The Stony Brook volleyball team earned a three-set sweep (25-22, 26-24, 25-19) against the Campbell Fighting Camels on Nov. 16 on the road at Gilbert Craig Gore Arena in Buies Creek N.C.

The victory moved the Seawolves’ record to 16-12 overall and 9-9 in CAA play to close out the regular season. Stony Brook would clinch their third-straight CAA postseason berth after securing the win.

Kali Moore finished with 14 kills on the day to lead the Seawolves as Abby Campbell, Leoni Kunz, Quinn Anderson, and Ayanna Pierre Louis each contributed to the Stony Brook attack. Defensively, Madison Cigna and Julia Patsos each tallied double figure digs with 16 and 11, respectively.

The team will head to Towson University for the CAA Championships beginning on Nov. 21. Stony Brook earned the No. 6 seed and will face the No. 3 seed with the race for the top spots still being determined in either Charleston, Delaware, Hofstra, or Towson. The match is set for 6 p.m. with coverage available on FloVolleyball.

The Stony Brook University volleyball team concluded play against Charleston with a weekend split, defeating the Cougars in a five-set thriller on Oct. 5 at home in Pritchard Gymnasium.

In the third set, Torri Henry became the third student-athlete in program history to record 4,000 assists for their career. She is behind leader Sarah Boeckel with 4,949, followed by Julie Zub tallying 4,926.

The Seawolves were led by a double-double from Leoni Kunz, who registered 14 kills and 17 digs on the day. Kali Moore also added 26 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Julia Patsos chipped in for with 22 digs to go with six blocks from Mercedes Motton.

SET 1 | The Seawolves grabbed control of the first set early and held the lead the rest of the way to win, 25-17. Stony Brook had a match-high .394 hitting with 16 kills through the opening frame, led by Moore with nine. A solid defensive performance from the front row blocked four Charleston attacks to help secure a first set victory.

SET 2 | Up 1-0, Stony Brook put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 28-26 victory in second set. The Seawolves came out on top of a tight second set, winning in a stanza that was tied six times and had four lead changes. The Seawolves racked up 19 kills over the course of the set, hitting .224.

SET 3 | Stony Brook couldn’t finish off the sweep, losing the third set in a back-and-forth battle. Neither the Seawolves or Cougars had a lead of more than two points in a set that featured four lead changes and nine ties.

 SET 4 | Stony Brook then dropped their second straight set 25-22 to bring the match level. The Cougars had their best performance of the day hitting .354 with 19 kills. The Seawolves had 15 kills of their own with four from Quinn Anderson who tied her career-high 15 on the day.

SET 5 | The Seawolves scored first and never trailed in the deciding set to secure the victory. Stony Brook opened up as much as a six-point lead at 11-5 before finishing off the match. Stony Brook also supplemented their offense with three aces in the final set, led by Madison Cigna.  

“Every CAA match is going to be a battle, and our team showed incredible toughness today. We were disciplined from the start and mentally strong enough to make adjustments as needed and not get too high or low emotionally. Proud of our team for gutting this one out,” noted head coach Kristin Belzung.

The Stony Brook volleyball team fell to Towson in straight sets (20-25, 19-25, 16-25) on Oct. 22 at TU Arena.

Abby Campbell finished with eight kills on the day to lead the Seawolves’ offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .250. Defensively, Stony Brook got 18 digs from Julia Patsos to pace the team.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

SET 1 | Stony Brook jumped out to an early 8-4 lead following a kill by Ava Jackson. Later in the set, the Seawolves re-took the lead after a kill by Campbell for a 16-15 advantage. But, Towson would grab the advantage for good at 17-16, in a set that was tied up nine times before the Tigers took over in the second half of the stanza, winning 25-20.

SET 2 | The Seawolves again jumped out to an early advantage. Campbell led the way in the beginning of the set after her kill gave the Seawolves a 7-3 lead and then a service ace giving Stony Brook a 9-5 lead. However, the Tigers would tie the match at 13 and never relinquished the lead after taking a 15-14 advantage. Towson won four of the last five point to close out a 25-19 victory.

SET 3 | The Seawolves controlled an early 3-2 lead following the kill by Leoni Kunz, but could not tame the Tigers, who would rally for 10 of the next 12 points to take control of the set and grab the sweep, pulling away to a 25-16 victory.

STATS AND NOTES 

  • Stony Brook attackers were helped by a team-high 27 assists from Torri Henry.
  • The loss dropped Stony Brook’s record to 10-13 overall and 5-7 in CAA action.
  • The Seawolves had four aces from four different players on the afternoon.

The team return to the court next weekend when they host William & Mary on Oct. 28 and 29 at 1 p.m. inside Pritchard Gymnasium. Stony Brook is 1-2 all-time against the Tribe after defeating them in their last meeting in five sets on Oct. 2, 2022 in Williamsburg.

Kali Moore and Leoni Kunz both registered double-doubles to help propel the Stony Brook volleyball team to a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-23, 25-16) against the College of Charleston Cougars on Sept. 24 at the TD Arena.

The Seawolves were led by the double-doubles from Kunz, who had 11 kills and 15 digs, and Moore, who had 14 kills and 15 digs. Abby Campbell added 10 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Julia Patsos chipped in for 16 digs to go with seven blocks from Campbell. 

Stony Brook opened up an early one set to none lead, taking a nail-biter first set 25-23. The squad grabbed the advantage for good at 24-23 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Seawolves took over in the second half of the stanza. The Seawolves had a terrific defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Charleston (SC) attacks in the stanza. Campbell tallied two of the final three points for the team after blocking two balls from the Cougars to secure the opening set. 

The Seawolves persevered in a back-and-forth second set to win in the stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied nine times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way. After Charleston cut the deficit to 21-20, Moore tallied two kills and a service-ace to ultimately lead Stony Brook to the third-set victory 25-23.

In the third set, the Seawolves took control of the set early when the score was 4-3 and never looked back to win 25-16. Stony Brook led by as many as 10 points at 22-12 after Ayanna Pierre Louis tallied the ace. The team had a hitting perctange of 0.333 and captured 16 kills to secure the sweep. 

“It feels great to be heading home with this win and even more so because of the way our team responded from yesterdays loss. I thought we came focused and competed as a team. We executed the game plan defensively and that gave us better opportunities to score. Excited to be back home in Pritchard next weekend,” said head coach Kristin Belzung. 

The team returns to the court next weekend when they host North Carolina A&T on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. inside Pritchard Gymnasium.

The Stony Brook volleyball team ended their weekend at the Saint Francis Tournament in Loreto, PA with a straight-set victory over Manhattan, followed by a defeat in the five-set thriller to Saint Francis (PA) on Sept. 2.

Setter Torri Henry was garnished to the All-Tournament Team for the 2023 Red Flash Classic after finishing her weekend with 133 assists (49,33,51), 22 digs, eight kills, and four aces in three matches.

In their first set of the afternoon, the Seawolves came out firing from the service line by tallying five aces to ultimately take the set. After trailing 15-12, Stony Brook stormed back to score 9 of the next points to take the 21-16 lead. Madison Cigna notched two assists and Leoni Kunz and Abby Campbell each tallied two kills to push the run. Ashleigh Woodruff ended the set with a kill to secure the 25-22 first set victory. 

Stony Brook wasted no time in the second set as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the Seawolves tallied four consecutive kills, including two by Abby Stanwood. The Jaspers did cut the deficit to 7-6, but the squad tallied 12 of the next 16 points to ultimately take the second set, 25-15. 

To complete the sweep, Stony Brook leaped to a 10-3 lead to begin the set and did not look back. The Seawolves ended the set by claiming its biggest lead, 12 points, to close out the Jaspers, 25-13, and finish off the sweep. 

Looking to bounce back following the 25-20 defeat in the opening set against the Friars, Stony Brook led by as many as nine points at 15-6 before finishing off the second set with a 25-20 victory, totaling 15 kills in the process. Stony Brook’s front row led by Campbell, Henry, and Moore had a spectacular defensive performance, blocking four Saint Francis (PA) attacks in the stanza. 

Stony Brook built on that second-set success with a 25-11 win in set number three to open up a lead at two sets to one. The Seawolves led from the first point on to secure the 25-11 victory. The squad claimed its biggest lead, 14 points, to close out the set after recording five blocks and three aces during the stretch. 

Following the 25-20 defeat in the fourth set to force a deciding fifth set, the Seawolves took an early 4-3 lead after Moore tallied one of her team-high 24 kills. Saint Francis (PA) and Stony Brook went back-and-forth to force a 15-15 tie, but the Friars would tally three of the final four points to take the set 18-16 and ultimately the match in five sets. 

MATCH 1: STONY BROOK – 3, MANHATTAN – 0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-13)

  • Moore had a match-high three aces in the win.
  • Stony Brook served up five aces on the way to a first-set victory.
  • Stony Brook never trailed in the second or third set.
  • Stanwood had a match-high and new career-high 14 kills for Stony Brook.
  • Stony Brook got a match-high five digs from Moore.
  • Stony Brook attackers were helped by a match-high 33 assists from Henry.
  • Stony Brook is now 9-6 all-time against Manhattan.

MATCH 2: STONY BROOK 2 – , SAINT FRANCIS (PA) – 3 (20-25, 25-20, 25-11, 20-25, 16-18)

  • Stony Brook had three players in double figures in digs (Patsos, Henry, and Moore)
  • Henry had a match-high three aces in the loss.
  • Moore registered a double-double with 24 kills and 10 digs. It was the most kills by any Seawolf this season and a new career-best for the sophomore.
  • Stony Brook never trailed on the way to winning the third set 25-11.
  • Stony Brook got a match-high 17 digs from Julia Patsos. She now has 10 or more digs in four of the six matches this season.
  • Stony Brook attackers were helped by a match-high and season-high 51 assists from Henry. It was her most since she had 53 against Fordham on August 28, 2022.
  • The Seawolves are now 7-1 all-time against Saint Francis.
  • Tonight marks the first time this season that the Seawolves played five sets.

“While the results from this weekend aren’t fully what we wanted, I am seeing good growth in our group, especially as we’re still tinkering with the lineup. It was great to bounce back and get a sweep of Manhattan. I’m happy with our group’s fight in the second match of the day but we need to play a cleaner game to finish the job. We are excited to compete in front of our home crowd on Wednesday and look forward to a packed Pritchard,” said head coach Kristin Belzung

Stony Brook will return to the court on Wednesday as they host Columbia University inside Pritchard Gymnasium for their first home match of the season. The Seawolves are looking to continue their success against the Lions, as they are 6-2 all-time against the Ivy League opponent.
