the ball quite like we did today, and there were a lot of assisted goals today. It was great to get an assisted game into our books and be less of a dodging team. I think today really helped us,” said senior midfielder Charlotte Verhulst.

 “I think today we were just, as a whole today, all in sync. We had assisted goals, dodging goals, free position goals and I think just as a whole we were in sync with each other,” said senior attacker Morgan Mitchell.

The team is back in action on April 22, when they travel to Towson, Md. to take on Towson. Face-off is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on FloLive.

The No. 6 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team (9-2, 4-0 CAA) dominated all aspects of the game to secure a 20-5 victory over the Monmouth Hawks (8-6, 2-2 CAA) on April 7 at Kessler Stadium in West Long Branch, N.J.

The Seawolves’ offense saw nine different goal scores and three different hat tricks en route to the 20 goals scored. Junior midfielder Jaden Hampel led the way with a career-high tying five goals while junior midfielder Ellie Masera follow behind with four. Senior attacker Kailyn Hart add three goals while Morgan Mitchell and Courtney Maclay tallied a pair each.

Stony Brook wasted no time as its hot scoring began 15 seconds after the first draw courtesy of Hart. Less than one minute later, Hampel found the back of the cage to give the squad an early 2-0 lead. The Seawolves’ defense held Monmouth without a shot attempt for the first 8:30 and without a goal for the first 11 minutes of the contest.

After the Hawks got on the board, Stony Brook answered back with back-to-back goals of their own from Mitchell and Masera to enter the quarter break with a 7-1 lead. The squad came out of the break right where they left off, finishing within the first 20 seconds.

With 11:41 left to play in the second quarter, Monmouth managed to find the back of the cage for the second time thanks to Caroline Brennan. 10 seconds after the Hawks’ goal, senior midfielder Charlotte Verhulst scored one of her own off an assist from Masera to take a 9-2 lead.

The Seawolves added three more goals in the second quarter and enter halftime holding a 12-2 lead over Monmouth. The squad went on to outscore the Hawks 8-3 in the second half to ultimately run away with the 20-5 win and their fourth consecutive win and conference win.

“I’m proud of our team. We took a business like approach and took care of business early on. We checked the boxes of things we needed to accomplish, starting with the draw controls. We played unselfish offense and disciplined defense, all good signs as we head into another important week,” said head coach Joe Spallina.

The team returns home to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium to take on William & Mary on Saturday, April 15 for Senior Day. Face-off is set for 11 a.m. and the game will be broadcast live on LacrosseTV.

The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team (6-2, 2-0 CAA) featured nine different goal scorers en route to the dominant 17-5 victory over Elon (4-7, 0-2 CAA) on March 25.

Junior midfielder Ellie Masera paced the Seawolves’ offense with six goals. Senior attackers Kailyn Hart and Morgan Mitchell followed behind Masera recoding a hattrick and a pair of goals, respectively.

Stony Brook wasted no time attacking the cage as graduate attacker Jolie Creo struck first for the squad within the first minute of the contest. One minute later, Masera found the back of the net twice for back-to-back goals off assists from Hart and Mitchell which gave the Seawolves an early 3-0 lead.

The first quarter belonged to the team from Long Island as the squad saw four more goals from senior midfielder Charlotte Verhulst (1), Hart (2) and Mitchell (1) to increase their lead to 7-0 heading into the quarter break.

Just like the first, the second quarter was dominated by the hot-scoring Seawolves offense.  Masera recorded her third goal on the day for her seventh hattrick of the season off an assist from Creo with 13:43 left to play in the second quarter. Stony Brook held a 12-0 lead, its largest lead of the day, until Elon’s Anna Hackett found the back of the net for the Phoenix’s first goal of the game.

The Seawolves went on to add four more goals in the second half to ultimately runway with the 17-5 win and secure their second conference win.

“The team stepped up and played inspired. It’s always good to get up early and we were very happy with the way our entire roster played. It started with the draw, that was the difference today,” said head coach Joe Spallina. 

The team returns home to Kenneth P. LaValle stadium to host the Drexel Dragons on April 2 at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on FloLive.

The No. 5/6 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team (4-0) used a second half surge to come out on top and earn its third ranked win of the season against No.17 Stanford University (2-3) on March 3 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.

The Seawolves were paced by CAA Preseason Midfielder of the Year, Ellie Masera, who tallied a season-high five goals. Graduate attacker Jolie Creo, senior attackers Kailyn Har and Morgan Mitchell and senior midfielder Erin MacQuarrie all added a pair of goals each in the contest.

Stony Brook got off to a slow start as the squad was not able to find the back of the cage in the first quarter and trailed the Cardinal 4-0 heading into the quarter break. Stanford would go on to tally two more goals within the first two minutes of the second quarter from Ashley Humphrey and Annabel Frist.

With 9:35 remaining in the second quarter, Masera got the Seawolves on the board off an assist from junior midfielder Jaden Hampel. Stony Brook added three more goals in the quarter to cut the deficit to 7-4 heading into halftime.

The Seawolves came back on to the field with vengeance, scoring within the first 30 seconds of the third quarter courtesy of Morgan Mitchell who finished a free position shot. The squad tallied five more goals in the quarter, including a go-ahead man-down goal by Masera with four seconds remaining to give Stony Brook its first lead of the game, 10-9.

Masera, Hampel, Creo and Hart all registered goals in the fourth quarter secure the lead for the Seawolves and ultimately the 14-10 comeback victory.

For the first time since the 2015 season, the Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team opened its season at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Feb. 17 and rolled past the Michigan Wolverines, 17-10.

Michigan got off to an early lead, scoring the first goal of the game within the first two minutes of the contest. However, that would not last long as Stony Brook’s offense picked up right where they left off last season.

Junior midfielder Jaden Hampel fueled the Seawolves offense, tallying a career-high five goals to lead all players in the contest. Hampel’s first two goals came back-to-back early in the first quarter. The junior finished the first one off an assist from senior midfielder Charlotte Verhulst to tie the Wolverines, 1-1. Within less than two minutes, Hampel found the back of the cage again to give Stony Brook a 2-1 lead.

The Seawolves would not look back as the squad would go on to score nine of the 11 goals to end the first half. Junior midfielder Ellie Masera recorded her first hattrick of the season, scoring three of her four goals in the second quarter alone.

Midway through the third quarter, Stony Brook captured back-to-back goals in one minute by Hampel, a man-up goal byssenior attacker Morgan Mitchell and a goal by Masera, all one after another, gave the Seawolves a 15-4 lead, its largest lead of the match.

With 11:27 remaining in the game, Michigan’s Josie Gooch found the goal which would spark four more Wolverine goals in the fourth. However, goals from Mo. Mitchell and sophomore midfielder Alexandra Fusco would secure the lead for the Seawolves and ultimately the 17-10 victory.

“I am definitely proud of our athletes, I thought we came out against a top-20 team and had a great effort,” said head coach Joe Spallina. “I thought the first half was super-efficient. I think coming into your first game you always worry about doing too many first game things, especially with the other team having already played a couple of games, but our athletes stepped up and played really well. I thought we were efficient; goals were spread around, and I think that is a little different then where we have been in the past where we just have so many different weapons. Defensively, early on especially, we were locked down and we were in running time for most of the second half against a top-20 team, so we have a lot to build on for us.”

The team returns to Kenneth P. LaValle stadium on Feb. 25 to take on Yale. First draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on FloSports.

Ally Kennedy

The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team has national-title aspirations in 2021.

Standout midfielder Ally Kennedy has the loftiest of expectations being placed on her as well. US Lacrosse Magazine on Dec. 28 named Kennedy its Preseason Player of the Year. It marked the first time in program history that a Stony Brook student-athlete received that honor.

Kennedy last week was named Preseason Midfielder of the Year as well as a Preseason All-American by the publication.

“I’m really excited for Ally,” coach Joe Spallina said. “I have watched her grow and put her heart and soul into being the best she could be, and it is incredible to see her be acknowledged. She plays with an unmatched intensity and passion. And while she scores a lot of goals, she does it all for us — draw controls, assists, ground balls and, most importantly to me, as one of the best captains this program has ever had.”

Kennedy ranks second in program history in draw controls (242), fourth in goals (193), fifth in points (248), fifth in ground balls (133) and 10th in assists (55) as she enters her second senior season.

She tallied 15 draw controls against Princeton last March 8, one shy of matching the program record set by former teammate Keri McCarthy in 2018. Kennedy registered seven points in that game, as well as in a season-opening win against Syracuse last season. 

She notched 22 goals, five assists, 47 draw controls, eight ground balls and three caused turnovers during the abbreviated five-game season.

A North Babylon native, Kennedy was an IWLCA first-team All-American as a junior in 2019. Inside Lacrosse recently had ranked Kennedy as the No. 3 player in college lacrosse today — man or woman.

“It’s an honor to receive this recognition, and is more motivation for this upcoming season,” Kennedy said. 

“I couldn’t be more excited to finally get back out on the field with the team and show everyone what we are capable of,” she added.
