The $250,000 Prize Will Focus on 2025 LGBTQ+ Exhibitions and Programs

The Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington has been awarded a significant grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through The Museums for America program. The $250,000 grant for The Heckscher Museum, the largest amount available, is one of 115 projects nationwide which garnered IMLS support, and was selected from hundreds of submissions nationally. 

“IMLS remains committed to serving the museum field and furthering the goals of the American public,” said IMLS Acting Director Cyndee Landrum. “The Museums for America program encourages applicants to be creative in their response to challenges, and to envision a bold future for their institution.”

“We are honored to accept this grant from IMLS,” said Museum Executive Director and CEO Heather Arnet.  “It further solidifies our commitment to serving our community and showcasing diverse artists and stories. As we look to 2025, we are excited to engage youth and intergenerational community members in a robust year of exhibitions and programming highlighting and celebrating LGBTQ+ history and artists.”

The focus for the year was inspired by the tenth anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), the historic Supreme Court case recognizing same-sex couples’ right to marry, as well as by the Museum’s ongoing partnerships with active community and cultural organizations and artists.

“We are excited about the Museum’s 2025 Exhibition year, and its capacity to shine a light on LGBTQ+ artists,” shared Robert Vitelli, CEO, LGBT Network. “This exhibition year also provides an opportunity to highlight the important role that New York and Long Island have played in LGBT history and the contributions our community has made to the arts and to advancing civil rights for all people.” 

Thanks to the IMLS grant, The Heckscher Museum of Art will center community members in a collaborative effort to develop exhibitions and public programming highlighting major works by LGBTQ+ artists, including Berenice Abbott, Marsden Hartley, Betty Parsons, the PaJaMa collective (Paul Cadmus, Jared French, and Margaret French), Alice Rahon, Robert Rauschenberg and many more. The year will also mark the first-ever solo exhibition of American neoclassical sculptor Emma Stebbins (1815–1882). The grant allows the Museum to elevate and interpret experiences of LGBTQ+ figures in American Art, past and present, to deepen and expand relationships in the community, and to engage community members in exhibition and programming development.

Smithtown Township Arts Council has announce that the works of Nesconset artist Jim Minet will be on view from August 28 to October 25 at Apple Bank of Smithtown, 91 Route 111, Smithtown. The exhibition, part of the Arts Council’s Outreach Gallery Program, may be viewed during regular banking hours Monday – Thursday 9 am – 4 pm; Friday 9 am – 6 pm; Saturday 9 am – 1 pm.

After studying at The Art Students League in Manhattan, Minet began his teaching experience at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan and is now focusing exclusively on teaching venues on Long Island.  Originally educated at Long Island University / CW Post and graduating with a Bachelor of Science, he went on to become National Sales Manager for several corporations before starting his own business in Marketing for the art materials industry. Minet ran his marketing business for over 10 years but the passion to paint full time remained, so in 2021 he transitioned full time to painting and teaching art.

Minet paints in oils and acrylics and watercolor. His works showing at Apple Bank is a representational array of oil and acrylic paintings focused on a  variety of landscape subjects. His body of work also includes semi-abstract work and a variety of subjects from still life to landscape to portraiture.

Minet teaches fine art painting for the Smithtown Township Arts Council at the Mills Pond Gallery in St, James and the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn. He is also a Brand Ambassador for Holbein, Legion Paper, and General Pencil Company and frequently conducts workshops throughout the Long Island area. He has exhibited artwork at multiple locations in the New York/Long Island area.

Campo Cuttica, 12 Whitebrook Drive, Flanders will present an art exhibit by artist Doug Reina from August 24 to Oct. 6. Titled “Doug Reina: As I See It,” the exhibit will feature Reina’s most recent figurative paintings which combine his unique personal choice of subject matter with powerful light, shadows, colors and shapes. It is Reina’s intention to connect with the viewer by creating paintings that portray quiet, self-reflective emotional moments, which we all share during the course of one’s lifetime.

Reina is a two-time Pollock-Krasner grant recipient whose studio is in Setauket. He is a full-time artist who creates paintings both on location, as well as in his studio of the unique landscapes and people and structures that are part of his life.

Campo Cuttica is home to several public and private art studios with a large exhibition gallery and sculpture yard. The gallery features a diverse collection of contemporary and modern art from established and emerging artists. 

The community is invited to an opening reception on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. and an ArtTalk on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. The opening reception and ArtTalk are free and open to the public. The Art League of Long Island will hold an open house on Aug. 24.

The Art League of Long Island proudly announces an exhibition featuring the exceptional talent of its distinguished instructors, who are not only passionate educators but also celebrated artists on local, national, and international stages. From August 24 to September 20, the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery will host an impressive display of their work, highlighting the diverse artistic expertise within the Art League’s community.

To kick off the exhibition, the Art League of Long Island invites the public to an open house and artists’ reception on August 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. This event is free and open to everyone, providing a unique opportunity to engage with the artists and experience the dynamic environment of the Art League of Long Island.

During the open house, visitors will be treated to live demonstrations in our specialized studios. Instructors will showcase their skills in a variety of mediums, which may include watercolor painting, oil painting, pottery, jewelry making, photography, and more. These demonstrations offer a glimpse into the creative processes and techniques that make the Art League a vibrant center for artistic growth and education.

Preservation Long Island presents Promoting Long Island: The Art of Edward Lange, 1870–1889, a new exhibition focusing on the life, work, and career of one of Long Island’s most prolific artists of the late nineteenth century. On view August 16 – December 1 2024 at the Preservation Long Island Gallery, 161 Main Street, Cold Spring Harbor, this exhibition of watercolors, photographs, and historical objects from the collection of Preservation Long Island and on loan from collections across Long Island, is inspired by the upcoming release of Preservation Long Island’s latest publication of the same name, arriving September 2024.

Edward Lange grew up in a German family of prominent artists and publishers and arrived on Long Island during one of its most critical moments. For nearly two decades, he watched new industry creep into an older agricultural landscape and used his artwork to record the region’s transformation. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Lange inserted himself into Long Island’s booming economy and created detailed images of main streets, factories, railroad depots, and hotels that resonated with local residents and tourists alike.

“Lange’s artwork represents a tangible connection to a period of Long Island’s history when its people, culture, and landscape were undergoing rapid change,” said Elizabeth Abrams, Preservation Long Island Interim Executive Director.  “The artist’s views of Long Island towns, villages, landscapes, and waterscapes have endeared themselves to Long Islanders and visitors for over 135 years.”

“Artists like Lange played a significant role in a promoting Long Island’s scenery to the larger public during the nineteenth century,” noted Preservation Long Island Chief Curator & Director of Collections, Lauren Brincat. “Not only was Lange’s artwork reflective of a resulting new age of booming tourism on Long Island, but it was instrumental in the region’s growth by advertising hotels, resorts, and experiences to a greater public.”

Peter Fedoryk, exhibition guest curator added, “In the late nineteenth century, Lange’s artwork had immense visual influence in the New York metropolitan area. Today, the artist’s paintings, drawings, prints, and photographic reproductions are celebrated as snapshots of a world before suburbanization permanently reshaped Long Island’s built environment.”

Up next for Gallery North , 90 North Country Road, Setauket is a solo exhibit titled Scott McIntire: Energyscapes. The show opens on Aug. 15 and runs through Sept. 29.  

The exhibition features large, medium, and small paintings and sculptures. 

McIntire constructs dynamic compositions in enamel which form a repository of information. Each vessel of data includes the sounds, smells, forces, electromagnetic and thermal energies that make up the environment. Each space seamlessly merges natural and man-made artifacts. 

McIntire uses his mastery of the optical properties of color to create the illusion of movement and vibration. Dazzling patterns and vivid concentric circles combine to form a dramatic Op Art world in which references to flora and fauna ground the work in a reality just out of sight from the human eye.

Born and raised in the fertile Willamette Valley in Oregon, McIntire’s artistic perception is rooted in his love of nature. At the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, McIntire studied color under the master colorist Albert King, giving him a lifelong understanding and love of color. McIntire is currently based in Greenport. His work has been exhibited both nationally and regionally including the Nassau County Museum of Art.

The community is invited to an opening reception on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. As a complement to the exhibition, Gallery North will host an ArTalk on Sunday, August 25, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition, reception, and ArTalk will be free and open to the public.

Behold the beauty as seen through another’s eyes with the Port Jefferson Photography Club’s (PJPC) exhibit, Through the Camera Lens, at Emma Clark Library, 120 Main Street in Setauket. 

On view through the month of August, the exhibit features approximately 30 photos by club members Ralph Baldasarra, Barry Bernstein, Wendy Beaton, Michael Boren, William Hammer, Terry Murphy, Kathy Pisculli, Darlene Prowse, Anneliese Scheef, Irene Stern, C. Visconti, and Peter Willstein.

Housed on the walls of the library’s new Level Up Kitchen Library Café on the first floor next to the reference desk, all images in Through the Camera Lens have a card that lists the title of the photo, the photographer’s name, and contact information. Many of these photos are for sale; visitors are encouraged to contact the photographer if interested in purchasing a photo. 

The images illuminate a spectrum of perspectives and personalities, taking the viewer on a tour of instances and ideas.

“We have such a diverse, well-traveled membership that we ask members to display what they would like to share with the audience. Travel, black & white, landscape, architecture, animals, portraits, etc,” said Prowse. 

A variety of outlook and style enables attendees to see the world from individual points of view: common sights may reveal uncommon insights and fleeting moments are made forever spellbinding. 

“It gives us an opportunity to share with others the places we have been, the way we see the world and our creativity in unusual and artful creations,” Prowse added. “It is like sharing a family photo album with someone who is really interested in what you are showing them. It is also an affirmation of the work we have put into creating an image.”

Satisfaction comes from sharing their passion not only with each other, but the public. To this endeavor, the PJPC seeks to exhibit its work in community spaces as a means of connection.

Now in its 12th year, the club has an ongoing installation at Port Jefferson’s Pasta Pasta restaurant which changes seasonally. Among other accolades, its booth won first place at a recent St. James Art Walk. And PJPC has also displayed work at Gallery North’s Outdoor Art Show in Setauket, Watermark Galleries in St. James, and Bayport-Blue Point Public Library in Blue Point.

August’s show at Emma Clark Library follows July’s exhibit at the Port Jefferson Village Center. Having both personal and pragmatic benefits — friendships, greater exposure, and refinement of craft — the library exhibit is the members’ latest foray into artistic communication with an audience and one another.

“…it shows that our area has an interest in the arts and appreciates local clubs and organization involvement. Hopefully, this will encourage others to show an interest in the PJPC,” Prowse said. 

In addition to its community involvement, PJPC cultivates its artistic presence in part by facilitating its social network. The club hosts monthly lectures and goes on monthly field trips, visiting museums, beaches, New York City, etc. for group bonding, motivation, and inspiration.

“Photography gives me a chance to be creative and I love to show off my work…I love the social aspect of it,” said the Club’s Vice President Barry Bernstein.

Participating in the organization allows its members to focus the poetic precision of photography while benefiting from the camaraderie of a shared passion. It galvanizes participants to hone their craft and nurture their artistry.

“What I think is most rewarding about photography is the ability to capture a moment in time; to be able to freeze a moment of a bald eagle flying, to capture the colorful sunrises or sunsets, and to add my own creativity to what I photograph. It can be done anywhere, at anytime, with a group of people or by myself,” said PJPC President Anne DePietri.

The PJPC is committed to nurturing the creative nature of its members. Its outreach endeavors are part of a diligent effort to foster imaginative understanding and entice an engaged network. 

“Belonging to a group is so inspiring. There might be a day that is gloomy and I’m not motivated to go out and find something interesting to shoot. It helps to know that my fellow members are expecting me to present something I looked at in a different way and made an interesting photo,” Prowse said 

From those presentations, PJPC expands dialogue to move behind the club: its exhibit at Emma Clark Library is broadening the conversation between artists and audience, inviting individuals not only to observe but to partake in the process.

Photographers of any level are invited to join PJPC, which meets on the second Tuesday of the month at Port Jefferson Free Library and on the fourth Tuesday of the month over Zoom.

“We welcome new members who want to explore photography or enhance their skills,” Prowse said. “Belonging to a group is so inspiring.”

For members of PJPC, getting to show their work with their community is as gratifying and a source of continuous encouragement.

“I think one of the most rewarding parts of being a member of the Port Jefferson Photography Club is the non-judgemental support of everyone and the eagerness to share and learn from each other,” DePietri said.

Art is more than a communion between artist and audience. It is a point of entry into understanding the past, assessing the present, and perhaps even informing the future. A Noble Art: A New Look at the Portraits of William Sidney Mount on display at Long Island Museum’s Art Museum (LIM) through December 15, examines this dynamic through a 27-piece exhibit.

Considered to be the premier American genre painter, William Sidney Mount (1807-1868), who was born in Setauket and spent much of his time in Stony Brook, was a prolific portraitist who expressed the emotional essence of a person and period. 

Mount’s first solo show at the LIM since 2018, A Noble Art encompasses paintings, lithographs, drawings, correspondence, and other artifacts from the 19th century Long Island artist.

“Not many museums in the country have this depth of materials for a single artist, including personal effects…The exhibit showcases rich archival materials and works,” said Joshua Ruff, Co-Executive Director at the LIM and the curator of this exhibit.

LIM houses the largest repository of Mount materials.  A Noble Art spotlights prize items of its collection, such as Right and Left, which has been displayed in previous shows, as well as four pieces that have not previously been on public view at the museum. Among that selection are portraits of Long Island’s reputed first millionaire Captain Jonas Smith and his wife Nancy Williamson Smith, acquired by the LIM at auction in 2022. 

In addition to new acquisitions, the exhibit also reflects new information gathered in the ongoing scholarship about the 19th century Long Island native’s work, particularly his portraiture and its subjects. 

“Our Mount artwork and artifacts are the jewels of our collection — something we are really fortunate to have. It has been a long time since we had an exhibit focused on Mount’s portraiture,” Ruff said. “There have been some changes in research and improvement of knowledge about the portraits’ subjects, so it feels like time to introduce them to visitors.” 

A primary motivating factor for assembling this exhibit is the new details that have been excavated about the individuals immortalized in Mount’s paintings. In recent years, especially with the publication The Art of William Sidney Mount: Long Island People of Color on Canvas by Katherine Kirkpatrick and Vivian Nicholson-Mueller, particular attention is being paid to the Black and Indigenous people who Mount represented rather than caricatured.

“These are sensitive, not stereotypical portrayals…when you really look, there is a lot going on, like subtle symbolic references to the backgrounds of his subjects and nuanced details,” Ruff said. 

From an artistic family, Mount’s most well-known portraits are frequently of people he knew, and their warmth adds elements of intimacy and liveliness. His portraits convey both dynamically diverse and culturally unifying insights into the persons, settings, and circumstances of Long Island during the 1800s. 

A Noble Art even offers context for Mount’s own kin. His family portraits from the 1840s provide a glimpse at a creative clan and further emphasize his progression as an artist. Mount’s sister Ruth and niece Evalina were talented artists in their own right. Mount’s brother Shepard was also a portraitist, and the show features one of his pieces. 

Yet, the heart of the exhibit remains Mount’s ability to forge a connection between creator, subject, and observer. Personable renderings illuminate the evolution of Mount’s artistic intricacies, spanning decades of his work from a self-portrait made when he was 21 years old to two of the three members of his musician series: The Banjo Player and Right and Left. (The third painting of this trio, The Bone Player is on display at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.) 

His work invites the viewer to appreciate an eternal moment and recognize enduring  humanity. “With portraiture you might anticipate an element of sameness, but if you really look at Mount’s portraits there is a lot happening within them. We are excited to share this opportunity for discovery with the public,” Ruff said.

If you think back to your childhood, it’s likely you can recall moments when you were captivated by something external, like animal shapes in the clouds, or internal, like a daydream. You probably played dress-up, or with dolls or LEGOs, or fell in love with Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Disney movies.

There’s an almost universal tug we share toward things outside of the ordinary — we are drawn to dreams, fantasies, and sometimes other worlds.

Allison Cruz, executive director of the Smithtown Township Arts Council and Mills Pond Gallery in St. James, has invited artists from around the country to explore their inner worlds with a new exhibit called Imagination.  

It’s a little different than the gallery’s usual showings, but Cruz is excited to expose visitors to artistic expressions that might be unfamiliar.

“I’ve had this idea for a long time. I’m personally a fan of realism, but over time I’ve really started to appreciate imaginative realism — art about things that don’t yet exist, or might exist in the far future … fantasy, science fiction, absurd humor, escapism,” said Cruz. “It seems like there’s been a greater interest in those subjects among artists as well, so it feels like the right moment to do this. A lot of the artists have thanked me for giving them an opportunity to explore a different side of themselves. I think people will be pleasantly surprised by what they see.”

The exhibit includes the work of 62 artists and a total of 81 selected submissions in a variety of styles and mediums. Their art combines personal narrative, pop culture characters and more to speak about the stories that fill our times. Taken together, the exhibit reveals the inner workings of the artists’ minds, from the complex to the humorous and even outlandish.

Manhattan native David H. Reuss is serving as juror for Imagination. Reuss has a long history with the Mills Pond Gallery — he studied there years ago under Marvel Comics illustrator John Buscema, and later connected with Cruz through art collector Tim Newton of the renowned Salmagundi Club. 

With a background in both fine art and illustration, Cruz thought Reuss was the perfect fit for the exhibit’s themes.

“David is on the board of the Society of Illustrators but also teaches realism painting, so he straddles both worlds. He loves the gallery and has the background that was needed to appreciate imaginative work. He really personifies what we were hoping to accomplish,” she said.

Reuss reviewed nearly 300 submissions during the selection process, considering how well each one fit the theme and how his selections would work together on display. He said he was “extremely impressed with the high-level talent” of the chosen artists, adding that their art could easily appear in any major city.

“I’ve done a lot of surreal and fantastical work, and some of the submissions even leaned into illustration, so I was excited to get involved,” he said. “Everything that comes from an artist’s mind is imaginative, but this exhibit pushes those definitions a bit more — mythological concepts, abstracts, fantastical elements — to explore more of what imagination means to others.”

Keep your eyes open for the little details as you appreciate the exhibit. A painting of a cityscape could be hiding a fairy friend. An abstract design might reveal a face. An animal could change its appearance if you look long enough. What will your imagination reveal to you?

“People might not understand or like everything they see here, but art is just another way to learn about new concepts and ideas. I feel that I have a responsibility to bring all kinds of art to our communities,” Cruz said. “Art speaks with many voices, even ones you’ve never heard before. Give this exhibit a try.”

Currently on view at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, this major retrospective and groundbreaking show celebrates the life and work of one of America’s most talented and renowned makers of archtop guitars, John Monteleone.

From his 2,400-square-foot workshop in Islip, Monteleone has crafted one-of-a-kind masterpieces of functional art, coveted by leading rock, jazz, and folk guitarists of the late-20th and early-21st centuries: Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Ben Harper, Julian Lage, and Anthony Wilson, to name just a few. Monteleone also has lifelong connections to Long Island, growing up in Islip and maintaining his workshops here, initially in Bay Shore, in 1976, before opening his current shop in Islip, in 1990.

Renowned for his perfectionism and his intense concern for materials, and for facilitating versatile performance, Monteleone has made an extraordinary lifetime journey as a craftsman of his signature guitars, mandolins, and other instruments. The master luthier has garnered international acclaim for his exquisite craftsmanship and innovative designs. 

Musical Masterworks is the largest-ever exhibition of John Monteleone’s musical art assembled and offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore the artist’s extraordinary journey, beginning in the early 1970s as a repairer and maker of mandolins, to producing some of the most sought-after guitars in the world.

Featuring nearly 50 guitars, mandolins, and other instruments crafted by Monteleone between 1971 and 2023, the exhibition showcases the stunning beauty and unparalleled craftsmanship of his creations. 

“It is always my great honor and pleasure to create the resonating sonic beauty of these instruments and to hear them finally sing and speak to me,” says Monteleone. “From the trees in the forest to pulsating maple and spruces on my workbench, it is my way of giving process to unleashing the songs within the wood.”

Highlights include the famed Four Seasons guitar quartet (2002-2006), on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and pictured above; Monteleone’s groundbreaking Rocket Convertible guitar (1997); his beautifully ornamented Radio Wave (2004); and many examples of special model guitars and mandolins: Eclipse, Radio City, Grand Artist, the Train series, and more. Featuring guitars from private collections in Texas, Florida, Ohio, and Vermont, the exhibition will also be displaying iconic and historic guitars from Gibson, John D’Angelico, James D’Aquisto, and Selmer-Maccaferri.
