Senior Jonas Bickus tallied his fourth goal of the season, but the Stony Brook men’s soccer team ultimately fell to Drexel  University 2-1 on Oct. 12 at Lavalle Stadium.

Drexel put pressure on the Seawolves early after scoring a pair of goals in the 16th and 22nd minute from Giancarlo Vaccaro and Dominick Bachstein.

Stony Brook wasted no time answering back as Jonas Bickus scored off a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, cutting the deficit in half. The Seawolves goalie Rushon Sandy would make three saves through the first half to hold the score as Stony Brook only trailed by one.

In the second half, the Seawolves tallied more shots and corner kicks, but the Dragon held on making four saves in the second frame to secure the 2-1 victory.

The squad will return to the pitch on Oct. 19 when they head to North Carolina to take on UNC Wilmington.

The Stony Brook men’s soccer team came up short against Campbell, 6-0, on Oct. 5 on the road at Eakes Athletics Complex in Blues Creek, N.C. Stony Brook dropped to 2-5-3 overall and 0-3-2 in CAA play after the loss.

The Camels jumped on the board with a pair of goals in the first half as Owen Mikoy scored in the ninth minute and Luc Lavielle in the 25th. Stony Brook was able to keep Campbell off the board for the remainder of the first half as the Seawolves trailed, 2-0. Olsen Aluc and Caleb Danquah had one shot each in the first 45 minutes.

Campbell added to their lead in the second half as they recorded four goals in the frame. Danquah would tally the first shot on goal for the Seawolves in the 52nd minute, trying to squeeze it past Samy Slimi through the bottom left corner.  Lorenzo Selini fired off one of his own in the 71st minute with a shot to the bottom center of the net that would be turned away.

The Stony Brook University men’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw with the Northeastern Huskies on Sept. 27 at LaValle Stadium. The result brings the Seawolves’ overall record to 1-4-3 on the season.

Stony Brook started quick offensively, creating their first chance of the day in the opening five minutes of play. A shot from Jonas Bickus forced Northeastern’s Colby Hegarty to make an early save. The Huskies responded with a shot of their own in the 15th minute, Rushon Sandy to make one stop to keep the match level.

Opportunities were plentiful as Alex Fleury in the 31st minute had a brilliant shot that bypassed Hegarty, but the Northeastern defense was able to make the team save. Despite another pair of first half chances as Moses Bakabulindi and Trevor Harrison each fired on net, the match would remain scoreless heading into the second half.

Fleury would tally another shot to get things started in the final 45 minutes, while Bakabulindi followed behind with one of his own in the 82nd minute. Stony Brook controlled possession and tried to get ahead as Bickus and Harrison each had an opportunity in the final two minutes of play.

Neither side could generate a score in the match, sending both sides home with a point in the conference standings.

“We got the clean sheet and defended well, I thought we created some good chances. Disappointed though to not get three points out of the game. I thought both halves we were the better team, but we’ve got to do better in front of goal. I think we have the opportunity to create even more chances, but from a performance standpoint it was a good performance. We put ourselves in a position to win the game, but we’ve got to do more to get those three points,” stated head coach Ryan Anatol postgame.

A tally late in the game was the difference maker on Aug. 29 as the Stony Brook men’s soccer team was defeated by the Rider Broncs, 1-0. The loss drops the Seawolves to 0-2-1 on the season.

Both Stony Brook and Rider kept each other off the scoreboard through the first half with a dominating display of defensive prowess. The Seawolves were able to fire off six shots through the opening 45 minutes on the back of Trevor Harrison.

Stony Brook was able to then tally another six shots in the second half and create a late flurry of possession and pressure, but a backwards pass wrangled by the Broncs’ Bryan Akongo would become the deciding goal for Rider in the 87th minute. 

One of Stony Brook’s best chances of the night came in the 62nd minute, when Alex Fleury fired a shot from the top of the box that ultimately hit the crossbar.

“Overall, from a performance standpoint, I thought we started off a little slow in the first half through the first 10-15 minutes, but then I thought we were pretty good, creating some chances and moving the ball pretty well,” head coach Ryan Anatol stated postgame.

“Second half, we were on top of them for large periods and created some good chances, one hit off the post. We got to score goals and put some of those away. We kept them in the game and then a mistake at this level, you get punished. I’m disappointed with the result, but I thought we defended well and were solid on both sides of the ball. We just have to finish our chances and can’t give up the ball like that,” he added.

The team was back on their home pitch looking for their first win of the season on September 3 as they took on George Washington. Results were not available as of press time.

The Stony Brook University men’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw against William & Mary in the regular-season finale in Williamsburg, VA on Oct. 27. Edmond Kaiser made eight saves, keeping the Tribe off the scoreboard and helping the Seawolves secure a much-needed point to close the regular season.

The story of the match was undoubtedly Kaiser’s play in net. The graduate keeper from Germany stood on his head, turning away tries from the Tribe time after time. Three of his eight saves on the evening came during the first half, with two of the three being turned away in the opening 25 minutes of play.

After a scoreless first half of action that saw the Seawolves muster just two shots on goal, the Tribe turned it on. William & Mary kept the pressure in the offensive third, but never could get one past Kaiser. The Stony Brook keeper was right back into action early in the second half, stopping a near-side try from a charging William & Mary attacker.
 
Perhaps his best save of the night came on a scramble in the box that led to a right-footed rocket of a shot that Kaiser got a hand on.
 
Not only did William & Mary have no luck in beating Kaiser directly, they also saw a pair of shots clang off the post and crossbar in the second half. When all was said and done, the Seawolves would walk away with a point in a road showdown in Virginia.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Kaiser’s eight saves are his most since stopping nine at Hofstra in September. His eight stops in goal helped him notch his fourth shutout of the season.
  • Stony Brook registered just three shots on goal, one each from Olsen Aluc, Moses Bakabulindi and Amit Magoz.
  • The Seawolves were outshot 19-6 in the contest and 12-1 in the second half.
  • With the point, Stony Brook moves into sole possession of first place in the CAA heading into the final day of the regular season. The Seawolves entered play in a three-way tie with Hofstra and Monmouth, with the Pride and Hawks each owning the tiebreaker over the Seawolves for the first and second spots in the table.
  • Stony Brook is guaranteed a top-three finish in the CAA, regardless of tomorrow’s results around the league. The top-three finish is the program’s best since winning the 2018 America East Regular Season Championship and earning the No. 1 seed.

The Stony Brook University men’s soccer team and Le Moyne played to a 3-3 draw on Oct. 11  at LaValle Stadium. Olsen Aluc, Jonas Bickus and Trevor Harrison netted goals in the high-scoring affair.

Le Moyne took an early lead when Jakob Priestman scored in the fourth minute, breaking the ice with the assist from Ziad Abdul-Malak. The Seawolves responded before the end of the half, getting an equalizer from Harrison in the 40th minute. Harrison had an acrobatic finish on the pass from Moses Bakabulindi to level the score before the break.


Stony Brook took a 2-1 lead on Bickus’ 54th-minute goal, his seventh of the season, a new career high for the junior. Alex Fleury and Harrison had the helpers on the goal that put Stony Brook in front for the moment.

The Dolphins quickly evened the match with a 55th-minute penalty kick goal from Jack Goodrich. The Seawolves again regained the lead after Aluc netted a penalty kick of his own in the 62nd minute.

Le Moyne answered, getting a goal to level the match at 3-3 thanks to a 66th-minute header from Abdul-Malak. A magnificent late chance for Bickus on a cross from Aluc was turned away at the doorstep by Le Moyne’s Matthew Gera and the score would hold as the clock ran out on the Island.

“I didn’t think it was our best performance tonight,” head coach Ryan Anatol noted postgame. “We’ve got to defend better, we can’t give up three goals. The guys competed, battled, and worked, but overall I didn’t think it was our best performance.”
