I stepped out the back door into the clear and bracing evening air, under the inky black dome of the night sky pockmarked with the stars in the constellation of Orion and the luminous planetary dot of Venus to the southeast. Within a few seconds I hear a call: several deep hoots of a Great Horned Owl, repeated three more times in quick succession. It’s a sequence that one ornithologist characterizes as: “Who’s awake, me too!” While I couldn’t see it, I suspected the bird was hooting from a large white pine on the south side of the neighbor’s yard and its presence filled me with excitement as it always does when hearing or seeing an owl.   

Several species of owls, varying in abundance, seasonality, and habitat, can be found on Long Island; some  nest while a few don’t breed on Long Island but overwinter, while still others migrate through the island. In addition to the Great Horned Owl, they include the Screech Owl, the winter visiting Snowy and Short-eared Owls, and the uncommon Long-eared and Saw-whet Owls. Frequenting barns and other structures is the strikingly beautiful Barn Owl. A very rare winter visitor, having visited just a few times in the past century, is the stunning Great Grey Owl, associated with more northerly latitudes. Currently, ornithologists have documented 254 owl species globally.

Perhaps the most coveted owl to lay your eyes on is the Snowy Owl, which possesses a  snowy white plumage in adult male birds. Adult females and immature birds of both sexes have black flaking. This species is an open country bird, preferring the windswept habitats of its breeding range — open dunes and heathland and, unlike most owl species, is active during the day.

The south shore barrier islands, including Jones Beach and Robert Moses State Parks, can be fruitful areas to look for this diurnal species. As for a search image, think a white paper bag situated atop a dune crest. Driving the stretch of Dune Road from Shinnecock Inlet west to Cupsogue County Park is also worthwhile.

Snowy Owls appear almost every winter in a still not fully understood response to prey abundance in the Arctic. It used to be thought the movement of the species southward was tightly correlated with a decrease in abundance of their prey, lemmings. The phenomenon is not that clear cut and scientists aren’t fully sure what drives their long and stressful southbound journeys.

The Short-eared Owl is another species associated with open country that’s active during the day.  Short-eared have an infinity for grasslands, meadows, and marshes. This species was once an uncommon breeding bird; it is now quite rare, if it still breeds here at all. The best bet to see this handsome species is as an overwintering bird probably at the former Grumman property in Calverton. The grassy margins of the formerly used runways support small mammals like mice and voles which the owl feeds on. Short-eared can also be occasionally viewed perched on telephone poles along Dune Road.

The closely related Long-eared Owl is uncommon on Long Island and if it breeds here at all it is in very low numbers. It is seen most often as an overwintering bird, typically perched in conifers or evergreens. One of my fonder memories involving this group of birds was seeing, many decades ago, several Long-eareds perched together in evergreen shrubs first found by fellow birders and friends Bob McGrath and Rich Gostic, on an estate property on the east side of the Nissequogue River. Based on the pellets and white wash it was clear the roost had been used for some time.  Unfortunately, the estate was developed in the 1980’s and the owl patch destroyed.

In my youth I worked at the 133-acre Hoyt Farm Preserve in Commack. For many years a pair of Barn Owls nested in the old wooden tower that once provided water for the farm. A highlight for me and other staff was to periodically climb the metal rungs of the ladder to gain entry into the tower and band the young owls. During the banding process they would hiss loudly along with their parents, comically rocking their heads back and forth. Unfortunately, as the land around the preserve was developed, there apparently wasn’t enough habitat to sustain an ample prey base needed to sustain the pair of barn owls and their young, as they haven’t nested at the preserve in many decades.

The Northern Saw-whet Owl is perhaps the least known of our native owl species. It is also the smallest, topping out at about eight inches from top of head to tail tip and tipping the scales at less than three ounces. (In contrast, the aforementioned Snowy Owl weighs about four pounds). The Saw-whet’s name derives from the fact its call sounds a bit like the sound made when whetting or sharpening a saw. This diminutive bird has a preference for tangles — vines and tightly growing pine branches — where it hides during the day. It has been recorded as breeding on Long Island although it is seen much more often during fall migration and as an overwintering bird. Want to see the definition of cuteness? Both the Great Horned Owl and its diminutive cousin the Screech Owl are woodland birds. Both species have ‘horns’ which are really vertical feather tufts, as does the aforementioned Long-eared; they play no role in defense or hearing.

The Great Horned Owl is the earliest nesting bird and at the time this article appears adults will be incubating eggs, providing them with life-giving heat. Several years ago I was checking out a wooded Town of Brookhaven preserve in Holbrook when I saw what I thought was a white plastic bag partially hidden behind an oak tree. Coming around the tree I was startled to see not a bag but a wet Great Horned owl fledgling sitting amidst the damp leaves. I knew if there was one fledgling there were likely more and after some searching I found two other fledglings, one of which, perched on a fallen pine tree, was already growing into its adult plumage. An adult perched in a live upright pine tree nearby kept a steady eye on both me and her precocious babies. 

The Screech Owl is probably the most common and widespread owl species found here with breeding pairs likely inhabiting most  woodlots five to ten acres or larger. Like the Saw-whet, Screech Owls are cavity nesters, using holes excavated in trees by woodpeckers. Unlike almost all of the other eighteen North American owl species, the Screech owl is polymorphic, a fancy term meaning the species  has three color morphs or forms — a grey plumage form, a rufous colored one and a form intermediate (which I have never seen). Of the several dozen screech owls I’ve had the pleasure of seeing on Long Island, I’ve only seen the rufous morph although I’ve seen the grey form a few times in other places.

The most well-known Screech Owl on Long Island undoubtedly is Alfie, made famous through Carl Safina’s wonderful book Alfie & Me, in which, in part, he describes the trials and tribulations of nursing a very sick Screech Owl fledgling back to health, assisting with her successful re-wilding, and watching her blossom into a devoted parent, raising, to date, 15 young in the woodlands in and adjacent to his Setauket residence. 

Screech owls are misnamed — rather, the ‘screech’ title belongs to the Barn Owl, which emits a haunting sounding hiss or screech when agitated or disturbed. Screech owl vocalizations, which I occasionally hear in my backyard and on the hikes around Long Island, aren’t screechy at all; indeed they are rather pleasant sounding — a two parted horse like whinny followed by a pulsing whistle. I encourage you to listen to a recording of its call.

A puzzle regarding the presence of owl species on Long Island is the dearth of Barred Owls. This species, well-known for its distinctive “Who-cooks-for-you?, Who-cooks-for-you-all?” call is very rarely heard or seen here. This is a bit surprising since the species is fairly common in areas north and west of the island such as southern Connecticut and northern and central New Jersey. Its scarcity might be due to the fact that it prefers large, extensive tracts of forested wetlands such as tupelo-red maple swamps and these areas on Long Island are rarely more than a couple dozen acres in size at most.    

Owls are well adapted to being “denizens of the dark.” They possess exceptional vision and hearing and have feathers that dampen or eliminate sound as they fly. Owls see quite well in the dark, an obvious necessity for a nocturnal lifestyle.

One reason is the size of their eyes. Great-horned Owls have large barrel-shaped eyes they cannot move, so to change its field of view an owl must turn its head. Another reason is due to the abundance of rod cells in their eyes which help them to detect light; they have about 50% more rods than we do. Lastly, owls have forward facing eyes enabling binocular vision, like us, which helps with depth perception, a key attribute when hunting prey that is small, mobile and fast. Their forward facing eyes is what imparts the ‘wise’ look unique to owls. 

Their hearing is remarkably acute as well due to the fact their ear openings are asymmetrically positioned on each side of the owl’s head. This allows for an owl to not only detect if a mouse is rustling to its left or right (the vertical plane) but whether it’s on the ground or in a bush a few feet off the ground (the horizontal plane). Experiments with Barn owls in totally dark situations proved this species can successfully capture prey using hearing alone.

The leading edge of an owl’s flight feathers is “fluted” which creates a soft edge that muffles sound, rather than a hard or straight edge like in a duck or seagull. This feature enables silent flight, a great advantage to a bird, gifting it the element of surprise. Interestingly, owl species like the Blakiston’s Fish Owl, the largest owl in the world, that feed on species that cannot detect the sound of an owl, like fish, lack the fluted edge. No need to evolve silent flight when your prey can’t hear you to begin with.

A good way to acquaint yourself with this remarkable and charismatic group of birds is to join a local Audubon chapter or Sweetbriar Nature Center on an organized nocturnal “owl prowl” or venture out to the Calverton Grasslands or Jones Beach to see one of the species active during the day. If you do and are lucky enough to hear or see an owl I bet you’ll be filled with excitement too!

Many risk factors can be managed with lifestyle changes

February has been named American Heart Month by the American Heart Association, providing us with a reminder during the Valentine’s Day month to build heart-healthy habits.

Improved medicines, earlier treatment of risk factors, and an embrace of lifestyle modifications have helped reduce the prevalence of heart disease and remind us that it is ultimately preventable.

How do you reduce heart disease risk?

Major heart disease risk factors include obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes. Unfortunately, rates of obesity and diabetes are both still rising. For patients with type 2 diabetes, 70 percent die of cardiovascular causes (1).

A key contributor is the standard American diet, which is rich in saturated fat and calories (2). This drives atherosclerosis, fatty streaks in the arteries.

A high resting heart rate is another potential risk factor. In one study, healthy men and women had 18 and 10 percent increased risks of dying from a heart attack, respectively, for every increase of 10 beats per minute (bpm) over 80 (3). A normal resting heart rate is typically between 60 and 100 bpm, so a high-normal rate has increased risk.

When does medication help?

Cholesterol and blood pressure medications have reducing some heart disease risk. according to the American Society of Hypertension, compliance with taking blood pressure medications has increased over the last 10 years from 33 to 50 percent.

Statins have also played a role in primary prevention. They lower lipid levels, including total cholesterol and LDL — the “bad” cholesterol. In addition, they lower inflammation levels that contribute to cardiovascular disease risk. The Jupiter trial showed statins contributed to a 55 percent combined reduction in heart disease, stroke and mortality from cardiovascular disease in healthy patients, those with slightly elevated levels of inflammation and normal cholesterol profiles.

Statins do have side effects, though. They’ve been shown to increase the risk of diabetes in intensive dosing, compared to moderate dosing (4). Many who are on statins also suffer from myopathy (muscle pain and cramping).

I’m often approached by patients on statins with this complaint. Their goal is to reduce and ultimately discontinue statins by modifying their diet and exercise plans.

Lifestyle modification is a powerful ally.

Which lifestyle changes reduce heart disease risk the most?

The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging investigated 501 healthy men and their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. The authors concluded that those who consumed five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily with <12 percent saturated fat reduced their risk of dying from heart disease by 76 percent, compared to those who did not meet these criteria (5). The authors theorized that eating more fruits and vegetables helped to displace saturated fats from the diet.

The Nurses’ Health Study shows that these results are also seen in women. Lifestyle modification reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) (6). This is often the first manifestation of heart disease in women. The authors looked at four parameters of lifestyle modification, including a Mediterranean-type diet, exercise, smoking and body mass index. The decrease in SCD was dose-dependent, meaning the more factors incorporated, the greater the risk reduction. There was as much as a 92 percent decrease in SCD risk when all four parameters were followed.

In a cohort study of high-risk participants and those with heart disease, patients implemented extensive lifestyle modification: a plant-based, whole foods diet accompanied by exercise and stress management. Study results showed an improvement in biomarkers, as well as in cognitive function and overall quality of life over a very short period — three months from the start of the trial (7). Outside of this study environment, many of my own patients have experienced similar results.

How do you monitor your heart disease risk?

Physicians use cardiac biomarkers, including blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass index, alongside inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein to monitor your risk. Ideally, if you need to use medications to treat risk factors for heart disease, you should strive for short-term intervention. For some, it may be best to use medication and lifestyle changes together; for patients who take an active role, lifestyle modifications may be sufficient.

By focusing on developing heart-healthy habits, you can improve the likelihood that you will be around for a long time.

With flowers blooming and birds chirping, you may be in a spring-cleaning mindset. As you spruce up your home, you can also channel that energy into getting your finances in tip-top shape!

According to CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNING® professionals, here’s how to clear away the cobwebs in your budget:

Sort expenditures: If you’ve ever sorted your clothes and other items into piles during a spring clean, this budgeting principle will be familiar to you: Review your expenses and categorize them into needs, wants and expenditures you’re ready to part with. Whether you do this on paper or electronically, use a color-coded system to visualize where your money is going.

Review your streaming services: Electronic subscription bloat is common, as is paying for forgotten subscriptions after free trials end. For example, you may be subscribed to several of the most common entertainment streaming services, such as Netflix, Max and Hulu. Do you really need all of them? Whether it’s an online newsletter or a music streaming service, cancel unused subscriptions.

Avoid bank fees: Review your bank statements. Are you getting dinged with fees? Consider switching to a bank that doesn’t charge an account maintenance fee. You can also set up notifications to avoid having your account get hit with an overdraft. If you do get charged, contact your bank to explain your situation — you may be able to have some fees waived.

Switch insurance carriers: Periodically review your insurance rates, and shop the market to see if better rates are available for home, automotive and other forms of insurance.

Reduce debt: If your debt is costing you a pretty penny, it’s time to act. A CFP® professional or credit counselor can help you craft a plan for consolidating debt into lower-rate credit card accounts, refinancing your mortgage and reducing your overall debt burden. You should also automate credit card payments (and other bills) to ensure you aren’t paying late fees.

Pay yourself first: Earmark a portion of your budget to savings and investments each month. This will leave you with more money for your important goals and less for frivolous spending.

High school students can have their first immersive college experience at Stony Brook University’s Pre-College Summer Program, the residential program for rising high school juniors and seniors.

The Pre-College Summer Program offers one- to two-week courses that provide attendees with the opportunity to have a college campus experience, take courses, participate in workshops, and access resources across campus, including bridging connections with Stony Brook faculty and industry experts.

Throughout the program, attendees will connect with like-minded program participants, while learning to transition to college life and explore areas they might want to pursue a degree in. Prospective attendees must apply to be accepted into the Pre-College Summer Program.

There are a number of discounts available. High school students who apply before March 7 will receive a discount of $100 on the program fee, while those who are currently enrolled in Accelerated College Education at Stony Brook University will receive a $150 discount, and those who qualify for free and reduced lunch will receive a $250 discount on the program fee.

Scholarship opportunities are also being offered for future Seawolves. Students who attend the Stony Brook Pre-College Summer Program this year and subsequently apply, get accepted and enroll at Stony Brook will be eligible for two possible scholarships: New York State residents will receive a $1,000 scholarship over four years ($250 per year) and out-of-state residents will receive a $2,000 scholarship over four years ($500 per year).

Courses include:

  • Aerial Robotics, where participants will learn how to build a robot of their own – a micro quadcopter drone – and program it to fly itself across an arena.
  • Introduction to Biotechnology, where participants will be introduced to some of the basic techniques used in the field of biotechnology.
  • Cancer Biology, where participants will conduct hands-on experiments to create extracts containing phytochemicals and learn what happens when these extracts are used to treat cancer cells.
  • Communicating Science, where participants will develop tools to effectively communicate in a way that excites, engages, and encourages audiences to want to learn more about science.
  • Computational Linguistics, which introduces participants to the wonders of natural languages and the analytical methods underlying natural language technologies, including AI, used worldwide.
  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Additive Manufacturing, where participants will learn the principles of CAD software for 3D modeling and assembly, the basics of additive manufacturing and its applications in engineering, and the design process, including requirements analysis and prototyping.
  • Creative Writing, where participants will read and discuss contemporary works of nonfiction, fiction, and poetry as well as practice writing around these genres through exercises.
  • Dental Sciences, where participants can obtain hands-on experience in an advanced preclinical laboratory as well as discover what it’s like to be a dental student.
  • Electrical Engineering, where participants will explore the fundamentals and practice of engineering.
  • Engineering Problem Solving with AI, where participants will discover how to find engineering solutions using generative AI.
  • Environmental Science in the Worm Lab, where participants will design and conduct experiments in ecotoxicology including using experimental design, data collection and data analysis.
  • Finding Your Passion in Health Professions, where participants will learn about advancing career options and discover what it takes to become a successful member of today’s interprofessional healthcare team.
  • Introduction to Engineering Design, where participants will experience the fundamentals of engineering through hands-on activities and projects. They will work with hand tools, learn the basics of 3D printing, and engage in practical problem-solving to design, build, and test their own creations.
  • Machine Learning and Self-Driving, where participants will be introduced to machine learning and self-driving through both lectures and hands-on interactive exercises with self-developed remote-control vehicles.
  • Micro Filmmaking, where  participants will learn visual storytelling by developing a micro screenplay and ultimately create a final micro film.
  • Pre-Law, where participants will learn civil law concepts, including intentional torts, negligence, product liability and contracts.
  • Robotics Engineering, where participants will be taught the fundamentals of robotics, including practical electronics, mechanical design, and microcontroller programming. They’ll develop problem-solving skills, advance critical thinking, and broaden creative and innovative reasoning.
  • Sustainability in Action, where participants will learn about local, regional, national, and international efforts at sustainability through brief lectures in the morning, guided research into examples of sustainability, and afternoon field trips to locations on and off campus to see sustainability in action.
  • TV Studio & Video Production, where participants will have hands-on experience in video production and explore camera operation, composition, video editing, and production techniques in a state-of-the-art broadcast studio and computer classroom.
  • Understanding Public Health, where participants will participate in this experiential program offered by Stony Brook University’s School of Health Professions, where they will learn about advancing career options and discovering what it takes to become a successful member of today’s interprofessional healthcare team.

Participating students can take courses, led by Stony Brook faculty, all while living on the Stony Brook campus. Students also have the opportunity to participate in recreational activities held on campus. In addition, the program is supplemented by participation in college readiness workshops.

“Pre-College Summer is designed to give participants a preview of college life and give them the confidence necessary to successfully navigate the transition from high school to university. Because our courses are non credit bearing, there is no added pressure of tests and assignments to complete, only an immersive, hands-on learning experience for our participants,” said Tayyiba Qureshi, interim director of the Pre-College Summer Program. “This also allows our instructors the creative license to paint on a clean canvas in ways that make learning transformative, fun and inspiring. It’s an opportunity for them to preview a field of study and perhaps decide if they want to pursue it as an undergraduate – or they may walk away from the program thinking ‘this is not what I want to do for the rest of my life!’ That’s the beauty of this program, it’s the realistic introduction to college and all of its intricacies without the lasting commitment.”

Courses will be held across four sessions throughout the month of July

  • Session One: July 6-11
  • Session Two: July 13-18
  • Session Three: July 20-25
  • Session Four: July 27-August 1.

The program cost is $2,250 ($2,000 is the discounted rate for free or reduced lunch recipients). Applications close on May 30, 2025. The application process involves submitting the applicant’s high school transcript, a reference, a short essay, and a $45 application fee.

Theatre Three’s latest children’s show has a lot of brains, heart and courage, but you certainly won’t want to go home. 

An original musical adapted from the stories of L. Frank Baum by Jeffrey Sanzel and Douglas J. Quattrock, Dorothy’s Adventures in Oz is a fun-filled tale of the timeless classic that will have families in the audience smiling from ear to ear. 

As the show opens, we meet Dorothy Gale (Cassidy Rose O’Brien), chief editor of her high school newspaper, the Baum Bugle. She brings her dog Toto (Tasha Poyfair) around, much to her teachers’ dismay, and unintentionally hurts her best friend, Judy Gumm’s (Sophia Del Carmen) feelings when she cuts her story from the latest edition. 

We meet her teachers, Mr. Green (Jason Furnari), the nasty Miss Ravine (Louisa Bikowski) and the sweet Miss Morgan (Julia Albino), along with her principal, Mr. Henry (Liam Marsigliano), who all warn Dorothy to get inside before a big storm comes by.

A tornado hits and when Dorothy awakes, her newspaper stand has fallen upon a witch wearing ruby red slippers. She’s greeted by Glinda (Albino), the Good Witch of the North, along with the people of Munchkinland (Del Carmen, Marsigliano and Furnari) who declare her a hero for killing the Wicked Witch of the East. Glinda tells Dorothy to take the ruby slippers because they hold magical powers and the evil Wicked Witch of the West (Bikowski) wants them for herself.

Dorothy just wants to go home and in order to do that she must see the great and powerful Wizard of Oz in Emerald City. All she has to do is follow the yellow brick road which leads her down a trailway of surprises and adventure. 

On the first stop she meets the loveable Scarecrow (Katy Snair) who wants to ask the Wizard for a brain. The duo head further down the road and run into the stiff, yet emotional, Tinman (Steven Uihlein) who is looking for a heart. After some trials and tribulations, thanks to the evil witch watching their every move from her lair, they meet the soft Lion (Sean Amato) who wants courage (and to stop being such a scaredy cat!).

Do the four new friends make it to the Emerald City and does the Wizard make all their wishes come true? That’s for you to find out. 

Directed by Sanzel with musical direction from Quattrock, Dorothy’s Adventures in Oz features wonderful original songs and fantastic choreography from Sari Feldman. While the set is small, the theater does a great job of letting your imagination run free, along with the help of a trap door on stage where someone may or may not melt into.

But what truly stands out, alongside the professionalism, talent and commitment to character from the amazing cast, are the costumes designed by Jason Allyn. From Dorothy’s signature blue and white gingham dress; the scarecrow, tinman and lion’s costumes; all the way to the gowns of the elite Emerald City citizens, the outfits are stunning. 

So, buy your tickets now or the Wicked Witch will get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too! And don’t forget to stop by the lobby on your way out for a group photo with the cast.

Dr. Christopher Gobler, a professor in the School of Marine and Atmosphere Sciences (SoMAS) at the State University of New York at Stony Brook’s Southampton campus, will be honored by the Sierra Club’s Long Island group for his outstanding environmental contributions at a buffet luncheon at Seatuck (in the Scully estate), 550 South  Bay Ave.,  Islip on March 15 at 1 pm.

Gobler has been a professor at SoMAS since 2005. He has been Director of Academic Programs, Associate Dean of Research, and is now co-Director of the Center for Clean Water Technology (CCWT). 

He has been recognized by the Sierra Club’s Long Island group as a recipient of their 2024 Outstanding Environmentalist award for educating not only the students at the University, but the public as well about the state of our waters, the need for them to be cleaned up, and how to go about it. He’s also being recognized for his work and research toward a better understand our surrounding waters. 

Stony Brook University’s website says “The major research focus within his group is investigating how anthropogenic activities such as climate change, eutrophication, and the over-harvesting of fisheries alters the natural biogeochemical and/or ecological functioning of coastal ecosystems.   Within this realm, major research efforts include the study of harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by multiple classes of phytoplankton in diverse ecosystems as well as the effects of coastal ocean acidification on marine life.”

Like other types of plastic such as milk cartons and apple cider containers, plastic film products are everywhere and have become a ubiquitous part of the lives of shoppers and consumers. What are some examples of these products?

Examples include the plastic bag your dry cleaning garments came in, cereal bags, shrink and bubble wrap, the bag your newspaper was delivered in, zip-top food storage bags (they need to be clean), the plastic bag your bread came in as well as the plastic film that covers bulk paper products like paper towels and toilet paper.    

The good news is that due to a provision in the New York State Environmental Conservation Law, many retailers, such as supermarkets and home improvement stores, are required to establish an in-store recycling program which typically involves the placement of a bin typically near the store’s entry for the placement of your plastic film products. 

One good thing about plastic wrap products is  they are easy to store — I cram all the plastic film material I’ve acquired into a plastic bag until it can hold no more and bring it with me to the store for disposal in the bin. Given this law, plastic film recycling is pretty painless so if you want to reduce your contribution to plastic pollution remember to bring your plastic film bag crammed with other plastic film materials to the store so it may be recycled!   

You should not put plastic film in your curbside recycling bin. The town doesn’t have the equipment to sort it from other recyclable materials.

Tempura, a Japanese specialty, consists of pieces of seafood, vegetables, or occasionally chicken, that are lightly battered, then deep-fried to a golden color. The batter, which must be light and thin, is made of flour (traditionally wheat), eggs, and ice water.

It is believed that Portuguese Jesuits introduced this deep-frying cooking technique to the Japanese in the sixteenth century in Nagasaki. Some believe the word tempura derived from the Latin word tempora, referring to the Christian “fast days” when people couldn’t eat meat.

The deep-fried pieces of seafood or vegetables are then dipped into a sauce using a base of soy sauce with mirin (sweet rice wine) and dashi. It’s also quite common to add grated ginger or grated Japanese daikon radish into the dipping sauce. Tempura should never be greasy or heavy and is often accompanied by a dish of steamed rice, udon, or soba noodles.

Some common foods used in tempura are seafood — shrimp (tail-on), crab, scallops, and squid; and Vegetables — Bell pepper, broccoli, carrots, daikon radish, eggplant, green beans, lotus root, mushrooms, onions, pumpkin, and sweet potato.

Here are four dry white wines that will pair with a dish of hot, deep-fried tempura.

2021 Gebeshuber “Zierfandler,” Ried Modler, Gumpoldskirchen, Thermenregion, Austria. A biodynamic, single-vineyard wine. (Aged 8 months in oak barrels). Full aroma of nuts, lemon-lime, pineapple, and spices. Flavors of coconut, apple, and peach with a smoky aftertaste.

2022 Heidi Schröck & Söhne “Furmint,” Rust, Burgenland, Austria. (Aged in stainless steel and acacia barrels.) Yellow with greenish tones. Bouquet and flavor of anise, yellow apple, honeysuckle, and peach. Hints of grapefruit, chamomile, spices, and tobacco. Very dry with a citrus aftertaste.

2022 Coppo “Monteriolo” Chardonnay DOC, Piedmont, Italy. The winery has been making Chardonnay since 1984. This wine was aged for 9 months in French oak barrels. Bright straw yellow with a fresh bouquet and flavor of apple, pear, lemon, butter, and vanilla with hints of pineapple, chamomile, and toast. Very complex wine with an aftertaste of tangerine. It reminds me of a well-made premier cru Chablis.

2022 Te Mata “Chardonnay,” Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. (100% Chardonnay). Aged for a short time in oak barrels.) Bright yellow with a medium-full bouquet and flavor of peach, citrus, buttered toast, and tropical fruit. Hints of melon, macadamia nuts, and vanilla, with a touch of salinity. Smooth finish and a long aftertaste of grilled pineapple.

Other wines that pair with tempura are Albariño, Catarratto, and sparkling wines (brut), along with Junmai sake (chilled), and cold beer.

The month of March has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in March 1925.

• A military committee in France concludes that Germany committed gross violations of the Treaty of Versailles on March 1. The committee, led by Marshal Ferdinand Foch, accuses Germany of violating provisions related to the disarmament of its military.

• Huff Daland Dusters Inc., is founded in Macon, Georgia, on March 2. The company, which began as a drop dusting firm formed to combat a boll weevil infestation of cotton crops, would be sold near the end of 1928, at which time it is renamed Delta Air Service.

• The United States Congress authorizes the Mount Rushmore Memorial Commission on March 3. The initial design for Mount Rushmore initially featured each president depicted from head to waist. But funding for the sculpture dried up in 1941, so only President George Washington’s sculpture features any details below chin level.

• The second inauguration of United States President Calvin Coolidge takes place on March 4. It is the first inauguration to be nationally broadcast on radio.

• Alan Rowe opens the chamber of the tomb of Hetepheres I on March 8 in Egypt. Rowe, who was serving as deputy director of the Harvard-Boston Expedition, is the first person in 4,500 years to open the chamber.

• The state of Bavaria in Germany bans Adolf Hitler from speaking in public for two years on March 9. The ban limits Hitler to speaking only in private, closed meetings.

• Greek football club Olympiacos F.C. is founded in Piraeus on March 10. Olympiacos is now the most successful club in Greek football history, with 47 league titles to its credit.

• Cuba and the United States sign the Hay-Quesada Treaty on March 13. The treaty recognizes that the Isla de Pinos, now known as the Isla de la Juventud, is the territory of Cuba.

• Walter Camp passes away in New York City on March 14 at the age of 65. Camp, a college football coach considered the “Father of American Football,” created the sport’s system of downs and the line of scrimmage.

• An estimated 5,000 people are killed when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes the Chinese province of Yunnan on March 16.

• Edvard Benes of Czechoslovakia proposes a “United States of Europe” on March 17. The proposal is an attempt to secure peace in Europe and includes a western bloc featuring nations including England and France, and an eastern bloc made up of countries including Poland and Austria.

• The Breakers, a luxury hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, burns down on March 18. The cause of the fire is later traced to the wife of Chicago mayor William Hale Thompson, who left an electric curling iron plugged in.

• On March 19, Martha Wise confesses to poisoning 17 members of her family. Wise was connected to the crimes by Medina County, Ohio, sheriff Fred Roshon, who had discovered a day earlier that she had recently purchased a sizable quantity of arsenic from a drug store.

• Clifton R. Wharton begins his diplomatic career on March 20. Wharton would become the first African American admitted to the United States Foreign Service and the first black U.S. envoy to Romania and the first black U.S. ambassador to Norway.

• The Butler Act takes effect in Tennessee on March 21. The act prohibits school teachers from denying the Biblical account of the origins of humanity and remains on the books until 1967.

• The Tokyo Broadcasting Station transmits the first radio broadcast in Japan on March 22. The first broadcast includes a recording of the Beethoven opera “Fidelio.”

• Scottish inventor John Logie Baird publicly demonstrates the transmission of moving silhouette pictures at a London department store on March 25. A contemporary report in Nature magazine characterizes Baird’s design as “television.”

• Fascists and Communists engage in a fistfight within the Italian Chamber of Deputies on March 26. The fisticuffs break out on the day Benito Mussolini returns to the Chamber for the first time in more than a month.

• The Philadelphia Daily News begins publication as a tabloid morning newspaper on March 31.

Suffolk County Community College, 1001 Crooked Hill Road, Brentwood presents the Long Island Pet Expo on March 1 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and March 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family.

The event returns to Suffolk County Community College Grant Campus in the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets.

“The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs several similar events in the northeast.

The 100+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. Pets on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand.

Popular performers and presenters include Gail Mirabella and the Dynamo Dogs, Diana Frohman and her Beautiful Dancing Dogs, Schutzhund Demonstration by Maximum K9 Service, Zenos Dog Run Lure Course, Rainforest Reptiles Shows, TICA Championship Cat Shows, Rabbit Hopping, Parties by Parrots and more!

“We always have fun at these events, but we also are strong supporters of responsible pet ownership and humane values when it comes to all issues involving animals and pets,” said Garetano. “We partner with several community organizations, shelters, veterinarians and other animal lovers educate and inform when it comes to best practices for training, feeding and all aspects of pet care.”

Community and rescue organizations will be participating in the show where attendees can learn about pet adoptions as well as responsible ownership and care.
